- Bearden served with the United States Navy in WWII. He suffered a fractured skull and knee when his ship, the USS Helena, was sunk in the South Pacific. He was discharged with a plate in his skull and a pin in his knee. In1948, his rookie year, he pitched the Indians to victory over the Red Sox in a one-game playoff for the AL pennant. Subsequently, he won Game 3 of the 1948 World Series with the Boston Braves, and got the save in the decisive Game 6.
