I really enjoyed these, they're spooky, and eerie and some of my favourite types of horror stories. The stories are short and quick reads but they still pack in the suspense and thrill. I really love the notes at the end of some of the stories, and all of the Chills & Creeps stories, have notes on where the idea came from or about the writing.

They Come At Night - A group of teens on a weekend beach trip that doesn't go as planned. This one feels more atmospheric compared to other stories I think. I like the characters and the suspense created by not knowing what's coming.

Blind Date - This is the second story I read by Nick Clausen, the first being Dead Meat Day 1, and it still sticks in my head. There was a twist I didn't expect and I really liked how technology was used in the story. After re-reading, I still love this story.

Chills & Creeps 1 - A collection of 9 short stories, the description says 8 but i'm pretty sure there were 9. Maybe I can't count haha. I really enjoyed each of these, I don't have a review for each one because I got lazy. Chills & Creeps is the perfect name for these stories.

The Girl Who Wasn’t There - A young girl disappears while in the care of her older brother. I really liked how this was told, initially in the brother's POV then the sisters for part 2 before the thrilling final part. The addition of the sister's POV was great, it was unique.

Chills & Creeps 2 - Another collection of short stories that bring all the creepiness I look for in a collection like this.

Dreamland - Louie escapes to Dreamland where things are possibly too good to be true. The setting and imagery was nice. This wasn't scary scary but there was an overall feeling of unease. We jumped into the story right away and it kept me hooked all the way through.

Human Flesh - I think this is my second favourite after Blind Date. I absolutely love wendigos and am always up for reading more stories that feature them. This did not disappoint. I love the folklore and how scary/creepy it all is.

Overall, this is a really good collection of stories. I really enjoy Nick Clausen's writing and his characters. If you like scary stories, then I highly recommend Monsters at Midnight.

October is a fine month to read horror. My first time reading Nick Clausen. Wow, pleasantly surprised at how well he writes and entertains. This book is made up of short stories. Creepy settings, horror galore and after each story the author gives you a little insight about each story. Nothing is going to keep you up at night with the terrors. These, however, are well worth reading and adding to any horror lovers collection.

The Girl Who Wasn't There seems to be a fan favorite. It's about a young girl who disappears without a trace. The police have no idea what happened. The brother is convinced that a supernatural being has her. What I like about this story is the fact it's told by the brother's perspective and his sister's perspective. Usually I don't care for this type of thing but this actually makes the story pretty darn interesting.

Dreamland made me think, heck this isn't horror. It's about a young man who never knew his father because he died when he was young. The boy meets his father in dreamland and they get to know each other. You have to read the story to see if you think it's horror or not, I am not giving away any spoilers.

An assortment of short tales and novellas. Instead of rolling my eyes and dreading another snoozefest, I was excited to read each story, unlike previous short story books I've been reading on the hunt for a 5-star horror read.
Standouts for me were The Girl Who Wasn't There, Whiskers, They Come at Night, Blind Date, Ghost Tennis, Dreamland, House of Echoes, and Creepy Crawlies. In fact, I enjoyed 29 out of the 29 stories rating a mere 5 of them with the lowest rating of "okay."

I stayed up late reading this book. The stories were really engrossing. I found his style of writing reminiscent of the authors I grew up reading, like Stephen King. Nick Clausen writing style was very engaging, he tells a wonderful story and I am eager to read more from him.

My own personal reading challenge to read until I find a 5-Star horror book is now complete. To reward myself, I shall do something a little different and read more horror books.

An excellent collection of very suspenseful and creepy short stories.

I found this collection via Nick Clausen’s newsletter. I was not sure what to expect from the way he described it, but whatever I expected, this was not it.

It took me a little time to read it, but having just stayed up late to finish the final story, all I can now say is wow!

This collection leaves you spoilt for choice. So many stories, so many creepy concepts, so many different styles. Length, pace, format of each piece varies, keeping you on your toes as to what the next piece will be like.

Very often a horror story will follow quite a predictable format, but not in this collection. There is a huge variety, and the scariest parts are not what is written, but where there are gaps left for your mind to suggest what could have been. These are not just stories, they are a dive into human nature.

Would highly recommend reading this collection.

A very entertaining horror collection!

What’s better than a very entertaining horror story? How about a collection of 29 – most of which are novella length. Monsters at Midnight by Nick Clausen is an awesome collection that will keep you engaged from the first to last story. I had the opportunity to listen to a review copy of the audiobook narrated by Spencer Dillehay and I can say I enjoyed every minute of the 37 hours and 10 minutes it took to go from the beginning to the end. Along with Spencer’s excellent narration and variety of character voices, I loved the author’s notes at the end of each of the selections. Those author notes brought each story into clear focus as to Mr. Clausen’s mindset when he wrote each story and how some tied into his personal life. If you have enjoyed any or all of Nick’s postapocalyptic stories/series, you should check out Monsters at Midnight to get a clearer picture of his storytelling abilities.

Audiobook: This was a collection of 29 Horror Stories, and it was amazing. The stories were of different lengths. The tales were varied and diverse: some of the stories featured typical horror characters such as ghosts, vampires, werewolves, etc, and other stories featured eccentric characters whose actions inspired feelings of horror and creepiness. All the stories were good, but there were some that I liked more than others. I enjoyed the author's notes in which the author explained what inspired the story. These brief summaries added to my appreciation of the author's work. Spencer Dillehay's narration was engaging, and his performance added to the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

It was a good book. Some short stories and some long stories. I have to say I loved the first story of the book called "They come at Night"( the locals keep a secret) . Made me want to read a full story based on that story line. Very good and creepy.
Also there was another story that started off ok but the second part of the story got very intense which kept me from wanting to put the book down called "The girl who wasn't there" (Monsters are real and they steal kids), I almost passed on reading this part as the begining kind of dragged along but i'm glad i didn't because the second part was very intense to the very end. I wish he would of went back and forth between Andy and Rebecca sides of the story that would of kept it interesting and also make it easier to keep up with what was happening on each of the days.
But all in all I have to say for this being stories the author wrote when he was young. I am very interested in reading some of his more current books. I have already baught two complete series of his to read called "Dead meat" and "Blind rage". Most definately looking forward to reading them.

Best binge reading weekend ever!!!!

If you love edge of your seat, nail biting, anxiety reading you have to read Nick Clausen. Ran across Monsters at Midnight while looking for some short “other world”stories. From start to finish I was captivated and transported into a world of the unknown. All 29 stories were amazing. I was scared, anxious and truly moved at times. I am an avid horror fan n you can’t get any better than this book. So many stories and not one of them the same or boring. Give it a try, keep a light on, but be warned you may get very little sleep!!!

Now Nick Clausen, why did you make every single one of these stories so good?
I start every anthology review off with “Well, like most anthologies some of these stories were hit or miss.” I liked every single one. So many different elements and horror genres. Some long, some short. Some poignant. All very well written. Every season is spooky season for me. But if you’re a Halloween scary reader, pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed.

Awesome

I really enjoyed these stories! Mr. Clause is really a good writer. His characters are full and bright. He knows a thing or two about horror. The Girl Who Wasn't There is probably my favorite. It kept me up all night. "Just one more page" just never happened. Read and enjoy!!

I ain’t sleeping tonight!

I must say, after being a fan of Steven King for most of my life (even before when he was Richard Bachman) I should know about horror. Nick does horror like no one else. His style is way different than King’s which puts him in his own category. Really freaky stuff for the most part. Sleep with someone you trust.

I’m very stingy with my five stars, but this was the best collection of short stories I’ve ever read. Well written, original, and suspenseful, these stories will definitely keep you up past your bed time. Dreamland was my favorite, it blew me away and even made me tear up by the end of it. I need more.

I enjoyed the stories for the most part. Some are truly short stories, others range from 100-300+ pages long. I did not enjoy the author's commentary after each story. It took away whatever feelings I was having after having read the story. He seemed to feel the need to explain where he got each idea from and why he wrote each story.

This was an awesome collection of short stories! I enjoyed it so much that I was very sad when it ended! Each story is well written and the characters are very memorable. Each story gives you something to think about and makes you want to go on to the next one! I definitely hope that he makes more collections like this!

Really good!

A fine collection of horror tales, some of them are classic themes but revisited. All of the main protagonists are 12-13 years old teenagers but really “suitable” for mature adults. Read the book non-stop for 3 days!

Some of these stories were amazing (The Girl who wasn't There, Dreamland, Beast) and others were a little flat. They're all super spooky without being gory. The author did a great job with the characters and setting up the atmosphere.

I wanted to love it, I really did, but every story had a really "meh" ending. It felt like the author got bored of his own stories and rushed to finish them.
90% of the stories had massive potential, were a decent read, but completely ruined by the endings and left me disappointed every time.

I discovered Nick Clausen when I read their book series Cadaver. This is a good book of short horror stories and a must for any analogy readers. I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator Spencer Dillehay did a fantastic job bringing all the characters to life in each story.

excellent

I loved all of these stories! Some of them were creepy, some were sad and a lot were thrilling! I think a good handful of them could also be just as great as novels. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Good selection of writing in this bundle. A well mixed bit of horror and suspense. Importantly, very few editing errors. Worth the price of admission.
