Barry and Social Worker Dolores Barry, Matthew first appeared on stage at the tender age of 8 in Roundabout Theatre's "A Piece of Fog" At 13, he starred in the CBS Comedy "Ivan the Terrible" and at 15 was cast opposite Jill Clayburgh in Bernardo Bertolucci's "Luna" - After moving to Los Angeles and appearing in film and television, Matthew made the move to casting, working with award winner Victoria Thomas on "Indecent Proposal" "Crimson Tide" "Con Air" "Mars Attacks" and many more. - He answered an ad in the show business trade journal "Variety" placed by Bernardo Bertolucci's casting agent for the role in Luna (1979). He was selected as one of ten finalists from several dozen youthful aspirants to be interviewed by Bertolucci. After his first reading of a scene, the competition was down to three. He was in the semifinals in a screen test made with Jill Clayburgh, and, after a second test, emerged as the winner of the role.
