Exclusive: C. Thomas Howell (Obliterated) and Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) have been cast opposite Ryan Phillippe and Amélie Hoeferle in the feature One Mile and its sequel, One More Mile, from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Paramount’s Republic Pictures.
Adam Davidson is directing the movies, which will be filmed simultaneously. Production is slated to begin Sept. 9 on Vancouver Island.
In One Mile and its sequel — written by John Hlavin based with rewrites by Tj Brady and Rasheed Newson — when an estranged father, Danny (Phillippe), and daughter, Alex (Hoeferle), go off for college tours, they get more than they bargained for when they get lost and stumble across a hostile, off-the-grid community.
Howell plays Stanley Dixon, the patriarch of the Dixon family. This charismatic leader is quite a bit more dangerous than the rest of his clan and will do anything to protect the future of his family line.

Exclusive: NBC earlier today announced that its sci-fi drama La Brea has been renewed for a third season. I have learned that the pickup is for six episodes and that it was influenced by the possibility of a writers and/or directors and actors strike, with this likely being the show’s final chapter. Filming is slated to begin in March in Australia.
With the current WGA contract expiring May 1 and the DGA and SAG-AFTRA contracts up June 30, a potential work stoppage could impact the start of production on the new broadcast season, leaving the networks without fresh episodes of scripted series for the first few weeks of the fall.
Possibly with that in mind, I hear NBC approached the cast of La Brea about doing a short third season. Because the series regulars have a 10-episode minimum guarantee (meaning that they have to be paid at least 10 episodic fees...

NBC’s time-hopping drama La Brea will continue into the future.
The network has picked up a third season of the sci-fi series from creator and showrunner David Appelbaum. The early renewal for La Brea on Tuesday comes a few hours before the series begins the back half of its 14-episode second season.
The series is averaging about 5.37 million viewers per episode (including a week of Nielsen-measured delayed viewing, but not including streaming) in season two, along with a 0.6 rating (equivalent to about 783,000 people) in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49. Those figures are down from 7.43 million and 0.9 for season one, when La Brea was the top new drama of 2021-22 in the 18-49 demo.

Amazon Prime has ordered a finance and economy-themed docuseries from Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, and NPR business journalist Adam Davidson.
The untitled series, which doesn’t have a premiere date, will be hosted by Kal Penn.
Penn, an actor and former White House Associate Director of Public Engagement, will take viewers around the world to meet the geniuses, madmen and hucksters who make the decisions — and investments — that change our lives. From cryptocurrency and money laundering to death and corruption, the series will explore how money, greed and power affect our hyper-connected world.

Kal Penn is going to solve the world economy — maybe.
Penn will star in a new documentary, as yet untitled, about the global economy for Amazon, to be produced by Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Adam Davidson (co-founder of NPR’s “Planet Money”).
The new docuseries will offer insight into the economy and its comedic eccentricities, all through a sardonic lens.
“Look, I’m terrible at math and really good at sophomoric humor, so the idea that we can explore economics around the world by visiting places like a dildo factory in California piqued my interest,” said Penn. “To have an opportunity to explore the world while we combine the serious with the bizarre with Adam and Will is super exciting.”

No “Bull,” CBS wants you to know that the freshman Michael Weatherly series is actually the No. 1 new show of the year in total viewers, over NBC’s lauded “This Is Us.”
“We congratulate them on their success, but we like winning,” CBS senior exec VP Kelly Kahl said. He also pointed out that even CBS’ “Blue Bloods” has a larger audience than any other drama on the other networks, except “This Is Us.”
“The Big Bang Theory” is the “Wayne Gretzky of comedy,” he noted, arguing that no other half-hour comes close in total viewers, which is why they’re big on spinoff entry “Young Sheldon.” The show was recently renewed for two more seasons, a negotiation that Moonves characterized as amicable.
He also said he “hoped” that the show will continue even beyond that. “We’ll do these two years and we’re not going to just lay down,...
