Acting is one of the highest-paying jobs in the film industry and when one is a star, they can command salaries in the millions. Many actors have increased their net worth to hundreds of millions due to their increased salaries. However, some have also fumbled and reduced their worth by spending lavishly.
From A-listers to reality TV stars, many have been vocal about their poor financial decisions, to the point where some have even declared bankruptcy. While some actors attributed it to spending more than their income, some just made poor spending decisions that ended up biting them back. Here are 10 Hollywood actors who went broke for dumb reasons.
1. Nicolas Cage

The Greek government has further delayed reopening the country’s popular 40% tax rebate for international film and TV productions until January 2025 as it strives to clear a funding backlog and receive a fresh budget.
The rebate has been closed for new applications since May 1. It was expected to formally reopen on October 1, administered by the newly-created Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre - Creative Greece (Hfac-Creative Greece).
However, Screen understands international film and TV productions hoping to shoot in Greece this year have been assured by Leonidas Christopoulos, CEO of Hfac-Creative Greece, they will be still able to access the rebate.

Aubrey Plaza is securing major roles lately, but for us and our readers, her most notable role is as Rio Vidal in the MCU’s Agatha All Along.
While Plaza has officially joined the MCU, she’s not part of the Avengers; instead, she’s taking on something even cooler—joining Agatha Harkness’ coven, which is currently traversing the Witches’ Road.
Plaza plays Rio Vidal, a Green Witch and romantic rival to Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness. Some intriguing interactions between the two were hinted at in Episode 4, and we’re eager to uncover their past, especially given that Rio seems intent on killing Agatha, her former lover.
If Plaza weren’t already part of Agatha’s makeshift coven, she mentioned she would choose a more interesting lineup (though that might depend on who you ask). The actress recently appeared on The Daily Show, where she was asked whom she...

Aubrey Plaza is lining up huge roles in recent times, but for us and our readers currently, the most notable role is that of Rio Vidal in MCU’s ‘Agatha All Along.’
Yes, Plaza has joined the MCU, but she did not join the Avengers however, it’s something far cooler, Agatha Harkness’ coven which is currently on the Witches’ Road.
Plaza portrays Rio Vidal, a Green Witch and romantic antagonist to Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness. Some spicy interactions between the two of them were already teased in Episode 4 and we’re truly looking forward to seeing what happened in the past. Especially considering that Rio Vidal is trying to apparently kill Agatha, her former lover.
If Plaza wasn’t currently a part of Agatha’s makeshift coven, she revealed she would pick a more interesting team ( depending on who you ask that is.) The actress recently appeared on...

Actor Tom Cruise is known for his utmost dedication to the cinematic experience. In 2022, he ‘saved cinema’ by releasing the air-force action film Top Gun: Maverick, which earned more than a billion at the box office and is credited with bringing back audiences to theaters. He has supported good cinema since the beginning of his career.
Even before he revived the exhibition industry after the pandemic with Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise reportedly helped out budding filmmakers he saw potential in. His endorsement for 1998’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels reportedly saved the producers from retiring before they even started and launched the careers of Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie.

Edward Norton still has the honor of starring in the only solo Hulk movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he is also one of the few actors to have their role replaced in the series that spans over 30 movies and 10 canonical shows. Ruffalo began his MCU journey a dozen years ago in the first Avengers blockbuster; where he “incredibly” captured the duality of Banner/Hulk better than any prior performer. Ruffalo managed to pull off the feat in a team-up event, whereas Norton, and a pre-mcu Eric Bana, had an entire feature dedicated to the hero.
Ruffalo immediately connected with audiences more than any of his predecessors, which raised the bar for how compelling this hero could be in live-action, while also rounding out the Avengers ensemble wonderfully. He gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe a big green hand to help lift the franchise to stratospheric heights. Without individual projects to focus on,...

Francis Ford Coppola has revealed the movie he is most proud of. The answer may surprise some.
In a Q&a session on X (formerly Twitter) today, the legendary filmmaker was asked by one fan: “Out of all the films that you’ve made, which one would you say you are the most proud of having made, or which one do you feel best captures your ideas of film as an art form?”
Few living filmmakers have a catalogue to rival Coppola: The Godfather films, Apocalypse Now and The Conversation, to name a few of his most acclaimed.
But those weren’t his choice today. The filmmaker was torn, but replied: “That’s like asking someone with 7 kids, who’s the best? I love them all, but if scratched deeper I might say Rumblefish”.
Interesting choice for sure. 1983 drama Rumble Fish is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton,...

Editor’s Note: The following story contains some spoilers for “Red Rooms.”
If the definition of the word “hybristophilia” in the dictionary doesn’t appeal to you, read no further.
From a face-powdered Nicolas Cage in “Longlegs” to a hot Josh Hartnett in “Trap” and a loose riff on Night Stalker Richard Ramirez in “MaXXXine,” 2024 has seen a return of the serial killer movie to the mainstream. Enter “Red Rooms,” a perverse French-Canadian indie off the 2023 festival circuit, to flip the script on the genre — to squarely put you in the perspective of a true crime junkie chasing the total experience — and make you feel even more dirty and lost than any of those films ever could. It’s a movie even the director felt “sadistic” making.

Whether you think it was a hilarious exercise in creative chaos or just a bunch of dumb bullshit, you can’t deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s dubiously guided epic Megalopolis was a box-office disaster. Having brought in only about $4 million, it had the worst opening weekend of any widely released film with a budget over $100 million in history.
How did this happen? Well, being a man, Coppola spends a lot of time thinking about the Roman empire. He’s wanted to make a movie about it set in modern-day New York City since the 1970s, but almost as if the universe was trying to tell him something, life always got in the way. A string of box-office failures meant he had to focus on the surefire hits, like *consults notes* 1996’s Jack. Actors who had been cast years earlier had aged out of their roles. An entire 9/11 happened. These are what we call “signs.

We’ve all been eagerly awaiting the first look at Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man for some time. We got a taste of his portrayal as Spider-Noir via Sony’s amazing 2018 Into the Spider-Verse. Now we have the real thing!
X user @CanWeGetSomeToast posted two shots of Nicolas Cage as the alternate universe Spider-Man, thanks to @JustJared.
While the on-set photos don’t show Cage in the full Spider-Noir getup, we do see the trademark black trenchcoat.
It’s unclear if Cage will go full-Spidey in the show since it picks up after Peter Parker’s prime as New York’s web-slinging superhero. What we do know is that at least one recognizable supporting character will pop up, Robbie Robertson (Lamorne Morris).
During the same month Spider-Noir was set to start shooting (August), it was rumored that the production was suffering from budget issues. Since then, things have been pretty quiet.

Hot on the heels of Max's series "The Penguin," another comic book character is getting his own TV show full of rain-soaked city streets and chiaroscuro lighting. After making his voice debut as Spider-Man Noir in the animated feature "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," Nicolas Cage is making the leap to live-action in "Spider-Noir." The series is currently filming, and it's set to premiere on MGM+ and Prime Video some time next year. "22 Jump Street" co-writer Oren Uziel and "The Punisher" creator Steve Lightfoot are serving as showrunners.
The need to protect plot secrets has confined a lot of comic book shows to working in studios or in remote locations unlikely to be haunted by paparazzi. "Spider-Noir" however, has taken directly to the streets of Los Angeles (which are doubling as the streets of New York), which means we now have our first look at Nicolas Cage in Spider-Man Noir's trademark giant trenchcoat,...

Longlegs star Nicolas Cage voiced the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man Noir in the animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and we’re going to have the chance to watch him play the character in live-action in the upcoming MGM+ and Prime Video series that’s going by the title Spider-Noir. That show is currently in production, and Cage has been spotted on set. Images of him can be seen in the Instagram embeds below – but before you scroll down, I’ll warn you that you shouldn’t expect to see Cage in the full Spider-Man Noir costume in these images. The spy pics only show him wearing a trenchcoat, with no sign of his mask.
Spider-Noir has Cage taking on the role of an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.

The highest-grossing independent film of the year, Longlegs stars Maika Monroe as an FBI agent in pursuit of the titular serial killer, played by Nicolas Cage.
Among the special features on the just-released physical media editions is a refreshingly forthright audio commentary by writer-director Osgood Perkins.
Here are nine things I learned from the Longlegs commentary track.
1. Perkins considers Longlegs a “pop horror movie.”
Perkins refers to the film as a “pop horror movie” several times in the commentary. “By that, I mean that it’s a horror movie that knows it’s a horror movie,” he explains. “There’s supposed to be sort of a modern quality to that.”
Referring to the opening credit sequence, he says “These big, red squares at the beginning of the movie feel ‘pop’ to me. Josef Albers is always an inspiration for things that are visual. Warhol. These big, red squares at the...

Prime Video's live-action Spider-Noir series officially began filming this week, and we got our first glimpse of star Nicolas Cage shooting a scene last night.
Now, Just Jared has shared some more set photos, giving us a much better look at Cage in his '30s attire while also confirming the show's main(?) villain.
As you'll see below, Cage is carrying a Daily Bugle newspaper prop in several photos, and the headline reads: "Silvermane Survives in Skivvies." Previous rumors have claimed that Silvio Manfredi, aka Silvermane, will be the primary antagonist. While that remains to be seen, he is clearly going to be a part of the show.
Hopefully, we'll get to see Cage suited-up as Spider-Man Noir soon (though the full costume really only adds a mask to the get-up he's wearing here). For now, have a look at the new set photos at the link below and let us know what you think.

Alex Wolff slides into a plush chair at the Mandarin Oriental in New York’s Columbus Circle and orders a massive breakfast. By his own admission, he’s hungover, but he looks perfectly put together in that East Village kind of way. Nicolas Cage‘s Daily Bugle prop newspaper might be revealing some big information about his new series, Spider-Noir!
The 60-year-old actor filmed the Spider-Man universe series, where he portrays Spider-Man Noir, on Wednesday (October 2) in front of a church in Los Angeles.
His newspaper he was holding while filming read, “Silvermane Survives in Skivvies.” Silvermane – aka Silvio Manfredi – is a major criminal in the Marvel Comics. He eventually becomes a crime boss after being a career criminal.
Here’s the show’s logline: The series “tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”
This is not Nicholas‘ first time playing Spider-Man Noir. He voiced the role in the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Noir has been officially ordered to series already at MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Nicholas Cage is one of Hollywood’s most decorated actors who has worked on brilliant projects in the past. Cage’s career was set, especially since he was born into an artistic family, the Coppolas. His father was August Coppola, who happens to be related to the legendary Francis Ford Coppola and several other big names who have worked in the movie industry.
Cage has been in many relationships over the years, including five marriages. His first marriage was to actress Patricia Arquette (1995-2001), followed by a short stint with Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie (2002-04). Then, he married Alice Kim, a waitress who worked in LA. Their marriage lasted for 12 years before ending in 2016.

Cameras are now rolling on Prime Video's Spider-Noir series, which will introduce a live-action take on Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man Noir from the animated Into The Spider-Verse movies.
Just Jared has shared the first photos from the set, and they reveal Cage filming a scene as the titular washed-up crime-fighter. We don't have much context for the sequence being shot, but the site notes that Cage's character appears to have been "knocked over by something in the scene."
The show's official logline says Spider-Noir “tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”
Though this has yet to be officially confirmed, Cage is believed to be playing a new take on Peter Parker's genetic clone, Ben Reilly, aka the Scarlet Spider.

Amazon Prime Video and MGM+'s Spider-Noir TV series will star Nic Cage as an ageing and down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.
Shooting has begun on the show, though it appears to be another Sony-produced Marvel project taking significant liberties with the comic books (this Variant of Spider-Man Noir will be Ben Reilly instead of Peter Parker).
Joker: Folie à Deux star Brendon Gleeson is playing Spider-Noir's villain and broke his silence on the role in a recent interview with Variety.
"It was brief because it was just at a reading, but it was nice because it was enough to say 'Yeah, that's exactly who I thought it'd be,'" the actor said of recently meeting Cage. "He's great, he's really great, and I can't wait to get going.

Love in Hollywood has often been found to be as tough as acting. While some turn out to be lucky enough to find their soulmates through onscreen chemistry that continues offscreen to result in a lifetime bond, others simply seem to hit it off in the beginning but fail to keep the spark alive.
Of course, a lot of onscreen chemistries have even led to marriages in Hollywood, with some of them lasting for decades while others couldn’t even make it up to a few years. Meanwhile, there is one other category of celebs as well: Those who just seem to find love again and again, considering just how many times and people they have decided to tie the knot with.
While not many names come under this last category, there are still some significant additions. From big names like Nicolas Cage, Pamela Anderson, Rita Hayworth, and even Martin Scorsese,...

Variety will honor Amy Poehler with the Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award at the Newport Beach Festival on Sunday, October 20. The award is reserved for those who have broken barriers in the industry and withstood the test of time. Poehler will accept the honor for her career achievements, including the recent success of “Inside Out 2.”
Reprising her role as the voice of Joy in “Inside Out 2,” Poehler served as a leader of the emotions inside Riley’s head and as a star driving the film’s extraordinary success. It’s the highest-grossing animated film of all time and tops the charts among all films released in 2024 with over $1.6 billion at the global box office.

One of Nicolas Cage's most endearing traits is that he's an unapologetic nerd. It's all right there in the name. He was born Nicolas Kim Coppola on January 7, 1964, but when he landed his first starring role 19 years later in Martha Coolidge's "Valley Girl," he rechristened himself Nicolas Cage as a nod to the Marvel Comics character Luke Cage. Since then, he's been eager to share his love for comic books, science-fiction and horror, and has actively sought out roles in these genres and, to disappointingly little success, the Marvel movie universe (with "Ghost Rider" and "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance").
So it should come as no surprise that Cage is a self-described, hardcore Trekkie. He grew up on the original series, and he's long preferred the Trek universe in all its myriad iterations and spinoffs to "Star Wars. "I'm not really down [with Star Wars]," Cage told Variety in 2023. "I'm a Trekkie,...

Tim Burton has always been an outlier in Hollywood. He's a filmmaker with a distinct, peculiar aesthetic and set of interests, yet his movies have broad appeal and are remarkably consistent in the way they perform financially. Even Burton's weakest franchise films bear the sort of directorial hallmarks that are often missing from tentpoles in the 21st century. Indeed, say what you will against his "Dark Shadows," but only Burton could have enough pull to get a $150 million movie reboot of a cult '60s soap opera oddity green-lit in 2012 while also making it precisely the way he wanted. It's the same reason the critically-derided horror-comedy has found its share of defenders.
Be that as it may, having to deal with the relentless friction between creativity and commerce has taken its toll on Burton in the past. His 1996 sci-fi...

To the outside observer it may seem like every single year is called “one of the best years for horror ever,” but I’m going to let you in on a little secret: It’s never a bad year for horror. The entertainment industry damn near runs on scary movies, which are cheap to produce and able to take artistic risks that bigger budget genre films — the ones that have to sell tickets to everybody just to break in — are too timid to even consider. You can always find great horror movies. The trick is knowing where to look.
And that right there is the trick, because smaller movies don’t have huge advertising budgets, and they don’t drive traffic so publications can’t always allocate the resources to cover them. Great horror movies fall through the cracks all the time. Heck, even major theatrical releases don’t get...

Documentary “Shadowland” – which has its world premiere at Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest on Oct. 5 – was supposed to be a “happy story” set in the French Pyrenees, a place known for its mysteries.
Embracing magic and witchcraft, spiritual “seekers” from all paths of life settle there, hoping to find the greatest treasure – the Holy Grail – or experience supernatural encounters.
One of those was cult director Richard Stanley, who claimed he saw local deity the White Lady, earning the respect of the close-knit community. As well as being a long-time resident of the area, Stanley also worked as a tour guide there.
Stanley made his name with horror films like “Hardware” and “Dust Devil,” but after he was fired from “The Island of Dr. Moreau,” starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, he took a 20-plus year break from feature filmmaking before returning with 2019’s “Color Out of Space,” starring Nicolas Cage.

Paddington is set to continue his adventures on screens big and small, as StudioCanal plans a Paddington 4 film and a television series.
It is almost a cliche by now to say that Paddington 2 is quite possibly one of the greatest family comedies ever made. In the words of Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, “Paddington 2 is incredible”. It’s one of the few films that really does live up to the hype, with Paul King’s direction and the screenplay he co-wrote with Simon Farnaby coalescing into one of the most wholesome, funny films in years.
That is quite a legacy to live up to, and we don’t have long to wait either – Paddington In Peru hits UK cinemas on the 8th November. King and Farnaby stayed on to co-write the story with Mark Burton, while the latter co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Foster and James Lamont.

Humble Beginnings and Stardom Johnny Depp has always been a misfit even before he was an actor. When he was young, he didn’t plan to graduate high school, and ended up dropping out to become a musician. He was a guitarist for a band called the Kids. He and his band moved to Los Angeles. During his time in the band, he became a struggling musician, but ended up finding steady work as an actor since he was introduced to Nicolas Cage by his then-wife Lori Anne Allison. Nicholas helped Johnny to audition for Wes Craven for the low-budget horror film ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street.’ The film achieved international success since it scared its audiences and featured a memorable kill by showing a young Johnny Depp being brutally killed by the boogeyman, Freddy Krueger (played by Robert Englund). 1980s The following year, Johnny Depp starred in ‘Private Resort...

After helping leading Longlegs to box-office success this past summer, Maika Monroe is ready to star in another iconic horror thriller as she is set to star in 20th Century’s new take on the 1992 classic The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Michelle Garza Cervera will direct the pic with Micah Bloomberg penning the script.
The original film starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra and follows a woman, played by De Mornay, who after her sex offender husband gets caught in the act and kills himself, embarks on a mission of vengeance against one of her husband’s victims and the woman’s family. Monroe will step into the role made famous by De Mornay while the other role originally played by Sciorra is still open.
The original screenplay was written by Amanda Silver and the film was executive produced by Rick Jaffa who then became the writing team of Jaffa/Silver
Ted Field will produce through Radar Pictures as well as Michael Schaefer & Mike Larocca who will produce through Department M. Michael Napoliello & Maria Frisk are overseeing for Radar.
Monroe has become one of the more sought after actors in town after the success of Longlegs, which has become the biggest indie of the year and instantly became the top choice to star in this pic who was just excited to jump into this iconic villain role.
Monroe most recently starred in Oz Perkin’s Longlegs opposite Nicolas Cage, which made over $100 million at the box office, making it the most successful indie horror movie in the past ten years. She played the lead in Chloe Okuno’s Watcher, and broke out in David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows.
Her other film credits include Hot Summer Nights with Timothee Chalamet and Villains with Bill Skarsgaard.
Garza Cervera gained recognition for her debut feature Huesera, which has received acclaim since its premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won Best New Narrative Director and the Nora Ephron Award. Huesera has since accumulated over 40 awards worldwide, including the Citizen Kane Award and the Blood Window Award at the Sitges Film Festival, and earned 17 nominations at the Mexican Academy’s Ariel Awards, winning Best First Feature, Original Screenplay, Makeup, and Special Effects. She was also selected for the 2023 Sundance Momentum Fellowship and was nominated for Breakthrough Director at the 2023 Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Garza Cervera is represented by WME, Grandview and Hwhm+F. Monroe is repped by WME, Entertainment 360, Felker Toczek Suddleson McGinnis Ryan Llp. UTA and represented by lawyer Bethany Haynes at Sloss Law.

Nicolas Cage’s net worth should’ve come to par with some of the A-listers in Hollywood. At one point in his career, Cage was one of the highest-paid actors in the industry, earning $20 million each for Gone in Sixty Seconds, Windtalkers, and National Treasure. However, his net worth came crashing down when his spending habits got out of his hands.

He owed debts to the IRS and a couple of other financial institutions. The actor claimed that he paid off the debts by taking on multiple films in a year, including even video-on-demand movies. His net worth went from over $100 million in the early 2000s to a mere $25 million and is currently reported to be $40 million.

When producer David Beaubaire was an executive at Warner Bros., DreamWorks, Paramount, and Sony, he made movies like “Up in the Air,” “Dreamgirls,” “Flight,” and “The Big Short” — the kinds of original studio projects that aren’t often made today.
Development has always been a gamble, requiring many years and millions of dollars for a film that’s more likely to flop than to hit — if it ever gets made at all. It’s also become increasingly rare. Beaubaire studied 505 films released and/or to be released by major studios between 2022 and 2026 and found that the titles championed by a studio executive — someone who courted filmmakers and talent, went through rewrites, and saw it through to its release — accounted for 10 percent of the total.
Some of these films, like Paramount’s “The Lost City” and “One Love: Bob Marley,” or Universal’s “Cocaine Bear,” became modest hits. Others were intended for streaming,...

In Michael Samoski's 2021 drama "Pig," Nicolas Cage plays a quiet, bearded recluse named Rob Feld who lives in a remote woodland cabin with his unnamed pet pig. The pig is a skilled truffle forager, and Rob makes a living selling truffles to a restaurant supplier (Alex Wolff) who occasionally drives out to his cabin. Rob clearly has a dark past, but has seemingly found peace in the woods. One night, however, Rob is attacked, and his pig is stolen. Rob has to trek into nearby Portland to retrieve his animal friend, and, we learn, confront his past.
As the film progresses, we discover that Rob had unusual connections in the world of Portland's high-end restaurateurs, and that he participated in eatery-related underground fighting rings (!). He's also still in mourning over the death of his wife years before, which was the primary impetus driving Rob to become a recluse. More than anything,...
