In the first episode of Hulu’s Under the Bridge, Reena Virk is trying to fit in with a new group of friends. Her way of bonding? Playing The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 opus Life After Death.
That album — his second — was released 16 days after the rap icon was gunned down to death. Virk, played by Vritika Gupta, jumps on the bed as she and other teenage girls rap the lyrics to “Kick in the Door.” In the second episode of the scripted series following the murder of the 14-year-old Indian-Canadian teen, the lyrical mastermind shows up again when Virk is invited to a vigil her classmates hold in honor of the future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. The teens live in the suburban municipality located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
The eight episodes of Under the Bridge not only tell the story of Virk, but also weave in The Notorious B.

John Mulaney’s wildly chaotic six-episode run of Everybody’s In LA featured old punks, phone-ins and just about every top comedian in the states.
But the show, which ran for six episodes around the Netflix Is A Joke Festival between May 3 and May 10, was originally designed as a variety show. “I wanted everyone to go make what they wanted and I will put it on. We can’t get renewed. We should actually be a variety show,” he said.
Mulaney was asked why he wanted to make a show that was largely difficult? He said that Netflix approached him as they wanted to do something live across the comedy festival but weren’t entirely sure what. “One idea they had was stand-up at the Geffen Theater. Only with only David doing stand-up, just Laura Nyro stories. He had a tight hour,” Mulaney joked. “I liked that it was an...

Weezer were among the many people in Los Angeles this week who showed up for John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A., performing two songs on the comedian’s delightfully shaggy and silly one-week-only talk show.
The band led with “The Good Life,” the great Pinkerton single about wanting nothing more than to shake off anxiety, heartache, and despair, and get back out in the world (even though the song is still shot through with a bit of that anxiety, heartache, and despair). Mulaney introduced the performance with characteristic anti-zeal: “Hey party animals,...

John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A. proved to be very much a late-night styled talk show in its live premiere Friday night on Netflix. Now like any good late night show, the six-episode miniseries is revealing its lineup for the coming week—and, as promised, it’s a doozy.
Leading things off tonight (and explaining this week’s Daily Show scheduling switcheroo) is none other than Jon Stewart. Stewart, like most of Mulaney’s guests this week, is in Los Angeles for the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival. He performed over the weekend at L.A.’s Greek Theatre.
Other guests sitting down with Mulaney later in the week include Nate Bargatze, Sarah Silverman, David Letterman, Bill Hader, Rony Chieng, and Hannah Gadsby.
Each night also features a musical performace, with Warren G kicking things off tonight, followed by Joyce Manor, Weezer, Los Lobos, and Beck.

He was initially enthused by the Rastafarian concept of locs and their spiritual significance, finding meaning behind the now-popular hairdo. Although not as invested anymore, he realizes how his loc journey coincides with his personal development. There’s been plenty of breakage but also restoration.

Soulful jazz great Les McCann, whose work was sampled by hundreds of hip-hop artists including Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre, died Friday in the Los Angeles area. He was 88.
The musician, who released more than 60 albums over the course of his career, had been admitted to a hospital from the nursing care facility he’d lived in for the past four years and was diagnosed with pneumonia, his manager Alan Abrahams told The Hollywood Reporter.
In a prolific career, he was arguably best known for his 1969 Montreaux Jazz Festival performance of the protest song “Compared to What.”
McCann joined forces with saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey. The three hadn’t played together before, and there wasn’t time for rehearsal, according to The New York Times.
The outlet cites the liner notes for a reissue of the concert album, the Grammy-nominated Swiss Movement, in which McCann writes: “Just before we went onstage,...

Parents just don’t understand, and they haven’t been alone in trying to make sense of Will Smith’s angry assault on Chris Rock a year and a half ago at the Oscars. Ok, let's be honest - did we really expect the MTV VMAs, of all award shows, to deliver the best hip-hop 50 tribute of the year? The "all-star finale performance" MTV touted ahead of the Sept. 12 event included Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Dmc (of Run-d.M.C.), Doug E. Fresh, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as performers. The 10-minute tribute intended to honor the culture's entire 50-year history, but with a lineup that shallow (and New York-skewed), is that even possible?
The VMAs aren't alone: it seems every award show's hip-hop 50 tribute has missed the mark this year. The Grammys kicked off the milestone celebration in February with an old school-meets-new-school performance, which featured everyone from Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul to Lil Baby, GloRilla, and Lil Uzi Vert. The BET Awards followed suit in June with a "non-stop party" of medley performances from folks like Warren G,...

Wiz Khalifa had the honors of throwing out the first pitch prior to tonight’s Pittsburgh Pirates game — and he did so while on shrooms.
“Finna get stoned af and throw this first pitch at the pirates game,” the rapper tweeted prior to taking the mound. “Shroomed out throwin a baseball is crazy.” The magic mushrooms didn’t seem to have much of an effect on Khalifa’s abilities, as he managed to get the ball across home plate — albeit a bit outside.
Khalifa letter enjoyed some munchies in the form of Cracker Jack.
It’s worth noting that Khalifa isn’t the first person to take a Pittsburgh Pirates mound while under the influence. Back in 1970, Dock Ellis famously threw a no-hitter while on acid.

The 2023 BET Awards honored the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with dozens of performances that played like a musical family reunion as pioneers of the genre blazed the stage during a hostless but party-filled show held during the writers strike.
The Sugarhill Gang, Big Daddy Kane, Mc Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Erick Sermon and Keith Murray performed Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating rap music and honoring its roots as well as its domination in pop culture.
Ja Rule, Red Man, E-40, Master P, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Styles P, T.I., Fabolous, Trick Daddy, Trina, Uncle Luke and Skillz hit the stage, helping the four-hour-show flow during the writers strike, which several presenters acknowledged before giving out awards, including Grammy-winning singer Muni Long.
“Let’s take a moment to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with the artists who make us laugh, cry and, most important, think — our Writers Guild of America family.

Jeff Lynne, Gloria Estefan, Teddy Riley, Glen Ballard, and Liz Rose will still be inducted at the ceremony, where Tim Rice will receive the organization’s highest honor, the Johnny Mercer Award. Movie soundtracks can elevate ordinary stories, adding depth and resonance to beloved films. The lasting impact of these soundtracks is evident in the instantly recognizable songs that continue to endure. Sometimes, the music becomes a movie’s highlight, compensating for weaker storylines or characters.
Classic movie musicals like West Side Story have stood the test of time, while films like The Bodyguard provided a platform for legendary artists to showcase their talents. The longevity of these soundtracks is often measured by their chart performance, reflecting their profound influence on generations.
The intertwining of music and cinema is a magical combination. The closing notes of The Breakfast Club, the era-defining mix of Dazed and Confused, and the genius of Prince in Purple Rain are just a few examples of the powerful synergy between sound and vision.

As their name suggests, Gabriels are blessed with the voice of an angel. It belongs to Jacob Lusk, a 35-year-old gospel singer with the power to break your heart with a mere vocal quiver. While the news has elicited sadness, especially perhaps from newer fans of the globally popular group, it has also been met with understanding and support from most members of the diverse fandom. And as we all wait for the next chapter in BTS history to begin, there is an expansive backlog of BTS content to watch or rewatch. While much of BTS’ content is,...
