He’s emerging as a leading contender for his first Academy Award — a compelling performance that may prove difficult for voters to ignore.

On Wednesday night in Los Angeles, Searchlight Pictures hosted two packed screenings of “A Complete Unknown” at the Fox Lot, followed by Q&a sessions featuring director and co-writer James Mangold, actors Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning, costume designer Arianne Phillips, and production designer François Audouy. Chalamet, currently filming Josh Safdie’s new period project “Marty Supreme,” was notably absent, but his presence wasn’t needed to dominate the conversation.

The long-standing debate about what separates a lead from a supporting performance has resurfaced this awards season. Case in point: Netflix’s high-profile contender “Emilia Pérez.” The Spanish-language musical, directed by acclaimed French auteur Jacques Audiard, has already garnered enthusiastic reviews and is poised to be a significant player across multiple Oscar categories. But the studio’s decision to campaign Karla Sofía Gascón as best actress while positioning her co-star Zoe Saldaña as a supporting actress has sparked a heated discussion.

Saldaña’s role as Rita, a lawyer who aids the drug cartel boss Manitas in faking her death, undergoing gender-affirming surgery, and emerging as “Emilia Pérez,” propels the film’s narrative. Her extensive screen time supports this argument.

According to Matthew Stewart of Screen Time Central, Saldaña’s performance clocks in at 57 minutes and 50 seconds, representing 43.69% of the film’s runtime. It’s also slightly more than Gascón’s 52 minutes and 21 seconds (39.54%) on film.

The Wicked star and her production company, Edith’s Daughter, have signed a first-look film deal with the studio, Universal announced Wednesday.

No projects were revealed but the pact does build on the relationship the Tony, Grammy and Emmy award-winning actress has built in the several years with the studio and its specialty studio Focus Features. Erivo is starring in Wicked, which is shaping up to open massively this coming weekend and will follow up a year later with Wicked Part Two. She also earned an Oscar nomination for her starring turn in Focus’ biopic Harriet. The actress earned raves for her stage work in The Color Purple in the mid-2010s and made her film debut in the 2019 Steve McQueen thriller Widows.

Peacock has announced that the fourth installment in the Renée Zellweger film franchise will bypass theaters in the United States. Following an international theatrical release on Wednesday, Feb. 12, the sequel will land Stateside on Thursday, Feb. 13, where it will stream exclusively on Peacock.

Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is back once again — and now, in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” she’s a widow. Yes, for those who don’t keep up with the novels by Helen Fielding, Mr. Darcy is now dead. It’s been four years, so single mum Bridget is ready for some sex. Ding dong!

Joining the cast of suitors for the fourth go-round are Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall (“One Day”), in addition to a returning Hugh Grant. There’s also at least a cameo appearance by Mark Darcy himself (Colin Firth).

The first trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has been released, and Renée Zellweger’s Bridget is still looking for love as she comes to terms with the tragedy of losing Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Yep, you read that correctly, Darcy is no more and the trailer serves up the bad news straight away.

Still, the only way is up for our Bridget as she gets on with life, and the prospect of not one but two possible romances. There’s the hunky and age-appropriate Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a teacher at Bridget’s children’s school and the wild card of Roxster (Leo Woodall), the youthful bit of rough that should be a red flag.

Paul Engelen, the British makeup designer who earned two Emmys and two Oscar nominations in a fabulous career that included work on Reds, Batman, The Phantom Menace, Gladiator and Game of Thrones, has died. He was 75.

Engelen died Nov. 3 of cancer at his home in West Sussex, England, his son-in-law (and fellow makeup designer) Daniel Lawson Johnston told The Hollywood Reporter.

Engelen also did makeup for three James Bonds — Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig — on the 007 films The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), Die Another Day (2002), Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008).

He teamed with Blake Edwards on Victor/Victoria (1982), Trail of the Pink Panther (1982) and Curse of the Pink Panther (1983), with Steven Spielberg on Empire of the Sun (1987) and Munich (2005) and with Ridley Scott on Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005) and Robin Hood (2010).

Hugh Grant is spilling some details about Bridget Jones 4, aka Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

The film will be released on February 12, 2025.

Hugh starred as Daniel Cleaver alongside the Renee Zellweger in the first two films: 2001′s Bridget Jones’s Diary and 2004′s The Edge of Reason. Hugh did not return for 2016′s Bridget Jones’s Baby, but will be in the latest film.

“It’s the one with the most heart,” Hugh said to Extra. “It’s very moving, but also very funny.”

He added that it’s “the best” of the three previous films.

We’re happy to report that several stars from the previous films will be back, but one big star’s name was glaringly left out of the press release and it’s seemingly been confirmed that he’s exiting!

Matthew McConaughey‘s career has had more ups and downs than a sentence delivered in his usual Texas twang. Ant revived defunct British automaker Radford in 2020, aiming to build high-end, custom sports cars. In 2023, he and Formula One champ Jenson Button starred in the five-part docuseries called Radford Reborn. They created a Lotus-Radford Type 62-2 supercar.

ANt said at the time it was high risk, and he and six other people were privately funding the company.

“One Day” star Leo Woodall swaps TV presenting for complex math problems in his latest series, “Prime Target.”

In first-look images from the upcoming Apple TV+ thriller, Woodall is dressed up as math postgraduate Edward Brooks, complete with tweed jacket and leather-bound notebook, while co-star Quintessa Swindell (“Black Adam”) plays no-nonsense Nsa agent Taylah Sanders.

“Prime Target” follows Brooks, who is on the verge of a major computational breakthrough, as he realizes someone is trying to destroy his idea – while Sanders has been ordered to spy on him and report on his behavior. Together, they begin to realize that Brooks is in fact at the heart of a troubling conspiracy.

Author Helen Fielding recently opened up about her newfound fanbase at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and how the titular character has become even more relevant to friends of her 18-year-old daughter, amid the age of TikTok and the Body Positivity Movement.

“What’s good now is that there’s a new audience for Bridget that’s young, that’s Gen Z,” she said, according to BBC. “I’m really happy when 18-year-olds and 20-year-olds come with their books and talk to me about it and say that they find it comforting to laugh at these things.”

Fielding added, “I spent the last two years surrounded by teenage girls, because they all came to my house, and I can see what they’ve got in common with Bridget.
