The Mammoth Film Festival is set to open with Shia LeBeouf’s Padre Pio, Abel Ferrara’s historical drama that debuted at Venice.
Ferrara’s latest feature has LeBoeuf playing an Italian friar who rose to prominence at a time when fascist powers began to take over Italy. Padre Pio also stars Asia Argento, Marco Leonardi and Christina Chiriac, and director Ferrara will be at the northern California festival to do a post-film Q&a on March 2.
Mammoth will close with Bonded, which stars Diego Calva and is directed by Mohit Ramchandani. The thriller is inspired by a true story from the producers of Argentina 1985 and is executive produced by Yalitza Aparicio.
Mammoth, which is set to run from March 2 to 6 in Mammoth Lakes, California, has also added the horror thriller Night Shift, which stars Phoebe Tonkin, Lamorne Morris and Patrick Fischler and is directed and written by Benjamin and Paul China.

Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Song and Caitlin Bassett as Addison in ‘Quantum Leap’ season 1 episode 2 (Photo by: Ron Batzdorff/NBC)
Physicist Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) leaps from being part of a gang attempting to steal the Hope Diamond in episode one to being a member of the Atlantis space shuttle crew in NBC’s Quantum Leap episode two. All his friends and fellow lab employees hoped he’d leap from 1985 back to the present, but that’s definitely not the case as he’s currently stuck in 1998.
The space shuttle successfully launches and even reluctant traveler Ben’s wowed by the view from space. Their mission is to put the first piece of the International Space Station in place, and he listens to pilot Samantha Stratton (Carly Pope) and Commander Jim Reynolds (Jose Zuniga) exchange friendly banter. Stratton promises she’s going to make Reynolds proud as Ben is mesmerized by the stars.

A man returns home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family, in this love letter to the Filipino-American community.
Jay Chandrasekhar‘s Easter Sunday is definitely a promising step forward when it comes to significant diversity in the film industry, but that’s almost everything it has going for it. This is an extremely slow-paced and outrageously unfunny comedy that fails at its number one goal – making audiences laugh.
This is a film that prides itself on being an incredibly upbeat, feel-good comedy that’ll inspire you to be closer to your family and love one another. Maybe some viewers will leave the theatre feeling more appreciation for their loved ones, but more than likely, most audiences are just going to leave the...

Now that the first season has ended, it's safe to say "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" is a worthy "Pretty Little Liars" spinoff. It's filled with compelling new characters, twisty plot lines, and tons of killer slasher references, so we're obsessed, to say the least. Since most of the first season's mysteries were wrapped up in the finale episode, there's only one major question remaining: will we get a season two? Read on for everything we know about a possible second season for "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin."
How Does "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" Season 1 End?
At the end of season one, it's revealed that "A" is the brainchild of Principal Clanton (Robert Stanton), Angela Waters's (Gabriella Pizzolo) secret father, and that the masked "A" killer is Archie, Angela's brother. This "A" team want revenge on those who played a role in Angela's death, the circumstances of which...

If anyone deserves a sitcom, it’s Jo Koy. The definition of a working comic, the stand-up comedian tours constantly, hits all the late-night shows, and pumps out special after special, selling out theaters all the while. And yet, Koy has never been able to break out of his (presumably quite lucrative) rut. All he needs is that one big crossover star vehicle, a la Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) or Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), right? Right??
That’s what Easter Sunday is clearly designed to be, and unfortunately, it doesn...

Jo Koy can be hilarious, riotously so at times. He has no trouble filling auditoriums with his spot-on standup act. Much of what makes him so funny are his observations about his Filipino American family: his aunts, his uncles, his cousins, his sisters and, most of all, his mom. Koy’s gift for deft comedy is too easily forgotten watching the well-intentioned but underwhelming “Easter Sunday,” his first starring vehicle.
Koy plays actor Joe Valencia. Living in Los Angeles, Joe is starting to feel he’s dancing on the razor’s edge between success or failure. He’s got an agent, portrayed by the movie’s director Jay Chandrasekhar. He’s got a beer commercial with a sticky tagline — “Let’s get this party started, baybay!” — that long ago became an albatross. Strangers in stores and family members quote it at him.

“A” new generation of PLLs emerged on Thursday with the premiere of HBO Max’s Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, and we’re definitely not in Rosewood anymore.
Staying true to its title, the premiere begins with a flashback to New York’s Eve 1999, the night of the original sin. A girl named Angela, whose cries for help are ignored by her partying peers, drops to her death at a warehouse rave. (Minor spoiler alert: It’s explained in Episode 3 that the actual “sin” in this case was that none of Angela’s supposed friends even bothered to call...

The long-awaited return to the Pretty Little Liars universe is nearly upon us.
Although Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin admits a connection to Rosewood, Millwood's story stands on its own.
Executive produced and written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and co-executive produced and written by Lindsay Calhoon Bring (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), the pedigree is a dark take on A's torment across two generations.
Twenty years ago, the blue-collar town of Millwood was torn apart by a series of tragic events, and the women at the core of that nightmare have daughters the same age now.
If they thought they had shed their mistakes and taken a brighter path into the future, Original Sin reveals that there is still a bill to pay, and it's coming due with new blood.
The former TV liars were not angels, but they weren't eager to get their hands dirty either. Our new liars lead...

At this point, it’s kind of difficult to say anything new or different about the concept of reboots, reimaginings, and revivals — especially when the particular intellectual property being rebooted, reimagined, or revived hasn’t been off the air that long. HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” is a revival, continuing the legacy established by the original series that said farewell less than a decade ago, and now, in the case of “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin”, we’re talking about a series based on something that premiered 12 years ago… and only just ended five years ago.
It’s difficult to imagine that audiences have even really even been given a chance to miss the original show for long enough before “Riverdale” creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring decided to bring it back in this “new” form.
Still, there’s no denying the nostalgia that comes with hearing the opening credits to “Original Sin,...

There's a new group of Pretty Little Liars in town. Five years after the Freeform series came to an end, "Pretty Little Liars" is being revived by HBO Max with a brand new cast. Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, the series, which is titled "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin," promises more suspense and horror than the original.
"We're such huge fans of what I. Marlene King and her iconic cast created, we knew that we had to treat the original series as #canon and do something different," Aguirre-Sacasa and Calhoon Bring said in a joint statement, per Deadline. "So we're leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements." "Roberto and Lindsay are expanding the 'Pretty Little Liars' universe with more murder, mysteries, and scandal, and we can't wait,...

Since breaking out of the gate with a modern Sci-Fi masterwork in 2009 with District 9, writer/director Neill Blomkamp has seemingly struggled to hit that same initial almighty high. Yet, in spite of some widely different readings, he remains a filmmaker with incredible vision and ambition.
From the social class gap depictions of Elysium, to the AI implications of Chappie, Blomkamp’s work always can be relied upon to ponder weighty and interesting themes within a grand aesthetic. However his latest lockdown shot film is something far more stripped back and lower in budget, but no less intriguing for it. Despite some devilish reviews from fans and critics alike, Neill Blomkamp’s Demonic is a distinctive, if flawed, offering in an overstuffed field that is far better than expected.

Previously announced cast members of the “Pretty Little Liars” reboot include Chandler Kinney, Bailee Madison, Maia Reficco, Malia Pyles, Zaria, Mallory Bechtel, Alex Aiono and Eric Johnson. The series is set in the present, 20 years after a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, a disparate group of teen girls — the new “Little Liars” — find themselves tormented by an unknown “Assailant” and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago, as well as their own.
Leal will play Sidney, Tabby’s (Kinney) single mother who works in real estate to provide for her daughter and Imogen (Madison), another girl in town. Leal’s previous credits include “Dreamgirls,...

If you ask actress Carly Pope what the scariest thing she’s done recently, her answers would include an improv audition, a Hallmark movie and the new sci-fi horror film “Demonic,” which opened in theaters August 20. While the idea of trying something for the first time can seem nerve-racking, Pope said her motto is: “Do it anyways and see what happens.”
The first-time horror actress told WrapWomen that while she “loved the idea of jumping into a new genre,” she was also anxious about what parts of herself would be unlocked. Especially when it’s a film about daughter who unleashes terrifying demons after entering the virtual mind of her serial killer mother. Luckily, director Neill Blomkamp created an environment on set that made Pope feel comfortable and confident in everything she did.

Once a sci-fi wunderkind, Neill Blomkamp’s now more likely known in many a film fan circle for pulling out of almost as many movies as he’s actually directed. After the runaway success of his Best Picture-nominated debut (and all-round instant sci-fi classic) District 9, the South African bobbed from giant tentpole to giant tentpole, never quite finding his footing. Now some ten years on, having flirted with everything from Alien 5 (Ridley Scott killed it) to RoboCop Returns (Blomkamp quit over scheduling problems), he’s turning his back on well-known IP altogether, to forge his own path.
What started with self-funded experimental outfit Oats Studios (their YouTube shorts are a fascinating watch) has now landed at the equally independent Demonic; a back-to-basics possession horror with plenty of Blomkamp’s unique brand of inventive sci-fi sprinkled amongst the usual jumps and bumps. When you give your horror movie the simple and uninspiring title of ‘Demonic’, you better be ready to do something big, something exciting! And if there’s any director that could do that with a horror movie, Neill Blomkamp might be the guy. I know his movies have divided opinion since his brillinat debut feature District 9 but Elysium and Chappie have both been full of originality and creativity so I was hoping he’d bring that into the horror genre.
There’s plenty of originality at least when it comes to the movies core concept and ideas. A woman unleashes demons and supernatural forces when she takes part in futuristic labortorary expertiments that enable her to talk to her her currently comatose mother. A mother she has not spoken to...

The director’s latest film – in which a daughter enters the virtual mind of her serial killer mother – is so-so compared to his earlier efforts
After the mega-budget blowouts of 2013’s Elysium (which had some tried-and-tested ideas rattling around inside it) and 2015’s Chappie (which had Die Antwoord), this so-so shocker finds mooted multiplex saviour Neill Blomkamp recalibrating his disc space and career prospects. Operating with TV-movie production values and nary a single familiar face among its 10-strong cast, it’s a small, manageable, patchily inspired genre piece that unpicks the fraught relationship between a daughter, her convict mother, and a medical tech firm instigating an altogether unhappy reunion.
Much of Demonic suggests a sometime “visionary director” who has turned to streaming-bound work-for-hire to make ends meet; it’s cautiously compiled, competent work-for-hire, but the wild swings and grand designs of this film-maker’s earlier output are sorely missed. It...

United Artists Releasing opens Flag Day, directed and starring Sean Penn, in a uneven specialty market where the Delta Variant spike has theaters in key cities requiring proof of vaccination, theaters are hard to book, and hits have been rare since the industry reopened.

Director Neill Blomkamp has given us a unique mixture of films, one great, one terrible and one right down the middle. District 9 was a sharp, socially conscious horror flick that achieved "instant classic" status. Elysium was an effective riff on class warfare. And Chappie lacked heart.
So where does Demonic rank among Blomkamp's oeuvre? The generic title would have you believe this is a generic movie, which it is. Despite moments of indelible craft, Demonic is closer to Chappie than District 9. The film is a mashup of demons, possessions, metaphors and sanatoriums that ends up being rather dull, uninspired.
The best thing the film has going for it is its heady concept, the idea that you can enter someone else's dreams through a virtual headset. The virtual world adds a kick to Blomkamp's script--the real-world portions can't help but feel flat by comparison, and you spend most the...

Twelve years ago, South African-Canadian filmmaker Neill Blomkamp burst on the scene with “District 9,” the rare sci-fi film that was appreciated in its time, landing four Oscar noms, including one for best picture. Now, Blomkamp is wading into horror territory with “Demonic,” which follows a woman named Carly (Carly Pope) who uses technology to delve into her troubled history with her mother — and begins to realize evil forces might have been at play. “Demonic” hits theaters and VOD on Aug. 20.
You shot this film last year at the height of the pandemic. Can you talk about where the idea came from

Although we weren’t crazy about Neill Blomkamp’s Demonic, the South African director remains one of the more exciting talents in genre filmmaking today. Between his cult-hit feature films (particularly 2009’s breakout District 9 and 2015’s unjustly maligned cyberpunk blockbuster Chappie) and the technically impressive shorts on his Oats Studios YouTube channel, Blomkamp has repeatedly proven himself to be an innovator on the cutting edge of visual technology with a pure-hearted love of science fiction and an irrepressibly chaotic sense of fun. His eye for artfully uncanny special-effects creations furthers his unifying motif of hyperreality, as his creations blend flesh with machine and realism with fantasy, the better to fully immerse us in his richly imagined worlds. That love of immersive CG has also drawn him to video games, with an open admiration for the medium still rare among filmmakers––an admiration he’s been able to act on,...

Carly Pope is known as an icon from her time playing Sam McPherson on the WB series Popular.
She’s premiering in Neil Blomkamp's new horror film Demonic on Friday, August 20th. It’s the first film Neil has done in six years, and the two have worked together before.
TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with her about her new movie and rise to fame working on Popular.
Hi Carly. Thanks for chatting with me. You’re known as an Icon from the WB series Popular. What was your favorite part of that series?
Wow. That is a very kind, very kind label to receive. Sam hated labels! Truly, though, I’m honored.
That show was groundbreaking in so many ways, and I love that so many people still love and remember it (when it’s not even streaming). I loved the blend of heart and humor in the show.

Neill Blomkamp’s new horror film “Demonic” seemingly has everything: a trauma subplot, an estranged mother and daughter relationship, a nightmare sequence with monsters, a group of Vatican soldiers performing exorcisms and VR scenes filmed using volumetric capture video technology.
The story follows a woman, Carly (Carly Pope), whose mom, Angela (Nathalie Boltt), is in a coma. When Carly was a teenager, Angela had some sort of a break and killed 21 people, resulting in a decades-long estrangement, but now, Carly gets recruited by two doctors (who turn out to be a Vatican special forces team of sorts), to reach out to her. The doctors, Michael (Michael J. Rogers) and Daniel (Terry Chen), hook her up to a device – and this is where the volumetric capture comes in – which lets her enter her mom’s subconscious and walk around in her mind amid all her memories. However, there’s a demon...

Back in the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s, what we used to call monster movies had simple concepts and catchy, explicit titles that mirrored them. “Dracula.” “The Werewolf.” “King Kong.” “Mothra vs. Godzilla.” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” “The Blob.” When you watch a movie like “Demonic,” you only wish it had that kind of tantalizing, wide-eyed simplicity.
This, however, is low-budget pretentious indie horror, written and directed by no less than Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”), and so it’s got to come with its own convoluted psychedelic metaphysic. In order for the main character, Carly (Carly Pope), to be traumatized in about four different ways at once (for that look!-you’re-getting-your-rental’s-worth feeling), she is summoned to the offices of Therapol, a corporate medical-imaging facility that turns out to be a front for the Vatican. There, creepy “physicians” hook her up to a...

Throughout his career, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has been known for his bold and unique takes in the realm of science fiction. For his latest project, Demonic, Blomkamp is traversing new territory in more ways than one, by crafting an unusual tale of demonic possession coupled with emerging technology.
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to briefly speak with Blomkamp about his experiences working on Demonic, and he chatted about his approach to the story, his desire to create something different than anything we’ve seen from him before, as well as the inspiration behind Demonic’s striking creature and reteaming with Carly Pope on this project as well.
Demonic will arrive in theaters and on VOD this Friday, August 20th, courtesy of IFC Midnight.
So great to speak with you today, Neill. I watch a lot of movies every year, and I always just want somebody to give me something different.

With his new film “Demonic,” writer-director Neill Blomkamp has done something he’s never done before: He’s made a feature film that’s almost completely pointless.
The man behind “District 9,” “Elysium,” and “Chappie” has never been particularly subtle about his allegories, whether the films are acclaimed or not. So far he’s used sci-fi trappings to explore the evils of apartheid and health care, and to address at least some of the bigger questions about artificial intelligence. They’re usually big swings, the sci-fi films of Neill Blomkamp, so it’s hard to begrudge him for going for a bunt this time.
But “Demonic” isn’t just a low-budget supernatural–sci-fi thriller; it’s also a shallow one, a boring one, a poorly conceived one — and the characters stink too. It’s a horror movie with no ideas and only half a scare. It’s a sci-fi movie...

Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi work finds its chief pleasures as a cinema of the hyperreal. Aliens, robots, and impossibly cool implements of destruction exist fifteen minutes into the future, covered in the grime and grit and chipped imperfection of used objects, in alternate worlds as beholden to the violence of material inequity as our own. Anderson Cooper (playing himself) reveals speculative history as breaking news coverage. The fantastically imaginary becomes physically palpable. Blomkamp’s chief aesthetic guideposts are visual media’s pinnacles of “you are there” immediacy: cinema verité, video games, documentary. His cinema is vividly externalized, rife with world-building, sprawling in scope, and rooted in a firm sense of the material.
Implication that Demonic may not play to his strengths comes with the opening scene. In an economically cut series of crawling, low-angle handheld shots, uncannily perfect symmetrical compositions, and other dream sequence clichés, a woman (Carly Pope) wanders...

Technology has always been the dominant creative force behind the films of Neill Blomkamp, a former special effects artist whose “what if Apartheid, but aliens?” metaphor “District 9” earned him a Best Picture nomination before he was 30, whose dopey Matt Damon vehicle “Elysium” took class warfare to intergalactic levels, and whose Twitter-famous “Chappie” — perhaps the best movie ever made about a psychotically obnoxious police robot being captured and reprogrammed by the South African rap group Die Antwoord — forever redefined people’s ability to identify Chappie.
And yet, despite those increasingly ridiculous examples, Blomkamp’s impetus to let digital tools drive his storytelling has never been more transparent or contrived than it is in his Doa new horror film “Demonic,” which leans on three sequences created with volumetric capture (described by Blomkamp as a kind of three-dimensional video system through which the actors are simultaneously recorded with 260 cameras and then...

So far so good on theaters remaining open despite changing CDC recommendations (wear your masks). It will be interesting to see what happens if things devolve further since there are a ton of big Hollywood titles coming this month. Unlike last month, however, most have reverted to the usual bland character sheets and collages, surely putting contractual obligations above creativity. Nature has apparently healed.
Thankfully, a few smaller titles from the boutique shingles hold onto the knowledge that attractive and unique is what turns heads. Some focus on typography, others photography, and the best embrace illustrative flourishes that really pop above the gloss. Sorry, The Suicide Squad and Free Guy. Be glad you didn’t really need the help anyway.

"She went on a homicidal rampage - this is your chance to ask her, 'why?'" IFC Midnight has unveiled the full official trailer for the horror Demonic, made by sci-fi filmmaker Neill Blomkamp working with some original horror concepts. He made this film quietly last year, taking friends and a small crew up into the Canadian forest during the pandemic summer. The only vague intro available: A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother & daughter are ruthlessly revealed. The movie stars Carly Pope, Terry Chen, Nathalie Boltt, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers. This is a much more coherent trailer than that thrilling first teaser, setting up the stakes involving this eerie simulation world she goes into to visit her mother in a coma. It seems to hearken back to VR horror films like eXistenZ or even The Lawnmower Man.

The story of 15-year-old Devi Vishwakumar, a Los Angeles teen reeling from her beloved father’s sudden death while trying to navigate all the usual boys/school/friendship mess of adolescence, deserves to continue long into the future. Oh. Golly. Here is the official trailer for Neill Blomkamp's deep dive into horror, his new film Demonic. From the director of District 9 and Elysium, a young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are revealed. The less we say the better but, nice! Carly Pope's character looks to be virtually descending into her mother's subconcious, for reasons unknown for now, and making contact with the demons in question. Whatever is going on in her mother's head then makes it out into the physical realm and then we cue the horror. Cannot wait to see this. Demonic will be in cinemas, On Demand and on digital on August...
