SMS Hood
Red lights blinked rapidly as alarms blared nauseatingly loud in their ears as three figures in EVA suits charged down a dim hallway only illuminated by the spinning alarm lights that signaled imminent danger. Loud THOOMS could be heard around the walls as impacts hit the ship from outside. “The hull wont hold up to this for long Gustav! Your plan had better work or I'll drag you down to the deepest pit in hell personally!” yelled a woman with short brown hair and green eyes in deep shadows cast by the lights. The man she was screaming at over the din was a slavic man with blonde dirty blonde hair who was right in front of her. “I know Alexa! Let me think! If we realign the maneuvering jets we can-” a gut wrenching scream of tearing and twisting metal drowned his words in a sea of noise louder than any human could bellow. As the ship shook violently, the third member of their party finally spoke up. “That didn't sound good Gustav, that came from the bulkhead behind us!” James called over the fresh hull breach alarms that joined the emergency klaxons in a screaming competition within the small confined space.
“The door sealed! We can't go back to the controls!” Alexa screamed as their plan failed before they could even start. “The pods are further ahead! We can at least survive this if the ship doesn't!” James replied, his voice getting hoarse from the strain of competing with speakers embedded in the walls.
“Great! Lead the way!” Gustav waved to his compatriot as they resumed their desperate scramble towards the back of the ship. The tight hallways seemed to close in around them as the noises of asteroids pelting the ship like birdshot became louder and louder as the chunks of ice and rock became larger and larger. More deadly and vicious by the second. “Just to the left!” Alexa declared, joy in her voice as she squeezed ahead of the other two men in a rush of adrenaline fueled panic. As she reached the bulkhead door that would lead to their salvation, the left side of the hall exploded, sucking Gustav and James out of the ship and into the merciless black of the void only to be torn apart by the storm of stone around the ship. Alexa, herself barely able to survive as she had been moving through the door at the time, gaped in horror as her friends died in the black before the sucktion of the void slammed the thick alloy door shut in her face, saving her from the same cruel fate.
The scream of tortured metal permeated the little air remaining in the chunk of ship she found herself in as the ship was rent in two not unlike the ancient HMS Hood for which this very ship was named. Without any hope of saving her shipmates, Alexa turned and sprinted towards the six escape pods. Or at least their empty housings.
Coming to a stop just in front of the escape pod bay, she choked on her breath as the doors for the escape pods were all closed and empty, the pods long since jettisoned by the other panicked crewmen. Now all alone, Alexa fell to her knees, the sounds of alarms and blinking lights taking on a muffled and grey theme respectively as she began to accept her defeat. “A proud history of naval service only to end in a tombstone saying ‘beat by rocks’” she chuckled humorlessly as the last bits of ship were perforated and ripped apart by the chunks of stone and ice that had demolished the SMS Hood finally found their way to her, leading her to the afterlife with a violent sound of suction and tearing metal.
