Spend enough time charting the corners of any subgenre and you’ll quickly discover that not all entries are created equal. Due to the sexually charged nature of Erotic Thrillers, a common mistake that Hollywood suits make is believing that so long as there’s an adequate amount of sex and skin, the mechanics of the plot and the characters don’t matter.
What’s wild about Richard Rush’s 1994 film Color of Night is that it both does and does not fall into this trap. There is sex, yes, and it is ridiculous, but the carnal relations are condensed into a single part of the film, leaving long stretches of the thriller without its accompanying eroticism. And while there are a few murders, the thrills are also spread out and tend to be fleeting.
Which begs the question: without the sex and without the thrills, what becomes of an Erotic Thriller?...

Film director Richard Rush, perhaps best known for his unorthodox and original 1980 film The Stunt Man, passed away in Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, April 8, 2021 just one week shy of what would have been his 92nd birthday following years of health issues. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Claude (née Claude Cuveraux); his son, Anthony; and his grandson, Shayne.
Mr. Rush was born on Monday, April 15, 1929 in New York City and broke into the film industry through the UCLA film program and later worked for producer and director Roger Corman as the co-writer and director of Too Soon to Love (1960), alternatively titled High School Honeymoon, about high school sweethearts who go all the way and the girl ends up pregnant. This was heady subject matter for the time and Jack Nicholson has a small role in the film.

When Basic Instinct hit big, Hollywood went hunting for more erotic thrillers. Er, it found some. Includes Kevin Spacey with odd hair.
When a movie hits big out of the blue, it’s unwritten Hollywood law that the imitators aren’t too far behind. That’s why, after American Pie brought Porky’s-esque sex-tinged (late) teen comedies back to prominence in 1999, the box office was flooded with similar fare for years after. The Blair Witch Project, meanwhile, hit out of nowhere, and found footage horror is only now dying away. The late Wes Craven, meanwhile, wryly noted just how quickly Hollywood had cashed in on the success of 1996’s Scream, when spoof Scary Movie popped out the year after.

Going back to 1992, though, and it was the turn of the erotic thriller to enjoy its resurgence.

Nathaniel R's been revisiting (and ogling) past Lord of the Apes this summer. We've now reached the late 90s...
In our Swing Tarzan Swing series we've now reached the late 1990s. A time in which I, Greystoke-loving Nathaniel who is known to swing enthusiastically on the ropey vines of time between decades, am stunned into something approaching silence. I've sat on this one for over a week, struggling for something to say.
What possessed anyone involved to dive headfirst into a schlocky old school Tarzan plot/adventure while also incongruously connecting itself to the (comparatively) high-brow Greystoke? Early Tarzan films avoided England but for onscreen talking points or origin story allusions. After Greystoke Tarzan films must begin there, goes the apparently unspoken rule. So we first meet John Clayton (Casper Van Dien) as a rich heir happily immersed in all things Jane (Jane March) in England. As with the new 2016 Tarzan,...

Flim The Movie is a very clever, very funny mockumentary. It was a surprise hit at Raindance Film Festival 2014 and despite a low budget and miniscule marketing spend found itself nominated for a British Independent Film Award alongside big hitters like Calvary and The Imitation Game. The story centres around a hapless, wannabe Bollywood director called Ravi (played by Raffaello Degruttola). He claims to have made at least one short film back in India and has come to the UK to make his first feature film. Capturing this is the Nick Broomfield-cum-Louis Theroux documentarian Scott (played by Steven Waddington).
As well as star in it, Degruttola produced and directed it.

[Editors Note: Given that we've already reviewed the Vinegar Syndrome release of Graduation Day and both discs are virtually identical bar the extras, we thought we'd review the Major difference between the two Blu-ray releases - the bonus feature on the UK disc, the documentary Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed]
It’s fair to say I’m a sucker for scream queen “documentaries”. Be they the T&A filled features such as Scream Queen Hollywood Hot Tub Party, more amateur-hour productions such as Donald Farmer’s shot-on-video Invasion of the Scream Queens, or the awesome scream queen interviews that featured in Stephen King’s World of Horror – if it features an interview with a scream queen then I’m there. I’m also a fan of the documentaries and Blu-ray extras produced by High Rising Productions – including their previously released slasher movie documentary: Slice and Dice: The Slasher Movie Forever.
Put the two together and… I’m in filmic heaven!
Directed by UK-horror scene stalwart Calum Waddell and hosted by scream queen Debbie Rochon (Terror Firmer, Tromeo and Juliet) Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed features, in a change of pace for horror documentaries, especially those focusing on females in the genre,...

Released in 1981, Graduation Day has become a favourite of slasher movie fans thanks to its plasma-spurting set pieces, maniacal mystery-killer storyline and a cast of cult celebrities that includes Christopher George (City of the Living Dead), Vanna White (Wheel of Fortune) and the perennially topless Scream Queen Linnea Quigley. Now set for a Blu-ray release, with a stunning print restored and re-mastered from a colourful 4k scan, from the folks at 88 Films, Graduation Day will arrive in the UK with an array of newly created special features from High Rising Productions including a new feature length documentary entitled Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed.

Sex sells; there is absolutely no getting away from the fact that in every walk of life, a nice pair of breasts or a guy’s pert arse is going to sell whatever product they’re attached to, and more than anywhere else – other than porn, perhaps – that is true of movies.
Who isn’t going to enjoy a steamy sex scene in the middle of a movie? Sure, it might be gratuitous and completely pointless to the plot and/or the characters, but hey, it provides a nice break in the other action and gives us a bit of a thrill at the same time.
However, some movies have sold themselves on sex and come up short, as must be embarrassing for the owners of the bodies involved. After all, how much must it suck if you confidently flaunt your body on screen, and the box office tallies tell you,...

If there's one thing you can count on from "The Hangover Part III," it's that at some point in the film, Zach Galifianakis (and probably Ken Jeong, too) is gonna let it all hang out.
Now, while we respect such a display of uninhibited revelry, it doesn't mean that anybody — and we mean anybody — necessarily wanted to see such a thing. Let's face it (or, rather, let's not) — there are just some people who need to keep their junk in the trunk.
Speaking of which, here are nine nude scenes that made us wanna cover our eyes.
9. Philip Seymour Hoffman, 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' (2007)
The opening shot of director Sidney Lumet's last film shows Philip Seymour Hoffman energetically humping Marisa Tomei. Say what you will about the big guy, but he seems a more than capable lover ... not that we needed any visual proof of that.

When you think about 90s pop culture, you have to think about Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 erotic thriller, Basic Instinct. That movie dropped like a bomb, dominating the entertainment news cycle for months and inspiring years worth of parodies. Its success didn’t come because Michael Douglas’ cop character investigating a murder made for all that interesting a story, or because Verhoeven orchestrated the thing all that well either. It came almost solely because people were so shocked by the content. There were threesomes, ice pick murders, and, of course, there was that interrogation scene where you could catch the briefest glimpse of Sharon Stone’s vagina if you turned your head sideways and squinted. The 90s were more innocent times—before the near daily release of celebrity sex tapes—so this was intense stuff, and Basic Instinct made a mint off the scandal. Two years later, a sporadically working director named Richard Rush tried to cash in...

The Asylum is the studio behind such cheap rip-offs as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train." It's now back with "Jack the Giant Killer," which is a rip-off of Bryan Singer's upcoming "Jack the Giant Slayer." And today we have a trailer for the new movie, showing that it also borrows from Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim." Check it out below. Plot: A giant beanstalk brings Jack to a land in the clouds filled with snarling, evil beasts. When the creatures make their way to Earth, Jack must figure out how to get back down before they destroy his hometown and everyone in it. "Jack the Giant Killer" is directed by Mark Atkins (Sand Sharks), and stars Jane March (Color of Night) and Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire). It's set to be released on VOD and DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th, just eleven days after Singer's "Jack the Giant Slayer" hits theaters.

The Asylum’s Jack the Giant Killer likely won’t prompt legal action from Bryan Singer’s similarly titled blockbuster since it appears to be set in the early 20th century, the giants are dinosaur-like monsters, and I’m unaware of any version of “Jack & the Beanstalk” that includes a giant robot.
Jane March (Color of Night), Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire), and newcomer Jamie Atkins star in writer-director Mark Atkins’ (Sand Sharks) Jack the Giant Killer, coming to VOD/DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th. That’s 11 days after Jack the Giant Slayer beanstalks theaters worldwide.
So how is The Asylum version of this classic fairy tale different?

Curiously enough, even before the recent court ruling suspending the release of The Asylum's latest mockbuster, Age of the Hobbits, Redbox’s website has a listing for the film, slating it for Redbox rental on December 31st.
The “Coming Soon” listing shows the exact same artwork but with the title Clash of the Empires in lieu of Age of the Hobbits. Presumably, that Redbox release with the alternate title will also scrapped due to the court injunction, but as of the time I am writing this, Clash of the Empires is still being listed on Redbox’s website.

Martin Kemp, the famed actor/musician has turned his hand to horror, bringing us his impressive directorial debut Stalker. It’s not often that a woman stalks another woman in this genre and here Jane March, who found fame in The Lover, plays the part of a psychotic female to chilling perfection. In this interview Kemp talks about being a horror fan, why he prefers directing to acting and compares his experience in the Celebrity Big Brother House to The Thing.
You wrote the screenplay for Stalker, where did the inspiration for the story come from?
Jonathan Sothcott, the producer, came to me asking me to rewrite the seventies movie ‘The House On Straw Hill’, but after looking at it I decided to just take a seed from it and send it on to a different journey, but the basic principle is still there.

Kellan Lutz (photo), best known for playing Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies, and Resident Evil actress Spencer Locke, will star in the performance-capture 3D movie Tarzan, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale, and to be directed by Animals United’s producers / directors Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe. Needless to say, Lutz will bring Tarzan back to life, while Locke will play Jane. The screenplay was written by Klooss, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs‘ Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo, whose sole listed credit on the IMDb is Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments, currently in pre-production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it updates Burroughs’ story by having Tarzan’s parents killed in a plane crash, the CEO of Greystoke Energies as the film’s chief villain, and Jane as an environmentally conscious heroine. Come to think of it, the first "update" isn’t something really new: Boy’s...

★★☆☆☆ Spandeux Ballet star Martin Kemp's debut feature Stalker (2010) (not to be confused with the 1979 Andrey Tarkovskiy film of the same name) struggles to hide the inexperience of its director, yet his psychological thriller also demonstrates an understanding of his chosen genre by frequently doffing it's hat to Hammer horror and trademark Hitchcockian camera angles and shots selections.
Kemp's Stalker is touted as a thriller in the tradition of Single White Female (1992) and Misery (1990), and tells the tale of famous novelist Paula (Anna Brecon) struggling with writers-block, who retreats to the country to work on her new book having been menaced by a dark figure from her past. With a relatively familiar cast that includes Colin Salmon, Jane March and, most recognisably, Billy Murray, Stalker is an all-British affair that manages to at least retain audience interest until its conclusion, regardless of its predictable premise.

Downton Abbey graduate Jessica Brown Findlay reveals the debt she owes to Maggie Smith, and do we really need so many films released?
Lady Sybil heads south
Jessica Brown Findlay can't believe she's about to make her movie debut in Albatross. "I had no idea what would happen when I got a little part in Downton Abbey," she told me. "Now I'm acting with Maggie Smith and the show's winning Emmys and I'm on posters." The husky-voiced star, 22, plays a wild child in the film, and is Lady Sybil Crawley in Downton.
"Maggie Smith is just inspirational – she told me to always give them a version of the line how you really feel it should be delivered, then do it their way: invariably, they'll end up using your way because it'll be the one with the most conviction." Using this advice she has now flown off for two weeks in...

Oh, if only The Asylum actually was producing a movie called Snow White and the 2-Headed Shark. I would watch that in a heartbeat. But they do have a new dark fantasy retelling of Snow White in the works, and we have new artwork for 2-Headed Shark Attack.
When I saw that The Asylum had updated its website to announce a supernatural Snow White in the works, my very first thought was as to what must have brought this on. Then I remembered that one of the big movies for next summer is Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart as an extra pouty Snow White. The Asylum will be beating Universal to the punch by several months with a Valentine's Day DVD release of Grimm's Snow White.
When the King is killed by ferocious reptile beasts, his Queen takes control of the kingdom. She tries to kill her beautiful stepdaughter,...

Stalker
Stars: Anna Brecon, Jane March, Linda Hayden, Colin Salmon, Billy Murray, Jennifer Matter | Written and Directed by Martin Kemp
“Hey,” I thought as Stalker’s opening scene began; a sequence in which a young woman runs through some woods in the magic hour. “This looks just like that short film I made in media studies at sixth form!” A rather unfortunate indictment to be sure, but hey, I learnt a lot from media studies. Ha ha ha!
Stalker is a remake/reimagining/whatever of the 1976 video nasty Exposé, in which struggling author Paula Martin (Brecon) relocates to a spooky old house in the middle of nowhere with her Pa Linda (March) in order to write her new book, whereupon bad shit starts to go down as Paula battles her personal demons. It’s directed by Martin Kemp. The same Martin Kemp who was in Spandau Ballet and Eastenders. That guy.

It's that time of year when the vaults are prised open, the cinematic nightmares of the world are unleashed, and movie houses across the land compete to present the scariest horror-themed festival with the corniest name. Halloween festivals have been steadily multiplying, like marauding zombies or Tesco Metros, so here's a handy breakdown …

The other hot all-nighter tickets are the Electric's Vintage 80s Horror All-Nighter (31 Oct, Electric Cinema, W11) which has The Thing, Evil Dead II, Re-Animator and Poltergeist, washed down with Michael Jackson's Thriller. According to Sothcott, "The film has taken a year to get to the screen and has been a real labour of love for myself and [director] Martin Kemp, but Exposé is finally completed. For a low budget movie we had an amazing cast - a bona fide Hollywood star in the brilliant Jane March, a brilliant and versatile leading lady in Anna Brecon, and a really offbeat but superb turn from Billy Murray as a slippery journalist. And Martin directed them all with real skill, drawing out layered, subtle performances of the type you don't often get in this genre.

Not so much a romcom as a relcom: a "relationship comedy" of the sort I associate with the 1990s, the world of Friends and Ally McBeal on TV: loads of quirky observational material and wacky fantasy gags. It's based on Alain de Botton's 2001 novel, Essays in Love, and structured around the Hornbyesque idea of revisiting (in your mind, at least) all your old girlfriends to find out why you're so rubbish at love. Brendan Patricks plays Duncan, a guy who is nerdy and conceited, passive-aggressive and thoroughly annoying – though I suspect he is supposed to be pretty lovable. Miserable about the way his romantic life has turned out, Duncan takes us through the story of all his former amours, a string of rather gorgeous women, including Jane March and Naomie Harris. There are some nice insights,...

This glossy, soapy tale will inevitably trigger fond memories of the once controversial 1992 film The Lover, says Peter Bradshaw
This glossy, soapy tale will inevitably trigger fond memories of the once controversial 1992 film The Lover, starring Jane March and Tony Leung: a teenage girl has an affair with a worldly older man in 1920s French Indo-China. That was based on a Marguerite Duras novel - this is based on a different yet equally autobiographical book by Duras about the same period in the author's life, but with a new emphasis on Duras's mother, played with typically fierce impassivity by Isabelle Huppert. She has made an unwise investment in Cambodian farmland, which is continually flooded because of breaches in the overwhelmingly symbolic sea wall. A wealthy Chinese older man is infatuated with her young daughter Suzanne (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey), and a marriage would save their financial bacon, yet Suzanne's mother and brother (a smouldering,...

London -- Paramount Pictures International, the studio's overseas releasing arm, has wooed the U.K. rights to "My Last Five Girlfriends," a romantic comedy from British production label Willing Pilowsky Media.
Ppi said it plans to roll the Julian Kemp-directed movie in March next year.
The film took a bow at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and unspooled in the U.K. at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June.
It is the first production from Willing Pilowsky, a partnership between David Willing and Marion Pilowsky. L.A.-based Media 8 is handling international sales and will show the title during next month's American Film Market.
The film stars newcomer Brendan Patricks with Naomie Harris, Jane March and Cecile Cassel in the story of a man looking back at his former loves.
