Born in the north of Spain, he studied film at the Art School of the University of Barcelona (Bellas Artes) and he later won one scholarship from the Spanish government to study film directing at the USA, where he wrote and directed his medium-feature film Hotel Oasis (1995). This medium-feature film got the most important awards at all the Spanish film festivals and finally gave him the Best Director Award from the Plataforma de Nuevos Realizadores de España.
Juan Calvo developed projects for film and television and wrote his first feature film screenplay Di que sí (2004) which was selected by the European Film Academy for the European Pitch Point at the Berlin Film Festival. Later he directed this feature film, produced by Sony Pictures, and got one of the most important box offices of the year in Spain. After that, Juan Calvo wrote and directed the tv-movie El partido (2006), for which he got the Best Picture Award at the Television Academy National Awards.
In recent years, Juan Calvo has been directing tv-series for the most important tv channels in Spain.
