Python Program to Create a Lap Timer Last Updated : 12 Jul, 2025 Comments Improve Suggest changes Like Article Like Report In this article, we will make a simple timer to calculate lap-time intervals using Python. time: This module provides various time-related functions. It is a part of Python's standard library and does not require installation. Approach: The user needs to press ENTER to complete each lap. The timer keeps counting till CTRL+C is pressed. For each lap we calculate the lap time by subtracting the current time from the total time at the end of the previous lap. The time() function of the time module, returns the current epoch time in milliseconds. Below is the implementation: Python3 # importing libraries import time # Timer starts starttime = time.time() lasttime = starttime lapnum = 1 print("Press ENTER to count laps.\nPress CTRL+C to stop") try: while True: # Input for the ENTER key press input() # The current lap-time laptime = round((time.time() - lasttime), 2) # Total time elapsed # since the timer started totaltime = round((time.time() - starttime), 2) # Printing the lap number, # lap-time and total time print("Lap No. "+str(lapnum)) print("Total Time: "+str(totaltime)) print("Lap Time: "+str(laptime)) print("*"*20) # Updating the previous total time # and lap number lasttime = time.time() lapnum += 1 # Stopping when CTRL+C is pressed except KeyboardInterrupt: print("Done") Output: ENTER to count laps.Press CTRL+C to stopLap No. 1Total Time: 1.09Lap Time: 1.09********************Lap No. 2Total Time: 2.66Lap Time: 1.41********************Lap No. 3Total Time: 5.06Lap Time: 2.23********************Lap No. 4Total Time: 5.63Lap Time: 0.4********************DoneTime complexity: O(1) - the program runs in constant time, regardless of the size of the input. Auxiliary space: O(1) - the program uses a fixed amount of memory, regardless of the size of the input Comment More infoAdvertise with us C cosine1509 Follow Improve Article Tags : Python Python Programs Write From Home Python time-module Practice Tags : python Explore Python FundamentalsPython Introduction 3 min read Input and Output in Python 4 min read Python Variables 6 min read Python Operators 5 min read Python Keywords 2 min read Python Data Types 9 min read Conditional Statements in Python 6 min read Loops in Python - For, While and Nested Loops 9 min read Python Functions 9 min read Recursion in Python 6 min read Python Lambda Functions 6 min read Python Data StructuresPython String 6 min read Python Lists 6 min read Python Tuples 6 min read Dictionaries in Python 7 min read Python Sets 10 min read Python Arrays 9 min read List Comprehension in Python 4 min read Advanced PythonPython OOP Concepts 11 min read Python Exception Handling 6 min read File Handling in Python 4 min read Python Database Tutorial 4 min read Python MongoDB Tutorial 2 min read Python MySQL 9 min read Python Packages 12 min read Python Modules 7 min read Python DSA Libraries 15 min read List of Python GUI Library and Packages 11 min read Data Science with PythonNumPy Tutorial - Python Library 3 min read Pandas Tutorial 6 min read Matplotlib Tutorial 5 min read Python Seaborn Tutorial 15+ min read StatsModel Library- Tutorial 4 min read Learning Model Building in Scikit-learn 8 min read TensorFlow Tutorial 2 min read PyTorch Tutorial 7 min read Web Development with PythonFlask Tutorial 8 min read Django Tutorial | Learn Django Framework 10 min read Django ORM - Inserting, Updating & Deleting Data 4 min read Templating With Jinja2 in Flask 6 min read Django Templates 7 min read Python | Build a REST API using Flask 3 min read How to Create a basic API using Django Rest Framework ? 4 min read Python PracticePython Quiz 3 min read Python Coding Practice 1 min read Python Interview Questions and Answers 15+ min read Like
