Joe Keery has found the role of a lifetime in Stephen Malkmus, the enigmatic and ambivalent frontman of seminal rock band Pavement. Like so many performers inspired by the particular charisma of a music icon, Keery has thrown himself into the role with zeal and commitment, studying countless hours of...

The State of the Race
Similar to two years ago, the current race for the Best Actor Oscar has four names that seem to have their nominations locked in, with that fifth nomination slot up for grabs.
The Venice premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” confirmed suspicions that Daniel Craig could be a major contender this year, but the real surprise from that same festival was just how much Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” and by virtue its lead Adrien Brody, really has a shot at becoming an Academy Awards frontrunner across categories.

Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burrough’s second novel, Queer, begins, shall we say, peculiarly. Sinéad O’Connor’s haunting cover of Nirvana’s “All Apologies” scores overhead shots of what we soon realize is Burroughs’s own writing space, every object alluding with cringey literalness to the Beat Generation author’s thorny mythos.
“Everyone is gay,” per “All Apologies,” and it quickly becomes clear that Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes are content to stay on the surface of that knotty lyric and plenty more besides. They would seem to think that plumbing depths is for snootily cultured queens. Queer prefers to oafishly stick, and not always unentertainingly so, to mincing façades, beginning with Daniel Craig’s performance as Burroughs avatar William Lee.
His bruiser face tarted up with dorky specs and his growly voice tending ever so slightly toward a lisp, Craig sashays his way around a fever-dream...

How lucky are we to be around at the same time that Luca Guadagnino is doing his thing? The Italian director has delivered some of the boldest and most uncompromising works of the last decade and change, one as recent as earlier this year. He's also gone even further and maintained an exceptionally keen eye for finding the stories worth telling in the first place. His latest, conceptualized during filming of "Challengers" and written by "Challengers" scribe Justin Kuritzkes, sets its sights on no less a figure than wildly influential novelist William S. Burroughs. Burroughs' life and overall body of work could never be contained in a single biopic (though many have tried), so "Queer" takes the next best approach: an adaptation of his unfinished short story of the same name, reimagined as an intimate epic that almost feels designed to perplex and provoke in equal measure.
The headlines all but write themselves.

Mubi has acquired “Queer,” Luca Guadagnino’s trippy adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novel that recently bowed in competition in Venice, in a multi-territory deal.
In another significant statement of intent, the fast-rising arthouse distributor, streamer and production company — whose festival acquisitions spree appears to still be on a major roll — picked up all rights to the buzzy feature, led by Daniel Craig, for the U.K./Ireland, Latin America, Mexico, Germany/Austria, Benelux, Spain, Canada, Turkey and India. It also acquired all rights excluding theatrical for Italy. A24 already bought the film for the U.S. The Veterans brokered the deal with Mubi.

Alex Ross Perry was approached to make a documentary about Pavement. There was a slight hitch: The band kinda sorta did not want a documentary made about them. Or rather, they didn’t want one of those things where fans of the band talk about how amazing the quintet were, in between archival concert footage and Behind the Music-style interviews and cute animated transitions and all that jazz. The group had announced their first show in a decade, set to happen in 2020 — only to have the pandemic shut the world down.

Alex Ross Perry’s 2019 backstage rock drama Her Smell is bookmarked by cutaways to faux-documentary video footage, capturing its fictional 1990s alternative group in moments of camera-friendly bliss. Placed next to the emotional apocalypse that comprises most of the rest of the film’s runtime, the supposedly “real” Behind the Music-style footage can’t help but feel like an obfuscation of the band’s true story.
Perry avoids such pitfalls with Pavements, a docu-fiction about indie rock titans Pavement. The band’s legendary status, quickly achieved in the early ’90s indie underground, has always felt somewhat at odds with the sense of shaggy self-effacement that their critics often mistook for a conscious lack of effort. Wisely anticipating that the traditional rock-doc format would be a poor fit for such a group, Perry has crafted a far less easily classifiable tribute.

Francis Ford Coppola may just be one of the most well-known and well regarded filmmakers of our time. From The Godfather (1972) to Apocalypse Now (1979), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) to The Conversation (1974), his superb filmography still renders him a must-watch for many, even this far along in his career. Expected to be his final film, Megalopolis is as close to a passion project as it comes; self-financed and workshopped since the late 70s, it’s a film that Coppola has had his heart set on making throughout his career. Described as a Roman epic, the story follows genius artist Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) who seeks to leap the City of New Rome into a utopian, idealistic future, while his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite daughter Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the Mayor’s daughter,...

We can start our week extending thanks to Arte France Cinéma, who’ve given two of France’s greatest directors the cash flow to support immediate endeavors: per Cineuropa, Claire Denis and Arnaud Desplechin can soon begin production on new features. The former’s is Le Cri des Gardes (The Cry of the Guards), which sounds an awful lot like The Fence, a project she detailed in March. Matt Dillon, Riley Keough, and Denis mainstay Isaach de Bankolé will star in the feature, described in these very Denis-like terms:
“As project supervisor Horn is welcoming his young partner Léone into the hut he shares with young and impetuous engineer Cal, a black man called Alboury appears outside the railings surrounding their quarters. Inflexible, hovering like a ghost in the darkness, he is determined to stay there until they return the body of his brother to him, who was killed on the site.

Megalopolis has been generating headlines for years. First, it was about how legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola had to self-finance his epic sci-fi movie because no studio was willing to touch it.
Then, we heard the director had reportedly fired the majority of the Megalopolis' visual effects team during production, prompting other crew members, including the entire art department, to exit due to what they called an "unstable filming environment."
More recently, Coppola has been accused of acting inappropriately on set, though it's unclear whether there's any truth to the allegations.
Then there was the trailer with AI-generated quotes from "critics" and Megalopolis' 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes which suggested Coppola's supposed magnum opus was anything but the masterpiece he'd promised.
With the movie now playing in theaters, regular moviegoers have chimed in...and wholly rejected Megalopolis. Boasting a D+ CinemaScore, it ranks among the worst-rated wide releases ever and scores lower than any superhero movie.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s new film “The Wild Robot” is booting up with a better-than-expected $34 million opening weekend.
Director Chris Sanders’ animated film was originally projected to make between $24 million to $30 million in its opening weekend. The family friendly movie launched with $11.3 million on Friday and will take the box office crown from Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Tim Burton’s horror comedy has reigned over the charts for the past three weeks and is on track for second place with $16 million in its fourth week of release.
Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” is finally hitting theaters this weekend after premiering over the summer at the Cannes Film Festival. However, it’s on track to make $4.6 million in its opening weekend, less than initial projections of $5 million to $7 million. It’s made $1.84 million so far from 1,854 North American theaters. The film carries a $120 million budget, which was mostly self-financed by Coppola.

Francis Ford Coppola’s next epic is here, and he’s amassed a pretty huge cast to bring it to life. And odds are, you’re going to recognize quite a few of those faces.
Now in theaters, “Megalopolis” is a modern retelling of the Roman Empire, starring Adam Driver as the man who’s trying to build it. Cesar Catalina (Driver) has a vision for a utopia built with a brand new element that he discovered and won a Nobel prize for. But not everyone wants to see him succeed in doing so.
It’s a pretty thick plot, so we won’t pick that apart here. For now, we’re just going to help you place some of those faces on screen.

Director Francis Ford Coppola reputedly spent 40 years making Megalopolis, raising the $120m budget by selling some of his vineyards. Sadly, both time and money could probably have been better spent elsewhere, because the end result falls squarely in the “interesting failure” camp, rather than being the epic masterpiece he undoubtedly envisioned. Still, it’s not without its moments.
The film takes place in New Rome, effectively an alternate version of New York City. Adam Driver plays genius architect Cesar Catilina, who can seemingly halt the flow of time and who has invented a miracle building material known as Megalon, with which he plans to construct a futuristic cityscape.

“The Wild Robot,” Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s latest family-friendly, animated adventure, has made $1.95 million in Thursday previews at the box office so far.
Director Chris Sanders’ movie, about a lost robot on a planet overrun by wildlife, is on track to make between $24 million to $30 million in its opening weekend. That should be enough to claim the top slot from Warner Bros.’ spooky sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which has been the No. 1 movie for the past three weeks. Tim Burton’s film should take second place in its frame week of release, with an estimated $13 million to $15 million this weekend. Last week’s newcomer, Paramount’s animated origin story “Transformers One,” will have to settle for third place, with a projected $12 million to $14 million after opening in second place last weekend.
“The Wild Robot” stars Lupita Nyong’o as the titular automaton, who is named Rozzum unit 7134 but better known as Roz.

In moviemaking, ambition and indulgence often go hand-in-hand. And that can be a double-edged sword. Case in point: legendary writer/director Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis.
Set in the fictional city of New Rome, Megalopolis is the story of two political rivals. One is the current mayor, Frank Cicero, who wants to preserve the way of life of the people of his city. The other is a visionary architect named Cesar Catalina (Adam Driver from Marriage Story) who has a more utopian vision for the future of the city. In between them is Cicero’s daughter and Cesar’s lover, Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel from Game of Thrones), who is forced to mediate the power struggle.

Plot: In a futuristic metropolis named New Rome, the city’s mayor, Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), battles an idealistic architect named Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), who wants to create a sustainable utopia.
Review: One of the most unique things about Francis Ford Coppola as a director is the fact that he’s probably the only one I can think of who’s made at least four outright masterpieces and probably an equal number of disasters. For every Godfather, there’s a One from the Heart, but Coppola, to his credit, has never allowed critics or audiences to dictate the movies he makes, and for better or worse, this is exactly the film he wanted. Whether or not anyone else will understand or appreciate what he’s doing is another question. I must admit that even though I can find merit in almost all of his work, Megalopolis escaped me.

After their critically acclaimed and audience-favorite romance Challengers earlier this year, writer Justin Kuritzkes and director Luca Guadagnino have re-teamed for Queer, and it couldn’t be more different. Surreal, funny, and most of all sexy, Queer challenges the audience in ways that will almost certainly ensure it is divisive, but are incredibly ambitious swings nonetheless.
Queer Review
Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch), Queer follows Lee, an American expatriate living in Mexico City, as he searches for connection and a drug that will unlock the power of telepathy. This is certainly Guadagnino’s most out-there film yet, sharing more resemblance with something like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas than the Italian auteur’s filmography.
Those familiar with Burroughs’s work will know his dense, surreal writing style. The most notable filmmaker to adapt his work thus far has been David Cronenberg, whose trippy...

James Bond. Benoit Blanc. Joe Bang. These characters have become synonymous with Daniel Craig’s career. Now, Craig adds William Lee, a drug-addicted gay American expat, to that list in Luca Guadagnino’s sexually charged and fantastical love story, “Queer.” The film made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, where Guadagnino and co-star Drew Starkey participated in a post-screening Q&a.
Craig’s sensitive and transformative portrayal of a emotionally fractured man could be his greatest performance yet. It might even land him at the center of the Oscar race for best actor — if the more conservative Academy voters aren’t squeamish about the film’s sexually graphic scenes or put off by its non-traditional narrative.

His name is Lee … Bill Lee. A man slouching toward middle age and suffering the malaise of someone who’s seen it all, heard it all, shot it all into his veins, he’s embraced the dissolute life of an ex-pat. Sporting an endless supply of filthy linen suits and ever-present fedoras, Lee cruises the bars looking to score sex and junk in Mexico. Sweaty afternoons are spent buzzed on cheap tequila and bantering with his fellow social outcasts. Evenings are spent in the company of willing young men and needles.

TV veteran Sandra Oh — you know, the beloved actress from Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve — has been nominated for an Emmy 14 times but it took a little known Hulu movie called Quiz Lady for her to finally get a much-deserved attagirl by the TV Academy.
Sadly, Oh wasn’t there to receive her award at the Creative Arts Emmys Sunday for producing Quiz Lady. But her fellow co-star/producer Awkwafina as well as the movie’s writer/producer Jen D’Angelo were astonished to learn backstage that Oh has never won the golden girl — until now. They were straight-up gobsmacked when a reporter told them.
No one had the chance to check in with Oh before collecting the final Emmy of the night. Apparently, Oh is in Canada so she missed how the film — about a game-show-obsessed woman and her estranged sister work together to help cover their mother’s...

While attending the movie’s Toronto International Film Festival world premiere on Friday, the Last Showgirl actress explained how her role in the Gia Coppola movie reminded her of late mother Carrie Fisher and grandmother Debbie Reynolds.

She continued, “When Gia sent me the script for the first time, I was so excited to get to be involved in it because it reminded me so much of my mom and grandma. At the end of the Toronto Film Festival world premiere of her new film, The Last Showgirl, Canadian-born Pamela Anderson told the packed crowd, “This is the role I have been waiting for my entire career” before going on to joke that it’s the first “coherent” film script she was ever given. I can safely predict there will be more where this came from because Anderson is sensational as an aging Vegas showgirl, and the movie from director Gia Coppola — who says she has always wanted to make a film in Las Vegas — is smart, touching, funny, honest and wise. And if you think it is going the exploitational route like, say, Paul Verhoeven did in his Nc-17-rated Showgirls, think again.
This look at the lives of the infamous Vegas showgirls barely has any nudity and is character-driven, more akin to the underrated 1970 drama The Grasshopper with Jacqueline Bisset...

Utopia has picked up the U.S. rights to Pavements, director Alex Ross Perry’s musical portrait of the 1990s al-rock band a day after a world premiere in Venice earlier this week.
“One of our favorite filmmakers, one of our favorite bands, Pavements joining Utopia is simply a dream come true. The band’s iconic status has only continued to blossom out of the ’90s and Alex has crafted a film that transcends documentary and questions what the format can be in a surprising and novel way,” Utopia head of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said in a statement on Friday.
Pavements will also have a North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. The musical biopic tracks the influential rock band as they prepare for a 2022 reunion tour in the prism of their earlier accomplishments.
“This multifaceted meta-movie is at once documentary, musical comedy, faux biopic and real museum exhibition.

Lionsgate quickly seeks to rectify their controversial marketing blunder from a couple of weeks ago. The upcoming epic fantasy film from Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis, is certainly building an interesting buzz. Coppola, a filmmaker with an outside-the-box vision, made a film that studios couldn’t figure out how to promote to a mainstream audience. Lionsgate got the distribution deal and attempted to stay ahead of the negative word-of-mouth by releasing a trailer that featured alleged harsh quotes from critics when Coppola’s beloved past films had come out.
The studio was quickly called out for manifesting these quotes used in the trailer an pulled it from their official outlets. Lionsgate would also issue an apology. “Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis,” said a Lionsgate spokesperson. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process.

“Megalopolis” just might be the film with the biggest hype and mystery this fall season…
After debuting at Cannes, the self-funded feature from auteur Francis Ford Coppola has had quite the media frenzy. First, the film was plagued by rumors of a chaotic set. Then, Coppola was accused of kissing extras against their will. Coppola has denied both allegations.
And then the first trailer that was released to promote the film included fake quotes from iconic critics seemingly created by an AI chatbot. Distributor Lionsgate issued an apology, telling IndieWire, “we screwed up.”
Now, we’re getting a new and fully sanctioned look at “Megalopolis.”
Adam Driver leads the film as a pseudo alter-ego of writer/director Coppola, playing an architect who envisions saving his corrupt city and transforming the metropolis into a utopia. Meanwhile, the city’s mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) clashes with Driver’s character, just as the mayor...

"My plan is a city that people can dream about." "What about those standing in your way?" Lionsgate + American Zoetrope have unveiled the second official trailer for Megalopolis (which will also be opening in IMAX), the controversial and critically panned new Coppola movie opening in theaters this fall. Megalopolis is director Francis Ford Coppola's latest ambitious project, a $100M+ feature that he has been trying to make ever since he first conceived the film in 1979. Is it worth the wait? The basic setup is: an architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. The architect's plan is opposed by the mayor, who has other ideas for the city. This premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to mostly mixed and negative reviews (read mine here). The movie's enormous ensemble cast inclfudes Adam Driver as Caesar, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza,...

A new trailer for “Megalopolis” has arrived, and this time, they aren’t using any fake quotes from critics.
It comes in the wake of Lionsgate recalling its previous trailer, after the footage featured apparent quotes from negative reviews of previous Coppola films heralded as masterpieces, like “Apocalypse Now” and “The Godfather.” But as it turned out, those harsh words — used in an apparent attempt to turn the divided response to “Megalopolis” from a bug into a feature — weren’t real.
“Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for ‘Megalopolis,’” a Lionsgate spokesman told TheWrap after the company pulled the trailer down. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”
You can watch the new footage in the video below.
A vision lives only with the bravery to move it forward.

Omar Apollo is sure to set pulses racing with his big screen debut as he reveals details about his appearance in Luca Guadagnino‘s Queer.
Ahead of the movie’s Venice Film Festival premiere, the Grammy Award nominee revealed the lengths he went to in order to prepare for his intimate scene with Daniel Craig, whom he praised as being a “vulnerable” scene partner.
“I had to get on the soup diet,” he told Interview. “Luca did not tell me to lose weight, but when you’re about to have a sex scene with Daniel Craig, you’re like, ‘Oh, dude, I can’t be looking off.’ I was at 200 pounds, because I’m 6’5.
“It’s around where I should be, honestly. But I got down to 181 when the movie came. I lost 20 pounds because I read in the script that my character had a flat brown stomach. I was like,...
