Spoilers for all of "Orange is the New Black" ahead.
"Orange is the New Black" is among the most important shows of the 2010s. It was not only one of the first series to establish the binge model as a viable release format — for better or worse — but it was also groundbreaking thanks to its diverse cast and the massive range of storylines it juggled at any given time. At its best, the show was riveting, funny, heartfelt, and bold. At its worst, it was still a fun time.
Most notably, few shows have ever felt so distinct from season to season. Season 1 was the fun fish-out-of-water comedy centering firmly around Piper (Taylor Schilling). Season 2 was a riveting prison drama centered largely on the Black inmates like Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Poussey (Samira Wiley), and Suzanne (Uzo Aduba). Season 3 was a surprisingly relaxed, lighthearted period, while season 4 took a brutal turn in the other direction,...

More than four years have gone by since it was announced that director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were re-teaming for a sequel to their cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books. Last year, Øvredal confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was still in the works and a script has been written, the project had just been slowed down by the pandemic, the making of his Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and the Hollywood strikes. We heard in December that writers/producers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman were fighting to get the sequel made… but now they have given a disappointing update to the folks at Collider: the sequel has stalled.

After four successful seasons, Queen Latifah's Robyn McCall is not slowing down now in the exciting CBS show, The Equalizer.
It can't be easy to reimagine a role that the legendary Denzel Washington once played, but Queen Latifah does it with all the grace and strength of someone who has been in the television industry for over thirty years.
She has amassed over one hundred award nominations and thirty wins in her career, including two Critics' Choice awards, two Golden Globes, a Grammy, an Emmy, a People's Choice award, and three Screen Actors Guild awards.
Wouldn't you give her her own show?!
Queen Latifah is film and television royalty who continues to remind us of why she's an industry staple.
She is versatile enough to easily step into any genre, from action and drama to comedic and romantic.

As has been the case in The Equalizer from the beginning, what Robyn (Queen Latifah) does and keeping that secret affects not just her, but those around her. And sure, Vi (Lorraine Toussaint) and Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes) know, but Vi’s girlfriend, Trish (Gloria Rueben), remains in the dark—and that’s a source of conflict in that relationship right now. But given the scope of what Robyn does as she helps people using her skills as a former CIA operative, and that that’s something that she would then have to keep secret, there is the question of whether Trish would want to know. When TV Insider asked Gloria Reuben just that question, she confirmed she would. “I think honesty is key, and I think that she feels that way for sure. If secrets need to be kept in order to protect or honor certain parameters of someone’s extended family,...

The Equalizer has drawn very good ratings for CBS. Still, it's also co-produced by an outside studio (Universal Television), which is a negative in the economics of network television these days. Robyn McCall will continue righting wrongs for another season.
CBS has ordered a fifth season of The Equalizer, its drama series starring Queen Latifah (who also executive produces) as McCall, a former CIA operative turned freelance problem solver for people who have nowhere else to turn. The show is a reimagining of the 1985-89 series of the same name and not connected to the Denzel Washington-led film franchise that’s also inspired by the original series.
With the renewal, The Equalizer will pass the original series in the number of seasons it has aired (though not yet in episode count — the 1980s series ran for 88 episodes, and the current show will end this season with 56).
With the pickup of The Equalizer, CBS has only one scripted series — NCIS: Hawai’i — awaiting word on its future. The network plans to announce its 2023-24 schedule on May 2.

“The Equalizer” has been renewed for Season 5 at CBS, Variety has learned.

We look forward to another dynamic season.”
With the renewal, the only current CBS series awaiting word of its fate is “NCIS: Hawai’i.” The network has renewed much of its scripted lineup already, including recent pickups for “Elsbeth” and the “FBI” franchise. CBS recently announced it was canceling both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas,” while shows like “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “Blue Bloods” and “Young Sheldon” are coming to an end.
Per CBS, “The Equalizer” is currently averaging over 10 million viewers per episode in Live+35 multiplatform viewing. The show is based on the 1980s CBS series of the same name.

CBS has picked up a fifth season of drama The Equalizer, starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah, for 2024-25.
As Deadline reported last week, the renewal was fully expected, with the delay related to lead studio Universal Television negotiating a deal with Queen Latifah. It recently closed, paving the way to a renewal.
So far, The Equalizer‘s seasons had been capped at 18 episodes, which is something top talent often request when signing on for a broadcast drama series. There was an effort in the Queen Latifah negotiation to increase the number to 20 or more but I hear Season 5 will again consist of 18 episodes.
After Elsbeth renewed and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas canceled last week, NCIS: Hawai’i remains the only CBS scripted series in limbo.

As Deadline reported last week, Hawai’i’s future is said to be the subject of tough business conversations, with a partial Season 4 of 13 or fewer episodes still a possibility. It could be a final chapter for the show, the first installment in the NCIS franchise with a female lead.
The Equalizer has been a strong performer for CBS, currently ranking as the #8 most watched among all non-sports broadcast programs, averaging 7.89M linear viewers (in Nielsen most current data) and over 10 million viewers in Live+35 multi-platform viewership. It also is the #1 entertainment program among African Americans.

Wilson and Adam Glass, Dana Owens (Queen Latifah), John Davis, John Fox, Debra Martin Chase, Richard Lindheim (co-creator of the original series), Shakim Compere, Joseph C. Wilson and Loretha Jones are executive producers. The Equalizer airs on CBS and is available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.

“The Equalizer, led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another dynamic season.”
Co-produced by CBS Studios, The Equalizer is one of four drama series Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, makes for CBS, along with the three FBIs, all of which were also recently renewed, the flagship for three seasons.

It was almost preordained that the Q&a that followed The Hollywood Reporter’s special screening of The Color Purple would be a joyous affair — the camaraderie between stars Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks and the film’s producer, Oprah Winfrey, has been on display this entire press run.
But the THR Presents special event, introduced by director Blitz Bazawule, was even more celebratory because it came on the day that both Barrino and Brooks received Golden Globe nominations for their roles as Celie and Sofia, respectively, for the film.
At one point, when Henson clasped the hands of an emotional Barrino and the two exchanged heartfelt words onstage, Brooks chimed in for the audience (which included Zazie Beetz and Lorraine Toussaint): “This is all we’ve been doin’, y’all,”
“Every time,” Winfrey added. “It turns into a church service!”

Nearly three and a half years have gone by since it was announced that director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were re-teaming for a sequel to their cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books. A few months ago, Øvredal confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was still in the works and a script has been written, the project had just been slowed down by the pandemic, the making of his Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and this year’s Hollywood strikes. But now Collider has shared a quote from the producers that indicates there might be some kind of trouble behind the scenes…
The screenplay for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 has been written by the first film’s writers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman, working from a story crafted by del Toro.

When looking at how “Nimona” would handle the romantic storyline between Ballister (Riz Ahmed) and Ambrosius (Eugene Lee Yang), director Nick Bruno decided to go further into it than is done in the graphic novel. “The thing that we got most about the graphic novel was that theme that there’s people who are othered, who are pushed to the shadows and this movie helps celebrate those who should be in the light in their own kingdom,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Bruno and his team championed the story until Annapurna and Netflix helped rescue it in 2022. “We were there to help support and raise those stories and hopefully create a film that the little kid versions of those people really could have used. And so we were unapologetically saying, ‘No. We’re going to continue to tell this story.

Adapting the 2015 graphic novel from Nd Stevenson, Nimona was originally a production of Blue Sky Studios before Disney’s acquisition of Fox resulted in Blue Sky’s closure and the cancellation of this film. The project was thankfully revived by Annapurna Pictures, with Netflix providing worldwide distribution, allowing for the release of one of 2023’s best films.
Within a medieval-futuristic kingdom, Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed) is about to make history as the first commoner to become a knight. He is a beacon of hope for those not of noble blood, establishing that “anyone can be a hero”, which makes his crowning glory even more horrifying when he is framed for killing the queen.

Nimona is only Eugene Lee Yang’s second-ever voice acting gig, but it’s a “beautiful” role, he says, and one already for the history books.
The actor, who is best known for his work with YouTubers and media production group The Try Guys, is the voice behind Ambrosius Goldenloin, the presumed hero of the animated Netflix film. Released on Friday and based on an award-winning graphic novel by the movie’s co-producer Nd Stevenson, Nimona follows the titular punky shapeshifter, voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz, as she teams with an outcast knight, Riz Ahmed’s Ballister Boldheart, after he is accused of plotting and then killing Queen Valerin (Lorraine Toussaint).
Yang plays Goldenloin, a knight of royal lineage who finds himself cutting off his boyfriend Ballister’s arm while trying to save his ruler. Eventually, he also agrees to track and capture Ballister at the behest of the Director...

Four excellent new movies are waiting to whet your Fourth of July weekend appetite. At least two are family-friendly affairs, but all of them have a joyful spirit that’s apt for holiday viewing.
The contender to watch this week: “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret“
Kelly Fremon Craig‘s charming adaptation of Judy Blume‘s YA classic did modest business in theaters, so it deserves a second life on VOD. Craig, who established her teen movie bona fides with 2016’s “The Edge of Seventeen,” perfectly captures the book’s shrewd spirit. She cast “Ant-Man” actress Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret Simon, an 11-year-old forced to move to a new town where she and her friends endure the anxieties of puberty. Craig’s acclaimed script could make her a Best Adapted Screenplay contender, and the supporting cast — particularly Rachel McAdams and Benny Safdie as Margaret’s lovingly scattered parents — are equally worthy Oscar candidates.

The new animated film premiering on Netflix starts exactly the way you’d think a fairy tale should. The first words we hear, after all, are, “A long, long time ago, a kingdom lived in peace.”
But don’t be fooled. Nimona, based on Nd Stevenson’s acclaimed graphic novel, is about as far from an ordinary fairy tale as animated films get. Cheekily irreverent and hilariously subversive, it’s a consistent delight.
After that lulling introduction, the action shifts forward one thousand years, with the story set in a futuristic medieval kingdom that boasts skyscrapers along with its ancient fortresses. The story begins with a cheesy news broadcast hosted by two over-enthusiastic anchors (Indya Moore, RuPaul) covering the kingdom’s “Night to Knight Knights,” a reality show-style competition. Among the competitors is the insecure, one-armed Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), who’s encouraged in his efforts by his boyfriend and fellow knight-in-training,...

Just four weeks ago, the Netflix streaming service unveiled a teaser trailer for the animated adventure film Nimona – and since we’re a little over two weeks from the film’s June 30th release date, it makes sense that a full trailer for the movie has now arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Nimona had a bumpy ride on its way to Netflix. The project was scrapped by Blue Sky Studios when it was near completion, then canceled by Fox… but by the end of this month, it will finally be out in the world.
Inspired by Nd Stevenson‘s (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) webcomic-turned-graphic novel, Nimona was directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor. Here’s the synopsis: When Ballister Boldheart, a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit,...

"The world kicks you around sometimes... But together, we can kick it back!" Netflix has revealed the full official trailer for Nimona, an action adventure thriller made by filmmakers Nick Bruno & Troy Quane (of Spies in Disguise). Originally a production of Blue Sky Studios, Disney dumped the project when they shut down the studio. Annapurna Pictures later revived it, with Bruno & Quane taking over directing duties, and Dneg handling the animation. When a knight in a futuristic medieval world is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona -- a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature he's sworn to destroy. It's an epic tale about finding friendship in the most surprising situations and accepting yourself & others for who they are. Starring the voices of Chloë Grace Moretz & Riz Ahmed, along with Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy,...

Chloë Grace Moretz is ready to save Riz Ahmed in animated form.
The two actors lead the long-awaited queer graphic novel adaptation “Nimona,” now being released by Netflix after previously being scrapped by Walt Disney Co. after the company allegedly took issue with the now-defunct Blue Sky Studios’ inclusion of a same-sex kiss.
The official synopsis for “Nimona” reads: When Ballister Boldheart (Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem — who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona’s the best (or technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two...

Disney Branded Television and Disney Europe, Middle East and Africa (Emea) looks set to reveal a slew of new titles at France’s Annecy Animation Festival.
Apart from “Disney Junior’s Ariel,” a new series inspired by “The Little Mermaid,” pre-school adventure series “Magicampers” has also been greenlit.
Set at a day camp for magical creatures – its protagonists, Darly and Loomis, are half-pig and half-Pegasus, and half-donkey and half-unicorn – and created by Obie Scott Wade, it’s set to premiere globally on Disney+ and Disney Junior next year.
“We instantly fell in love with this ensemble of unique hybrid characters, who each combine something magical and something ordinary within themselves,” said Orion Ross, vice president of animation for The Walt Disney Company Emea.
“Their adventures in this lush fantastical world are wildly fun and also explore what it means to grow up and discover yourself.”

“Nimona” took a twisty road to the big screen. But now it’s ready for its debut at Annecy Animation Film Festival. Pictured above is an exclusive still from the anticipated fantasy adventure.
Based on the graphic novel by N.D. Stevenson, the feature follows Ballister Boldheart, a knight in a futuristic medieval world who is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature he’s sworn to destroy.
“Nimona” started out at 20th Century Fox’s animation shingle Blue Sky Studios, which optioned the novel in 2015. Nick Bruno and Troy Quane were brought onboard in 2020 when creative direction of the film changed. The film continued production apace even after Disney completed its $71.9 billion merger with 20th Century Fox in 2019.
Production continued during the pandemic as well, but then in 2021, Disney shuttered Blue Sky.

CBS’s The Equalizer has ended on another cliffhanger. Season 3 of the Queen Latifah-led action-drama wrapped up on May 21 with an intense episode that saw Robyn McCall and her team in a dramatic (and unresolved) showdown with one of her former CIA colleagues.
Meanwhile, the stakes were nearly as high for Robyn’s daughter Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes) and Aunt Vi (Lorraine Toussaint), who headed out to see a movie and ended up in a hostage situation when a robber pulled a gun on an unsuspecting store clerk. Showbiz Cheat Sheet chatted with Hayes about what went down in “Eye for an Eye” and what it might mean for her character heading into season 4.
