Fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” were sad when her love interest and fan favorite Angel announced his departure at the end of the third season. But the character of Angel, played by David Boreanaz, got his own spin-off show that took him away from Sunnydale and to the big city of Los Angeles. “Angel” debuted on October 5, 1999 and immediately split fans on which was the “better” show. Read on for more about the “Angel” 25th anniversary.
The character of Angel was born an Irishman named Liam, who was turned into a vampire by Darla (Julie Benz) over two centuries before, and became the sadistic and feared Angelus, who caused years of death and destruction across Europe. But he wreaked havoc on the wrong people when he angered the Romani clan, who cursed him with his human soul filled with memories of the pain he has caused. His guilt and...

“I killed Liz. I killed the teen dream. “Deal with it.”
Every high school has them: the beautiful ones. Glamorous, popular, happy, and thriving, these teenage dream girls rise to the top of any social environment and effortlessly achieve anything they put their minds to. Serving as both role models and fashion plates, they’re worshiped and revered by the rest of the school who grasp for scraps of their exorbitant power. While there have always been mean girls who also happen to be popular, this cinematic archetype arguably dates back to the weaponized girlie pop perfection of Darren Stein‘s Jawbreaker . Closing out the 20th century, this high camp film originated the now iconic hot girl walk while exploring the hell of teenage girlhood.

A quarter of a century later, the high camp fashion of 1999’s Jawbreaker still has a chokehold on fans of the cult classic.
While reuniting for the Darren Stein-helmed teen movie’s 25th anniversary, Jawbreaker stars Judy Greer and Julie Benz looked back on their wardrobe from the set of the film and what they took home.
“I had some clothes for a little while, but I don’t remember what happened to them,” Greer told People after playing Fern Mayo, an awkward nerd who gets made over into the popular Vylette. “I had one of my ‘Vylette’ posters and I think it’s in a big tub of work mementos.”
Benz, who played mean girl minion Marcie “Foxy” Fox, recalled she “got to keep one outfit and it was the red, lacy, yellowy-orange top and skirt, and I think I wore that like 80 times until it fell apart.

In 2015, Netflix released the indie horror film Circle on its platform, and it instantly became the talk of the town due to its intriguing premise. It centers around a group of 50 strangers who awaken in a dark room to find out that they're being held captive and forced to participate in a deadly game. Faced with their imminent executions, they must choose one person among them to live.
It was written and directed by Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione and was inspired by the 1957 legal drama film 12 Angry Men. Michael Nardelli, Carter Jenkins, Lawrence Kao, Allegra Masters, Julie Benz, and many others starred in the movie.
Now, almost 10 years after its release, the horror flick has been announced to be getting a sequel. It's titled Circles, and two producers from the original film are back to make it. Those two producers are Nardelli, who also starred in Circle as sole survivor Eric,...

The show may have been called "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," but the chosen one (Sarah Michelle Gellar) fought all different types of monsters, not just the fangy, blood-sucky kind. For series creator Joss Whedon, this was to ensure his premise had enough to sustain itself in the transition from a movie to an ongoing TV series:
"Though ['Buffy'] had been a fun idea for a movie, I wasn't really sure if there was a whole series there, just about this girl going and killing vampires. So, I started to think about it and I came up with the notion of playing all sorts of horror movies in high school and making them really metaphors for how frightening and horrible high school is."
Whedon said as much in a 1998 interview (when "Buffy" had started its third season). In bringing these vampires to life onscreen, Whedon said there were two, contradictory rules: they had to look both demonic,...

No good villain is ever truly gone, especially in horror movies. This September saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, a.k.a. “Jigsaw,” the trap-making serial killer of the Saw movies, with the release of Saw X. This is despite the fact that Kramer has been dead since the end of Saw III, which came out back in 2006. But a little thing like death never stopped the Saw franchise. Instead of literally bringing Kramer back from the dead, the subsequent sequels continued Bell’s participation with devices like flashbacks. Hell, even Saw IV played a trick on audiences by staging a lot of its action at the same time as Saw III.
One of those post-Kramer sequels celebrates its 15th anniversary this year: Saw V, which featured Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, a murderous cop who became Jigsaw’s protégé and continued his campaign of bloodshed.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Meaner Than “Mean Girls.” Hotter Than “Heathers.” Better Than Barbenheimer.
I feel like kind of a basic bitch recommending “Jawbreaker” for After Dark. Don’t get me wrong: Darren Stein’s fiendishly messed-up mean girl movie from 1999 is absolutely worth canonizing as one of the all-time great midnight movies, and generally speaking, I’ll find — and use — any excuse to rewatch this camp masterpiece faster than Carol Kane can say, “Be nice, girls.”
But it feels borderline obvious to suggest this bonafide cult classic and ode to candy-coated cruelty, widely...

The untimely passing of actor Ray Stevenson has shocked us all. I personally fell in love with the actor when I first saw him as Titus Pullo in the excellent series Rome. I still can’t believe that he’s gone. What a loss. Which is why on this week’s The Arrow in the Head Show, we decided to revisit his take on Frank Castle in the 2008 Punisher: War Zone. Directed by Lexi Alexander, the film is about: Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, turns the streets of New York City red as he wages a one man war against the crime syndicate responsible for the death of his wife and two kids. Aided by his trusted sidekick, Microchip, he almost kills Billy Russoti and leaves him horribly disfigured. Billy renames himself Jigsaw and with the help of his crazed brother Loony Bin Jim,...

Hearing about Ray Stevenson’s unfortunate passing made me want to revisit one of his best movies….
Punisher: War Zone (2008)
Director: Lexi Alexander
Stars: Ray Stevenson, Dominic West, Julie Benz
Is There A Plot?
Former family man Frank Castle spends his time violently eradicating organized crime, but after an eventful night of sending a mob boss face-first through a glass crusher and accidentally killing an undercover FBI agent, The Punisher finds himself being hunted by those on both sides of the law.
What’S The Damage?
The Punisher has had an interesting foray in to live action over the years. The 1989 Dolph Lundgren movie still holds up, but he honestly could’ve been any generic vigilante. Jon Bernthal gave us a more psychologically complex Frank Castle in his Netflix series, while Thomas Jane provided what fans had long been clamoring for…The Punisher punishing Tampa, Florida. Netflix and Blumhouse have parted ways with Lexi Alexander’s “Absolute Dominion,” a sci-fi martial arts film led by Patton Oswalt, Alex Winter and Julie Ann Emery.
An insider confirmed that Netflix will no longer distribute the film, while Blumhouse is no longer attached as a producer. Though the decision wasn’t easy, said the insider, they support Alexander finding another distributor.
Set in 2085, the movie centers on a futuristic martial arts tournament in which the victor wins absolute dominion for one religion. Greenlit by Netflix in April of this year, the Nevada shoot wrapped in August and the film is now in post-production.
Writer-director-producer Alexander did not directly comment on the decision. However, she retweeted the news with the message “Don’t worry, it’s not bad news. But here are the leads…” above images of four cast members.

Much like its parent show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" relied heavily on metaphor. However, while "Buffy" dealt with the high school experience, only truly going dark in its later seasons, "Angel" always sought to tell more adult-oriented stories. The spin-off never quite reached the same heights of the original, but it came pretty damn close, and there are certain aspects of the series that were even stronger. For one, just about every character who made the jump from "Buffy" to "Angel" was the better for it. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Wesley (Alexis Denisof), Faith (Eliza Dushku), and Darla (Julie Benz) all went from being relatively one-dimensional, to becoming some of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse. Even Harmony (Mercedes McNab) was vastly improved.

Others in the ensemble include 2019 Honorary Academy Award winner Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans), Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Thora Birch (Ghost World) and Julie Benz (Dexter).
The coming-of-age film said to be in the vein of Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade follows the introverted and highly creative high school senior Jake (Fox) as he experiences his first love with Alice (Daddario), a brash and outgoing classmate. As the two open up to one another, the seemingly opposite pair find they have more in common than meets the eye. Studi plays Jake’s teacher, with Birch as his mother, and Benz as the school’s guidance counselor who helps him with his social anxieties.

Deb is bewildered, as Silvio didn’t consult her before hiring. But before long, the two grow closer, and when the pregnancy nears its conclusion, Silvio feels like the odd man out. Well, they wrapped up the mystery behind who was after Owen, and it wasn't dirty deputy Griffin after all.
Griffin was the perfect red herring to distract from Sadie, and Owen and Marjan spent most of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 3 Episode 12 assuming he was the culprit.
Of course, it turned out Sadie was Owen's stalker, the repercussions of which caused some heartbreaking developments for T.K., too.
It's a timliness to the topic of Owen and his anger management issues, and it's something that we've discussed frequently for a bit now.
When exactly does Lone Star plan to address Owen's violence seriously? It's redundant, for starters, but the way they go about dismissing and downplaying it remains frustrating and disturbing.
Everyone dismisses Owen's knack for punching people as if it's just a classic Owen thing to roll their eyes at because "Owen is just being Owen." They play...

Well, that didn’t take long. Just one week after Owen found a bloody pig corpse in his bed (gross, by the way!) on 9-1-1: Lone Star, we already know who put it there — and it’s not who we expected.
Owen reasonably assumed that Sheriff’s Deputy Roy Griffin, the dirty cop who nearly killed him during the ice storm earlier this season, was to blame. After all, he’d been released without so much as a trial.

“9-1-1: Lone Star” has already featured guest appearances by two “Angel” alums, Julie Benz and Amy Acker, during the first few episodes of its currently airing third season. And if showrunner Tim Minear — who was a writer and executive producer on “Angel” and brought in Gina Torres, a vet of the WB series, as a lead on “Lone Star” at the start of Season 2 — is down for it, an actress from one of Minear’s other beloved series would love to make another reunion happen: “Firefly” star Morena Baccarin.
“Oh, that would be fun! I haven’t seen those guys in forever,” Baccarin told Variety Friday, during an interview for her upcoming NBC drama “The Endgame.” “I love Tim. Yeah, I just got to clear my schedule with these guys,” she said, pointing to her new bosses, “Endgame” co-creators and executive producers Nick Wooton and Jake Coburn.

Several characters’ fates are left hanging in the balance by the end of Monday’s 9-1-1: Lone Star premiere. And while we hate to leave them hanging any longer (sorry, y’all!), there’s something we absolutely need to discuss first.
The only thing more devastating than the ice storm that hit Texas this week was the apparent demise of “Tarlos,” a couple so hot they once failed to realize their house was on fire while they were having sex. So, what could have possibly led to T.K. and Carlos calling it quits? That’s the question on everyone’s mind.

Captain Owen Strand (Rob Lowe) is crossing paths with a couple Angel vets on 9-1-1: Lone Star. Julie Benz and Amy Acker will be guest starring — not together, sadly — in Season 3 of the Fox first responder drama, TV Insider has learned exclusively. Benz will play Sadie, an artist and outdoors woman with the humility and wonder of a naturalist but the swagger and brass of a native Texan. She’s in the cabin next to Owen’s in the hill country. “Sadie is there for this first adventure [of the ice storm hitting Austin], and she absolutely could come back at some point,” executive producer Tim Minear says. “Owen and Sadie are not really a romantic coupling so much as two formidable self-assured people who find each other in a moment of crisis.” Acker’s Catherine, the...

Alert: This story contains details of tonight’s premiere of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood premiere
Nearly a decade after Showtime’s Dexter concluded after 8 seasons, serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is back in the limited series New Blood—and boy is he rusty.
In Sunday night’s premiere, Dexter, who now goes by the alias of Jim Lindsay, is revealed to be far away from Sunny Miami and now living in Iron Lake, New York where he’s living with his sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter). Well, living wouldn’t be the right word since she actually died in the series finale.
Deb is back and living in Dexter’s subconscious as his new Dark Passenger. It is as yet unknown if James Remar will pop in at some point to reprise the role of Dexter and Deb’s dad, Harry Morgan—Dexter’s original Dark Passenger.

Dexter: New Blood showrunner Clyde Phillips isn’t shy when looking back at his work on the series proper. When we mention that Season 4 was “arguably the show’s best season,” the executive producer interrupts the declaration with a laugh and an exclamation: “Inarguably!”
Phillips left the original show following a fourth season that saw Dexter take down the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), shortly after Trinity left wife Rita (Julie Benz) dead and bloodied in a bathtub. Now, Phillips is back to reclaim the reins in Showtime’s new limited event series (premiering Sunday at 9/8c).

We’re just about a month away from the November 7 premiere of “Dexter: New Blood” on Showtime, which will reunite fans with their favorite serial killer. Little is known about the plot of Season 9, except for the fact that Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is now living a secluded life in Iron Lake, New York after faking his death in the 2013 series finale. His sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) will also be a part of the revival, though it’s unclear in what capacity as she died (for real) at the hands of psychopath Oliver Saxon (Darri Ingolfsson) in the final season.

The Movie Partnership has debuted a trailer for the affecting drama inspired on true events ‘Foster Boy’.
Based on writer Jay Paul Deratany’s experiences as a trial lawyer fighting for child welfare in Chicago, the film follows the trial of a for-profit Foster care agency, who puts a known sex offender into the same foster home as a lawyer’s young client, Jamal, with catastrophic results. Each man heals the other in the pursuit of justice, as they expose the horrifying corrupt agency.
Executive Producer Shaquille O’Neal says, “A lot of what you see in that film, actually happened in the courtroom and Shane shows us the trauma and crushing emotional baggage foster kids carry for the rest of their lives.”
A firm festival favourite, the film is produced by Peter Samuelson; founder of First Star, a charity that gives academic support to young adults in the care system...

Though Carpenter — who played Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel — has alluded to her experiences with Whedon in the past, on Feb. 10 the actress posted a deeply detailed missive on social media, elaborating on her claims and recalling Whedon’s “history of being casually cruel,” his creation of “hostile and toxic work environments,” what the Angel showrunner allegedly said and did to her during her real-life pregnancy,...
