Back in 2013, Spike Jonze’s Her, I really didn’t believe that someone could fall madly in love with an AI. But it was indeed a different time and things have changed pretty drastically. Today, technology has become an essential part of our daily lives and if I am not wrong to say this out loud, most of us won’t be able to survive without it. It is because of this particular reason why Vikramaditya Motwane’s cyber-thriller Ctrl, hits so hard. He’s easily one of the best directors in India, if not the best (at least in my opinion), and he’s nailed the portrayal of how technology, AI, and social media have taken control of our lives. The story revolves around a couple, Nella Awasthi and Joe Mascarenhas, a super popular influencer pair who have been together for five years. But on their fifth anniversary, something goes wrong,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “It’s What’s Inside,” now streaming on Netflix.
Writer and director Greg Jardin’s debut feature, “It’s What’s Inside,” is a body-swapping mystery. Yet Jardin had his own out-of-body experience the day the movie started an intense bidding war at Sundance in January.
“It’s still surreal now,” he says. “We made the movie in a bit of a bubble, $2.5 million independent, just with hopes that someone would buy it at a festival. Getting into Sundance alone was awesome. And then our first offer came in 24 hours after our premiere, and the offer started at $5 million, which was double our budget. I was like, ‘Man, this is incredible.'”
But the buzz around Park City kept growing.
“It was my first experience,” he says. “With any of that stuff, there’s essentially a bidding war that lasted about 36 hours. I was in meetings with our financiers and sales agent.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis collected divisive reactions as soon as it premiered on the festival circuit. Many were already giving their impressions about how his ambition and passion couldn’t quite land in the execution of his vision. It even became a marketing point early on as the studio tried to get ahead of the bad word-of-mouth by giving the perspective that the film is already ahead of its time. However, that marketing ploy would then suffer its own controversy when it was revealed that the critic quotes that were used in the trailer (in order to show how his past regarded works were subject of their own scrutiny) were actually manifested. The film is now out and has had a disastrous showing at the box office and while one review gave it a perfect rating of five-stars, it comes from Coppola himself. ScreenRant now reports on the reactions...

"I spent all my money to make the movie..." Some of you may have heard of this film before, some of you maybe not. But now it's screening again with a glorious 4K re-release thanks to Mubi – this interview might convince you to watch. Tarsem's film The Fall is considered a masterpiece by some critics, a flop by others, though it is being given a chance to shine again 18 years later with this restoration. The Fall 4K "Restored Cut" originally premiered at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival a few months ago, and just debuted streaming on Mubi. During the premiere, Letterboxd caught up with filmmaker Tarsem Singh and asked him to read some of the recent Letterboxd reviews raving about the film. The result is this extra fascinating 8-minute video where Tarsem goes on and on telling amazing stories about the film and the process and how hard it was to make & distribute.

Fantastical storytelling underpins Tarsem’s 2006 film, in which an injured stuntman relates an elaborate fable to a young girl
Tarsem Singh’s indulgent epic, produced by Spike Jonze and David Fincher, was little seen on its original release in 2006, and now gets a rerelease in a 4K restoration on the Mubi streaming platform. It’s certainly worth noticing, with its Gilliamesque surrealism, and its setting in Rajasthan, north-western India, offers wonderful landscapes. Its beguiling set pieces feature Justine Waddell playing some deadpan comedy as a gloriously costumed princess – although I have to admit that in general the film’s rather placid, stately, fantasy style can be exasperatingly inert.
The scene is Los Angeles in the early years of silent pictures; Lee Pace plays Roy, a stuntman who is now seriously, perhaps permanently, injured. He is laid up in hospital and deeply depressed after a dangerous fall filming a movie whose...

With six wins on Wednesday night, September 11, Taylor Swift ruled the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, though she didn’t dominate them quite the way she did last year, when she took home a near-record nine trophies. See this year’s complete list of winners here.
Swift took home Video of the Year, Best Direction, Best Editing and Song of Summer for “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. She also claimed Artist of the Year and Best Pop, the latter of which surprisingly had no specific video specified for it like usual, just recording artists. Her Video of the Year win extends her record for the most victories in that category; she has now claimed that trophy five times, including the last three in a row. And her Best Directing win puts her ahead of Spike Jonze and David Fincher on the list of the most awarded filmmakers.

After the death of his girlfriend Daniela (The White Lotus’ Beatrice Grannò), Nicolas (Henry Golding of Crazy Rich Asians), the protagonist of Nacho Vigalondo’s Daniela Forever, falls into a deep depression. Grief fogs daily life — slowing time and muting once pleasurable activities. Piles of clothes and dirty dishes precariously stacked on kitchen surfaces measure his uneven motivation. The atmosphere is bleak and Nicolas, a DJ living in Madrid, feels trapped. So when the chance to find relief from his punishing memories presents itself, he is intrigued.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Daniela Forever is an inverse Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind mixed with the sci-fi preoccupations of last year’s Fingernails. The film follows Nicolas as he embarks on a drug trial treatment meant to alleviate his depression through lucid dreaming. Instead of erasing his memories, a pill allows him to conjure a false world in which Daniela is still alive.

Joaquin Phoenix made his professional acting debut in the 1985 TV movie "Kids Don't Tell," a heady primetime drama about child victims of sexual assault. Phoenix was only 11 at the time. The following year, Phoenix first appeared in theaters in the kid-friendly drama "SpaceCamp," about teenagers and children who are accidentally launched into space. Phoenix continued to land high-profile roles with interesting directors, appearing in Ron Howard's "Parenthood" in 1989 and Gun Van Sant's "To Die For" in 1995. Phoenix soon became an indie darling, and a go-to actor for extreme, quirky, sometimes dark roles. He played a kooky thug in Oliver Stone's "U Turn," and a wise pornographer in Joel Schumacher's "8mm."
By the time he appeared in Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" in 2000, Phoenix was a household name. The role earned him the first of four (to date) Academy Award nominations. He would also be nominated for playing Johnny Cash...

Many great investigative pieces have been written about Vice, the publication that had a spectacular rise as well as an explosive collapse, culminating in the mass layoffs of hundreds of employees earlier this year and subsequent attempts by those like co-founder Shane Smith to save it. Eddie Huang’s documentary, “Vice Is Broke,” is not going to be one of them.
This is something that the director, a former employee and host for the company who says he had to fight to receive full compensation for the work he did, would likely agree with. Early on in his documentary, Huang makes clear that he isn’t interested in following conventions of the form by relying on the familiar pattern of cutting to talking heads and recountings of what happened.

Tech moguls want us to believe that they’re ushering in the rosy AI-smoothed world of Spike Jonze’s Her. Alarmists, on the other hand, warn that they’re bringing on a Terminator-like dystopia. Silicon Valley may build the software, but when it comes to envisioning the future, it’s to Hollywood we turn. David Fincher has firmly established himself as a master of blending art and commerce. It’s especially impressive considering his output has been uniformly dark, moody and disturbing, with flashes of wit and satire thrown in. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1962, Fincher cut his teeth at special effects house Industrial Light and Magic, working on such films as “Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi” (1983) and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). He left to pursue a career in directing, making his mark with a commercial for the American Cancer Society that depicted a fetus smoking a cigarette. He co-founded Propaganda Films, a production house for music videos and commercials that employed future filmmakers Spike Jonze, Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, Alex Proyas, Mark Romanek, Zach Snyder and Gore Verbinski. Fincher himself helmed several famous music videos, including “Vogue,...

Is there anything as heartwarming as a story about a jerk in Hollywood getting their comeuppance? Perhaps a jerk in Hollywood getting his comeuppance courtesy of one of the biggest movie stars in the world. This is exactly what happened to David O. Russell when the notorious (yet somehow still regularly employed) director worked with George Clooney on the film "Three Kings" back in the late '90s.
A dark military comedy set in the aftermath of the Gulf War, "Three Kings" was the third feature film by Russell. The filmmaker also got script credit on the film's screenplay, though outlets including Entertainment Weekly reported at the time that John Ridley actually wrote it. "Three Kings" starred Clooney, Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg, and Spike Jonze, and it received near-universal acclaim upon release. George Clooney is reflecting on his career and revealed that he doesn’t want to work with David O. Russell again.
In a joint interview with Brad Pitt, the pair discussed “time allotment” and deciding who they want to spend time with while working.
“The older you get, time allotment is very different,” Clooney told GQ. “Five months out of your life is a lot.”
Russell is not someone Clooney would like to spend five months of his life filming with.
“And so it’s not just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go do a really good film, like Three Kings, and I’m going to have a miserable f*** like David O Russell making my life hell. Making every person in the crew’s life hell,'” Clooney added. “It’s not worth it. Not at this point in my life. Just to have a good product.”

Richard Hunter’s feature “Foul Evil Deeds” is one of the more European of British first features, taking its inspiration from continental art house names rather than the more usual luminaries of U.K. social realism such as Ken Loach and Mike Leigh.
It consists of interwoven stories of everyday wickedness, from the careless to the horrific: “The influences are people like Ulrich Seidel and Michael Haneke being a huge one, Roy Andersson being a big one, and peripherally looking at all of those,” Hunter told Variety.
“The early Ruben Östlund as well. The Britishness, inherently, obviously comes out through me.”
Hunter arrived at filmmaking from advertising. “I did documentary at university, and that led into music videos, and from there into commercials. And there I found my wet place in that world. The year 2022 in film, looking back, was a year of Grandiosity. Yes, Grandiosity, with a capital G. In this year’s Best Picture category, we have such hits as ‘Avatar 2: The Way of Water,’ ‘Elvis,’ ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ and ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ whose title itself even nods to grandiosity. Even Todd Field’s ‘Tár’ has a sense of epic proportions to it. And then comes Damien Chazelle’s ‘Babylon’– a film of immense proportion excitedly dreamed up by the mind behind the multi-Oscar-winning ‘Whiplash’ and ‘La La Land,’ and packed with some of the biggest stars of our time – Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, to casually name a few. A gigantic opus of a film clocking in at three hours and nine minutes long, reaching new heights in Chazelle’s oeuvre, audacious and ambitious as ever – and it flops! With a...

Filled with hand-drawn illustrations that beautifully capture the joy and innocence of early childhood, it’s easy to understand why filmmakers have long dreamed of bringing Harold’s story to the screen.
However, transferring such a minimalist children’s tale to a big-budget live-action/animation hybrid proved creatively challenging. Multiple directors took a stab at an adaptation over the decades, including celebrated talents like Maurice Sendak and Spike Jonze. Their visionary approaches likely would have remained true to the original’s spirit of unfettered imagination. But compromises had to be made for this to reach audiences at the box office.

The first few minutes of Harold and the Purple Crayon feature charming hand-drawn animation very much in the style of the 1955 classic children’s picture book by Crockett Johnson, making it easy to see why it’s still popular nearly 70 years later. In the original story, Harold was just a young boy, creating a wonderful world for himself thanks to his magic crayon. Unfortunately, in the new big screen, live-action/animated adaptation directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ferdinand, Rio, Ice Age), he’s all grown up. And despite the appeal of star Zachary Levi, it’s unlikely the film will have the same staying power.
There have been numerous attempts at a film version of the book dating back years and involving such major talents as Maurice Sendak, David O. Russell, Will Smith, Steven Spielberg and Spike Jonze (what a movie he would have likely made!). Even this version has been delayed more than once,...

While trying to chat up classmate Madi (Mahaela Park) on Aim, Chris (Izaac Wang) skims her MySpace for an “in”. Then, beneath all the Paramore pictures and low-res GIFs is a list of her favorite movies. Oh, A Walk to Remember is one of them. He fakes loving it; “its helllllla good,” he says. Now he has to maintain that––at least for a few scenes. This sort of thing happens throughout Sean Wang’s feature directorial debut. The character moments flow on a moment-to-moment basis and the period detail is quite good beneath it. Ultimately, Dìdi (弟弟) works despite its untapped potential.

After its disappointing opening weekend at the box office, director Greg Berlanti's 1960s-set Space Race romantic comedy "Fly Me to the Moon" seems practically destined to become a forgotten film that will end up streaming on Apple TV+, where very few people will see it. That's a shame, because after a somewhat rocky opening few minutes, the movie settles into a nice groove and ends up becoming the type of charming, stylish throwback we're always saying we want to see more of. A huge part of the reason for the film's creative success is the casting of Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson in the lead roles; their chemistry is evident, and there's an old-fashioned playfulness to their banter. More importantly, though, the movie gives Johansson the opportunity to do something she's very rarely been allowed to do on screen: have fun.

Actor, who claimed ChatGPT update used an imitation of her voice, says she declined to provide her own as ‘it went against my core values’
Scarlett Johansson has spoken out against OpenAI and deepfake technology, saying it was “so disturbing” and she was “so angry” after the company seemingly mimicked her voice for its ChatGPT system Sky.
The actor made headlines earlier this year when she issued a public statement saying OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, had contacted her in September 2023 to provide the voice for Sky, in an ode to her role in the Spike Jonze film Her, but she had declined for “personal reasons”. In May, as the company released Sky, Altman shared a tweet that simply read “her”.

Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is set to re-release Tarsem’s cult 2006 film The Fall in a newly restored 4K version from 27 September 2024 in the US, Canada, Latin America, the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Benelux, Turkey and India. The Match Factory is handling sales for the rest of the world.
The 4K restoration will have its world premiere at this year’s Locarno Film Festival where it will play on the Piazza Grande. Mubi will subsequently stream it on its service.
Set in Los Angeles, circa 1920s, the visually striking movie charts the story of an immigrant girl in a hospital recovering from a fall who strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man. He captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination.
Filmed over four years in 20 different locations across the globe, the movie starred Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru and Justine Waddell. The film was originally presented by David Fincher and Spike Jonze, with a script from Dan Gilroy and Nico Soultanakis.
Reviews were mixed for the film and it failed to ignite at the box office, but its visuals were highly praised and Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, calling it a singular work: “You might want to see [it] for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it,” he said.
After debuting at Toronto back in 2006, the film became very hard to track down on streaming services and director Tarsem recently expressed hope the feature would soon get a revival.
Tarsem Singh, known as Tarsem, is also known for movies such as The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez, The Immortals starring Henry Cavill, Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts and Self/less with Ryan Reynolds. The filmmaker is also well known for his music videos, including Rem’s Losing My Religion, which won MTV’s Best Video Award. In 2023, he directed his first feature film in Punjabi, Dear Jassi which won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Director Niclas Larsson didn’t hold back when he approached the reclusive Lara Flynn Boyle about appearing in his new film “Mother, Couch.”
“I needed someone for the character to be broken,” Larsson says. “Instead of faking a broken person, I did some research of who is really broken, and this is something I’ve been very open with Lara about.”
He continues, “I went back to the ‘90s. My mother was a hairdresser and always had all these celebrity magazines. Lara was on the cover throughout my whole childhood. Hollywood fucking raped her. That’s what they do with the starlets.”
Boyle, Ewan McGregor and Rhys Ifans star as siblings who reunite when their mother, played masterfully by Ellen Burstyn, sits on a couch in a furniture store and refuses to leave.

New York City rap icons Beastie Boys have filed a lawsuit against the parent company of Chili’s Grill & Bar for copyright infringement and violating the rap group’s trademark rights over a commercial for the chain that resembles their iconic 1994 “Sabotage” music video.
The suit, filed against Brinker International in a New York Federal Court on Wednesday, was brought by Michael Diamond (Mike D to fans), Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock, and Dechen Yauch as executor of the estate of the late Adam Yauch (McA), who died of parotid cancer in 2012. The complaint asserts that significant portions of the musical composition and sound recording of “Sabotage” were used without permission for the unauthorized Chili’s video, “in which three characters wearing obvious ’70s-style wigs, fake mustaches and sunglasses who were intended to evoke the three members of Beastie Boys performed scenes depicting them “robbing” ingredients from a Chili’s “restaurant.”

On shows like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” the great strength of Rashida Jones has been her plainspoken relatability. Despite her glamorous lineage as the daughter of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton, Jones blends in with ensembles built for everyday quirks rather than large-scale gestures; on those NBC sitcoms, for example, her unfussy delivery style enhanced both the reality and the comedy of her scenes.
Jones tested herself a bit more as a leading lady in the Sofia Coppola movie “On the Rocks,” but her lower-key take on gilded-cage ennui wound up a comfortable fit for what was itself a lower-key Coppola picture of more modest moods and less spiritual distress. In the new Apple TV+ series “Sunny,” however, Jones must access a greater range of emotions — even when they’re supposed to be partially concealed. Mother, Couch filmmaker Niclas Larsson isn’t afraid to take big swings both personally and professionally.
As a teenager in Sweden, Larsson embarked on a five-hour train ride to a Stockholm hotel just so he could have a chance to meet one of his all-time favorite filmmakers, Gus Van Sant. After waiting around all night at a hotel bar, he eventually approached the Good Will Hunting director to praise his Palme d’Or-winning film, Elephant. Their subsequent exchange altered his perspective on filmmaking a great deal, but it also paved the way for Van Sant to eventually serve in a mentor-like capacity during post-production on Larsson’s feature directorial debut, Mother, Couch.

Chris Cooper is an Oscar-winning actor who has brought his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. Let’s take a look back at 17 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).
He hit the Oscar jackpot with his supporting turn in Spike Jonze‘s “Adaptation” (2002), a self-reflective comedy about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman‘s (Nicolas Cage) struggles to adapt Susan Orlean‘s (Meryl Streep) nonfiction book “The Orchid Thief.” Cooper played John Laroche, the eccentric, swampy horticulturalist at the center of Orlean’s story.

When Mel Brooks feature filmmaking debut "The Producers" hit theaters in 1968, it was both a critical/commercial smash and a bit of a scandal. Emboldened in part by the increasing permissiveness of the counterculture comedy era, Brooks pushed the outside of the envelope with a ribald sense of humor he couldn't indulge as a writer for NBC's "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour" and outright shredded it by making light of the Third Reich with the film's fictional musical "Springtime for Hitler." Soon after the film's release, he was confronted in an elevator by a woman who told him "The Producers" was vulgar. Brooks fired back, "Lady, it rose below vulgarity."
This, I believe, is true of "Jackass." Created by Jeff Tremaine, Spike Jonze and Johnny Knoxville, this showcase for a gang of lovable skateboard-culture knuckleheads who subject themselves and each other to a series of physically/mentally...

Most film fans in the ‘80s got their first glimpse of John Cusack on the big screen as one of Anthony Michael Hall’s buddies who placed a bet that requires that their pal to secure a pair of Molly Ringwald’s panties in the John Hughes teen comedy “Sixteen Candles.” Hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Consider that his sister Joan was reduced to playing “Geek Girl” with an awkward brace around neck.
It was uphill from there as Cusack, with his ironically humorous takes on leading manhood, became one of the more in-demand male stars for the next two decades, working with such top-notch directors as John Sayles, Rob Reiner, Cameron Crowe, Stephen Frears, Spike Jonze, Woody Allen, Terrence Malick and Mike Newell. Somehow, Cusack has been under the radar when it comes to be nominated for major awards as a performer. But he has made considerable contributions...

The Beastie Boys’ 1994 classic Ill Communication turns 30 this year and as part of the ongoing celebration, the band has partnered with Vevo for a special annotated version of the “Sabotage” video.
The clip — which is part of Vevo’s “Footnotes” series — is packed with facts about the classic Spike Jonze-directed clip, in which McA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D pay homage to Seventies cop shows. According to one of the annotations, Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz) had long had the idea for a video where the band dressed up as undercover cops during a stakeout.

Rules are made to be broken. Probably this belief is the main reason why so many creative things happen in the world. Especially we love how the movie industry changes thanks to it: the genres get mixed, the stories get more and more complicated, and the outcome is often very unpredictable.
One of the gifts of creative thinking is definitely the existence of dark comedies, and we think whoever is responsible for their creation is a genius. So here is the list of the 5 best dark comedies that may or may not feel guilty about laughing at.

CAA CEO Bryan Lourd opened up about the dispute between OpenAI and one of his star clients, Scarlett Johansson.
In a Financial Times interview, Lourd also said that generative artificial intelligence could be a source of real opportunity for clients, even as the biggest AI firms like OpenAI don’t entirely understand the world of creatives.
Last month, OpenAI pulled its “Sky” chatbot voice from ChatGPT, after users noted that it sounded eerily similar to Scarlett Johansson. The star subsequently released a statement revealing that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had tried to recruit her to voice one of the chatbots, but she had declined, and that she was “shocked” and “angered” when she heard the Sky voice.
“To Scarlett’s credit, she is not afraid to tell the truth and to stand up for herself,” Lourd told the Ft. “When you become someone as globally recognised as she is, the...

“Let’s not make ’em laugh” seems to be the new mantra for rewarding comedies at the Emmys.
Clear-cut, humor-filled chuckle fests once dominated the Emmys for comedy series, with classics such as “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Seinfeld” amusing generations of fans and finding new life via reruns and streaming services.
However, at the dawn of the streaming era, the multi-pronged so-called dramedy began creeping up in the awards circle with titles such as Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” — which famously changed from comedy to drama — and Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” As of late, the category has taken a more serious turn.
In recent years, the nominees and winners for comedy series have reflected a broader, more inclusive interpretation of comedy. Shows like Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag,” along with HBO’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” have garnered critical...

I am in a fix here with the Ross brothers’ 2023 film, Gasoline Rainbow. Usually, I admire the kind of cinema where nothing really happens; the likes of Richard Linklater’s Slacker (1991) and Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) are what I’m talking about. These movies rely solely on the vibe and the conversations between characters; most of the time, I dig those. Gasoline Rainbow is a coming-of-age road-trip movie, which should remind you of movies like Andrea Arnold’s masterful American Honey (2016), a film I absolutely loved, and Harmony Korine’s super-trippy Spring Breakers (2012), which worked for me despite its erratic nature.
The reason I’m bringing up all these is because, while I thought there was a lot to love in Gasoline Rainbow, the whole thing fell quite short of my expectations. And while I convinced myself that I probably would have loved it if I saw it...

Distributor La Vingt-Cinquième Heure has acquired the French rights to Egyptian-American director Dina Amer’s politically sensitive drama “You Resemble Me.” The film tells the story of Hasna Aït Boulahcen, who in 2015 was wrongly believed to be Europe’s first female suicide bomber.
The film is a deeply researched character study of the young Muslim woman, who became linked to the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris even though she didn’t participate in them. Aït Boulahcen died during an anti-terrorism raid alongside her cousin Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who was one of the ringleaders of the coordinated assaults that killed 130 people in the French capital, including 90 at the Bataclan theater.
In a strong show of support, revered French auteur Claire Denis (“High Life”) is boarding “You Resemble Me” as an executive producer. Denis will also participate in onstage conversations with Amer during the film’s French theatrical run this fall.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made his first public comments on the Scarlett Johansson voice controversy, though he opted to mostly sidestep questions about the “Sky” chatbot that many users felt sounded like the actress.
Altman was interviewed by The Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson (whose company cut a deal with OpenAI earlier this week) at the AI for Good Summit Thursday, hosted by the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency focused on communications issues.
Thompson asked Altman about Johansson’s concerns about the OpenAI voice.
“It’s not her voice, it’s not supposed to be. I’m sorry for the confusion, clearly you think it is,” Altman told Thompson. “People are going to have different opinions about how much voices sound alike, but we don’t. It’s not her voice.”
Altman added that he was “not sure what else to say.” Thompson did not ask a follow-up question about Johansson.
