Hunter Parrish has joined Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis in “Scarpetta,” an upcoming mystery thriller series from Blumhouse Television that has already been greenlit for two seasons by Amazon Prime Video.
The “Weeds” alum joins an ensemble that also includes Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, Rosy McEwen and Jake Cannavale.
The series, an adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels, hails from Blumhouse and Amazon MGM Studios. Liz Sarnoff will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
According to the logline, the show “follows Kay Scarpetta (Kidman), the chief medical examiner, as she returns to Virginia and resumes her former position with complex relationships, both personal and professional – including her sister Dorothy (Curtis), with plenty of grudges and secrets to uncover.”
Parrish will recur as the younger version of Benton Wesley, presumably in flashbacks. Benton is an FBI profiler who strikes up a romance with Kay in the books.

The Bay Area’s newest film festival has a curious dress code.
“No blue, green, orange, gray or all-white clothing,” reads an email sent to attendees by an event organizer. White is allowed if combined with other colors, but all black is always safe, the instructions continue. Open-toed and open-backed shoes are not permitted.
Rules like that come with the territory when you’re planning the world’s first-ever film festival inside a prison.
The San Quentin Film Festival, taking place Oct. 10-11 at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, aims to help “system-impacted people to be seen, heard and felt,” says co-founder Rahsaan “New York” Thomas. A documentary filmmaker whose career began while he was incarcerated at San Quentin, Thomas directs the festival alongside his close friend, screenwriter Cori Thomas (no relation), whom he first met in 2016 when she visited the prison to conduct research and reporting for a podcast...

In today’s troubled political times, “The West Wing” feels even more quaint and nostalgic than it did when it premiered 25 years ago, which means we need it now more than ever. An idealized vision of a Presidential administration functioning at its very best despite Washington’s many complications, the Aaron Sorkin-created series captivated audiences with its whip-smart dialogue and dense storytelling. In honor of its 25th anniversary, let’s take a look back at 20 of its greatest episodes, ranked worst to best.
“The West Wing” centered on the ins and outs of a White House staff, with Martin Sheen front and center as the noble, dedicated President Jed Bartlet. There’s Chief of Staff Leo McGarry (John Spencer), Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Communications Director Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Press Secretary C.J. Utilizing plot devices like temporal shenanigans to serve up a critique of life, self-acceptance, and mortality isn’t too unique concept in sci-fi narratives anymore. In that context, Omni Loop is a simple story of a dying physicist trying her desperate best to grapple with her fate. What elevates the movie compared to other stories with a similar premise is the way it uses the concept as a means of providing clarity and understanding, building up relationship dynamics, and charting the transformation in the psyche of the characters. Additionally, Mary-Louise Parker and Ayo Edebiri do a remarkable job as the mentor-protégé duo trying to de-mystify the concept of time travel in order to get another shot at their lives, and it feels good to have female leads for a change in a movie like this. as it offers a new perspective. The only major drawback is probably the fact that...

The time loop film is an exciting subgenre of sci-fi that’s grown even more popular after Covid brought us all into our own Groundhog Day. Writer/director Bernardo Brito offers the latest interpretation of the genre in Omni Loop, a more sentimental twist on the genre about an aging woman living the same week over and over in an attempt to prevent her soon-coming death. Led by an excellent Mary-Louise Parker and a solid Ayo Edebiri, this certainly isn’t the most entertaining film of its subgenre, but it offers plenty to chew on.

The movies do not deserve Mary Louise Parker. Her work in the New York theater scene since the 1990s has been rightfully praised from Broadway to the Battery, and the serialized nature of television has allowed her to flex character-developing muscles and play the emotional scales several times over; say what you will about those later seasons of Weeds, the Showtime dramedy that cast Parker as a pot-selling suburbanite, but she always managed to throw in a look, an offbeat line reading or a bit of business that provided a nice second-hand high.

When doctors tell Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker), the quantum physicist at the center of Omni Loop, that she has a black hole growing inside her chest and little time left to live, she seems oddly unfazed. A montage speeds us through the next few days of her life as she’s taken home from the hospital, then to the beach by her family, who surprise her with a candle-covered cake two weeks ahead of her actual birthday, which she likely won’t live to see.
Throughout each of those scenes, Zoya sits in the center of the frame, staring forward with a placid look on her face. It would be fair to assume that hers is a state of shock—the look of a woman who’s unable to process the finality, maybe even the absurdity, of her diagnosis. In truth, though, Zoya seems so unmoved because she’s seen all of this before.

The recently released film adaption of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel “It End with Us” was a lot of things and has certainly gotten a lot of people talking. It’s unfortunate, however, that the most important subjects at its center — that of domestic violence and emotional abuse — have not been top-of-mind for most conversations regarding the film, but rather alleged personal riffs between star Blake Lively and director/co-star Justin Baldoni. When domestic violence and abuse have been discussed in reference to the film, it has typically been with criticism over how the film and its rollout have avoided more thoughtfully grappling with these themes, rarely reaching for a narrative that goes any deeper than a casual beach read.
In speaking on adapting Hoover’s novel for the screen in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baldoni acknowledged his interest in focusing on how Lively’s character, Lily Bloom, overcomes her circumstances,...

The Bear's Ayo Edebiri star continues to rise as she takes a central role in time loop film Omni Loop, opposite Mary-Louise Parker.
Excuse the poor time travel gag, but what is it about time loop movies that never gets old?
We’ve seen the narrative conceit bolted on to almost every genre imaginable at this point, but it’s an idea that still feels fresh even though the decades since 1993’s Groundhog Day have given us Edge Of Tomorrow, Palm Springs, Happy Death Day, Source Code and more. There’s a whole range of genres in that list alone and the list of time loop movies goes way beyond that smattering of titles.
Get set for another entry in the genre, with the arrival of Omni Loop in September. The film premiered at South by Southwest in March of this year. Ahead of the film’s release in the US next month,...

Before the age of Primetime Emmy Awards sweeps for comedy “Schitt’s Creek” and drama “The Crown” – a trend that could very well continue this year by either “The Bear” or “Shōgun” – there was “Angels in America.” The HBO miniseries adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tony Kushner won 11 Emmys back in 2004 and famously took home the prizes in all seven top categories, making it the very first program to do so. This year’s 76th annual ceremony marks the 20th anniversary of the show’s historic night. To celebrate Kushner’s birthday on July 16, let’s flashback to that epic Emmys sweep.
The television adaptation followed just 10 years after the premiere of both plays on Broadway in 1993. Those original productions of “Millennium Approaches” and “Perestroika” nabbed seven Tony Awards combined, including two wins for Best Play, one for director George C. Wolfe, one for actor Ron Liebman as Roy Cohn,...

“Tuition-free” is becoming the new buzzword, as several of the world’s top drama schools plan to adopt that policy starting this fall, including the graduate programs at Juilliard and USC.
These join a number of existing free programs on The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual list of the best drama schools, as they look to expand accessibility and mitigate the debt many drama students bring into continuing education. It’s a big positive step in a year when many schools have been emerging from the pandemic era of largely online classes and leaning into more inclusive, tech-forward curriculums.
In addition to broadening access to more diverse candidates and wanting to stay competitive with recruitment, the push to go tuition-free at USC was spurred on by the writers and actors strikes. “Just knowing how volatile the industry is for these creatives, it’s extremely important that they not be saddled with...

“The Gray House” actors Mary-Louise Parker and Ben Vereen want people to wake up. Especially before the November election.
“I think they aren’t as horrified as they should be. We could potentially have a convicted felon as our President! There is a real lack of alarm,” Parker tells Variety at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival after the premiere of the Civil War series.
“Such ugliness was unleashed in our country by our previous President. It just spread, like some kind of virus. It gave people a sense of agency about their ignorance, their racism. It’s hard.”
“It’s frightening! People are not upset. There is a whole generation of ‘I don’t care,’” adds Vereen.
“There are scenes in this series that look just like the Jan. 6 [Capitol attack], don’t they. All of a sudden, it comes back into focus. You go: ‘Wow. It is happening again, now.’”

Morgan Freeman isn’t a fan of Black History Month.
“I detest it. The mere idea of it. You are going to give me the shortest month in a year? And you are going to celebrate ‘my’ history?! This whole idea makes my teeth itch. It’s not right,” he tells Variety.
“My history is American history. It’s the one thing in this world I am interested in, beyond making money, having a good time and getting enough sleep.”
Having exec produced Civil War series “The Gray House” alongside Lori McCreary through Revelations Entertainment, the past is very much on Freeman’s mind.
“If you don’t know your past, if you don’t remember it, you are bound to repeat it,” he says. During election year, this statement seems particularly poignant.
“Do you know this song? ‘To everything, there is a season.’ It really, really works in showbusiness.

The Monte-Carlo Television Festival has rolled out the blue carpet welcoming star guests for its 63rd edition, but it also has an eye on the future.
“We’re always working towards expanding and developing the festival. Each year, we get better and better,” executive director Cécile Menoni says.
Listing “fabulous highlights,” Menoni gushes over this year’s Crystal Nymph winner: Morgan Freeman. The award recognizes the “stellar body of work” of the veteran actor, who recently exec produced “The Gray House,” which celebrated its world premiere Friday at the opening ceremony. Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Amethyst Davis and Ben Vereen attended.
“It’s such a thrill for us to honor him,” Menoni says.
The fest will also take a closer look at rising stars, with “Bridgerton’s” Simone Ashley given the International Golden Nymph for most promising talent. Honorary Golden Nymph – “Our festival’s highest accolade” – will go to “true fan favorite” Olivier Marchal.
