While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

Saoirse Ronan is getting some of the best reviews of her career for “The Outrun,” an intense drama about a woman battling her addiction to alcohol. No surprise then that she ranks among the top 5 on our Best Actress chart. She also has a featured role in Steve McQueen‘s upcoming “Blitz” as a mother in search of her missing boy in war-torn London. Currently we have her on the cusp of reaping a bid in Best Supporting Actress as well. Expect Ronan to crack the top 5 after “Blitz” drops at the London Film Festival on Wednesday (Oct. 9).

On the eve of “Joker: Folie à Deux” opening in theaters on Friday, October 4, awards pundits everywhere are wondering about the film’s chances at upcoming kudos like the Oscars and Golden Globes. One of its strongest contenders is Lady Gaga, whose manipulative character Harleen “Lee” Quinzel sings and dances her way into Arthur “Joker” Fleck’s (Joaquin Phoenix) heart. Even though critics are divided over the sequel, there’s good news for Gaga: Gold Derby’s Golden Globe predictions have her reaping a bid for Best Supporting Actress.
As of this writing, Gaga enjoys odds of 13/1, which places her in the Top 6 for the category. Her closest competitors are currently Zoe Saldana (“Emilia Perez”) at 37/10 odds, Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”) at 9/2 odds, Selena Gomez (“Emilia Perez”) at 13/2 odds, Felicity Jones (“The Brutalist”) at 13/2 odds, and Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”) at 9/1 odds.

Love in Hollywood has often been found to be as tough as acting. While some turn out to be lucky enough to find their soulmates through onscreen chemistry that continues offscreen to result in a lifetime bond, others simply seem to hit it off in the beginning but fail to keep the spark alive.
Of course, a lot of onscreen chemistries have even led to marriages in Hollywood, with some of them lasting for decades while others couldn’t even make it up to a few years. Meanwhile, there is one other category of celebs as well: Those who just seem to find love again and again, considering just how many times and people they have decided to tie the knot with.
While not many names come under this last category, there are still some significant additions. From big names like Nicolas Cage, Pamela Anderson, Rita Hayworth, and even Martin Scorsese,...

At this point, Gold Derby’s ever-growing community of 2025 Oscars predictors are collectively not on board with the idea of four-time acting nominee Saoirse Ronan earning recognition for her work in “Blitz” or “The Outrun.” However, that could soon change given that, as of last weekend, she is no longer competing against herself for a Best Actress mention but rather vying for separate lead and supporting slots. In the few days since her “Blitz” performance was rebranded as featured, she has ascended to seventh place in that race and become a predicted dual nominee in the eyes of our editors and top 24 users.
Ronan’s apparently wise move – which has impacted the chances of supporting hopefuls like Lady Gaga (“Joker: Folie à Deux”) and Joan Chen (“Dìdi”) – coincides with the long-awaited confirmation that Natasha Lyonne (“His Three Daughters”) will be competing as her film’s sole lead. Although our odds...

Isabella Rossellini will be honoured during the upcoming European Film Awards with a career award celebrating her body of work as an actor and filmmaker.
The Italian model and movie star, who is the daughter of Swedish actor Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini, made her acting debut in 1979 in the Taviani brothers’ film “Il Prato” before breaking out internationally in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” in 1986, followed by prominent roles in films such as Taylor Hackford’s “White Nights,” Robert Zemeckis’s “Death Becomes Her,” and Peter Weir’s “Fearless,” to name a few.

Italian actress Isabella Rossellini will receive the European Achievement in World Cinema award, a lifetime achievement honor, at this year’s European Film Awards.
The Italian-American star, daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian film director Roberto Rossellini, was a successful fashion model — famously for French cosmetics brand Lancôme — before shifting into acting. Her first leading role came in the Taviani brothers’ drama The Meadow (1979), but her international breakout was David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986) in which she played the mysterious and tortured nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens. The performance, in which Rossellini also sang the film’s titular tune, won her the Independent Spirit Award for best female lead.
Over the next four decades, Rossellini carved out a unique career in cinema, moving between big-budget features — Robert Zemeckis’ Death Becomes Her (1992), Peter Weir’s Fearless (1993) — and independent auteur films, working with Peter Greenaway (2003’s The Tulse Luper Suitcases), Guy...

Edward Berger’s remake of All Quiet on the Western Front snuck up on the Oscar race to become an above-the-line contender, but the same won’t be true with his newest movie, Conclave. This Vatican-set thriller immediately stands out as one of the year’s finest films thanks to a pitch-perfect ensemble, a sharp script, and excellent execution.

Based on the novel by Robert Harris, Conclave follows the cardinals of the Catholic Church as they convene to elect one of their own as the new Pope following the passing of the current Holy Father. Although this may not seem like a particularly riveting premise for those who are not Catholic, this story is so full of intrigue, backstabbing, and twists and turns that it is not the movie you expect it to be.

The pic was previously dated on Nov. 1. Coming away from the fests, Conclave currently scored 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Not to mention, Conclave, will be going wide in 1,500 theaters in order to hook a broader audience access to the film on opening weekend as opposed to its earlier platform release plan. Conclave will be in about a third of the theaters than Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance that weekend, and will serve as the alternative to older skewing adults.
Conclave made its world premiere at Tellruide, followed by its International Premiere at TIFF. The pic is also scheduled to open the Mill Valley Film Festival on Oct. 3 and will celebrate its UK premiere at the London Film Festival on Oct.

Much like Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, director Max Minghella‘s Shell explores the hells of aging in Hollywood with vibrant style and biting wit. That both employ body horror, harken back to golden eras of the industry, and screened at TIFF will further draw inevitable comparisons. Yet they couldn’t be further removed in just about every way. While Shell centers around an aging actor who embarks on a risky beauty regimen in a desperate bid to retain relevancy, Minghella opts to use it as a vehicle to craft an escapist love letter to ’90s cinema.
Samantha Lake (Elisabeth Moss) never quite reached the career highs as her breakout lead role in a cloying family television during her youth. Even worse, she’s practically aged out of Hollywood. Toronto film festival: the actor leads a top-tier ensemble, including Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini, in an entertainingly juicy adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel
Like the easily devoured paperback it’s based on, pulpy papal thriller Conclave has a brisk, page-turning allure, filled with juicy intrigue and mystery, a beach read that would follow you back home after. We’ve become grimly accustomed to plot-heavy bestsellers such as this stretched out into indulgent 10-episode seasons of television (such as the recently misjudged re-adaptation of Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+), a baggy over-extension of stories that demand a tighter grip.
So it’s a mercy of sorts to see All Quiet on the Western Front’s Edward Berger transform Robert Harris’s “unputdownable” pot-boiler into a brisk, contained feature instead, a two-hour escape to the Vatican that knows exactly when to drop us in and take us out.

Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey are foundational works of Western literature, yet they are seldom adapted for the screen today. The Iliad was last made into a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster in 2004’s “Troy.” But you must go back to 1954 to find an equivalent for The Odyssey in “Ulysses” starring Kirk Douglas. Since then, The Odyssey has had some notable television adaptations: 1968’s Italian production “Odissea” (with Bekim Fehmiu and Irene Papas), 1997’s American production “The Odyssey” and 2013’s French production “Odysseus”.

After bursting into the mainstream with his Oscar-winning Netflix hit adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Edward Berger is back with “Conclave,” a tense political thriller premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. While not without its challenges like any other film, Berger said at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design that there was one big difference between “Conclave” and “Western Front”: this time he got to shoot in Rome.
“I definitely didn’t want to go to the mud again,” he admitted. “We went to the freezing cold for the first movie. I thought I owe my crew a nice location and go to Rome with them. So we spent the summer, the winter in Rome, which was lovely. It’s literally the best place to shoot.”

Exclusive: Though Conclave is fiction based on the Robert Harris novel, you cannot watch Edward Berger’s taut thriller about the election of a new pope without noticing the parallels to the polarizing politics of the race for the White House. The surprise twists and turns abound as it becomes clear the Vatican will either retreat into past conservative, exclusionary policies, or embrace Catholics who’ve been excluded by the institution. The German-born filmmaker is introducing his follow-up to the harrowing WWI drama All Quiet on the Western Front, which won four Oscars including Best International Film. This one-two punch also announces a major filmmaking talent, though he’s no overnight success. Whether he moves on to a major studio franchise like Ocean’s 14 or 007, it is clear from the confident hand in his visual storytelling that Berger is a filmmaker who can make the kind of impact in...

Is it safe to go back to the ocean? The slick, turn-of-the-millenium “Ocean’s” caper franchise still looks like it has some life in it. There’s talk of an “Ocean’s Fourteen” making the rounds, with the core of the original cast involved.
Apple TV+ is just a few weeks away from debuting their starriest movie yet, “Wolfs,” a crime comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt directed by “Spider-Man” maestro Jon Watts. Rumors that the two A-listers are also prepping “Ocean’s Fourteen” either deadens the impact of this reunion or gasses it up even further depending on your point of view. If “Wolfs” wasn’t a blast for them, you might think, there’s no way they wouldn’t want it.

Exclusive: This is a bit early, but The Dish hears momentum is building on the Smokehouse-produced next installment of the Warner Bros caper film franchise that started with Ocean’s Eleven. Sources said that George Clooney and Brad Pitt are coming back, and they are courting Edward Berger to take over directing duties.
Berger is emerging as an elite filmmaker. Isabella Rossellini wanted the “Death Becomes Her” set to be a shared experience, even if she wasn’t the one disrobing onscreen.
The actress told Variety that while she didn’t believe she was fit enough at the time to show off her rear end in one sequence of the film, which co-starred Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, Rossellini didn’t want her body double to feel abandoned at all.
“I went up to my double and I said, ‘I will stay here in my trailer. If you need me, just let me know and I’ll come out and be here with you,'” Rossellini said. “I was there like a mother saying, ‘I’m here to protect you.’”
Rossellini previously told Vulture that there was a “bodily nudity” to the scene in question.

Isabella Rossellini puts down her fork, straightens her back and shows me how she nailed a pivotal moment in her new movie, “Conclave,” a Vatican-set thriller that unfolds a world away from her 28-acre Long Island farm where we’re having lunch. In the scene, Rossellini’s character, a nun named Sister Agnes, is navigating a darkened hallway, trying to remain undetected, when she glimpses something mysterious unfolding a few feet in front of her.
“My heart has to beat much faster, so the camera picks it up,” Rossellini says. “Your breath has to translate that. So I …” And with this she inhales, drawing in oxygen as quietly as she can, filling the room with a sense of tension without saying a thing.
It turns out great screen acting is all about waiting to exhale.
In “Conclave,” Sister Agnes tends to the fraternity of cardinals gathered to choose the next pope.

The 51st edition of the Telluride Film Festival concluded on Labor Day, with three standout films generating significant Oscar buzz: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” and Jason Reitman’s dark comedy “Saturday Night.”
Distributed by Sony Pictures, “Saturday Night” marks Reitman’s return to both directing and screenwriting, collaborating with co-writer Gil Kenan. While the film takes a high-tension look at the 90 minutes leading up to the first episode of the iconic sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” it has received mixed reactions from critics. However, history has shown that critical reception does not always align with Oscar success, as evidenced by past Best Picture winners like “Green Book” (2018) and “Coda” (2021). The No. 1 rule of Oscar punditry is to remember critics are not Oscar voters.

Faith and religion tend to be internalized in such intangible and romantic terms that it is easy to overlook the inherent clash between the two. Where the former is a solitary and primal response to the mysteries of existence, the latter is an institutionalized, often political setup with rules and traditions devised for the masses.

The drama behind the election of a Pope has been done to various degrees of success by Hollywood before, notably 1968’s pulpy The Shoes of the Fisherman, and 2019’s wonderfully literate The Two Popes with Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins in an imagined story of the rise of the current Pope Francis and retiring Pope Benedict. But now with Conclave, adapted by Peter Straughan from the Robert Harris novel and directed by recent Oscar winner Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front), we have a papal election thriller that rivals anything a political party could dream up. To put it succinctly in literary terms, this one is a real page-turner. In pure cinematic terms it is a barn-burning thriller. A superbly crafted — in every respect — stunning dramatic achievement, this is the kind of well-regarded, praiseworthy adult drama that used to be a staple for studios but now is an increasingly rare bird.

Director Edward Berger, who made one of the best movies of 2022 with a vivid adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, shifts gears rewardingly to a movie set almost entirely inside the Vatican. Conclave, adapted from the popular novel by Robert Harris, demonstrates Berger’s versatility and also offers one of the best roles of his career to Ralph Fiennes, who is supported by an expert ensemble.
The recent Oscar-nominated movie The Two Popes also took us inside the Vatican to examine the true story of the ascension of Pope Francis (played by Jonathan Pryce). That was essentially a docudrama, whereas this film is pure fictional speculation about the behind-the-scenes machinations involved in choosing a new pope after the death of the previous pontiff. Fiennes plays the Dean of the College of Cardinals, who is charged with overseeing the election.
Screenwriter Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) keeps the story moving swiftly.

Steeped in centuries of tradition yet timely in its themes, Conclave offers viewers a fascinating glimpse into the complex world of papal elections. Adapted from Robert Harris’ novel, the film follows the College of Cardinals as they gather in solemn ritual to select a new leader for the global Catholic Church. Held within the iconic halls of the Vatican, the story plays out like a dramatic House of Cards, as an unexpected death sparks secret deal-making between the most powerful prelates on Earth.

Edward Berger surprised the industry last year with Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front,” an unexpected awards sensation that landed nine Oscar nominations at the 2023 ceremony and won four: Best International Feature, Best Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design. So perhaps the nerves Berger expressed while introducing the world premiere of his follow-up film, “Conclave,” at the Telluride Film Festival on Friday night should have been anticipated. After all, what are the chances that lightning strikes twice?
But based on the response inside the Werner Herzog Theater, maybe it will. “Conclave,” already a strong contender in the Gold Derby odds in these nascent days of the Oscars race, lived up to those lofty expectations and could land several nominations at next year’s Academy Awards.

If you think the American presidential election has been unpredictable, wait’ll you see how capricious things get at the Vatican when the cardinals assemble to choose a new pope in “Conclave.” Adapted from the Robert Harris novel by Edward Berger, who assumes a very different challenge after “All Quiet on the Western Front,” this thinking man’s thriller unfolds like a murder mystery behind the locked doors of the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where the College of Cardinals is cloistered, except no one suspects foul play in the previous pontiff’s death.
Still, intrigues abound as the papabili — those considered next in line for the job, played by such formidable actors as Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow — pull whatever levers they can to be elected. But “Conclave” obviously concurs with Plato’s adage, “Only those who do not seek power are qualified to hold it,” featuring a host...

Conclave, the German filmmaker Edward Berger’s follow-up to his Oscar-celebrated interpretation of All Quiet on the Western Front, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. And if my gut reaction to the film, and that of industry insiders with whom I consulted after it ended, are any indication, then an Oscar race that has heretofore looked awfully thin may well have found a new top-tier, across-the-board contender.
The film, which Peter Straughan adapted from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel about the aftermath of a pope’s sudden death and the chaotic succession process that followed it, is hard to describe. I suppose “dramatic thriller” is apt, although there are also moments of comedy and horror, with multiple crazy twists that should not be spoiled. Some are likening it to Dangerous Liaisons, others to the quirky films of Yorgos Lanthimos.

Exclusive: Focus Features’ Edward Berger directed papal drama, Conclave, is opening the 47th Mill Valley Film Festival on Thursday, October 3.
The Ralph Fiennes-starring feature, which delves into the enigmatic world of a papal conclave, is already set to make its international premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month; Deadline hears the pic will be making its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival that begins at the end of this week.
Conclave follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting a new Pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy and discovers a secret that could shake the very foundation of The Church.

Edward Berger’s papal drama Conclave is scheduled to hit UK cinemas in late November. More on the film below.
The trailer for Conclave, Edward Berger’s upcoming drama set in the Vatican, was released last month and we’re intrigued by its premise. Ralph Fiennes leads an impressive ensemble cast in this story about choosing the next Pope. As if that wasn’t dramatic enough, it seems that there’s a hint of conspiracy going on too.
When the trailer landed, we didn’t have a set release date for the film, but that has now been rectified. Conclave will officially hit UK screens on 29th November.
Here’s the trailer, to refresh your memory.
There’s not a whole more to this story. We simply wanted to let you know when the film is coming out, but to please the Seo lords, we’ll waffle on a bit longer.

Banel & Adama (Ramata-Toulaye Sy)
A directorial debut programmed into the main Cannes competition is typically viewed with suspicion, if not overlooked altogether. Very rare is that lightning-in-a-bottle moment like the arrival of Son of Saul some years back. Typically, the only conversation these debuts generate is the critical debate as to why they’ve been elevated to the top of the pile when there are far more striking debuts buried deeper within the festival. This often means that accomplished films are overlooked and underappreciated by those on the ground, who may be subconsciously comparing a striking feature to the work of more established names it’s competing against for the Palme d’Or, approaching each debut with a “show me” attitude it...
