If it's Scots vs. English, which one of the horse dudes is William Wallace?... assuming I have the right period and war >.>;
You guessed correctly! Or at least, it is inspired by that time period. None of them is Wallace that I'm aware of, although we did jokingly name the leading horse "Gibson" in my streams.
March of Cambreadth was also a significant influence in commissioning this work.
Hence the inclusion of a midnight mare and blood red roan.

OMG I LOVE that song <3 SO cool to know that was an inspiration for some of the characters involved here!!!
The songwriter/performer actually has a history with the furry community. She has transitioned and is now a He going by Alexander James Adams, and he's been a GoH at a few furry conventions.
Awesome song. I listen to it, believe it or not, when I play World of Tanks, just because it's just that good of a battle song.
Brute horsepower is no match for the masses of doggo force. Aim for the legs!
This is what happens when the Clydesdales get into the beer wagon
again.
Run dog, run
again.
Run dog, run
Talk about absolutely amazing! The details, the scale of the piece and the metallic gleam of the helmets is absolutely perfect! This is an epic piece dude! Print it, frame it and hang it on a wall man, that's a piece to be proud of!
Thanks so much! I'm certainly quite proud of having finished it, it was quite the work.
And I'm glad you felt compelled to take on a task of this complexity and enormity. And you're still sane afterwards!
By "storage" you mean the last dead english dog you left it in? ;-p
Nah. Thats me knife, the blade lives in the castle over yonder. :P
If only life were that good.
If only life were that good.
this turned out so frickin amazing. watching you work on it was really neat
This is one of the masterpieces of the furry community.
The light, the composition, the figures, the atmosphere... what a quality work.

My pleasure! It is really refreshing to see such amazing work on FA.
Not having a copy will most likely cause the manager of The Louvre many a restless night with heartburn.
this is absolutely stellar! I love all the expressions! so many cool little details!!! <3
Thank you! It was quite challenging to not get really repetitive with the characters and details so I'm glad you're enjoying them!
Happy to see this one completed. :) Great work. An absurd number of characters, and a lot of interesting little mini-stories being told throughout the image (even if most of them consist of "Augh, I've been stabbed!" or "Augh, that guy just got stabbed!" I think my favorite detail of the image is the fact that in the reflections on on the helmets, you can actually make out the vague forms of the other soldiers in the area. Really cool!
Thanks so much Robbo! And yeah haha, not a lot of room for more complex relationships and interactions in a frontline!
This.....is......awesome. Well done.
I feel the sudden need to go watch Braveheart.
I feel the sudden need to go watch Braveheart.
Well, of course it's not historically accurate. Everyone knows that the English are bulldogs!
Fantastic pic!
Fantastic pic!
No no no the third arrow on the right is a Sharps-Thilsbury Mark V and it should be a Plinn-Thirdsby Mark VI A at least by this time period worst videogame ever unsubscribed
ayy dont worry about historical accuracy here. There were so many rebellions with the scots against the saxon english, at so many times, that historical inaccuracies are very forgiving! that being said, great job yo! love it :) how long did this piece take ya
ARE YA CALLIN ME A HORSE-PERSON! Scots = horses...
Well, I guess I must accept this now. uvu

I shall drink Irn Bru, wear a kilt and play the bagpipes as I hoof march to war.
Also, I forgot in my moment of horsing around, to remark on such fantastic work, Caraid. In scale and in detail, it is truly amazing. <3

Aaaa this is absolutely beautiful! ♥ I love the atmosphere in this so much.
I'm literally not even going to try to leave a comment worthy of this.
how long colectivly do you think this took to make? It took me a really long time to look over all the individual detail. Everything is different in this, all the characters all have their own individuality, its real impressive.
Thank you! It took a little over 60 hours in pure drawing and painting time :). I'm happy you're appreciating the details and expressions, it was quite challenging to keep them interesting and not too repetitive!
I can imagine! 60 hours really means you did paint all these individual details by hand, it shows! count me impressed!
Let me be the first to ruin a really good piece by pointing out something. That lead horse has absolutely TERRIBLE edge alignment with his sword.
Haha no, you are absolutely right. I noticed this after I had painted the sword and realized that it wasn't aligning in his hand properly, and certainly not to have cut the frontline soldier. I was happy with the focus on the sword though and left it this way, hoping it wouldn't be too noticeable. Oops!
This is extremely intense, rendering every single thing like this is wild!
damn this picture is incredible @____@ so much detail!
The sheer amount of helmets and details is astounding! Great work! :D
Your work is always stunning, Caraid, but the magnitude of this piece...just, wow. I'm glad I got to watch some of it being worked on in-stream. I'm curious--what dog breeds did you use for this? I'm thinking Airedale terrier and foxhound/pointer/one of the related breeds, but that's just a guess (not like I'm some sort of expert on dog breeds, lol). In any case, very well done!
You guessed exactly right! Airedale terriers and foxhounds, both old English breeds :). I liked the aesthetic of Airedales in particular, there's something quite medieval about their appearance already!
The scale, the style, effort -- magnificent. How long did it take to compose this piece?
Thanks so much! It took a little over 60 hours in pure drawing and painting time :).
I'd say this is easily gallery-quality art and I don't say that of much furry art. This one deserves to be in a professional portfolio.
This is without a doubt the best looking piece you've submitted by far. This is true fine art here. I'll definitely be picking up one of those prints in the future. I must have this on my wall lol
Hehe, I'm sure there's just the tiniest bit of bias because of the horses ;). Thanks so much Thunder and if you do get a print, be sure to show me the result if it's not too much trouble! I'd love to see pictures :D.
Dear friend I would never be won over by something so trivial as species favoritism. *totally is* :P
Of coarse I'll send you photos when I hang it. Never too much trouble. ^^

Indeed they do. Best defense against a calvary charge is have them impale themselves with their own momentum.
Wooooah. If you don't mind me asking, what would something like this cost? o.l
A piece like this starts at several thousands of dollars, going up depending on the size and complexity. If you'd like to know an exact quote you can always note me. I won't be taking on new commissions of this size for quite some time though probably!
It's an amazing piece. I may have to get a print.
And yeah, that several thousand is well earned! I'd already said it would be over $1000 to the friend that showed me it.
Absolutely stunning. I'd say it's the best piece of artwork I've seen.

I have a sona that's a doberman and one that's a draft horse... so this speaks to me in a completely different way.
Incredible amount of work here..... I got to watch you do a fair bit of it, and it was AWESOME.
This is truly stunning!! The composition, the level of detail, the sense of action, the depth of the characters ... this is simply an amazing piece of work. This is the level and scope of work that hangs on the walls of major metropolitan art museums. I am in awe of your prowess and skill! Congrats!
Thank you very much for the kind words! I am flattered enough to know that it will be on a wall in some people's homes ^^!
If you do make prints available please let me know ... I would definitely love one.
Prints are indeed available! :) Right here: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/cara.....-at-the-front/
It's so impressive Caraid, I love the scene. The composition is clear and love all details in this. Great Job here ! *_*
If this doesn't deserve a fav, I don't know what does. This is an incredible piece.
Could I assume from this that you're pretty well versed in historical themes? I'm all about that!

Thanks very much!
I certainly have an interest in history, I've done a fair amount of research for this piece and I do enjoy reading historically accurate fiction and recollections of certain times, but I can't honestly say I'm very well versed. I don't know as much as I'd like to!

Ok, turns out this this may be one of my fav piece on FA now. Battle scene in art are such a beauty!!!
Both concept and execution are spectacular. Love all the details, the muted, oppressive colours and the perspective. Wow.
Those must all be Houndstooth hats! If the dogs don't break their line, they should win. Looks like meat is back on the menu, boys!
Certainly qualifies as a tour de force, an opus, a masterpiece!
Amazing pice!!!!!
I used to be in the SCA and had partaken in a war practice... 80 fighters on the field at once, 50vs30 we were the underdogs.
I personally witnessed another human being wearing FULL PLATE ARMOR jump 8 foot gap between lines and land ON TOP of the defenders on the other side !!!!!
All hell broke loose after that.
Superb piece of art here Cara!

The scottish barbarian hoardes fought on foot. They should be the doggo's.
I DEMAND MY PEOPLE BE GRACEFUL, MAGNIFICENT HOERS'S!

As somebody of Scottish Ancestory, I highly approve of this rendering. Most excellent!! The details are just amazing!!
Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

I am also reminded of this great quote, certainly fits the image.
In the Year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland - starving and outnumbered - charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets; they fought like Scotsmen, and won their freedom.

So cool! You did really awesome. I love that it's horses vs dogs. <3
INCREDIBLE dramatic scene! Wow.
"They can take our oats, BUT THEY CAN NEVER TAKE OUR FREEDOM!"

FINALLY DONEEEEEEE :DDD FFREEDOME!! congrats in finishing this Cara <3
Oh my goodness, this is absolutely incredible! Holy damn I'm speechless.. o-o Truly a masterpiece!
Fareweel to a' our Scottish fame,
Fareweel our ancient glory;
Fareweel ev'n to the Scottish name,
Sae fam'd in martial story.
Now Sark rins over Solway sands,
An' Tweed rins to the ocean,
To mark where England's province stands-
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
What force or guile could not subdue,
Thro' many warlike ages,
Is wrought now by a coward few,
For hireling traitor's wages.
The English steel we could disdain,
Secure in valour's station;
But English gold has been our bane -
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
O would, ere I had seen the day
That Treason thus could sell us,
My auld grey head had lien in clay,
Wi' Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour,
I'll mak this declaration;
We're bought and sold for English gold-
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
I was gonna bounce in and throw a tennis ball joke but i guess i'd rather drop it and let it roll away.
Sorry/Not sorry.
Sorry/Not sorry.
Had those Scottish horses brought tennis balls those English lines would have been in total disarray.
Since nobody else said it...
STAMPEDE!
Wonderful work on both sides of the battle!

Positively stunning! This is probably one of the most awe-inspiring things I've seen come from this fandom, ever. You really are a force to be reckoned with!
If you don't mind me asking, what were the original dimensions of this piece? There's so much clear detail and the piece is so large that I'm assuming something absolutely massive? :o

The original resolution is 10800x6000px on 300 dpi :). Quite large, yes! Suitable for a 24" x 36" print.

Dang! This is like a painting from an old master in an alternate (furry) universe, very nicely done! Every time I look at it I find another interesting detail!
You been working on this for so long! Looks fantastic finished!!
Brilliant work! Absolutely fantastic job! This is one of my favorite art pieces of all time. I am a huge fan of "war art" like this, similarly to Warhammer fantasy battles/40k art, it has power, emotion, and pure awesomeness :3
Love it!
Love it!
It was a real treat watching you work on this. Belongs in a museum, it does.
Just about made me catatonic from all the helmets, too <3
