For Your Eyes Only, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this week, was a transitional James Bond film. Released in 1981, this 12th entry in the long-running series, and Roger Moore’s fifth outing as the man in the tuxedo, was deliberately styled as a return to the 007’s roots after he went to space in the over-the-top Moonraker (1979): the one where series producers did their best to compete with Star Wars. By contrast Eyes seemed stripped down and also marked the debut of John Glen in the director’s chair—a position he would hold for a series-most five entries. He received that promotion after working on several previous installments as a second unit director.
But Eyes was also meant, at one point, to usher in the most important change in any Bond movie: the introduction of a new actor in the role of 007.

With the question of who's playing James Bond in James Bond 25 unresolved, we look back at the casting conundrums 007 has faced before.
Since 1962, fewer men have played James Bond than have walked on the moon. Despite the relatively long turnaround of the role, the subject of who might follow in the footsteps of Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig in the future has fuelled many column inches and tabloid splashes.
It feels as if speculation about the seventh 007 in Eon Productions' long-lived spy franchise has been at fever pitch since this time last year, when Craig was doing the promotional rounds for Spectre and commented that he would rather “slash [his] wrists” than play Bond again. It's only after a year of constant reports on the subject that his far more optimistic comments at last weekend's New Yorker Festival...

Ron Moody in Mel Brooks' 'The Twelve Chairs.' The 'Doctor Who' that never was. Ron Moody: 'Doctor Who' was biggest professional regret (See previous post: "Ron Moody: From Charles Dickens to Walt Disney – But No Harry Potter.") Ron Moody was featured in about 50 television productions, both in the U.K. and the U.S., from the late 1950s to 2012. These included guest roles in the series The Avengers, Gunsmoke, Starsky and Hutch, Hart to Hart, and Murder She Wrote, in addition to leads in the short-lived U.S. sitcom Nobody's Perfect (1980), starring Moody as a Scotland Yard detective transferred to the San Francisco Police Department, and in the British fantasy Into the Labyrinth (1981), with Moody as the noble sorcerer Rothgo. Throughout the decades, he could also be spotted in several TV movies, among them:[1] David Copperfield (1969). As Uriah Heep in this disappointing all-star showcase distributed theatrically in some countries.

We pay tribute to Brian Clemens, a screenwriter and producer whose work lit up 1970s cult TV and beyond...
Brian Clemens, who died earlier this week aged 83, was a highly respected screenwriter and producer both for TV and Film. He will chiefly be remembered for his work on The Avengers, The New Avengers and The Professionals but his credits were numerous and encapsulated a real golden age of cult, escapist television from the 1950s onwards.
Clemens was born in Croydon in July 1931. He spent his National Service as a Weapons Training Instructor. After spending time as a copywriter, he established himself as a scriptwriter - sometimes using the pseudonym "Tony O'Grady" - O'Grady being his mother's maiden name. He received his first commission from the BBC at the age of 24 - a thriller called Valid For Single Journey Only. He went on to write for many of the big TV...

To mark the release of The Professionals Mk1 on 31st March, we’ve been given 1 copy to give away on Blu-ray.
Bodie and Doyle need little by way of introduction, but if the series had at all escaped you since its debut in 1977, their boss George Cowley, head of CI5 couldn’t put it more succinctly than his opening gambit: “…anarchy, acts of terror, crimes against the public. To combat it I’ve got special men experts from the army, the police, from every service. These are The Professionals”. Featuring the perfect ensemble cast of Martin Shaw, Gordon Jackson (completely against type here) and the much-missed Lewis Collins, the series ran for 57 action-packed episodes and made an immediate impact on British and then international audiences, which has been sustained for 35 years. Painstakingly restored from the camera-original negatives, the series could have been made yesterday. No matter how many times you have seen The Professionals,...

Actor Martin Shaw talks about working with Polanski, the dumbing-down of his profession, and the death of his fellow Professional Lewis Collins
How did you become interested in acting?
It started at school. I didn't have a healthy attitude towards education: it took me a long time to work out that I was there for me, not for my teachers. There were only two teachers I could really respond to – one taught English, the other drama. When we were doing Shakespeare, it seemed crystal-clear.
What was your big breakthrough?
In 1968, I appeared at the Royal Court in the first major revival of Look Back in Anger (1). Then I starred in several other plays there. Roman Polanski saw one and offered me the role of Banquo in his film of Macbeth. Everything took off from there.
What have you sacrificed for your art?

Lewis Collins's greatest disappointment was his failure to get the James Bond role after Roger Moore
A tribute to Lewis Collins, the Mojo musician who became famous in the late 1970s as hit man Bodie in The Professionals, reveals that his greatest disappointment was not his decision to be a hairdresser rather than join the Beatles as a drummer but his failure to get the James Bond role after Roger Moore. Too aggressive, it was said, but really – since they chose cleft-chinned toff Timothy Dalton instead – they probably meant he wasn't smooth enough. Yet, as Ian Fleming said when he wrote to the Guardian in 1958 to defend his creation against encouraging a cult of luxury (eg choosing a brand of cigarette for its exclusivity rather than its taste), his James Bond was meant to be a blank sheet, an unobtrusive figure to whom exotic things happened. The personal style...

Actor who was both heart-throb and hardman as Bodie in The Professionals
In a 1980 episode of the hit British cop show The Professionals, an ill-advised villain tries to threaten the ex-mercenary William Bodie with his snarling doberman pinscher. After a brief altercation, Bodie, all sang-froid and minimally curled lip, inquires: "Would your little dog like to chew this electric fire? Or maybe you'll just leave."
This kind of butch badinage, along with rugged good looks, helped make Lewis Collins, who played Bodie in all 57 of the show's episodes from 1977 and 1983, and who has died aged 67 after suffering from cancer, into a household name. During that time he formed one half of Britain's answer to Starsky and Hutch, a crime-fighting duo called Bodie and Doyle who worked for a shadowy criminal intelligence agency, CI5, headed by Gordon Jackson's strait-laced George Cowley. At its height, The Professionals was watched by 12 million viewers a week,...

In the 70s and early 80s most little boys in the UK wanted to be wisecracking Bodie from The Professionals. One writer remembers being in awe of Collins' brooding action hero
I wanted to be Lewis Collins when I was a boy. I'd kick open the kitchen door with a water pistol in my hand, shouting at my mum to: "Get down on the ground, hands where I can see them!" This must have been quite annoying. She was probably wearing yellow Marigolds, for a start, which wasn't very villainous.
Two decades later, I got to interview Collins. It was only 15 minutes on the phone but I was still in awe. I'd been told he was a bit moody and didn't like talking about The Professionals any more, both of which proved untrue. He was charm personified, only too happy to reminisce. He had a mischievous sense of humour, a...

Lewis Collins, the popular British actor who played men of action, has died at from cancer at age 67. Although his fame was largely relegated to his native England, he maintained a loyal fan following primarily attributed to his role in the long-running UK TV series The Professionals which is still being presented in re-runs on ITV4. Collins also had roles in other popular British TV series including Z Cars, The New Avengers and The Cuckoo Waltz. He also starred in producer Euan Lloyd's 1982 feature film Who Dares Wins about a daring Sas operation. The film, released in the United States as The Final Option, was a personal favorite of President Ronald Reagan, who requested a private screening at the White House. Collins was touted by many as a suitable candidate for playing James Bond. In fact, Collins screen tested for the role of 007 but failed to convince legendary producer...

He blazed across our TV screens as one part of The Professionals team in the 1970s, but Lewis Collins was more than just Bodie. So it’s sad to report that the star of stage and screen, has died at the age of 67.Collins, who was born in Cheshire, didn’t immediately embrace acting as a career. He started his working life as a hairdresser and played with various music acts including The Mojos before deciding to try his luck treading the boards. He trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and then segued into rep theatre in Chesterfield and Glasgow before a touring session with Prospect Theatre Company. His first TV break was in Z-Cars in 1974, which kicked off a run of guest star parts in a variety of other series. But in 1977, he got the role that he’d be best remembered for: tough nut copper Bodie in The Professionals.

Released on Blu-ray this week, Arrow Video’s long-awaited release of The Wild Geese and Who Dares Wins see the format debut of two very “British” war movies staring some very familiar faces, including Roger Moore, Richard Burton, Lewis Collins and Richard Widmark; and thanks to Arrow Video we have three Blu-rays of each to giveaway!
Who Dares Wins
A fanatical group of anti-nuclear radicals, calling themselves ‘The People’s Lobby’, is plotting a bloody outrage on British soil and, having already fatally lost their undercover operative at a violent protest, the secret services call on the aid of the Sas.
Captain Peter Skellen (Collins) is apparently thrown out of the service for gross misconduct and is soon recruited by The People’s Lobby. But Skellen’s dismissal is a front to enable him to infiltrate the terrorist group. He seduces Frankie Leith (Judy Davis) and she quickly admits him to the inner circle.

Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler, Jason Statham, Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman are the professionals! You have no idea what we’re talking about? Well, guess what, it looks that UK television show from the 70s, titled The Professionals is getting a remake!
Or, if you prefer, it’s getting turned into a movie. And what a movie that will be with this kind of cast on board? Judge yourself!
Ok, ok, nothing is confirmed at this moment, but it sounds interesting to know that Lionsgate UK is reportedly eyeing Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler and Jason Statham to play the secret agents Bodie and Doyle, while Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman are being eyed to play their boss.
So, yes, that (unfortunately) means some of them will get the part, and no, they’re (unfortunately) not all going to be in the movie, but you must admit that it will be a difficult decision indeed!

Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman are considered possibles as boss George Cowley.
Lionsgate UK announced the project yesterday, saying that they felt, “there was an opportunity for a bigger British action film" and that, “the ambition is to make a powerful commercial movie with the best of British talent”.
The original series starred Lewis Collins as Bodie, Martin Shaw as Doyle and Gordon Jackson as George Cowley. It chronicled the adventures of Britain’s Criminal Intelligence 5 as they handled cases too tough for the police.

1970s cops Bodie and Doyle to come back to life as Lionsgate announces plans make an action movie of The Professionals
It was a simpler time when bubble perms and Ford Capris were to be aspired to. They were sexy and macho because we saw them on The Professionals and, frankly, we knew no better. Now, 28 years later, Bodie and Doyle, along with bad-tempered boss George Cowley, are coming back.
Film company Lionsgate said it has acquired the rights to the series, which ran for five adrenaline-fuelled seasons on ITV, and plans to begin shooting a film version later this year.
Zygi Kamasa, the chief executive, admitted he can hum the theme tune on demand. "I was a big fan," he said. "We all grew up with it in the 70s so the idea of bringing it back for the big screen is perfect. There aren't many British TV shows...

The Professionals, the cult-classic British TV series, is getting a big-budget feature film remake from Lionsgate UK. Production is scheduled to begin this fall on the action series about secret agents created by Brian Clemens (The Avengers). The show never made it to the Us audiences, but helped make local stars of actors Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins, who played the agents.
The film's producer, Richard Whelan , is currently looking for a director. Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler and Jason Statham are being courted by Lonsgate UK to play secret agents Bodie and Doyle, with Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman on their list to play their boss. The film will serve as an origin story, "showing how ex-Spec Ops mercenary Bodie and counter-terrorism detective Doyle unite to work for covert UK security unit CI5."

Updated: Deadline have a follow-up on this earlier story claiming producer Richard Whelan is now in L.A. trying to lockdown a cast for the remake with the obvious & usual bunch of names said to be wanted;
Brit actors Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler and Jason Statham are cited (no word on whether they are up for Bodie or Doyle), with vets Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman apparently on the wishlist to play their boss, who was Scottish in the show. The movie will be an origin story depicting how the duo came to work for the CI5.
Statham is probably favourite to end up with one of the roles as he just made Lionsgate UK’s second film to date Blitz, that’s out May 6th, and he is Britain’s box office action star answer to Bruce Willis after all.
As we said below, no director is attached after Neil Marshall (The Descent,...

Shooting expected to begin later this year on film version of cult 70s detective show that starred Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins
The nostalgic trend for cult classic television shows resurfacing on the big screen looks set to continue with a big screen remake of late 70s favourite The Professionals.
Studio Lionsgate has acquired the rights to produce a film version of the adventures of Bodie and Doyle, the style-conscious, crime-fighting vanguard of the fictional CI5 agency.
The original series starred Martin Shaw as Doyle, a hot-headed police detective, and Lewis Collins as ruthless former Sas sergeant and mercenary Bodie. Running for 57 episodes on ITV between 1977 and 1983, it offered a six-year showcase for bubble perms and polo neck jumpers.
Lionsgate said the film would take up the story of Bodie and Doyle's first CI5 mission together. Zygi Kamasa, the studio's UK chief executive, said: "This production will combine the wit...

Lionsgate U.K. has secured the rights to produce a film version of classic 1970's British crime action series "The Professionals" says The Hollywood Reporter.
The hard-hitting action series followed CI5, a law enforcement department allowed to use any (and invariably illegal) means to solve serious crimes that didn't fall under the purview of the secret service or military.
Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins played the two best agents - the hotheaded but compassionate ex-detective constable Doyle, and a patient but ruthless ex-sas mercenary named Bodie. Together they tackled terrorists, hitmen, racist groups and espionage suspects.
The film version will be an origin story for the characters - how Bodie and Doyle met and came to work for CI5. Previously Neil Marshall ("The Descent," "Doomsday") was linked to direct the project but that no longer seems to be the case.
A writer is currently working on the script and shooting...

The UK arm of Lionsgate will start pre-production on its big-budget remake of cult 1970s British TV series The Professionals this fall. The action series about secret agents was a hit across Europe and in Australia but never made it to the U.S. The series was hatched by The Avengers creator Brian Clemens and made local stars of actors Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins, who played the agents. Gordon Jackson -- best known as the butler in Upstairs Downstairs -- played their dour Scottish boss. Producer Richard Whelan is now in Los Angeles trying to lock down a director. Lionsgate UK will court Tom Hardy, Gerard Butler and Jason Statham to play secret agents Bodie and Doyle, with Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman on their list to play their boss. Lionsgate UK CEO Zygi Kamasa acknowledges The Professionals is an unknown quantity in brand-happy Hollywood. He said the success...

Here’s a TV programme I’m sure my dad watched religiously which I know next to nothing about other than the crazy haircuts!
The Professionals was a TV series which spanned for five seasons between the years 1977 and 1983. It starred Gordon Jackson, Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins and at its peak, pulled in millions of viewers with even the re-runs in the late 90s attracting over over million views on the now deceased TV channel, Granada. The show was created to mimic Us rivals like Starkey and Hutch and had a rather memorable opening soundtrack which I’ve placed below in a clip.
This press release announces the news that Lionsgate UK and Eight Wonder pictures will produce the cinematic version and we’ll obviously keep you up to date with casting and release dates etc.
Here’s a clip from the original series… you’ll see what I mean about the haircuts!

UK director Neil Marshall ("Centurion") is developing a big screen adaptation of the 1977 British TV series "The Professionals".
"They deal with anti-terrorism, assassinations, political intrigue," said Marshall.
The original crime-action drama series produced by Avengers Mk1 Productions and London Weekend Television aired on the ITV network from 1977 to 1983. 57 episodes were produced, starring actors Martin Shaw, Lewis Collins and Gordon Jackson as agents of 'CI5', a law enforcement department, instructed by the Home Secretary to use any means, dealing with crimes of a serious nature that go beyond the capacity of the police.
Created by Brian Clemens of "The Avengers" TV series, Clemens and Albert Fennell were executive producers, with Laurie Johnson providing theme music. Sidney Hayers produced the first series in 1977, and Raymond Menmuir the remainder.
Led by 'George Cowley', CI5 is known for using unconventional and sometimes illegal methods to bust criminals, assigning agents 'Ray Doyle'...

Neil Marshall has made some pretty good flicks. Dog Soldiers is one of the coolest werewolf movies ever made and The Descent was pretty cool. (I never saw Doomsday) I've been hearing nothing but good things about his new movie Centurion starring that hot Olga chick from Hitman and Quantum of Solace. Now Neil has a another new project he wants to get into. I'm telling you, the dude is a total professional. Here's more from Empire Online: In addition to the Sam Raimi-produced 3D splatter pic Burst, he’s attached to a feature adaptation of classic Brit TV series The Professionals. “It’s going to be a hard-hitting action movie,” says Marshall, “I always loved the show. It has one of the greatest theme tunes ever and a really great central premise. I just thought: this is going to make a great movie.” The ’70s series saw professional...

Neil Marshall (The Descent, Centurion) has – in an interview with Empire – revealed that he is to direct a update of classic 70’s British TV cop drama The Professionals.
The original series was one of the most iconic and popular shows on UK television in the 70’s, and followed the adventures of Bodie and Doyle (played by Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw), two members of CI5, a government agency who were tasked with using Any means necessary to solve crimes – a pervue that often saw them skirting closely on the fringes of legality.
According to Marshall, the new iteration will be both a contemporary take on the series, whilst remaining faithful to everything that made The Professionals great:
They deal with anti-terrorism, assassinations, political intrigue. The slogan, or kind of the tagline for the film, is ‘Fight fire with fire’ and that was their whole thing… Primarily it’s going to be an exciting movie,...

Neil Marshall is setting his sights on bringing his trademark splatter action skills to a big-screen movie version of the 1970s British TV show “The Professionals”, says Empire. The original starred Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw Government spooks who take on bad guys that the Government can’t officially touch. What, never heard of “The Professions”?
