Although the original run of "Twin Peaks" only lasted two seasons (and a box-office flop of a prequel movie), it did manage to have a massive impact on the TV shows that would come after. It's easy to see the influence of the show's surreal bent in all of Tony's dream sequences in "The Sopranos," just as it's easy to see traces of the red room in the afterlife-hotel Kevin goes to in "The Leftovers."
The show it had the clearest influence on, of course, is "Lost." Like "Twin Peaks," the 2000s show about a mysterious island was a breakout hit from day one, and then immediately started frustrating fans with the apparent lack of pay-off to any of its big mysteries. Fans of "Lost" wanted to know more about those voices in the woods, or what the mysterious monster was up to, or who exactly the Others were. (The answer?...

If you’re like me and caught up with Twin Peaks well after its original run on ABC in 1990-1991, you probably got the same advice I heard. “Season one is great and season two sucks. But you need to stick through the second season to get to the finale which is the best episode of the entire show.” Leaving aside the fact that they probably mean “everything after the Laura Palmer murder is solved” sucks, since we got some great episodes in the second season, that advice offers a pretty limited understanding of what the original series had to offer.
Yes, Twin Peaks is most famous for its surreal imagery. Agent Cooper’s visit to the Red Room, Bob crawling over the sofa toward the camera, the Giant’s despairing observation that “It is happening again.” All of these are indelible parts of the series.

“Is It future? Or is it past?”
When the One-Armed Man Mike (Al Strobel) posed that question to Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in the second part of Twin Peaks: The Return, he may very well have been echoing the thoughts of the viewers. After all, Mike asked that question while sitting in the Red Room, the interdimensional waiting room that became the signature location during the original two-season run of Twin Peaks, and the 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. In fact, Cooper wore the exact same suit and tie combo, and sat in the same chair from the original series.
Before Cooper could answer, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) entered the room, decked in the same black dress that she wore in the season two finale. Although MacLachlan and Lee had both clearly aged in the two and...

"Twin Peaks" first aired in 1990 and became an instant hit, even as network executives weren't really sure what to make of the show. According to series co-creator Mark Frost, the people running ABC were baffled by the pilot episode and were reluctant to air it — that is, until test audiences responded way more positively than they expected. "It blew away their expectations, and Bob [Iger] recognized we had something different," Frost told Yahoo Entertainment.
One of the things that made "Twin Peaks" so memorable was its many strange, dreamlike, ambiguous scenes. Serving as the inspiration for later hits like "Lost," "The Leftovers," and...

Guillermo del Toro will be back in theaters later this year with “Nightmare Alley,” and he’s already at work on his follow-up project with his Netflix-backed stop-motion “Pinocchio” movie. But as much as del Toro fans look forward to his new releases, they also reflect obsessively on the dozens of films the director planned but never got to make. The director revealed on social media this week that he’s written “about 20 screenplays” that have not been shot (via ScreenCrush), which equates to well over a decade of work gone unseen.
“By my count I have written or co-written around 33 screenplay features. Two to three made by others, 11 made by me (Pinocchio in progress) so- about 20 screenplays not filmed. Each takes 6-10 months of work, so, roughly 16 years gone. Just experience and skill improvement.”
The list of del Toro’s unmade film scripts include the following titles: “The Witches,...

“Twin Peaks” fans have a new documentary to look forward to thanks to “Blonde, Beautiful, and Dead: The Murder Mystery That Inspired Twin Peaks.” Production company Metabook Entertainment confirmed to MovieMaker magazine this week that an imprint of Amazon Publishing has picked up the rights to the upcoming non-fiction book of the same name and has plans to adapt the project into a documentary. Both the book and the documentary will cover the murder of Hazel Drew, a young woman who died in Sand Lake, New York during the summer of 1908.
Per a statement from Metabook Entertainment, “Blonde, Beautiful, and Dead” will “investigate the secrets, corruption, and gender politics one small town community tried to keep buried” amid the Hazel Drew murder scandal. The book comes from authors David Bushman and Mark Givens and is eyeing a 2021 release date. Mark Frost, who co-created “Twin Peaks” with David Lynch, used the...

The third season of Twin Peaks was some of the greatest television I’ve ever seen. Arriving 26 years after season 2 wrapped up, David Lynch and Mark Frost’s TV comeback smashed all expectations, continuing the story started so long ago while taking us in some intense and crazy new directions. The season ended on an appropriately enigmatic tone as well, with Agent Dale Cooper apparently trapped in the past with an alternate version of Laura Palmer.
Since that third season won a ton of awards (Cahiers du cinema even named it as their “film of the year”), there’s been talk of a fourth run and now, star Kyle MacLachlan has said he’d drop everything to work on the show again. In an interview with ComicBook.com, he explained the following:
“I think, first and foremost, this is the Twin Peaks that David Lynch wanted to make and that makes me incredibly happy for him.

Back before “Twin Peaks: The Return” was announced, the idea of another season of co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost’s mystery thriller series was thought to be a longshot. But yet, ‘The Return’ arrived 25 years after ‘Fire Walk With Me’ (the ‘Twin Peaks’ prequel film) and was immediately embraced by fans, and eventually would go on to be considered one of the best pieces of film/TV over the past decade.

“Twin Peaks” is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its debut this month, which has led many fans to question whether or not creators David Lynch and Mark Frost will ever bring back the iconic franchise. “Twin Peaks” signed off in September 2017 with the finale of “The Return.” Lynch has made no announcements regarding a continuation of the series with a potential fourth season, but Frost doesn’t appear to be permanently closing the door on the show. In an April interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Frost said it wouldn’t be right to proclaim with certainty the series is finished.
“[‘The Return’] felt the right place to end it, given that Cooper had kind of defied the rules to try to undo a terrible wrong, but ended up paying a terrible price himself,” Frost said. “In terms of making more ‘Twin Peaks,’ I never say never. Who would have expected us...

“Twin Peaks” fans are abuzz over internet rumors that David Lynch is working on a secret follow-up to the Showtime limited series “Twin Peaks: The Return.”
As Av Club writer Britt Hayes reported in her own deep dive into the new “Twin Peaks” talk, the buzz started after the official Twitter account for the Hollywood Horror Museum posted a message stating, “Someone we know who is ‘in the know’ just let something very interesting slip about the future of ‘Twin Peaks.’ If it’s true, we’ll be squealing and giddy in 2020!” David Lynch’s daughter Jennifer is a board member of the museum, which is why the tweet gained traction online with “Twin Peaks” fans.
The museum’s post was followed by additional social media messages from “Twin Peaks” cast members Michael Horse (Deputy Hawk), who posted a photograph of his character being told to stay quiet, and Kyle MacLachlan.

According to our sources – the same ones who told us Ewan McGregor was returning as Obi-Wan, and that the leads of Ghostbusters 3 would be young teens – Showtime is looking to bring back Agent Cooper and the cult classic horror drama Twin Peaks for at least one more season. Of course, it’s expected that David Lynch would return to helm the project as well, along with the majority of the main cast. Though details are still currently being ironed out, the fourth chapter of the acclaimed series would likely premiere in 2020.

As leggy and lithesome flower girl and undercover cop Julie Barnes on ABC’s “The Mod Squad,” Peggy Lipton, who is dead on age 72 from cancer on May 11, became a counter-cultural sex symbol alongside actors Michael Cole as long-haired Pete Cochran and Clarence Williams III as African-American Lincoln Hayes. The catchphrase for the series that lasted five seasons from 1968 to 1973, “One black, one white, one blonde,” might sound corny these days, but it was one of the first network shows to feature an integrated cast that also reflected the times were a-changing by tackling cases with social issues and using the cool jargon of the day.
Check out the clip above featuring a “Mod Squad” scene between Cole and Lipton.
As often was the case back in the ’60s, Lipton would cash in on her TV popularity by recording a self-titled album in 1968, tackling such tunes as Donovan‘s “Wear...

It’s not happening again. Despite the original series winning two Emmys and landing a slew of high-profile nominations, “Twin Peaks: The Return” couldn’t make a successful comeback to the Emmys in 2018.
At the Creative Arts Emmys, held September 8 and September 9, David Lynch’s limited series lost the first seven awards it could win. Nominated for production design, sound editing, sound mixing, cinematography, makeup, editing, and hairstyling, “Twin Peaks” lost to the likes of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Genius: Picasso,” and “Black Mirror: USS Callister.”
That left two chances to win Monday night at the Primetime Emmy Awards: Lynch and Mark Frost was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special and Lynch was up for Outstanding Directing in the same field. Charlie Brooker took home the writing award for “Black Mirror: USS Callister,” and Ryan Murphy beat David Lynch for directing honors.

“Twin Peaks: The Return” should be a shoe-in for numerous Emmy nominations given it was one of 2017’s best reviewed pieces of entertainment, but David Lynch’s polarizing style means the show isn’t the lock it should be this year. IndieWire’s Emmy expert Ben Travers has the series listed as a major contender for nominations in races like Outstanding Limited Series, Actor in a Limited Series (Kyle MacLachlan), and Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), but every “Twin Peaks” fan knows three nominations won’t cut it — nor is anything a guarantee.
In this year’s acting races for limited series, Showtime is throwing its weight behind MacLachlan and Dern and launching campaigns for actors such as Naomi Watts and David Lynch, among others. However, “The Return” is filled with so many memorable actors giving some of the best performances of their careers that Emmy voters ought to look below...

More than perhaps any other show, David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” would seem like the sharpest ice pick chipping away at the concept that TV, by its very nature, is a writer’s medium. Beyond the director’s distinct visual approach and masterful sound design being responsible for delivering so much of the emotion, dread, and atmosphere of “Twin Peaks,” the narrative itself can, at times, feel obtuse as it doesn’t easily piece together in the way we’ve become accustomed to with serialized TV.
Yet it’s a mistake to assume that Lynch and co-writer/co-creator Mark Frost’s 500-plus-page script for the third season was simply the canvas on which Lynch painted. For four-and-a-half years the two longtime collaborators painstakingly wrote 18 new episodes that balance the continuation of all the old characters’ storylines, while exploring a vast and layered world that flowed from the first...

Refresh for updates… Roseanne Barr’s noxious, racist tweet likening former Barack Obama aide Valerie Jarrett to a Planet of the Apes character has drawn quick condemnation from Hollywood, including from her ex-husband Tom Arnold, while former Fox News host Eric Bolling tweeted — then deleted — that the Roseanne star owed no apology.
Arnold, replying to a post by CNN’s Brian Stelter, called Barr’s tweets “dangerous” (see all tweets below), while MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough tweeted: “There is no apology she can make that justifies @ABC turning a blind eye to this bigotry by airing another second of her show. Emmy voters returned to the strange world of “Twin Peaks” recently with an Emmy Fyc event for Showtime’s revival, “The Return.” Gold Derby was on-hand at Paramount Studios for the Q&A with director David Lynch and stars Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern, which followed a screening of the finale. Listen to the entire 47-minute Q&A above.

A great sense of mystery surrounded “The Return,” which picks up 25 years after the original series left off. Details were kept tightly under wraps, especially the shocking conclusion. “I was thrilled at the ending,” revealed MacLachlan, who reprised his iconic role as Dale Cooper, an FBI Agent investigating the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in a small Pacific Northwestern town (he also managed to play...

The “Roseanne” revival has made headlines for two main reasons: its incredibly high ratings and the fact that its title character is a Donald Trump supporter. The show’s success has also drawn scrutiny to Roseanne Barr herself, who likewise counts herself among Trump’s fans — and whose online activities have proven highly controversial.
Barr recently deleted a number of attention-grabbing tweets, one of which falsely accuses David Hogg — a survivor of last month’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida who has since become an anti-gun activist — of performing a Nazi salute. (That particular accusation is ironic, given that Barr has also come under fire for a photoshoot in which she herself dressed as a Nazi and posed with burnt “Jew cookies” fresh from the oven.)
Among those who’ve called Barr out are “The Big Sick” co-writer/star Kumail Nanjiani, “Twin Peaks” co-creator Mark Frost, and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Chelsea Peretti.

After 26 years off the air the groundbreaking 1990-1991 drama series “Twin Peaks” was revived by Showtime in 2017 for a special 18-episode limited series, “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Series creators Mark Frost and David Lynch wrote every episode, and Lynch directed every episode. That could give the series a crucial advantage in both the writing and directing races at the Emmys, provided the TV academy allows the revival to compete as a limited series and not as a drama series as it was previously classified.
The Emmys work differently if you’re a limited series. In the drama categories writers and directors submit individual episodes for consideration. The same is true in the movie/limited series categories — unless you’re credited with the entire series. That means Lynch and Frost could submit all 18 episodes as a whole for writing, and Lynch could submit all 18 for directing, which could boost their Emmy chances for a few reasons.

Robin Williams was set to star in a follow-up to his breakthrough hit, Good Morning Vietnam. And it was fully written, too...
The 1987 comedy-drama Good Morning, Vietnam was a very unconventional hit movie. A war film, and a hugely comedic one, it remains most remembered, not unfairly, for being the breakout movie role for Robin Williams, seizing his moment and his day with incredible impact.
Williams, by this stage of his career, was already hugely popular on television, courtesy of Mork & Mindy. But the genesis of the movie that would ignite his film career actually lay back to even before then, in 1979. That’s when the real-life Adrian Cronauer, on whose story the film is based, pitched a sitcom based around his experiences as DJ in the Vietnam War. It got the interest of agent Larry Brezner, who bought an option on the story. But television networks...

*Updated with video of del Toro's speech.* For decades he's given a spotlight to misunderstood monsters and outcast characters in his films, and at the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, Guillermo del Toro finally got to step into his own well-deserved spotlight when he won the award for Best Director of a Motion Picture for his work behind the camera on his latest film, The Shape of Water.
Selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in a nomination class that included Martin McDonagh, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, and Steven Spielberg, del Toro took the stage at The Beverly Hilton for an emotional speech after his name was announced for Best Director.
In addition to thanking his core cast—many of whom were sitting with him the moment his name was called—del Toro discussed how his love of monsters has saved his life several times over the years,...

Kyle MacLachlanis having a full-circle moment.
The 58-year-old actor received his second Golden Globe nomination for his reprisal of Agent Dale Cooper in Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival, nearly three decades after winning the award for the character in 1991.
“It is a little unreal,” MacLachlan told Et on Monday morning after the nominations were announced. “It really points to the power of Cooper and how he resonates with so many people. Also, the fact that [creators] David Lynch and Mark Frost were able to write something so compelling -- not necessarily a nostalgic revisit of something we had seen before -- but an entirely new story with the same characters, that they were able to make it as extraordinary as they are.”
In the 18-part series, also known as Twin Peaks: The Return, MacLachlan found himself portraying three vastly different characters (the evil Mr. C, Dale Cooper and Dougie Jones), providing him the unique and rare opportunity...

The best in 2017 polls and lists continue today with one of the most respected organizations, Sight & Sound. After polling over 180 critics from around the world, Jordan Peele’s Get Out landed in the top spot while close behind, with some controversy, is David Lynch and Mark Frost’s 18-part Showtime series Twin Peaks (which, fittingly, arrives on Blu-ray today).
Although the man who directed every episode has insisted his monumental undertaking is a film from the beginning, we imagine some may not agree with the distinction. Yet, three-plus decades later, many would classify Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 14-part, 931-minute miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz as a film, so perhaps we just need some more distance.
The excellent list also features Call Me by Your Name, Good Time, A Ghost Story, mother!, and Personal Shopper, as well as a handful of stellar 2018 U.S. releases (Zama, Western, You Were Never Really Here) and some 2016 U.

“Twin Peaks” is relying on Laura Palmer to help it face off in this year’s Golden Globes race.
IndieWire has managed to secure the Showtime show’s “For Your Consideration” mailer for Hollywood Foreign Press Association members, and it’s definitely a must-see collectible for any fan of the David Lynch revival.
Because “Twin Peaks” aired during the summer, it wasn’t eligible for this past September’s Emmys — which means this represents the revival’s first shot at awards consideration. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which character(s) on a TV show that aired in 2017 deserves their own spinoff?

I would be down for a show built around Laura Dern’s one-episode role on “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” as Wendy Hebert, the flaky “mystery bitch” who wanted to marry Rev. Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm). Mostly because Dern is the absolute shit and she should be doing more comedy. And secondly because this could be, as the theme song says, a fascinating transition from the lightly touched-upon trauma Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) endured at her kidnapper’s hand to a darker comedic exploration into the...

Hear the words “Twin Peaks” and a few names immediately come to mind: David Lynch, Mark Frost, Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Cera, etc. Less mentioned is executive producer Sabrina S. Sutherland, a longtime Lynch associate whose presence and input was no less an absolute necessity in the series’ conception, creation, completion, and, now, home-video release. Charting the show’s production — inasmuch as one can get access to what, even after its completion, remains a secretive process — will make clear that, when all’s said and done, she’s perhaps second only to the beloved auteur as an authority.
It was thus my great pleasure to speak with her at this year’s Camerimage International Film Festival, where I also managed to see the two-hour premiere and attend an hour-long Q & A with Lynch. Making its debut in April of 1990, Twin Peaks arrived on ABC’s doorstep as a kind of Trojan horse, infiltrating the network disguised as a weekly melodrama while hiding its arthouse inclinations behind a Peyton Place exterior. A supernatural soap opera governed by doppelgängers, time travelers and the transmigration of souls, director David Lynch’s effort was a short-lived sensation but has since enjoyed its own reincarnations in a feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and the Showtime series, Twin Peaks: The Return.

To ask the creators of “Twin Peaks” specific questions about what actually happens in the enigmatic series is often to set oneself up for disappointment, but Mark Frost has always been more forthcoming than David Lynch. That trend continued in his reddit Ama held earlier today, which touched on everything from the Experiment to Bobby and Shelly. Here are some highlights:

When asked about Bobby and Shelly, Frost said that the former couple “raised Rebecca together but slowly grew apart, as young couples often do. Amicable divorce, shared custody. Shelly’s weakness for ‘bad boys’ never went away, but infidelity was not the root cause for their breakup. Warrants have been issued, but Red, as of this writing, is still on the loose.”

The return to Twin Peaks did not begin with this summer’s third, possibly final season of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s medium-shaking television project — despite what almost everything, from general public perception to the kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really subtitle, would have you believe — but through last year’s The Secret History of Twin Peaks, a visually dense, textually opaque epistolary novel penned by Frost. Though initially perplexing in scope (it begins with Lewis and Clark, folds the likes of Richard Nixon and L. Rob Hubbard into the Peaks mythos, and only hits the original series’ events at book’s end), it proved a more-or-less-perfect tee-up: plenty was said, seemingly nothing revealed — perhaps the most notable exception being the existence of Agent Tamara Preston, played in the new series by Chrysta Bell — and its tethers to events we’d eventually follow (or at least observe) week after week proved, in hindsight, rather deep.
