The Gotham Awards have named the first filmmaker to be honored at the 2024 ceremony: Denis Villeneuve.
This year’s ceremony, which will take place on Monday, December 2, will toast the “Dune: Part Two” auteur with the Gotham Director Tribute.
Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel film starred Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya and was released in March 2024. The feature was the sequel to Villeneuve’s 2021 Oscar-winning “Dune,” which was adapted from the first half of Frank Herbert’s beloved novel of the same name.
In addition to the expanding “Dune” franchise, French-Canadian filmmaker Villeneuve has previously directed “Blade Runner 2049” (2017), “Arrival” (2016), and “Sicario” (2015), among other features. The Gotham also has a tie to one of Villeneuve’s early films, “Incendies” (2010), which the organization supported through the IFP Week Program.

Monday’s Season 26 premiere of The Voice did many things. It introduced nine singers who will be vying for the title. It offered Michael Bublé a seat on the coaching panel. It returned Gwen Stefani and Reba McEntire to theirs. But let’s be real. The most important thing that it did was install Snoop Dogg as a coach. And he is, in short, a [bleeping] gift, alternately shrewd and sensitive and, as if we had any doubt that he would be, delightfully funny. “My jaws are hurting,” Reba exclaimed at one point, “I’ve laughed so much.” Read on, and...

Continuing Denzel Washington’s stated quest to bring new film versions of iconic playwright August Wilson’s 10-play Century Cycle (aka Pittsburgh Cycle since nearly all take place in the writer’s hometown), he has now come in as producer (with Todd Black) of one of Wilson’s most celebrated works, the 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning The Piano Lesson, previously made as a TV movie in 1995 and in 2022 the subject of a major Broadway revival. Finding success with his 2016 film version of Fences following its Tony-winning Broadway revival and bringing an Oscar to Viola Davis as well as Denzel’s 10th nomination, and then 2020’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, this seems like a natural move as well as a work that perhaps lends itself better than others in Wilson’s canon to a cinematic adaptation.

"Tell your momma to tell you about that piano... Ask her how them pictures got on there." Netflix has just revealed the first official trailer for a film titled The Piano Lesson, an adaptation of the August Wilson play, made by the entire Washington family. It's produced by Denzel Washington, featuring his son John David Washington, directed by his other son Malcolm Washington, making his feature directorial debut. Set for a limited theatrical release in the fall before it's streaming on Netflix at the end of November. The story follows the lives of the Charles family as they deal with themes of family legacy and more, in deciding what to do with an heirloom, the family piano. With eldest son John David working with Oscar-winning directors like Spike Lee and Christopher Nolan, daughter Olivia starring in the Boots Riley series “I’m a Virgo” and the West End production of “Slave Play,” and youngest son Malcolm getting behind the camera to adapt August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “The Piano Lesson,” it’s fair to say Denzel Washington and wife Pauletta Washington may be shaping the next great entertainment dynasty, up there with the Hustons and the Fondas. Producing his son Malcolm’s directorial debut, which stars both his other son John David and one of his best friends, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel helps to hone in on one of the key themes of “The Piano Lesson”: Family legacy.

The trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, has been unveiled. Both Jackson and Washington are reprising their roles from the Broadway revival of the show, which wrapped up its run in Jan. 2023.
The film, directed by Malcolm Washington, follows the lives of the Charles family, led by Doaker Charles, (Jackson) in 1936 during the aftermath of the Great Depression. The family heirloom piano is decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor. One brother plans to build a family fortune by selling the instrument and buying the land his family toiled, while his sister tries to keep it to preserve the family history.
John David Washington plays Doaker’s nephew Boy Willie, a role Jackson himself had originated in the 1987 stage production. The trailer sees Boy Willie telling his niece that the piano represents her family.

John David Washington and his sister, played by Danielle Deadwyler, battle over a prized heirloom piano that tears their family apart in the trailer (below) for Netflix’s The Piano Lesson, which was released on Wednesday.
“You feel that? That’s your family. That’s your blood,” David Washington, in the role of Boy Willie, tells a young woman (Skylar Smith) in the Charles household at one point in the trailer, as her hand runs over a piano decorated with the faces of family members carved by an enslaved ancestor.
The 130-year-old piano pits Boy Willie against his sister Berniece, played by Deadwyler, as he plans to sell the heirloom to build a family fortune, while his sister wants to hold onto the sole vestige of their family legacy.

When OutKast dropped “Ms. Jackson” in the fall of 2000, the world was stunned. Nobody had ever heard a hip-hop song that sounded anything like this. But there’s never been anybody like OutKast before. The Atlanta duo, made up of Andre 3000 and Big Boi, brought their innovative hip-hop style to the pop charts with “Ms. Jackson,” from their album Stankonia. “Ms. Jackson” blew up into their first Number One hit, and it’s gone down in history as one of the group’s definitive classics. Sarah McLachlan’s late ’90s all-female touring festival Lilith Fair is the subject of a new feature-length documentary.
Coming from the CBC, the authorized film is inspired by the 2019 Vanity Fair article Building a Mystery: An Oral History of Lilith Fair, written by Jessica Hopper with former Consequence editor Sasha Geffen and Jenn Pelly. Simply titled Lilith Fair, it’s directed by Ally Pankiw and pulls from more than 600 hours of archival footage, interviews, and stories from fans, festival organizers, and artists who played Lilith Fair.

Some of the artist interviews included in the documentary include sitdowns with McLachlan herself, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Brandi Carlile, Natalie Merchant, Mýa, Jewel, the Indigo Girls, Emmylou Harris, and Olivia Rodrigo. Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan’s 1990s all-female music festival Lilith Fair is the subject of a feature documentary from the CBC and director Ally Pankiw.
The first Lilith Fair, which McLachlan spearheaded to defy a male-dominated music industry that couldn’t envision more than one woman performing on a concert stage or on a radio playlist, kicked off on July 5, 1997.
Over a quarter-century later, Dan Levy’s Not a Real Production Company and Elevation Pictures are co-producing Lilith Fair, with interviews by McLachlan, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Natalie Merchant, Mýa, Jewel, Indigo Girls, Emmylou Harris, Brandi Carlile and Olivia Rodrigo.
The original ladies-first Lilith Fair tour from 1997 to 1999 attracted artists like Crow, Tracy Chapman, Fiona Apple and Liz Phair from across the music world, and went on to help launch the careers of performers like Missy Elliott, The Chicks, Nelly Furtado and Christina Aguilera.
