Created by Joe Murtagh, a BAFTA Award nominee for the 2019 film “Calm With Horses,” Showtime’s “The Woman in the Wall” opens in the dreary fictional town of Kilkinure, Ireland, in 2015. As Clare Harner’s infamous poem “Immortality” echoes in the background, a woman dressed in a stark white nightgown awakens in the middle of the road.
Passing a gang of cows and some nosey neighbors on her barefoot walk back toward town, it’s clear Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is no stranger to sleepwalking. Abrasive and aggressive, with a barely contained rage, despite her odd morning, Lorna attempts to go on with her day as planned. After handling an unsettling leak in her home, she heads to her job as a seamstress. However, a note left for her regarding the whereabouts of her long-lost daughter sets her on an unexpected path. Upon his arrival in the remote Irish town of Kilkinure, detective Colman (Daryl McCormack) cannot help but ask about the hairbrushes he keeps seeing in the windowsills. Massey (Simon Delaney), a local guard, explains they’re meant to ward off the banshee rumored to stalk the area. It’s not that the citizens necessarily believe in spirits, he clarifies: “Doesn’t mean we’re not afraid of them, though.”
But then, this community has more reason than most to fear the wails of mourning women. Showtime’s The Woman in the Wall (which aired on BBC One in the U.K. starting in August) isn’t a ghost story per se, but it’s the tale of a haunting nonetheless — rooted in the very real atrocity of the country’s Catholic-run Magdalene laundries, to harrowing and ultimately quite moving effect.

The term “master of horror” is one that gets thrown around a little too loosely sometimes, but there are a precious few filmmakers who very much embody that prestigious label. If he didn’t achieve that status prior to 2013, James Wan sure did with the release of The Conjuring. The film, touted by many as Wan’s masterpiece, was indeed quite masterful, and with it the Aussie filmmaker brilliantly set the stage for a franchise built around the case files of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
In the wake of spinoff film Annabelle, the Warrens are back.

The Witch aside, the first few months of 2016 haven’t been kind to horror fans. From The Forest to The Boy, witless and largely worthless chillers have come and gone without leaving so much as a bad dream in their wake. So it’s relieving to get a jolting reminder of what good horror should look like with the first trailer for The Conjuring 2, James Wan’s much-anticipated follow-up to the 2013 frightener.
Expanding on the pitch-perfect teaser, the full-length preview (above) elegantly lays out the scary story on display this time around. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back in the roles of renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren – but while the first film was set in a haunted house in 1971 Rhode Island, the sequel finds them traveling to England on the trail of an elusive spirit called The Enfield Poltergeist. Hello again, dear readers. I hope the year is off to a good start for all of you. It’s coming to you later than I intended, but here’s the first Trailer Trashin’ column of 2016. Now let’s take a look at the teaser trailer for director James Wan’s upcoming horror sequel The Conjuring 2.
Premise: Husband and wife paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
My take: Ever since I first saw The Conjuring (2013), it’s been one of my favorite horror movies. Inspired by the work of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, it was a smartly written, sharply directed film with good scares, a talented cast playing characters we actually cared about, and which made good use of its period 1970s setting.

In acclaimed BBC 2 drama, The Fall, Jamie Dornan proved that just because you’re incredibly good-looking, doesn’t mean you can’t absolutely terrify viewers. While the actor-model has since landed the much-coveted lead in saucy adaptation, Fifty Shades Of Grey, he’ll be back for The Fall‘s second season as serial killer Paul Spector.
Starring opposite Dornan is returning lead, Gillian Anderson, who will reprise her role Superintendant Stella Gibson. Their paths sorta crossed at the end of the first season, when Spector upped his game and began taunting the detective from a safe distance. He narrowly avoided being caught, in one of TV’s most talked about shows of last year.
Now, with this first glimpse at the second season, it seems Gibson’s dogged attempts to uncover his true identity are set to continue. This time around, Spector’s big-headed ego shows no signs of stopping as he targets Gibson personally.
