7yo Emily would be so happy right now!
Finally got around to reading this book and I'm so pleased it was so close to the movie I adored as a kid. The best scenes are definitely there and they still made me laugh.
As an adult though, I have to say Miss Honey treating Matilda as an equal was... weird to say the least.

Yay! I’m glad it’s similar to the film adaptation because those versions of the characters are very near and dear to my heart. I’ve had this book on my TBR shelf forever so now I just need to read it...and watch the movie 237 more times.
I too felt weird about Miss Honey in the book. Lol
Treating Matilda as an equal is strange... While she's a bright kid, she's still a child.

It’s not weird at all. It would be condescending to treat children as if they were some lesser form of creature.
I actually think all adults should treat children as equals. They are not a lesser form of humans, just younger, and watching the children around me, I am amazed at how much they understand when spoken to with respect and not assuming they are stupid.
What I thought was weirder was the harsh descriptions of the parents, who were, let me admit, horrible people and worse parents-- precursors of Harry Potter's Dursleys relatives, but somehow I can't believe this book was rated "8 years old and up." I guess this was the new wave of realistic children's books.
It’s one thing to treat a child with respect and a whole different thing to take someone else’s child to your cottage in the middle of nowhere and unload your deepest traumas on them.
