SFX Spurious Awards

Captain Mal cakes, werewolf nipple rash, bizarre Batman symbols, Disney Potter and loads more stuff and nonsense

FACE OF THE WEEK

Well, you’d pull a face like Scott’s in Teen Wolf if somebody Tasered you right in the nipples. He narrowly beats out Gwen in Torchwood with this effort…

What a shame we were denied the full glory!

UN PC SF-RELATED CHILDREN’S BOOK OF THE WEEK

[VAMS id="1sprQPAu1NQfj"]

Quite why anybody would decide to use classic Trek to teach children about opposites escapes us (surely pre-school kids these days are into Shaun The Sheep or Gangsta Rap or something?), but we’re glad they did, because we thought this little tome was inexplicably cute. That was until we got to a page that didn’t quite seem to live up to the Star Trek ethos of not judging someone by their looks… The Star Trek Book Of Opposites is published by Quirk Books .

BEST-USED 16-BITS OF THE WEEK

The entire first season of Game Of Thrones , repurposed as a Nintendo-style game from the 16-bit era.

ADVERT/EDITORIAL CONFLUENCE OF THE WEEK

Please excuse us for Spurious Awarding ourselves, but this accidental piece of complementary doctor-based advertising did make us chortle.

TV QUIZ ROUND OF THE WEEK

Can you do better than Homerton College, Cambridge? (We did.) This is the second Spurious Award for University Challenge following the show’s “name the alien language” round a few months back. And we’re beginning to think Jeremy Paxman may be a closet geek, mainly by the way he doesn’t get sneery during sci-fi rounds like he does during other popular culture rounds. Usually he’s all, “I’d wear it as a badge of honour you got all the answers wrong in a Eurovision round” but this week he was positively aghast that Cambridge couldn’t identify the Master’s theme.

CALCULATION OF THE WEEK

Feel free to enlarge the picture to check the maths if you understand that kind of thing. Here at the Spurious Committee, we just want to believe. We wish we had had maths teachers like i_luv_ur_mum ’s.

SHADOW OF THE WEEK

And while we’re on the subject of Bat-symbols, here’s one that’s really useful if Commissioner Gordon is standing in the room right next to you .

FREAKY HOSTING CHOICE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to the US Science Channel for completely messing with our brains by getting Walter Bishop (or John Noble, anyway) to host a show concentrating on what can only be described as “fringe” science. But is it real? Or a joke? Or the most complex piece of below-the-line marketing ever? We wouldn’t have put it past that sneaky lot on Fringe to have created this show as some kind of alternate reality in which Walter Bishop is a media celeb, who’ll then turn up on Fringe next season. You laugh with derision now, but just you wait…

HARRY POTTER REIMAGINING OF THE WEEK
Last week it was anime Harry Potter, this week it’s Disney Harry Potter. It’s all meme, meme, meme on the internet, isn’t it? Personally, we want to see the Wallace And Gromit Harry Potter…

CAKES OF THE WEEK
And while we’re on the subject of memes, the Spurious Committee is eminently bribable with some sci-fi cakes, and more and more are making their way onto the internet every week. First up, some Firefly cup cakes created for Vivian’s Blog-o-rama , which SFX reader Maryann Johanson alerted us to by way of celebrating Captain Mal Reynold’s victory in The SFX Top 100 Icons Of The 21st Century Poll .

Finally, how about tucking into the sponge version of a personality core from Portal 2 , created by Mike’s Amazing Cakes.com . Not convinced it’s actually a cake? Then click here to see it being cut.
