- DirectorRoberto BenigniStarsRoberto BenigniNicoletta BraschiCarlo GiuffrèDespite guidance from the Blue Fairy and the love of his father, a wooden puppet's curious spirit leads him into one wild adventure after another.Roberto’s passion project that is so insane it’s like watching an amazing art house film about Pinocchio. I’ve watched a lot of bad movies and this one is easily one of my favorites. 10/10 love the bread hat
- DirectorHarold RamisStarsBill MurrayAndie MacDowellChris ElliottA narcissistic, self-centered weatherman finds himself in a time loop on Groundhog Day.I watched Groundhog Day for the 100th time and it's still fantastic.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsTim Blake NelsonWillie WatsonClancy BrownSix tales of life and violence in the Old West, following a singing gunslinger, a bank robber, a traveling impresario, an elderly prospector, a wagon train, and a perverse pair of bounty hunters.A fantastic collection of subversive western shorts.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.I love Yorgos Lanthimos. The Lobster remains my favorite film of his, but The Favourite is hilarious and depressing. Loved it.
- DirectorBoots RileyStarsLaKeith StanfieldTessa ThompsonJermaine FowlerIn an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed.A dense satire about the current American way of life. Uses surrealism perfectly and the comedy is refreshing. Love it.
- DirectorJonathan LynnStarsEileen BrennanTim CurryMadeline KahnSix guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.This was my first time seeing this comedy classic. Very well written and a lot of fun. Some of the jokes don't hold up and there are a couple really weird gay jokes, but none of them feel mean spirited. It's a campy comedy from 1985 that still holds up.
- DirectorMorgan NevilleStarsFred RogersMargaret WhitmerTom JunodAn exploration of the life, lessons, and legacy of iconic children's television host Fred Rogers.A fantastic documentary that is a positive breath of fresh air. You in a bad mood? Watch this. You might feel sad sometimes, but you'll fell better.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsBryan CranstonKoyu RankinEdward NortonSet in Japan, Isle of Dogs follows a boy's odyssey in search of his lost dog.Every frame is beautiful and detailed. I love Wes Anderson.
- DirectorPenelope SpheerisStarsMike MyersDana CarveyRob LoweTwo slacker friends try to promote their public-access cable show.Pure nostalgia that still holds up, but not sure if first time viewers would enjoy it as much as I personally did.
- DirectorDaniel J. ClarkStarsMark K. SargentPatti SargentHannalore Gerling-DunsmoreMeet real Flat Earthers, a small but growing contingent of people who firmly believe in a conspiracy to suppress the truth that the Earth is flat.A wonderfully done documentary that is poignant and infuriating. At one point they show the lost shoe scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian and it's the perfect analogy for these people.
They're mostly attention and fame seeking people who have a problem with confirmation bias and basically every other logical fallacy you can think of. Oh, and most of them seem to have cats, which was the most disturbing part of the whole film. - DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsAnders Danielsen LieJonas Strand GravliJon ØigardenA three-part story of Norway's worst terrorist attack in which over seventy people were killed. 22 July looks at the disaster itself, the survivors, Norway's political system and the lawyers who worked on this horrific case.A film about the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway. The film focuses on the events of July 22nd, the subsequent trail, and the survivors dealing with the effects of that day. Very well acted and written. It does a fantastic job of telling the complex, emotional story of this tragic event.
After watching this film I was reading more about the events of that day and saw that there is another film about the shooting called Utoya. I will also be watching that.
The only negative I can say is that sometimes the constant shaky cam is annoying and takes away from the drama on screen. I was begging for a still shot at points. - DirectorJohn FortenberryStarsChris KattanWill FerrellRaquel GardnerTwo dim-witted brothers dream of owning their own dance club or at least getting into the coolest and most exclusive club in town, The Roxbury.I haven't seen this movie in at least 10 years and it still holds up. A lot of fun to watch with friends.
- DirectorJon S. BairdStarsSteve CooganJohn C. ReillyShirley HendersonLaurel and Hardy, the world's most famous comedy duo, attempt to reignite their film careers as they embark on what becomes their swan song: a grueling theatre tour of post-war Britain.Just a fantastic film about friendship. Warm, thoughtful, and funny.
- DirectorErik PoppeStarsAndrea BerntzenAleksander HolmenSolveig Koløen BirkelandA teenage girl struggles to survive and to find her younger sister during the July 2011 terrorist mass murder at a political summer camp on the Norwegian island of Utøya.I watched this only a few hours after watching 22 July. While that film covers many aspects of the events that day as well as the aftermath, this film only focuses on the shootings.
The film is one continuous shot that was filmed in real time and is the exact length of the shootings that day. It's a technical masterpiece that is engaging, thrilling, scary, and deeply saddening.
Both Utoya: July 22 and 22 July are great films in their own ways and I highly recommend both. - DirectorLars von TrierStarsMatt DillonBruno GanzUma ThurmanIn five episodes, failed architect and vicious sociopath Jack recounts his elaborately orchestrated murders -- each, as he views them, a towering work of art that defines his life's work as a serial killer in the Pacific Northwest.I really don't know if I hated or loved this film, but I can't deny that many scenes left me feeling extremely uneasy and disturbed. I can't tell if the director is trying to say much more than what is on screen or if he's just insulting the audience sometimes.
Sometimes it really gets up it’s own ass and you’re left just hating the director. At other points it’s beautiful and disgusting at the same time.
It feels like a film that one would have to watch multiple times, but there is no way I'll ever watch this again. It's just too brutal.
I would suggest "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" if you're looking for a great serial killer movie. - DirectorLars von TrierStarsWillem DafoeCharlotte GainsbourgStorm Acheche SahlstrømA grieving couple retreat to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse. So after watching "The House that Jack Built" I decided to watch another Lars von Trier movie. I still don't know if I love or hate this guy.
The movie is so shocking and disturbing that I had to pause it several times just to make it through. The main focus of the film is about depression, anxiety, and tragedy.
While a couple is making love their young son crawls out an open window and falls to his death. The couple retreats to a cabin in the woods to deal with the overwhelming grief.
I don't think anything that happens in the film literally happens and it's all just an allegory for depression and grief. We see what it would be like for people who experienced this tragedy. It's shot to evoke this uneasy state of depression from the audience.
I did not understand the religious and witch references, but I would probably have to watch this again to fully understand. The problem is I don't want to because it's emotionally draining.
I'm going to have to watch another one of his films, but this list so far is Lars von Trier and shitty SNL films. If anyone ever sees this I'm going to look like a psychopath. - DirectorJenner FurstJulia Willoughby NasonStarsBilly McFarlandJake HorowitzPolly MosendzConcert promoters and rapper Ja Rule advertise a high-end festival experience that fails spectacularly when they don't plan for the infrastructure to support the venue, artists and guests.A fantastic documentary about a con-man who cons a giant group of vapid, privileged people. So you'll find yourself hating Billy McFarland, but also not feeling bad about the overprivileged idiots he tricked.
- DirectorJorma TacconeStarsWill ForteKristen WiigVal KilmerFormer special operative MacGruber is called back into action to take down his arch-enemy, Dieter Von Cunth, who's in possession of a nuclear warhead and bent on destroying Washington, D.C.I'm really upset I never saw this movie before. Will Forte and Kristen Wig are perfect together.
- DirectorReginald HudlinStarsTim MeadowsKaryn ParsonsBilly Dee WilliamsThe Saturday Night Live (1975) character gets a big screen treatment.I was really surprised at how well this holds up. The movie overall isn't very good, but the jokes are so well done and Tim Meadows is so funny that it doesn't matter.
- DirectorPhil JohnstonRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillySarah SilvermanGal GadotOn a quest to save the video game 'Sugar Rush' and to find a replacement, Ralph and his best friend Vanellope travel to the World Wide Web through a Wi-Fi router they find at the arcade. Not nearly as good as the original. It’s an enjoyable film, but it really just feels like they’re going from set piece to set piece. There are several small conflicts, but nothing that keeps you invested. Some really strong comedy and a fun way of using other Disney franchises.
- DirectorStephen SurjikStarsMike MyersDana CarveyChristopher WalkenThe inseparable duo try to organize a rock concert while Wayne must fend off a record producer who has an eye for his girlfriend.Basically more like Austin Powers 0.5 than a sequel to the original. It's true that the original had a lot of pop culture bits, but this film uses those bits as the film's foundation. It's a lot of parody that was funny, but it hasn't aged as well. That said - It's not a bad film and it does have some really good moments.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.I really, really wanted to like this film, but I couldn’t. It’s easily one of my least favorite marvel films. The jokes are the worst in the series. The plot is way too predictable (even for a super hero movie). The story is disjointed and lazily written. They make Nick Fury a complete moron. I can’t fault any of the actors because the script feels like it was written by a cliche machine. The dialogue is so bad that i don’t know how anyone could make it sound good. The action scenes are boring, confusing, and most of the time feel like they just happen for no real reason. It’s a garbage film that they tried to fill with nostalgia that has already been covered a thousand times. HAHAHA SHE’S IN A BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO. THOSE DON’T EXSIST ANYMORE! Yeah, we know. It’s been awhile now and the joke is dead. If I was a woman I would feel insulted at the way they’ve shoehorned in the women empowerment into scenes that are cartoonish, stupid, and have been seen in a million horrible sitcom episodes. None of it feels sincere. It all feels corporate, safe and for the lowest common denominator. Marvel could have taken some real risks with this, but it feels like a bad phase 1 film. The good news is they’ve shown they can make sequels that are better. The bad news is this has good reviews somehow so nothing with change.
- DirectorRob MarshallStarsEmily BluntLin-Manuel MirandaBen WhishawA few decades after her original visit, Mary Poppins, the magical nanny, returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives.Towards the end of the movie, during the "Nowhere to Go But Up" song, Angela Lansbury starts handing out balloons to people. It's only purpose in the film is to be a tip of the hat to "Let's Go Fly A Kite".
At this point the main storyline has already been resolved and the audience is left wondering why they're all still here and how there is somehow 15 minutes left in this film.
Anyway, the stupid balloon song starts and you basically just watch Angela Lansbury hand out balloons to people that magically causes them to be put into a horrible wire rigging and dangled in front of a green screen. It looks so bad and the song is so long that I got upset every time Angela Lansbury started handing out another balloon.
It's 2 hours and 10 minutes. It needed to be 90 minutes or better yet never be made. If there was ever a sequel that never needed to be made it was this film. Never has such a mediocre film made me so upset. - DirectorSusanne BierStarsSandra BullockTrevante RhodesJohn MalkovichFive years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.Clearly just riding off the coattails of A Quiet Place, Bird Box instead says "Hey, instead of not being able to talk, how about you can't see now?" The problem is the script, editing, cinematography, and directing are all well below the standards presented by A Quiet Place.
The pacing is probably the films biggest flaw. Every scene has the same shot length and tone no matter what information is being presented. Because of this the film seems to carry no weight to it.
The end of the world is happening, but the survivors seem pretty okay with it considering all their friends and family members are probably dead. Instead of focusing on surviving or grieving they bicker with each other like every other awful horror film.
I never once cared about any of the characters. How are we still making horror/thriller films with these same lazy, boring character tropes? These characters have all been parodied in countless films.
It’s vapid and boring. At no point did I ever not know I was watching a movie. - DirectorBrian HensonStarsMelissa McCarthyElizabeth BanksMaya RudolphWhen the puppet cast of a '90s children's TV show begin to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case. The idea for a film like this is fantastic. Unfortunately this script is horrible, the acting is horrible, and because of that we probably won't get to see something like this again.
It's a real shame because I think a raunchy, puppet comedy film could be a really fun and interesting way to tell a story.
