Friday Night Lights followed the exploits of a high school football team in Texas, using the sports drama format to cover a wide range of social issues including poverty, racism, and drug addiction. The story was based on H. G. Bissinger's book, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, and it was created by the director of the 2004 film.
The show received wide critical acclaim, including being honored by the American Film Institute three times, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards and one Creative Arts Emmy Award, and many nominations from organizations such as the NAACP Image Awards and the Television Critics Association Awards.
From a production standpoint, one of the more interesting elements of Friday Night Lights was how green most of the cast was. Of the ten main and recurring cast members listed here, half were either entirely new to the industry or at least...

"Friday Night Lights" holds a unique spot in America's collective pop cultural memory. Those who haven't seen the show (which is based loosely on H.G. Bissinger's book of the same name) typically don't seem to be in a hurry to watch it, even though the drama is consistently included in rankings of the best TV shows of all time. It doesn't matter that "Friday Night Lights" won 3 Emmys, that it features great performances from stars like Connie Britton, Jesse Plemons, and Michael B. Jordan, or that it includes an incredible episode written by the future creator of "Interview with the Vampire." It is, to many of the people who haven't seen it, just a show about football.
Except it's not. Fans of the Texas-set show will tell you that though the sport is technically at the center of the series, it's about pretty much everything but football, including but not limited to: parenting,...

“Accepting death isn’t surrender. Flowers are only flowers because they fall.”
This is Toda Mariko in the penultimate episode of Shōgun, FX’s epic adaptation of James Clavell’s novel about a civil war in feudal Japan. Mariko says this because (spoiler alert) she knows that she is the flower who is about to fall, not only accepting her impending demise, but welcoming it.

Practically since his career began, LeBron James has been not merely a great basketball player but a media industry generating a seemingly endless array of products.
The latest example is this new Peacock original film based on his 2009 memoir co-written with Buzz Bissinger (Friday Night Lights), recounting the story of his early years and friendship with his high school teammates known as the “Fab Four,” later expanded to become the “Fab Five.” The story was already told in the 2008 documentary More Than a Game, but that won’t stop the Goat’s fans from wanting to see this lovingly rendered adaptation that covers all the early career highlights, albeit sometimes in sanitized form.
The story begins with James (Marquis “Mookie” Cook, a top-ranked amateur basketball player making an impressive screen debut) playing in a youth league in Akron, Ohio, along with his three best friends: Lil Dru (Caleb McLaughlin, Stranger...

Gary Gaines, the Texas high school football coach featured in Buzz Bissinger’s 1990 nonfiction book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team and a Dream and portrayed in the 2004 film version by Billy Bob Thornton, died Monday in Lubbock, Texas, of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 73.
His death was announced by his family to the Associated Press.
Bissinger spent the 1988 football season with the Odessa Permian High School team to chronicle the phenomenon of Texas football culture. The book was a warts-and-all account of the season, depicting racism, educational inequalities and what would come to be known as toxic masculinity. Gaines, though being depicted as the book’s hero, later disavowed it, saying he felt betrayed by Bissinger’s depiction of Texans as racist.

The NBA champion and his creative team, led by CEO Maverick Carter, have called Warner Bros. Entertainment home since 2015. That deal expired last July, according to three people familiar with the terms, though the AT&T-owned shop is still in the running to keep James on the lot. Stronger helmer David Gordon Green is negotiating to direct a new film for Universal Pictures based on Friday Night Lights, the 2004 film based on Buzz Bissinger non-fiction book that captured the glory, heart, sweat, heartbreak and pressure that goes into small-town America’s obsession with high school football each fall Friday night.

One of the greatest gifts any documentary can get is direct contribution from everyone involved in the story on display. “What Carter Lost,” the latest film in the Espn “30 for 30” docuseries, gives a thorough look at a tumultuous few months in late 1989, as one Dallas high school ascended to the heights of Texas football – before some players lost nearly everything.
For casual or non-football fans, director Adam Hootnick sets up the on-field supremacy of the Carter High School squad. Lauded here by at least one NFL hall-of-famer as the greatest high school football team in history, this group of Carter students came to wider cultural attention when their 1989 playoff run collided head-on with Odessa Permian, the team profiled in “Friday Night Lights,” Buzz Bissinger’s book that begat the film and later TV series.
