Every day brings yet another voice asking the question, "Where have all the movie stars gone?" Well, if you ask this writer — me, I'm the writer — there are movie stars all around us if we just accept that they've got the goods and treat them as such. One of the youngest additions to the "movie star" canon as far as I'm concerned is Rachel Zegler, who has already proven herself to be a bonafide superstar with only a handful of film performances to her credit. Not to be parasocial or anything, but the internet is super weird about Rachel Zegler, so much so that I defended her during /Film's Hottest Movie Takes list. The reason being? I think she's one of the most promising young talents currently working today and if we really want to "bring back" movie stars, we need to foster that talent to want to continue being a part of Hollywood.

Triple threat celebrities can sing, dance and act, but the quadruple threat of an Egot winner, or someone who holds at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony, is another thing entirely.
Some have achieved non-competitive Egot status through honorary awards such as Barbara Streisand with her special Tony, Liza Minnelli with her Grammy Legend Award, James Earl Jones with his Academy Honorary Award, Harry Belafonte with his Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Quincy Jones and Frank Marshall.

Several names on this list have also earned various awards for producing certain works rather than starring in them, and many more are composers whose songs have gained acclaim to be awarded across the different categories.

Composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul just won their first Emmy Awards at Sunday night’s Creative Arts ceremony, making them the 20th and 21st people ever to achieve an Egot. They won in the Best Music and Lyrics category alongside Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for their catchy tune “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from “Only Murders in the Building.” They were up against song nominees from “Girls5eva,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “True Detective: Night Country.” Enjoy watching our interview with Pasek, Paul, Shaiman and Wittman from earlier this summer.

“The Piano Lesson” is a showcase for Samuel L. Jackson and Danielle Deadwyler. This upcoming Netflix flick is adapted from August Wilson’s 1987 Pulitzer Prize winner. The story is centered on the Charles family, who have to decide what to do with a great family heirloom — a piano. Jackson plays the patriarch, Doaker Charle, who acts as a storyteller in the play and recounts detailed stories about the piano’s history. And Deadwyler plays his niece Berniece, who is a strong advocate for keeping the piano.
Jackson has a long history with this piece. He originated the role of Boy Willie at the Yale Repertory Theater in 1987 and reaped a Tony bid for his performance as Doaker in the acclaimed 2022 Broadway revival directed by his wife, Latanya Richardson Jackson. John David Washington, who played Boy Willie in that production, reprises his role here, with his brother Malcolm Washington handling helming.

Fans of ABC’s Abbott Elementary were thrilled to hear that a season 4 episode will feature a crossover event. Social media users immediately put on their thinking caps and speculated as to who would be making an appearance in the halls of the downtrodden Philadelphia grade school. Knowing the show is aired on a network owned by Disney, you can expect it to be someone in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (here’s hoping Carmy or Syd from The Bear travel to Philly *fingers crossed*)
The TV crossover used to be a great way for networks to promote two shows at the same time, but as the streaming era took over the tendency to apply this advertising method has dwindled. The prank centers on Ben and Tanner, two seniors who cook up an elaborate scheme to get back at their brutal physics teacher, Mrs. Wheeler. When the no-nonsense educator fails the whole class due to one student’s cheating, the fed-up friends take revenge by planting false evidence online linking Wheeler to a missing student. Their lighthearted prank soon spirals out of control as the fake news spreads like wildfire.
Directed by Maureen Bharoocha and showcased at the SXSW Film Festival, the comedy/thriller promised subversive social commentary through its digitally-driven plot. Legendary actress Rita Moreno sinks her teeth into the villainous role of Wheeler, no doubt relishing the chance to play against type. However, while the setup suggested intriguing themes around student stress and the fog of online misinformation, the execution proves inconsistent.
An uneven tonal mix of satire and mystery, the narrative complicates matters further with each implausible twist.

“I am, for you graduates, the representation of the underachiever who has achieved,” Curtis continued. “I am an artist, I can say it to you today.

A little over a year after landing her first Oscar, and a month after earning her second-ever Emmy nomination for her role in The Bear, Jamie Lee Curtis can now add “doctor” to her long list of accomplishments.
The star was presented with an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by the American Film Institute at the film school’s class of 2024 commencement ceremony on Saturday. Halloween director John Carpenter was on hand to present her with the honor, noting, “We did Halloween, and it made all of us famous, but Jamie Lee especially. She became the queen of horror movies; I’m not sure she wanted that. I’ve watched Jamie’s career through the years and watched her grow as an actress, and finally, finally, she won an Academy Award — and rightfully so. She is an amazing talent.”

There were 14% fewer girls and women in leading roles in 2023 films compared to the previous year, a new study by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has found.
Their annual report, “Inequality in 1,700 Popular Films,” crunched representation stats for the 100 most popular films from 2007 to 2023 — tabulating for gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+ identity and disability.
Looking just at the top movies of 2023 — famously the year of “Barbie” — the study found that only 32% of speaking characters were girls or women and only 11% featured girls and women in at least 45% of all speaking roles.
“No matter how you examine the data, 2023 was not the ‘Year of the Woman.’ We continue to report the same trends for girls and women on screen, year in and year out,” Smith said in a Monday press statement.

We recently hosted a poll asking which TV legend should be the next person to receive the 2025 SAG life achievement award. The overwhelming top choice was Emmy and SAG winner Jean Smart. She received 31.84% of support among the 18 candidates we offered for consideration.
When we offered a similar poll last year, double Oscar winner Barbra Streisand was the top choice, and then she was indeed selected for this honor on the Screen Actors Guild Awards. We created a separate poll earlier this month about film legends with Meryl Streep receiving the most support over Glenn Close, Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange.
The SAG-AFTRA selection committee will likely be announcing their next recipient in the near future. The 2025 ceremony will be live February 23 streaming on Netflix.

Earlier this summer we had to endure the misbegotten Summer Camp which was yet another attempt by Diane Keaton, joined by Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard, to mix comedy and later-in-life drama in an older female bonding flick. Keaton had great success in the first film that announced this subgenre, 2018’s Book Club, which smartly matched four veteran actresses including Jane Fonda that led to a more mixed-results sequel set in Italy. Fonda also found real success in the subgenre with the entertaining 80 For Brady with Sally Field, Rita Moreno and Lily Tomlin along for the ride. Thus it seemed natural that other beloved female stars of a certain age would also want to jump on board in this game attempt to reverse Hollywood’s youth obsession and provide a little something-something for aging boomers everywhere.

Thirty-four performers across diverse backgrounds received Primetime Emmy nominations today which is even with last year when the Television Academy recognized the same number of nominees in the acting and reality hosting categories.
This year’s count remains above the 2019 low of 26 non-Caucasian actors and reality hosts, yet still far from 2021’s record 49 nominees.
The biggest gain this year was with indigenous performers with Under the Bridge‘s Lily Gladstone and True Detective: Night Country‘s Kali Reis both nominated in the category of Supporting Actress Limited Series, Anthology or Movie.
Also breaking through is Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai who landed a nom in Comedy Series Lead Actor. The Oji-Cree First Nations and Guyanese actor portrays Bear Smallhill on the FX series, which finally landed a Best Comedy Series nod after three years on the air; the show ultimately ending. The Four Seasons, a retread of the 1981 Universal movie of the same name, is a co-creation between Fey, her 30 Rock co-star Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Details about Forte’s character remain a mystery, though the cast list for Alan Alda’s 1981 comedy could provide some clues. In 1981’s The Four Seasons, three couples vacation together every season. After one couple divorces, feelings of betrayal and more spawn criticisms of one another, but the things that keep them together are stronger than those that might tear them apart. To date, there are 24 distinguished individuals (living and deceased) who have won competitive Oscar, Emmy and Tony Awards. The Triple Crown of Acting, as it’s known — see the list below. And there’s no horsing around.
Glenda Jackson became the most recent person to join the club when she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in for “Three Tall Women” in 2018.
While the recent 77th Tony Awards didn’t produce another Triple Crown Acting champion (there was no Tony-less Oscar and Emmy winner in contention), it is possible that some unsuspecting thespian was put on course to becoming the 25th name on the list above. And so the awards plot thickens.

I’ll appropriately start with Sarah Paulson, who accepted the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for “Appropriate.” (It marked her first Tony nomination.

‘Jim Henson Idea Man’: How Archival Footage and Family Anecdotes Helped Ron Howard Preserve a Legacy
When director Ron Howard was looking to tell Jim Henson’s story for his next documentary, he sat down with Henson’s surviving children for their permission to tell the story of the man behind “The Muppets.”
Not only did they give him their full approval and access to Henson’s archives, but they also appear in the documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man.”
The film combines archival material with talking head interviews with Rita Moreno, Jennifer Connelly, Henson’s children and longtime collaborator Frank Oz. There is plenty of archival footage that helps tell Henson’s story, and there’s a look at his 1965 Oscar-nominated short film “Time Piece.”
The main thread was the family story.
Speaking with Variety, Howard said after meeting Henson’s children, Lisa, Cheryl, Brian and Heather, he was fascinated by the stories they told about their upbringing. “I said, ‘Well, we can celebrate the characters we know.

Tom Brady may not be looking forward to getting roasted anytime soon – he’s worried about how the first one’s impacted his kids – but that does not mean that the football star does not see a bright future for himself onscreen. But does he really? Fans are convinced he can do more than a Hertz commercial, you know.
Tom Brady Chats Future With Fox And Teases Possible Onscreen Roles
In the seven time Superbowl champ’s latest interview with E! News, he opened up about that iconic roast that was all the buzz at the time it hit Netflix. Tom Brady getting roasted by teammates and friends, did anybody have that on their 2024 bingo card?
“My teammates really blew me away. I mean, they performed in an arena that’s entirely different than what they’ve had to in the past so they were all great,” he said of the experience.

"I lit the fuse, and now we watch Wheeler burn..." Uh oh! This sounds dangerous. Signature Ent. in the UK has revealed an official trailer for an indie dark comedy called The Prank, the second feature film directed by Maureen Bharoocha. This originally premiered back in 2022 at the SXSW Film Festival that year, and it also showed at the 2023 Santa Barbara Film Festival, but has never been released in the US. A bit strange. Ben and his slacker friend Tanner decide to play a prank on their high school physics teacher Mrs. Wheeler. When she fails the entire class after someone cheats on a test, they teach the demanding instructor a lesson by falsely accusing her of murder on social media. Of course, it ends up spinning wildly out of control. What will happen next? The film stars Egot winner Rita Moreno, with Connor Kalopsis, Ramona Young, Keith David, Kate Flannery,...
