"The Deported" is an independent comedy starring Nicholas Turturro as Gianni DiCarlo an Italian American actor struggling to find work. When he offends two crooked INS agents, he finds himself in a small town in Mexico run by kids, and he needs their help to get him back to America.
This is a straight forward comedy with Gianni as the typical Brooklyn Italian American actor (including the accent). The story has Gianni getting himself involved with weirder and weirder characters and situations in the small Mexican town. These characters and scenarios are a bit ridiculous but also funny.
For me the highlight of the film was 'the kid' named Juan, who played the perfect straight-man to Gianni's bewilderment. He is sweet and funny and brings the film back down to Earth.
"The Deported" appears to have a fairly high production level so it doesn't have the look and feel of other low-budget independent films and that should help give it a wider audience. It does get a bit absurd at times, but it's cute and funny. Give it a try!
