While they recover from their injuries, Kakashi puts Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura on a strict training regimen to protect Tazuna's family against Zabuza's next attack. But Zabuza has a dangerous new apprentice in Haku. And as the bridge comes closer to completion, our heroes must be willing to kill—or die.
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Naruto is my first foray into Manga, and I undoubtedly enjoyed it. Fun characters, frenetic action, an engaging mythology…it’s good stuff.
Yet, all I can think is: I should have read this 15 years ago.
Why didn’t it resonate with me more?
I think it has to do with timing. There are certain stories and writers that I’ve come upon at just the right time in my life—The Dark Phoenix Saga when I was 10, R.A. Salvatore and Drizzt Do’Urden when I was 15, Jane Austen when I was in college, David Foster Wallace when I was in my late 20s—to connect with on a level that went far beyond my feelings for any particular tale. It wasn’t so much my age, I think, as it was the stage or place I was in life that made it the right time for those particular stories to work themselves inside of me and become a part of me.
Undoubtedly, I’ve read other books at the wrong time and missed out on what might have been a magical experience at another time. That’s how I feel about Naruto.
I think I would have felt this on a much deeper level had I read it when I, too, was on a quest—a quest to figure out who I was and what I want and how to get there. That’s not to say that I’m not still on that quest, of course—every day that quest begins anew, and every day I try to take one step closer to achieving goals I’m still far from attaining. But, I generally know which way the compass is pointing, and I’ve passed milestones that seemed far away when I was, say, in my early 20s.
Had I encountered Naruto then, I think I’d have become an addict. As it stands, I appreciate it as an entertaining yarn and something I may go back to someday, but not something I feel a consuming need to continue with. But, hey—that doesn’t mean it won’t hit home again at some other time in life, eh?
(Did I just write a serious and pensive review about the exploits of a boy ninja who enjoys making clones of himself that look like scantily clad centerfold models? Yup. Weren’t expecting that, were you?
Naruto is a ninja-in-training with a need for attention, a knack for mischief, and sealed within him, a strange, formidable power. His antics amuse his instructor Kakashi and irritate his teammates, intense Sasuki and witty Sakura, but Naruto is serious about becoming the greatest ninja in the village of Konohagakure! Zabuza, the ninja assassin, was stopped from his first try at killing Tazuna the bridgebuilder – but Zabuza still lives! While the ninjas recover from their injuries, Kakashi puts Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura on a strict training regimen to protect Tazuna’s family – including Tazuna’s embittered grandson Inari – and prepare for Zabuza’s next attack. But the next time won’t be as easy, because joining Zabuza is his apprentice, Haku. And as the bridge comes closer to completion, our heroes must be willing to die – or kill – to protect the ones they love.

Reading it this time, I'm focused more on the "why do you protect" aspect more than anything else. It's not just Haku and Naruto at this point, but Sauske that I am really interested in.
I mean, let's face it... Sauske is a rather complicated character. Seeing him so young and pure, here, actually giving a damn about his first true friend, Naruto, is all kinds of wonderful. ESPECIALLY because of all that happens later.
Just a little reflection here makes these scenes a million times better.
I mean, sure, Naruto foxing out like that is great, but the underlying feels is something else altogether.
Original Review:
Finishing this volume gave me the chills. True, deep, creepy chills and it even brought some tears to my eyes. Of course, I know Sasuke isn't *really* dead, and I know that Haku is not truly what he seems, but the combination of events and the set-up is pretty damn brilliant.
That being said, I know that the whole side story if Inari is important, but on additional readings, I'm pretty much blah about it. I just wanted to get to the good stuff again.
now I want to rewatch this part (Updated: I'm doing it!)
just as a record for myself; read in Naruto's birthday! what else can I do except some binge reading & watching & diving into the fandom? - pre-read when it's your birthday & your cousin surprises you with a pack of your favourite Manga! & a beautiful Naruto Hoodie! YESSSSSSSSSS! BEST GIFTS EVERRRRR! I'M SO FRIGGIN' HAPPYYYYYYYY! (& I'm just fangirling crying & laughing in front of the family & they don't know what is going on. but tears of joy is the best!)
I was told the first three volumes belong together so I read them together, as recommended. Can't say that was a fun ride.
New volume, new training regimen. So more training, more eating, more creepy / foreboding kids (though this time we get a few cute animals thrown in to counter-balance, I guess), more techniques being shown and then explained and we get more trial and error and what I presume is supposed to be funny mishaps but ... *sighs* ... it's just not working for me. All the information we get from a change in perspective / scenery (like when we're with the baddies) also didn't do anything to spike my interest for events to come, sadly.
I think I'm gonna have to call it quits. When you don't care for the characters or the "mystery" or the magic system, there's just no use in continuing. Sorry. I really wanted to like this.
There's so much to appreciate in Naruto. Even if he continuously reminds us his end game, he will always value friendship no matter what. Having been through so much as a kid, his coping mechanisms are easy to see-through and quickly has you siding by him for better or for worse.
One of the best part of this volume is the ending, and it is an ending that just simply never seized to send chills down my spine. That moment where it just clicks and everything goes into an accelerated mode is just so exhilarating!
No way you could stop reading after this volume. Onto the next one!
I liked how Naruto's personality is showcased here, even if it's nothing new it still manages to add some depth and dimension. I guess in those early volumes one can clearly see the extent of inspiration Kishimoto took from Toriyama - Naruto is really a blond-haired ninja version of Goku. But that's exactly what I adore in him the most: the goofiness, perseverance, unshakable loyalty to his friends and mentors, and his iron will. His relationship with Sasuke evolves so much in this volume, in just a handful of scenes. Kishimoto has clearly evolved, both in style and storytelling skill.
Also, Haku is an intriguing character. I hope to know more about him soon!
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura have became junior ninjas and they want to do a job that is not just babysitting something more exiting. The three get a job to protect a old bridge builder from being as sainted by Zabuza. This book has a lot of battles and fights and blood. The ninjas meet lots of foes on their journey to the bridge builders destination. I enjoyed the fighting scenes and the suspense of the battles. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys lots of fighting in graphic novels. Overall I rate this book 9/10.
Woah, the Kekke Genkai of Uchiha Sasuke has been awakened! Some gruesome training, heartfelt backstory of Kaiza, fast paced action and amazing teamwork made it a memorable five star read for me!

Story Line: 5 stars out of 5. This volume is a bit sad, but also a bit fun. The ending of this volume really tempted me into reading volume 4 right away, but alas I did not. I wanted to read volume 3 of Bleach again. I love breaking my own heart. (That volume of Bleach is ridiculously sad.) Well, anyway, onto my actual review.
Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke are now being taught how to use chakra to climb trees. It will help them be able to master jutsu. Sakura gets the hang out of it right away. It takes Naruto and Sasuke a while to climb higher.
I really enjoyed learning more about the town Tazuna lives in. The reason he wants to finish building the bridge. It is respectable. He wants the people to be able to prosper again. Since Gato has taken over the town all of them are poor. They aren't able to afford food. With the bridge being built it will help them.
You also get to meet Tazuna's grandson, Inari, who does not respect ninja. In fact, he tells them that they should all go home and that there are no heroes. Tazuna tells the story of his father (not his real father...a father figure) to all of them. It is honestly a sad story. Naruto sees him crying. Inari eventually says something that gets on Naruto's nerves. Naruto calls him out. Kakashi goes to Inari after that to explain that Naruto never had parents in the first place. Naruto understands Inari more than anyone else.
Naruto is napping in the forest. He runs into Haku. They have a nice conversation.
Haku and Zabuza now return to fight. Naruto is left home since he was wiped out from all the training he was doing. Inari and his mom are left home. They are attacked by Gato's men. Naruto rescues them and then rushes to the battle field.
Sasuke is already in battle with Haku. He is having a hard time. Haku is using his kekkai genkai. (Bloodline traits for certain families.) Crystal Ice mirrors. Sasuke is trapped in his mirrors. Naruto goes inside as well instead of staying outside. Sasuke moves to protect Naruto. Naruto watches him get injured by the needles. He gets emotional. He's never seen a comrade die in battle before. The nine tails chakra starts pouring out of him.
Seriously...that ending really made me want to move on!!
Characters: 4.5 stars out of 5. Naruto-I love you! One of my favorite characters ever!
Kakashi- I love you!
Sakura- Ugh...
Sasuke-*rolls eyes*
Drawing/Writing Style: 5 stars out of 5. Ahh...mazing!

Dislikes: At some parts of the book it was a little confusing. I don't know what is happening. I don't really like this series. I feel if I read vols. 5 and 6, and I don't like those then I just won't read them. I'll stop reading naruto
What mood should you read this book in?: Emotional, Adventure,
Pace: Fast
Likable Characters?: N/A (for all mangas)
Characters or Plot?: Character and PLot so 50/50
Overall, all my ranting is in the dislike section.
I can't beleive that naruto becomes the nine tailed fox because sauske only got knocked out by haku. Why do they need to protect tanzuna because he could just fight them with wood. But he probably does not know that. Can't they all get along like friends. I predict that in the last book everyone teams up against orochimaru and his minons in a battle. I think that naruto is going to save everyone in the village.I can't beleive that naruto becomes the nine tailed fox because sauske only got knocked out by haku. Why do all villages have to hate eachother maybe there could be a bigger nation going to attack. The rest of them are going to die if they don't want to die they want to live they have to band together as one whole nation. Nobody can stop them as one nation the rest will lose to the leaf, sand, waterfall, earth, sound could be better. I predict that everyone will band together because they could kill eachother before naruto would have a chance to change a single thing.
When I started reading this volume, my feelings were different and I just realized that it has been a long time since i watched anime so I really have forgotten about many things.
However, It did not surprise me to see that Zabuza is back with his dangerous and mysterious apprentice Haku, who is having some mysterious technique which draws Naruto and Sasuke into serious and unknown danger. But, Haku does not know that both Sasuke and Naruto also are having something special.
The Ending obviously leaves readers into speculations. A great volume and certainly one of my favorites. Can't wait to read the next volume.
Just when I was thinking I was only so-so on this series, this volume totally ended up getting me hooked. I get it now. It's fun. It also have the feels. I will keep reading.
