Ring Road St Peters in Wolverhampton
Looking north-east towards Stafford Street Junction (clockwise) from the landscaped central reservation. On the left is the Wolverhampton School of Art.
The late John Maddan summarises thus: "The School of Art & Design occupies this landmark building just outside the Ring Road. It was built in 1969 at the time that the Art College and South Staffordshire Technical College were merged to create Wolverhampton Polytechnic. (It opened in 1970). Through the 1970s and 1980s the Poly expanded incorporating the local teacher training colleges. In 1992 it was awarded university status and now operates on the city centre campus and other sites at Compton, Walsall and Telford."
In 2025 Wolverhampton University has decided to "radically overhaul its estate", including demolishing this perfectly sound building. Widespread calls are being made to avoid this exceptionally destructive and wasteful process, including a serious plan to give the building Historic England "listed" status as a fine example of 1960s Brutalist architecture.
