New Delhi, Aug 16 (Ians) Modern day parenting pressures and expectations are leading to the death knell for children enjoying spontaneous play, according to a new study.
While parents have always felt some responsibility for their children’s development, the heightened intensity of parenting in recent years now means parents are expected to spend more time exhaustively watching, noticing and responding to their children’s desires and behaviours.
This, according to researchers from the University of Essex in the UK, is leaving less time for children to play independently where they learn for themselves the risks and dangers of outdoor play.
The study, published in the journal Sociology of Health & Illness, said that parents are worried that lack of spontaneous play means their children are not as developed and well-rounded as they could be, coupled with the fact children’s play is increasingly more sedentary due to technology.

Did Republic’s serial-makers lose their marbles? This is an endurance test of a thriller, with 12 chapters that refuse to advance a story beyond the same repetitive ambushes and fistfights. It’s got monsters in the form of giant crawfish bred to… well, bred for almost no reason at all. With Phyllis Coates and Myron Healey. I tell you, watching this feels like watching an endless loop. But hey, it’s quite handsomely filmed!

New Delhi, Sep 22: There are not enough meaty roles for character artists, but Vipin Sharma, first noticed for playing a authoritative father in "Taare Zameen Par", has added a variety to his oeuvre and says his motto is to do roles that impart some message.
"I don't want to do mindless cinema. I want to do something that has a message. My character should convey a message to the society," Vipin, last seen in "John Day" as a police officer, told Ians in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.
"Having said that, I understand that all the movies cannot have a message, but then again, I don't want to do something that doesn't.

‘Grand Masti’ has done the unthinkable. Though it was always expected that the film would open well, for it to sustain in such an excellent manner right through the weekdays has ended up surprising one and all. Suddenly, from being a clean Hit – actually make it Superhit – already, talks are veering towards whether it would go on to touch the 100 crore mark and turn out to be a Blockbuster, what with 67 crores already coming in a matter of one week!
While one waits to see if that happens (it actually has a good chance to do that now), the fact remains that there are number of records that have already been broken and would further be broken in days to come. First and foremost it is the fastest grossing adult film ever, what with 50 crores coming in record time. Secondly, it has recorded the highest first week collections ever for an adult film.

Censorial diktats are getting more and more unpredictable by the week. Last week Rishi Kapoor was baffled and stupefied when the same Hindi expletive 'bhenc..d' which he used liberally in Nikhil Advani's D-Day was wiped out of Shuddh Desi Romance. This week our honourable censor board does even better in its impressive track record of unpredictability. While it allows the extremely brutal violence in John Day including gruesome scenes of Randeep Hooda biting off his adversary's tongue, it has for the first time necessitated the statutory warning against smoking all through the film. That's right. We see the familiar small-print no-smoking warning on the right hand bottom of the screen, throughout the playing-time of John Day in every frame. This warning usually comes when a character is seen smoking on screen. Not so in John Day. Here we are warned about the pitfalls of smoking even when no one is smoking.

This is no place for the weak. This world as we know it. And this film, as we discover with the thrill of chancing upon an unexpected little gem.
Inspired from a Spanish film, is it? I really don’t give a fig where writer-director Ahishor Solomon got the raw material for this gripping cat-and-mouse tale. Does the kitchen where the food on the table originates really mean anything? What counts is the quotient of curiosity and suspense simulated by the script. And there, John Day ranks very high.
Not for a while have we seen a film so steeped in despair, so swathed in anxiety, so audaciously draped in despair and yet it engages our senses without miring the plot in morbidity.
The story, let me tell you, is not for the squeamish. The two main characters are constantly haunted by their irrevocably tragic parts. Naseeruddin Shah and Randeep Hooda...

For an adult comedy, Grand Masti is all set to embark on a good start for itself. The film benefits from a terrific recall value that Masti as a series boasts of. Moreover, the entire promotional campaign has been bang on target, hence finding its target audience on it’s way. While this also means that children and to an extent family audience are out of picture for this Indra Kumar directed affair, the fact also remains that the film would see the biggest ever opening for the director who had started his career with family flicks like Dil, Beta and Raja.
The film is plagued though by the stay order in Punjab and Haryana on charges of vulgarity. However as it happens with most films, this one too is expected to sail through. As things stand today, the film should take 60%-70% opening for itself, which would ensure that...

In a move intended to damage a forthcoming movie's prospects, it has been reported in a section of the press that John Day is ripped off from a Spanish film called Box 507. A charge stoutly denied by director Ahishor Solomon. The report also states that the film's two principal actors Naseeruddin Shah and Randeep Hooda have decided to boycott the film on discovering its unoriginal content. However, sources close to the film say neither of the two actors has any intention of staying away from the promotions. Says one of the film's core team members angrily, "You don't disown your child just because someone tells you he has been naughty in class. It's so stupid to expect actors of Naseer Saab and Randeep's maturity to fall prey to rumour-mongering." Naseer in fact tells me he wasn't aware of the Spanish film that John Day is supposed to have copied. "I...

Mumbai, Sep 1: Filmmaker Ahishor Solomon, who is debuting with "John Day" as a director, says Naseeruddin Shah's character in the film is inspired by his own life.
"Naseer saab's character is of a simple guy, who is very loyal and fears god. He believes in his own rules, but the tough time he is going through in life has shattered his beliefs. And I think his character is an inspiration from my own self," Solomon said in a statement.
"While I was writing the script, I was going through a very tough time. I had started hating myself and was broken emotionally. I believe every writer gives something of his own personality.

Ahisor says,”My film’s casting is unusual and interesting with Naseeruddin Shah and Randeep Hooda. Who would not want to see the two powerhouse actors in a movie together. Also in the film are some elements not shown or explored in other movies so far.” One would be quite curious to find out those elements.

Just because of the fact that we had collaborated earlier on A Wednesday isn’t a reason good enough for him to do another film with me. If the script of John Day wouldn’t have excited him, he would have still turned me away.

Mumbai, Aug 16: Randeep Hooda's next "John Day" is a thriller laced with conspiracies and betrayal and the actor confesses to having experienced such sentiments in real life too.
