Some sources, including IMDB, put this film in that genre but it's just a straight drama, not science fiction. (The "aliens" referenced in the title refer to undocumented aliens crossing the US-Mexico border.) If someone watches this film expecting any kind of a science fiction movie, they will be very disappointed. No tech-talk, no action-packed starship battles in space, no goofy sound effects.
Otherwise, it's well produced for what it is. Well written; original story; real characters who are naturally developed and who evolve; wonderful cinematography. It is sometimes difficult when a director/producer stars in their own film, but there are great performances by all of the actors playing the main characters here. However, the poor performances by some of the supporting actors is somewhat distracting at times.
Overall, it's well worth the time if you like character-driven drama.
