Watching a Quentin Dupieux film is always an adventure – albeit a quirky, absurd, and existential adventure. Most of the time you have absolutely no idea what’s going on, but for some reason you keep watching in an almost hypnotic state as your eyes are inexplicably glued to the screen. That’s exactly how I watched Rubber, taking in every visually confusing segment one by one which eventually created a mind-blowing final revelation come the epic conclusion (think of it as a really f*cked up jigsaw puzzle), and that’s the exact same experience one can expect from Wrong.
On the surface, Wrong is about a man named Dolph (Jack Plotnick) whose dog, Paul, has gone missing. There are no clues, no signs, and no information as to where Paul could be, but Dolph is deeply disturbed by the disappearance of his dog. As more time goes by and Dolph becomes increasingly more worried,...

Note: Rob Hunter’s review originally ran during Fantastic Fest 2012, but we’re re-running it now as the film opens in limited theatrical release. Weirdness has its place in cinema. It can be a fun element in everything from comedies to horror films or used to add a lighter texture to serious topics, but the one thing it can’t be is the only thing. Quentin Dupieux‘s first feature, the innocuously titled Rubber, is one of the most absurd films of the past several years. Its core plot follows a tire that comes to life and begins exploding peoples’ heads via telekinesis, but it’s also an extremely smart commentary on consumer and audience expectations. The goofiness just makes it funnier. Dupieux’s follow-up is equally weird with random character dialogue and actions that make zero sense, visual gags that go unexplained and plot story threads that go nowhere in particular. A...

Wrong
Directed by Quentin Dupieux
Written by Quentin Dupieux
USA, 2012
The new film Wrong, from writer-director Quentin Dupieux, is less a movie and more a feature-length experiment in provocative trolling. If you find the film deliberately, obnoxiously unpleasant, well, you’re just a fuddy-duddy. You can’t accept the intentionally odd tone as being a charming bit of anti-comedy. Disliking the film is playing into Dupieux’s plan, it seems, which makes the whole project even more bothersome. Even leaving aside its awkward yet pushy attitude, Wrong is perilously close to being a parody of an experimental, faux-Lynchian arthouse film, full of elliptical, meaningless character motivations and dialogue, amounting to nothing.
Jack Slotnick plays Dolph, a shiftless man who wakes up one morning and discovers that his beloved dog, Paul, is missing. His neighbor Mike (Regan Burns), offers no help and seems more willing to get into a verbal confrontation...

Something is a bit off in Dolph's (Jack Plotnick) world when he wakes up at 7:60am and realizes that his best friend Paul, his dog, is missing. Paul never takes off on his own, so Dolph is afraid that something horrible has happened to him. A strange encounter with Dolph's neighbor Mike (Regan Burns) -- who seems unable to admit that he jogs -- rattles his nerves more, but that is only the tip of the iceberg of unhinged absurdity. When Dolph calls the Jesus Organic Pizza, things grow increasingly weirder. Purportedly to distract himself from Paul's disappearance, Dolph begins to pose seemingly unimportant questions regarding the company's logo (leaving the more obvious questions regarding Jesus' relationship to pizza, or how pizza can be classified as organic, for a slightly more sensical universe) to the overly helpful person (Alexis Dziena) on the other end of the telephone line. "The rabbit does indeed symbolize speed,...

Wrong

USA, 2012
An aptronym, or charactonym, is when a person’s profession or career is aptly expressed by their strangely befitting name. For example, if your name is Anita Baker and you become bread-monger, or if your name is Dan Druff and you become a barber, then this constitutes an aptronym. So parents, if you want your baby boy to grow up and make audience dividing, debate inducing, genre defying, convention ignoring, style important, cult becoming movies, then, by all means, name him Quentin; French provocateur Quentin Dupieux was, and his films, including his latest, Wrong, are.
In Wrong, Dolph Springer (Jack Plotnick) wakes up at 7:60 am to find that his dog, Paul (Kuma), is missing. After a short debate with his neighbour Mike (Regan Burns) about jogging and morning fashion, a quick call to a newly opened pizza joint to discuss their...

Wrong
Directed by Quentin Dupieux
Written by Quentin Dupieux
USA, 2012
Written and directed by Quentin Dupieux (Rubber), Wrong initially intrigues in its refusal to conform to convention, but tirelessly wears out its viewer throughout all of its banal aimlessness. The film’s world becomes predictably baffling and increasingly dull as we embark on a bizarre and unrewarding trek into the absurd and existential. The surreal has never felt so muted, so useless.
It was perhaps a huge disservice to not have seen Dupieux’s Rubber before diving into his latest effort. Certainly, there are those tickled and perhaps even moved by what Dupieux represents as a filmmaker, but the guy feels oddly too imaginative for his own good. Not only that, but his vision fails to conjure up any type of creative appeal that we haven’t seen before. Wrong is both familiar and foreign, as to override all expectations,...

Who says dogs can't blog?
Disney Channel has announced a new live-action, multicamera series, "Dog With A Blog," starring -- you guessed it -- a dog. Adopted by his family in hopes of helping two feuding stepbrothers get along, the four-legged pup named Stan soon proves he has more to him than meets the eye: Stan can talk and write!
The show stars G. Hannelius ("Good Luck Charlie"), Blake Michael ("Lemonade Mouth"), Francesca Capaldi ("A.N.T. Farm"), Beth Littleford ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), Regan Burns ("Wizards of Waverly Place") and Stephen Full ("I'm in the Band").
"With our track record of discovering young talent who are 'triple threats,' we launched a nationwide search," Adam Bonnett, senior vice president of Disney Channel, said. "And our reward is that we found the one dog who could talk, blog and do his own stunts. Working with kids and animals has never been more fun!

Title: Wrong Director: Quentin Dupieux Cast: Jack Plotnick, Eric Judor, Alexis Dziena, Steve Little, William Fichtner and Regan Burns Being absurd is almost always taken as a lark or gimmick when applied in movies. It automatically alienates audiences and leaves them uneasy with how the story is delivered. No one ever takes it seriously, but when done right, it can involve audiences, while at the same time giving them a good, heartfelt narrative. In the new film from French experimental filmmaker, Quentin Dupieux, “Wrong” embraces its absurdist nature and never apologizes for telling a story the way the director sees fit. It follows the story of Dolph Springer, a man...

"Wow, this is such a surprise. Mainly because I'm a comedian and, as everybody knows, comedy is not acting. Comedy is very easy. Anybody can do it. All you need to do is not try very hard, make fun of real acting, and boom: comedy. I'd like to thank my mom because she told me I'd never amount to anything. I'd like to thank my dad because he was an alcoholic and he gave me my motivation to get into show business. I'd like to thank my agent because he's in the audience and he'll never get me another job if I don't. Free Tibet." -- Sean Cullen Toronto and Los Angeles "First of all, to the other four actors who were also nominated: nice try. Maybe this will be your wake-up call to try a little harder. Second, I would like to mention a few folks whom I would not like to thank.

MSN, Reveille launch Web 'Debate'
NEW YORK -- MSN and Reveille on Monday debuted The Big Debate, the first original series to emerge from their partnership, which was announced in May.
The daily show, described as a "pop culture version of 'Crossfire, ' " is the first of 10 shows that the Microsoft-owned Web portal and Reveille, the producers of The Office and Ugly Betty among other shows, will produce together.
Debate, sponsored exclusively by Cingular, will run between two and three minutes and will feature a moderator and two debaters -- comics and improv veterans who will discuss contentious pop culture topics and take questions and comments from viewers, who are encouraged to send them to the site throughout the day.
"This really fits into our broader entertainment strategy of continuing to invest in great entertainment content that people can actually engage and participate in," said Rob Bennett, general manager of entertainment and video service at MSN. "It's not just focused on a short video segment, but there's actually a deeper experience where people can actually get in there and argue it up themselves."
The first show will focus on the Golden Globe Awards, broadcast Monday on NBC, with comedians Regan Burns, who hosted Spike TV's Oblivious, and Whitney Cummings, who has appeared on Punk'd and Best Week Ever, tackling the subjects.
