Tom Cruise may be one of the greatest action heroes of this era, pleasing fans from all around the globe with his impeccable charms and incredible acting and stunting chops. But while he seems to have led a successful career spread over the course of many wonderful years, the actor also seems to have pissed off some of his peers while working with them.

One of these co-stars was none other than Bronson Pinchot, who seemed to have more than just found Cruise annoying while working with him. To say the least, he claimed the action legend pretty much ‘tormented’ everyone while working on their film Risky Business – so much so that when it all came back to Cruise, Pinchot was actually glad about it!

After years of dwelling in development hell, Eddie Murphy has finally returned to his iconic cop character, Axel Foley, in the new Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. When Murphy broke out with both 48 Hrs and the 1984 original, he became a powerhouse as a comedic actor with a penchant for crossing over into action. However, he was never quite fully seen as an action star like Bruce Willis was when he overshadowed his career in Moonlighting with the movie Die Hard. In the ’90s, Murphy tried to take a swing at a more serious tone with the action vehicle Metro from 1997. And we take a look at this less-talked-about film movie his filmography on this entry of Revisited.

Maybe Eddie Murphy will get the green light on his fifth turn as Axel Foley?
Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which premiered on Fourth of July Eve, racked up 41 million viewers in its debut, topping the streaming giant’s English Movies chart for the week of July 1. (Netflix properly measures as “view” as total minutes viewed divided by running time.)

There was little doubt that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F would enjoy quite the debut on Netflix, with the only question being just how well it would do. Well, Netflix announced today that the long-awaited sequel has debuted at the #1 spot on the English Films List with 41 million views, easily making it the most-watched title of the week.
The #2 spot was filled by the romantic comedy A Family Affair, starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron. It had 31.9 million views, nearly 10 million less than Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. I still think this film would have done great in theaters, but what can you do?
Now, what does this mean for another Beverly Hills Cop sequel? It likely confirms that Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were right to have already started brainstorming ideas. “They’re developing it,” Murphy said at last month’s world premiere. “If it comes together, we’ll be doing another one.

Axel Foley is back for another onscreen mission, and he brought another nostalgic figure we never thought we’d see again.
In celebration of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Netflix has teamed up with early aughts ringtone icon Crazy Frog for a music video that pits him against the titular detective reprised by Eddie Murphy.
The pairing might appear random, given that Crazy Frog was a Swedish CGI-animated Eurodance character created in 2003, nearly a decade after Beverly Hills Cop III was released in 1994. But the character created by Erik Wernquist noted in the description of the YouTube video that he and Axel F “have been an iconic duo since 2005.”
Crazy Frog previously released a cover of ‘Axel F’, the original 1984 movie’s electronic theme song by German musician Harold Faltermeyer, which reached the top of the charts across most of Europe in 2005. His latest video offers a whole new remix of the track.

Eddie Murphy’s career has had more ups and downs than an elevator, but his resurgence as a straight-to-streaming movie star in the past few years has given him the juice to revisit some of the biggest hits of his past. Three years ago, there was “Coming 2 America” on Prime Video. Now, 30 years after “Beverly Hills Cop III,” he’s back again with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” which is streaming on Netflix.
The fourth movie brings motor-mouthed Motor City cop Axel Foley back to La La Land to rescue his daughter, Jane (Taylour Paige), with his new partner, Beverly Hills detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who’s also Jane’s ex-boyfriend. Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot all reprise their long-ago roles, with Kevin Bacon joining the lineup as a police captain. “Axel F” isn’t going to win any Oscars, but it does deserve...

It's been nearly 30 years since we last saw Axel Foley, the wisecracking Detroit cop played by Eddie Murphy, bring his street smarts to the posh streets of Beverly Hills. Now Netflix has revived the beloved franchise with the new film 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,' reuniting Murphy with original cast members Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser.
This time around, Detective Foley heads back to Beverly Hills to save his estranged daughter and district attorney (played by Taylour Paige) from potential danger while investigating a murder. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Paige’s cop ex-boyfriend, who joins in the mayhem as Foley and his pals uncover a conspiracy involving drug cartels.
How does the film stack up against the other movies in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise? Not bad, according to early IMDb user voting. Two days after premiering on Netflix, the fourth film has 15K votes with a respectable 6.7 average IMDb rating. That rating puts it above previous sequels ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ (1987) at 6.5/10 stars and 134K votes, and 1994’s maligned ‘Beverly Hills Cop III,’ which sits at 5.5 with 90K votes. Unsurprisingly, the iconic original ‘Beverly Hills Cop’—directed by Martin Brest in 1984—has the highest score, with an impressive 7.4 rating with 209K votes.
If all this talk of Eddie Murphy and ‘80s buddy cop movies has you feeling nostalgic, IMDb spoke with the cast and crew of ’Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ to get their favorite films from the ‘80s and their must-see Murphy flicks. See what director Mark Molloy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and stars Kevin Bacon, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold shared with us in the 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' Cast and Creators Watchlist....

Although some younger audiences may not realize it, Eddie Murphy has been one of the biggest, most famous movie stars on the planet for more than 40 years. Part of the gap of knowledge for Gen Z might be the reality that Murphy stepped away from the limelight aside from a couple of notable titles that went straight to streaming over the last few years, such as the Amazon Original film "Coming 2 America," over the last decade. But Murphy is roaring back on screen this week with a vengeance by returning to one of his most recognizable and beloved characters in the new Netflix action comedy "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F." With his return to this now-40-year-old character in mind, it's worth looking at the whole "Beverly Hills Cop" series. The 1984 original is one of the seminal action comedies ever made, but how does the rest of the franchise hold up?...

Kevin Bacon and Eddie Murphy are both ’80s icons, but the pair never actually worked together until Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which Bacon said was a “bucket list” moment for him.
“[It’s a] bucket list thing to work with him. I don’t remember even having met him — I’m sure we probably did, but I don’t remember.” The actor plays Captain Cade Grant in the sequel, a police captain in the Beverly Hills Police Department.

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the long-awaited fourth film in Eddie Murphy’s action comedy franchise, is now streaming on Netflix. It’s a 1980s throwback that features the return of old cast members like Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Bronson Pinchot.
To help communicate the film’s nostalgic vibe, Netflix hired Benedict Coulter, the editor who made the original “Beverly Hills Cop” trailer, to cut a new trailer in the style of his ‘80s work.
The result is a fun, high-energy trailer with a remarkably different feeling than modern trailers. This one skips the “trailer starts now” teaser before the actual teaser and that ubiquitous bass drop sound effect in favor of narration (lifted from the late trailer narrator Don Lafontaine’s voiceover for “Beverly Hills Cop II”) and a familiar song playing just beneath the dialogue for the whole thing: the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” which also soundtracked the original trailer.

Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley to help celebrate the 4th of July holiday. He is returning to one of his most legendary roles in Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which is playing exclusively on Netflix. The previous entry in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop III, was released in 1994 and received mixed reviews. In the latest chapter of the Axel Foley saga, Detroit’s finest ditches the rickety rides of Wonder World to return to the streets of Beverly Hills after his daughter, Jane Saunders, is threatened.

Nostalgia — it Ain’T what it used to be. Right around the halfway mark of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, a.k.a. the fourth time out for Eddie Murphy’s streetwise detective, our man Axel strides to the front desk of a posh L.A. hotel. He’s rockin’ his usual Detroit-plainclothes-chic uniform of varsity jacket, T-shirt, jeans and white sneakers. Seeing Murphy, who looks better at 63 than most of us did at 33, in his old get-up is already enough of a time-machine nudge on its own. Now he...

It’s been over 30 years since Eddie Murphy’s intrepid Detroit detective, Axel Foley, last graced movie screens in Beverly Hills Cop III. A much-loved franchise from the 1980s, the films followed the fish-out-of-water Axel as he traded the gritty streets of Detroit for sun-drenched Southern California, blazing his own trail to solve crimes and throwing more than a few spanners in the works of the fancy Beverly Hills Police Department along the way.
Now in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy returns once again as the wisecracking yet dedicated cop, this time bringing his rebellious energy to help his estranged lawyer daughter Jane. When masked intruders dangle her from a parking structure, Axel jumps on a plane and dusts off the signature Lions windbreaker that made him an icon to find out who’s behind the threats. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will go down as one of the best legacy sequels because it walks the fine line between being nostalgic about the past and welcoming new fans to the franchise. It has some Easter eggs and references to the last three films, but the movie doesn’t linger on those moments too much because that might alienate viewers who are entering the franchise with this Netflix release. Now, those who watch and rewatch the first three Beverly Hills Cop movies on an annual basis will probably be aware of the callbacks and nods to the films. However, those who are just getting familiar with the series will probably be a little clueless. So, here’s a list to help them out.
Spoiler Alert

Plot: After an attempt on his daughter’s life and the disappearance of his friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) returns to Beverly Hills to do battle with a group of corrupt cops.
Review: Right off the bat, it’s clear that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F director Mark Molloy nailed the assignment. Eddie Murphy was only 23 when "Beverly Hills Cop" arrived in theaters in 1984, and the action comedy helped make him a superstar. Murphy's raw talent was already apparent thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live," a show he joined when he as 19. His feature debut in Walter Hill's 1982 flick "48 Hrs." took him even further, as did his follow-up movie, 1983's "Trading Places". But "Beverly Hills Cop," directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify that Murphy was the real deal; a bonafide movie star. It was a mega-hit, and almost immediately made trash-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley an iconic character. Murphy was so cool, so confident, so suave that he took the character to extreme heights, taking a high concept pitch — what if a tough city cop ended up in posh Beverly Hills? — and creating movie magic in the process. Like Eddie Murphy, Axel Foley was young, hip, and in-demand.

Driving into town in his beat-up Chevy Nova, Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) still cannot believe the sights of Beverly Hills. He looks with bewilderment at high-fashion stores, a man dressed like a rockstar, and a blonde in a Corvette who offers a playful wink despite her boyfriend in the adjoining seat. Foley ends the sequence with his infectious chuckle, out of place in Beverly Hills but not out of ideas.
When Foley returns 40 years later for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, he repeats the drive in yet another beat-up vehicle. He notices a new set of California absurdities, including a child shooting video for his Instagram modeling mother and a woman in full burka passing Tom Ford’s store. But nothing here shocks Foley these days. Nothing drives him to his classic chuckle. Instead he gives it all a knowing smile and drives on.

It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since Eddie Murphy first exploded onto the screen as one of his signature characters, Axel Foley, in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop. But even if that 22 year old is now 63, he is still on the beat and doesn’t miss a beat all these years later in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, almost seeming to have stopped time with this character who is just as funny, sharp and entertaining as ever.
The original was the top-grossing movie of its year and led to two sequels, one in 1987 and another in 1994. That’s right, we haven’t had an Axel fix for 30 years, though not for lack of trying; there were several scripts along the way, but none felt right to its star until finally bringing in producer Jerry Bruckheimer who (with late partner Don Simpson) made the first couple of films.

There are a few valid reasons to make a sequel four decades down the track from an action-comedy blockbuster that left an indelible pop-cultural imprint: 1. A smart script with a completely fresh take on a formulaic genre. 2. Writing that digs into the ways an iconic character known for his rule-breaking irreverence adjusts to the social shifts of a different century. 3. New technology that allows for more explosive thrills. 4. The nostalgia of audiences for whom the original holds enduringly fond memories. 5. Lil Nas X agrees to write and perform a song, spinning rap verses around synthmeister Harold Faltermeyer’s catchy theme tune.
Sauntering along 30 years after the third installment opened to scalding reviews and underwhelming grosses, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F justifies its existence only with points 4 and 5. Which will likely be enough to satisfy diehard fans. Directed with journeyman efficiency by first-timer Mark Molloy and written by a committee that...

Axel Foley is tired, man.
The veteran lawman literally says so not an hour into in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, when rather than slip into yet another colorful persona/accent to finagle himself a room at (yes, the) Beverly Palms Hotel, he stops himself mid-bit, lets out an exhausted sigh, and instead just opens his wallet.

If you are shocked by the rating we gave Netflix’s upcoming action-comedy sequel to the 40-year-old franchise Beverly Hills Cop franchise, then I am with you because I also went into watching this film with a lot of skepticism, but it kept winning me over again and again. Don’t misunderstand me when I say that this film isn’t that good if I watch it as a critique, but if you are a fan of this film franchise like I am, you can’t ask for a better sequel than this one.
Eddie Murphy returns to reprise the role of Axel Foley, which is certainly one of his most iconic roles ever, and thankfully, the film’s creators didn’t mess with him as they did with Indiana Jones in Dial of Destiny. Axel Foley is still a wise-cracking daredevil even if he is getting old,...

It’s incredibly easy to be cynical about legacy sequels after years of watching studios and streamers desperately try to squeeze every last drop of content from whatever IP they could lay their hands on, regardless of whether there’s any more story to be told or anyone interested in it being told. But watching Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, it’s incredibly hard to maintain that cynicism when Harold Faltermeyer’s iconic “Axel F” theme kicks into gear and the man it’s named for, Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), breaks out his megawatt grin.

A few weeks ago, something absolutely incredible happened. On behalf of JoBlo.com, I was invited to attend the world premiere of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F in Beverly Hills! While there, I got to interview the entire cast, including Eddie Murphy. To give this a little context, I was born in ’81, and I grew up idolizing Murphy and watching all of the Beverly Hills Cop movies over and over. And yes, I said All – even 3. So, being invited to the glamourous premiere was pretty heady stuff. Heck, when I was there, I even got to meet another childhood hero of mine, Bronson Pinchot, from Perfect Strangers.
I’ve already posted my Eddie Murphy interview (check it out here), but today, I’m getting to post a lot more. In the video above, you can see me interviewing the whole cast, but here are my thoughts on each of them.

When first-time feature filmmaker Mark Molloy got the — admittedly, quite wild — phone call from super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer about the possibility of directing the long-gestating fourth film in the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, he didn’t have to do much research. After all, the long-time commercial director was a fan of the Eddie Murphy comedy franchise from way back. Like, watching the original films on VHS on the family farm kinda way back.
There was, however, one piece of legwork he opted not to undertake: Watching the third, much-maligned film in the franchise. Based on how poorly “Beverly Hills Cop III” did when it was released in 1994 (including a franchise-worst box office take of $119 million and roundly negative reviews from critics and Murphy himself), Molloy was hardly the only hardcore Axel Foley fan who skipped the whole thing.

Axel Foley returning to Beverly Hills, an animated feature from former Studio Ghibli talent, a jaw-dropping doc about love-struck “rooftoppers” and final seasons from three big shows — a Spanish teen drama, a viking saga and Daniel Larusso’s last hurrah — are some of the highlights on Netflix in July.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Netflix’s high profile feature release for this month, arrives on July 3. The fourth installment in the Eddie Murphy-led action-comedy franchise, sees Detroit detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills, thirty years after his last visit. This time, Foley must team up with a new partner — played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt — when his daughter’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened. Franchise fans will be happy to see regulars Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot) make appearances and series newcomer Kevin Bacon is also part of the action as Captain Grant.

The box office is finally seeing signs of life — once again, animation saves Hollywood — but that doesn't mean there aren't still reasons to stay at home and watch things on streaming. With the summer ramping up, and movies like "Despicable Me 4," "Twisters," and "Deadpool & Wolverine" giving us hope that the theatrical experience will remain a popular choice in the next month, we feel slightly less bad about recommending things to watch from the comfort of home.
Indeed, after a couple of slower months, Netflix is gearing up for one big summer, releasing some very highly anticipated titles, some surprising sequels, and also adding some modern classics with timely ties to movies still in theaters. With so many titles releasing on streaming every month and so little effort done by these platforms in advertising their own product, we're here to tell you what you should prioritize on Netflix in July.

From ‘Old Town Road‘ to Beverly Hills Cop, it seems Lil Nas X is coming for all of the Village People’s jobs.
The Grammy Award winner released his latest track ‘Here We Go!‘ on Friday, a theme song for the upcoming Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which premieres Wednesday on the streaming platform.
His song features the instantly recognizable electronic riff from the original 1984 movie’s theme by Harold Faltermeyer. The soundtrack won a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Lil Nas X previously admitted that his first time hearing the Beverly Hills Cop theme was in a Family Guy episode as he sat down with Axel F stars Eddie Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige for an interview with Netflix.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Courtesy of Netflix © 2024. Thirty years after the last Beverly Hills Cop movie, Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley in a new film, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Rejoining Murphy for his new adventure are Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot, Judge Reinhold, and the original producer of Beverly Hills Cop, Jerry Bruckheimer. Bruckheimer feels that, even after all these years, the team has been able to recapture the magic of the original films, and he gives a lot of the credit for that to the franchise’s uniquely charismatic star. The premiere saw Levitt, Reiser, Pinchot and Bacon posing together on the red carpet, showcasing a range of styles that reflected both the nostalgic appeal and modern twist of the film.
Levitt sported a sleek, pinstriped suit with a slim black tie, embodying a classic Hollywood look. Reiser opted for a more casual ensemble, wearing a dark jacket and scarf that gave off an air of experienced nonchalance.
Pinchot made a bold fashion statement with a vibrant, floral-patterned jacket in shades of purple and pink, standing out among his co-stars and undoubtedly catching the eyes of photographers. While Bacon, dressed smartly in a navy blue suit jacket,...

It’s been nearly fifteen years since the release of Shrek: Forever After, but there have been rumblings of a fifth installment of the main franchise for some time. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri revealed last year that they were hoping to get the band back together for Shrek 5, but Eddie Murphy dropped a bombshell while speaking with Collider, saying that he’s already been in the recording booth for the new movie. He also revealed that Donkey will be getting his own standalone movie, which will be released after Shrek 5.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” Murphy said. “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek,...

Just two weeks out from the release of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix, Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are already thinking about Beverly Hills Cop 5.
“They’re developing it,” Murphy told Variety at the recent world premiere of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. “If it comes together, we’ll be doing another one.” Bruckheimer confirmed the news, adding, “We have a couple of stories in mind.” It sounds as though everyone is onboard for another installment, but it will all come down to how this long-awaited fourth movie is received. Eddie Murphy remembers quite clearly why, back in 1984 when he was just 23 years old, he didn’t think the first “Beverly Hills Cop” was going to be a success. It all went down at the film’s first industry screening.
“It didn’t go well,” the funnyman told me Thursday at the, yes, Beverly Hills premiere of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the fourth installment of the action comedy franchise. “A lot of times at industry screenings they don’t laugh. I thought the movie was going to be horrible. I was with [Murphy’s ‘Trading Places’ director] John Landis and he was like, ‘No, it was great.’ I thought they hated it. Then I went and saw it with a real audience and then I saw the real reaction to it. But the very first time it was scary.”

Thirty years after Beverly Hills Cop III and 40 years after the franchise made its debut, Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton are back for a fourth film.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Murphy’s Detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills after his daughter’s (played by Taylour Paige) life is threatened, teaming up with her ex-boyfriend (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his old pals John Taggart (Ashton) and Billy Rosewood (Reinhold).
A fourth film has been in development on and off for decades, but it was never the right script. Reinhold said that when Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first two films, got involved, he felt like the movie may actually happen this time.
“We wanted to use the first one as a template, to be so lucky to reach that level, so that’s what we were after,” Reinhold told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Beverly Hills premiere on Thursday.

The latest installment of Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, doesn’t come to Netflix until July 3. Still, Murphy is already discussing the possibility of a Beverly Hills Cop 5. Speaking with Today about Axel Foley’s return to screens, Murphy said he’s not opposed to playing the character again if the story is there.
When asked about playing the wise-cracking, case-solving Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop 5, Eddie Murphy said, “I hope so because this movie turned out so good, especially if you grew up watching the movie, then you’ll really, really love this new picture.”
Speaking about Axel Foley’s appeal, Murphy says the trick to his lasting popularity is that he has something for everyone to relate to. “Axel is the everyman. He’s not a superhero or super cop. He’s the everyman that rises to the occasion.

Eddie Murphy apparently had his work cut out for him with his new onscreen daughter.
The actor’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F co-star Taylour Paige revealed her favorite part about working with Murphy on the long-overdue followup to his action comedy trilogy that all began in 1984.
“I grew up watching The Nutty Professor and Dr. Dolittle. It was like I knew him — it was surreal,” she told Empire of working with the Saturday Night Live alum.
“The objective was to try and get the man who made the world laugh to laugh,” added Paige. “I found it quite fun to crack him.”
She explained that her goal was to keep things light on the set of the comedy. “The world often feels like it’s in a chronic coma,” Paige said. “And without being too grandiose, I want to be a part of something which helps people to snap out of it.
