With the UK streaming release of South of Hope Street this week, writer/director Jane Spencer talks about exploring ‘the big questions’, working with Michael Madsen, black shoes and shunning the Hollywood system.
Your latest film, the visually arresting dystopian drama South of Hope Street, depicts an oppressed society surrounded by wars. As Writer. Director what inspired you to make it?
I have always been very much interested in ‘the Big Questions’: Why do we exist? What, exactly, Are we? Why are we here? A great way to pose these questions is to place us against the forces that do not allow free thought, and to think about these questions.
I wanted t to explore this in an allegory, a sci-film film, with all the characters representing forces in our world: forces of repression, forces of peace, mystery, poetry. Films like this are films that are inspiring to me,...

The best classic rock songs often have sad backstories. For example, Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” was inspired by the dark side of the 1960s. The tune wasn’t actually a hit at the time, but it’s become one of the most ubiquitous songs of its era.
Donovan’s ‘Season of the Witch’ presaged the rise of hard drugs
During a 2011 interview with The Guardian, Donovan explained how “Season of the Witch” foretold the end of the 1960s. “I think someone asked Roger McGuinn [of The Byrds] about the ’60s, and he said: ‘Well it lasted until December ’66 and something dark happened,'” the “Mellow Yellow” singer said. “All the hard drugs came in and something started happening that was big business.”
“Season of the Witch” was one of many Donovan songs that straddled the lines between folk music and psychedelia. Donovan discussed why he formed his signature sound.

The best classic rock songs change everything. For example, The Eagles’ “Take It Easy” was an announcement in more ways than one. The tune also transitioned 1960s music into 1970s music.
The Eagles’ ‘Take It Easy’ was co-written by a rock star who wasn’t in the band
During a 2003 interview with The Uncool, Glenn Frey discussed writing “Take It Easy” with Jackson Browne. “I told him that I really liked it,” Frey recalled. “‘What was that, man? What a cool tune that is.’ He started playing it for me and said, ‘Yeah, but I don’t know — I’m stuck.’ So he played the second unfinished verse and I said, ‘It’s a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford, slowin’ down to take a look at me.’ That was my contribution to ‘Take It Easy,’ really, just finishing the second verse.”

If you still haven’t heard the earworm that is the “Ballad of the Witches’ Road,” from Marvel’s Agatha All Along count yourself lucky, because it is catchy. There are even multiple versions of the song, an original masterpiece by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez with various lyrics, which are fun to decipher. For example, Lorna Wu’s version of the ballad contains different verses than the original one sung by Agatha’s ragtag coven. Japanese Breakfast even covered a new pop version of the ballad, produced by Jack Antonoff.
Florence + the Machine’s song “Seven Devils” was used in a teaser trailer for the show. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer even made a musical nod to Dolly Parton’s song “Jolene,” hinting that Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha was the inspiration for that song in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One of the most popular classic rock songs for the Halloween season is Donovan’s “Season of the Witch.” The “Hurdy Gurdy Man” singer once said the track was “prophetic.” When asked to explain the song’s meaning, he didn’t mention anything about real witches. Instead, he connected “Season of the Witch” to a major American subculture.
Donovan’s ‘Season of the Witch’ was about ‘a darkness that was falling’
During a 2004 interview posted on Best Classic Bands, the “Mellow Yellow” singer explained the meaning of “Season of the Witch.” “It was about beatniks out to make it rich,” he recalled. “It was bohemia infiltrating the popular culture. It was tongue in cheek, but also it was about a darkness that was falling. That darkness was the freedoms that I spoke of, that opened the doors, and the Beats in the ’50s who helped us speak what we wanted...

Some classic rock songs have more layers than you might expect. For example, Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” might seem like a light song for Halloween, but Donovan actually has some very strong opinions on witchcraft. He also doesn’t seem to have the most positive appraisal of Christianity.
‘Season of the Witch’ singer Donovan follows his own cocktail of spirituality
First, a little background. During a 1997 interview with South Coast Today, the “Mellow Yellow” singer said his personal belief system combines Buddhism, goddess worship, and Celtic paganism. Many modern pagans do witchcraft or at least hold a sympathetic view of it. Furthermore, it’s not uncommon for modern pagans — particularly those living in the Western world — to be critical of Christianity.
During a 2018 interview with Goldmine, Donovan said he got a lot out of books about meditation. “These books were hidden in the West,” he said. “They were not available.

Just as its female lead is letting her inner rage come bubbling to the surface, the movie Your Monster, about this young woman, is also crying out from the inside to become a full-blown Broadway musical and not just the cult midnight movie it inevitably will be.
A sometimes awkward combo of horror/rom-com/musical elements that don’t always mesh perfectly but still blend well enough makes writer-director Caroline Lindy’s own feature-length adaptation of her short film a fun ride, as well as a terrific showcase for its stars Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey. In Irish folklore and literature dating back to the 1500s, writers from the island nation have written about mythical beings known as “Fetches” that haunt people whose days are numbered. According to legend, Fetches take on the physical form of the humans they visit — and if your own creepy doppelganger visits you in the evening, it means your death is imminent. But if they visit you in the morning, you can prepare yourself for a long life ahead of you.
That mythology is set to come to life in “The Fetch,” a new horror movie debuting at the Austin Film Festival that promises to fuse Irish folklore with modern day scares. According to an official synopsis, the film follows a grieving father who finds himself haunted by the Fetch as he mourns the death of his only son.
“The Fetch” marks the feature directorial debut of J.C. Doler, who has previously released six short films.

Update 10/8/24: This post has been updated with details from Netflix’s “The Menendez Brothers” and Peacock’s “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed.”
It’s been over 30 years since Erik and Lyle Menendez shot and killed their parents at their Beverly Hills home, but the brothers’ story continues to develop.
The murders initially shocked the country and the world, as did the boys’ claims of abuse and multiple trials. Hollywood loves a little dramatic embellishment, especially with true crime. Since the Menendez brothers’ first trial was broadcast on Court TV in the 1990s, even the fictionalized version uses verbatim testimony and reenactment of specific moments. Lana Del Rey understands the dark, sensual side of classic rock better than just about anyone else. For that reason, she’s the perfect candidate to cover The Eagles’ “Hotel California.” Here’s a look at why she decided that’s a bad idea.
Lana Del Rey revealed what makes The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ difficult to cover
Artists from the 1950s and 1960s released covers as singles far more often than artists do today. For example, many of Elvis Presley’s biggest hits were covers. That era of music has profoundly inspired Del Rey, so it’s no surprise that she’s put her own spin on many beloved songs. She’s recorded tunes by Nancy Sinatra, Nina Simone, Bobby Vinton, John Denver, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sublime, Donovan, Nirvana, Marilyn Monroe, and others. However, she has yet to try her hands at any song by The Eagles.
During a 2019 interview with the Los Angeles Times,...

There’s about to be a wave of beloved Salemites returning to Days of our Lives in the coming months, and they all have one character in common.
Who Can It Be Now?
In a town primarily filled with Hortons and Bradys, it’s easy to see how most people in Salem are connected. But with returns ranging from Bradys, Hortons, Dimeras, and a Donovan, there’s only one character they all have in common… Abigail.
Sure, “Abigail” (AnnaLynne McCord) may not truly be Abigail, and is instead another Greene sibling who is working with Mark (Jonah Robinson) to scheme their way to the Dimera fortune for Clyde (James Read), but could all these returns mean something more for the still-deceased Abby?
Connections Across Salem
The first to return will be Abigail’s parents, Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) and Jack (Matthew Ashford), their return coinciding with Days’ 15,000th episode in December.

Some of the best classic rock songs are great in their simplicity. One of The Eagles’ classic hits, “Take It Easy,” is one of those tunes. The track is partly about Route 66, but a member of the Eagles connected it to the culture of the United States more broadly.
Don Henley revealed the meaning of The Eagles’ ‘Take It Easy’
During a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, The Eagles’ Don Henley discussed the history of “Take It Easy.” “I don’t recall the first time I heard it in its basic form, but I will always remember the first time I heard those shimmering guitar chords in the intro pulsing through the big playback speakers at Olympic Studios in Barnes, a suburban district in the London borough of Richmond upon Thames, where the first Eagles album was recorded,” he said. “The song’s primary appeal, I think, is that it evokes a sense of motion,...

Jennifer Aniston is arguably one of the most underrated parts of Friends. Although her character can be quite taxing at times, the actress single-handedly pushed a few seasons simply by her wit. On top of having one of the most interesting character arcs out of all of the others, she often also ended up creating some of the most hilarious moments in the series.

While there is no denying that the series had a lot of personality from all directions, Aniston’s contribution often seemed to get lost in the mix. However, there is one scene that perfectly showcases how well the actress was able to blend into her character.

Spooky season has arrived early, and it flew in on the broomstick of Agatha Harkness. Ok fine, technically the Marvel witch doesn’t need a broom to fly, but “Agatha All Along” does bring the witchiest of witch vibes with its playlist.
Thanks to the cast’s performance at the D23 Expo this year, we knew that Marvel’s latest series would feature another new original song, in the form of “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road.” Unfortunately, we only hear the faint melody of it in the season premiere, as Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) unwittingly hums it in her car.
It comes in full in episode two, and on top of that, we already have a solid spooky season playlist building up in the episodes.
Here’s a rundown of all the songs in “Agatha All Along” (so far):

Say what you will about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's foray into television on Disney+, but you can't deny that the company knows how to craft a credit sequence. AI-fueled "Secret Invasion" screw-up aside, Marvel shows on Disney+ have signed off with some of the most creative, enjoyable end credits in recent memory, many of them a mini-adventure in their own right.
"Agatha All Along" is no exception. The new series may not be big on mid-credit scenes, but it uses its end credits to tell us exactly what it's about. The first episode ends with the Donovan song "Season of the Witch," which would be too on the nose if it weren't such an excellent, effective tune. It also shows the names of the series' cast and crew over a sort of witchy mood board, one that features witches ranging from creepy to adorable. With the presidential election two months away, U.S. officials are getting serious about Russian disinformation campaigns and other efforts to interfere with the nation’s politics. On Wednesday, this crackdown was made apparent via an indictment unsealed in New York’s Southern District Court showing sanctions on 10 individuals and entities; the seizure of 32 internet domains; and conspiracy charges against two Russia Today staffers, who are accused of funneling funds into an elaborate scheme that covertly manipulated online influencers to do the Kremlin’s bidding.

Ever since that wild scene with Lady Gaga, one DC star has never looked at acting the same way. Imagine being wrapped up like sardines in a tarp, thrust into a brutally perverse, bloody orgy—definitely not your typical day on set! This bizarre experience, straight out of the twisted world of American Horror Story, left him shaken, questioning reality and his own sanity.

When you’re sharing the screen with Lady Gaga, things are bound to get weird, but this took ‘wild experience’ to a whole new level. Far from the superhero antics of the DC universe, this moment was a dark dive into the surreal, and it’s one that’s likely to haunt him for years to come.

Needle-drop music cues have been a hallmark of the "Deadpool" franchise stretching back to the opening credits of the first film, which kicks off with an amusingly chaotic freeze-frame action sequence set to Juice Newton's cover of "Angel of the Morning." This was a strong statement of irreverent purpose, and a signal to the audience that the artists behind this big-screen take on Marvel Comics' had a mile-wide sentimental streak.
The one constant through all three films has been the trio of star Ryan Reynolds and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. After the travestying of the Merc with a Mouth in 20th Century Fox's botched "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," these gentlemen have worked overtime to deliver a version of Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza's character that respects the fans who keep this superhero movie train chugging. And while you may love these films for their gleefully profane humor or,...

“His actions are still terrible”: 5 Kentaro Miura’s Characters From Berserk That Disgusts Anime Fans
Kentaro Miura’s Berserk is one of the darkest anime/manga, with the most gory plot. In fact, the story is so explicit that major studios have left the manga alone for ages, with no recent anime adaptations despite its popularity.
Of course, there are plenty of well-constructed characters, but Miura seems to specialize in creating characters who are evil from their very roots. These characters will make you barf, and their actions will make you want to pull your eyes away. So here is a list of the worst Berserk characters who will disgust you to your very core.
#5 Rosine Rosine | Berserk | Hakusensha
Rosine is an apostle and is a major antagonist in the Conviction Arc of Berserk. She dwelled in the Misty Valley and terrorized the nearby villages, in which her followers ate the people and their livestock. She also captured the children and transformed them into elves.
