Summer in France is a new comedy directed by Mark de Cloe, the director of the Men's Hearts films.
During a holiday, two couples go to France with their children, but despite years of friendship, father Walt (Tjebbo Gerritsma) and mother Marie (Fockeline Ouwerkerk), the mother of the other couple, suddenly start to have feelings for each other.
Together they try to work out their new mutual feelings, but have to make sure that their children and partners don't catch on. To make it easier, they try to link their partners together.
The characters quickly come across as stupid and unrealistic in the story. They make many simple mistakes in an attempt to appear comical, but most of the time it doesn't really work. The characters sometimes seem more like teenagers, who are still developing their hormones. However, the characters already have children, which makes it seem strange rather than really funny. The relationships don't really come across as realistic either, because there is no real chemistry between all the characters.
The story also has a too rushed pace in which relationships are suddenly off, but then on again. Furthermore, little attention has been paid to the details. For example, characters stand in line for a Ferris wheel, but appear to be afraid of heights. Or a character could not lie and does not like this, but later still lies as an excuse.
The film does manage to portray beautiful French environments and culture, but here it also commits the clichés from many comedies that take place in France. Characters often enjoy eating croissants and drinking French wines.
