WOW! I just finished reading this literally 5 minutes ago and this is the first word that popped in my head WOW! What an emotional ride! I am sitting here with my stomach grumbling from hunger because I was so compelled to finish this book that I skipped eating! I am also thoroughly sad that it is over because I will miss all the characters :-(
I need to take a deep breath and decompress.... and maybe eat a bite before I pass out!..lol...
I have no idea how anyone can dislike this book or give it anything other than 5 whopping stars! It's hard for me to award 5 stars since it seems I am hard to please but this one really deserve them.
It is not really a thriller and that is usually what I read, although there is a death and a mystery, there is no investigation, or police involvement, there is no red herring, misdirection or chase and action (thank God).
If I had to categorize it I would say it's drama, it is about people and their stories, which develop slowly, it is almost 500 pages, and the lies they tell themselves and others, thus the title.
It's about a group of parents and their children all attending a small town school, the relationships that develop between them, and the cat-fights as well.
The characters are very different and their personalities are so well described you feel like they are almost real, and they kind of like become your friends, they are definitely an interesting cast of characters. My favorites are feisty Madeline and her funny and patient husband Ed! Liane Moriarty is definitely good at bringing to life her characters, and she takes her time in getting you to know them.
Although the book grabbed me from the start, it is a bit of a slow burn, and I am usually the impatient sort of reader, but I was able to stick with it, maybe because instead of describing trees and furniture she used her pages to describe people and their feelings and thoughts.
Did I say I loved all her characters??? Well I am saying it again...lol... it is worth reading all 500 pages just to be friends with those people!! Some were a bit less likable but their dynamics were so intriguing.
Of course there is a mystery to propel you to keep reading and find out, but there are also all the different stories about the characters and their "secrets" to find out about, and you won't be disappointed they all have a story to tell!
Although a major portion of the book deals with serious topics like abuse, bullying, DV and trauma, there are also some bits of humor and sarcasm that I found hilarious. It is funny and sad at the same time. Some bits reminds me of Terry McMillan and the sarcastic way in which some of her characters talk.
I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so I won't say too much but it is a beautiful and touching story that will pull @ your heartstrings at the END! It is funny at times, sad, sarcastic, intense and emotional, if you don't feel anything while reading I would schedule a visit with your cardiologist to see if your heart is malfunctioning!...lol...
I would definitely recommend this book. I will also go on the hunt for more of her books! I found a new favorite author thanks to Goodreads!
