Nicholas Braun, Stephanie Koenig, Debby Ryan, Mekki Leeper and Cory Michael Smith have joined Zac Efron and Phoebe Dynevor in celebrity thriller “Famous.”

The LA-set film — from director Jody Hill and exploring the dark side of celebrity — began production last week in Los Angeles, comes from Esmail Corp. and Caviar.

A24 is set to release “Famous” in the U.S., reuniting with Efron after last year’s “The Iron Claw,” which grossed $45M worldwide. Black Bear is repping international rights. WME Independent and CAA Media Finance brokered the sale.

In “Famous,” Efron stars in dual roles, playing both overzealous fan, Lance Dunkquist, and Hollywood heartthrob, James Jansen. 2024 is half over and we have seen some brilliant and some not-so-brilliant TV shows by streaming services and cable networks. However, the sci-fi fantasy genre TV shows are proving to be the biggest ones this year with the release of shows like Fallout and 3 Body Problem. The sci-fi fans are having a great year and if TV shows weren’t enough we also got Dune: Part Two this year which is the most successful film 2024 so far. So, let’s check out the best new and returning sci-fi fantasy shows that came out this year.

As we move closer to the end of 2024, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the worst shows of the year. It has been a fruitful year for TV watchers, particularly those who prefer to stream their series. We’ve seen an interesting mix of new shows and the anticipated return of old favorites. Still, this doesn’t mean they have all been winners.

Before we share which shows have been the most disappointing, let’s give recognition to some of the many series we’ve enjoyed the most. At the top of my list, I have Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Hulu’s The Bear season 3. I know Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also received a lot of attention, as well as the returning Prime Video favorite, The Boys with season 4. Which shows have made it to your favorites list so far?...

Since Netflix shook up the film and series world, tons of other streaming options have popped up. Over time, they’ve all developed their own original content, which has helped each platform stand out. The problem is that Apple TV+ seems to have dropped the ball here. Sure, creating original shows is great, but they still need to be promoted.

Even so, Apple’s streaming service is still seen by a lot of movie buffs as one of the best — if not the best — when it comes to quality. Their series even outshine many of Netflix’s big hits, yet hardly anyone knows about them. These are shows that definitely deserve more public recognition.

Scott Cooper hit a home run in his first filmmaking at bat with "Crazy Heart," a melancholy drama about an alcoholic country music singer (Jeff Bridges) who's wrecked his life many times over and is about to crash for the last time despite entering into an unexpectedly healthy relationship with a journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal). The film earned Bridges his first, long overdue Oscar for Best Actor, and though the film itself was a touch formulaic, Cooper's direction of his first-rate cast gave him a reputation as an actor-friendly filmmaker.

With Halloween coming in just over a month, A24 has announced it will bring Ari Aster’s Hereditary and some of its other most unsettling horror movies back to theaters for just $8 per ticket.

A24’s Eerie Series will screen a new film each week, beginning on October 1st with Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which stars Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman as a couple who forms a strange bond with a disturbed teenage boy (played by Barry Keoghan).

It will be followed by David Lowery’s A Ghost Story starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara on October 8th and Trey Edward Shults’ It Comes at Night led by Joel Edgerton on October 15th. The decidedly less spooky, yet surrealist Nicolas Cage comedy/drama Dream Scenario will hit screens beginning October 22nd.

Veteran executive Josh McLaughlin is headed to Nine Stories Productions, the company run by actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

McLaughlin most recently worked at his own shingle, Wink Pictures. Before that, he spent ten years at Focus Features, most recently as president of production, with his projects including Spike Lee’s Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman, filmmaker Kasi Lemmons’s Harriet Tubman feature Harriet, Joe Wright’s Winston Churchill biopic The Darkest Hour and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Phantom Thread. He also worked with David Leitch on the Charlize Theron action movie Atomic Blonde and Joel Edgerton on Boy Erased, about a young man sent to gay conversion therapy.

He previously worked at Chernin Entertainment and The Mark Gordon Company.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s company Nine Stories Productions has hired Josh McLaughlin as its new president.

In his new role, McLaughlin will work alongside Gyllenhaal to develop a slate of projects. As recently announced, the company has closed a three-year, first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The pact includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases.

Paul Schrader has a busy few months ahead as he shares an update on two upcoming films.

The Oscar-nominated director revealed that he’s currently developing the new feature The Basics of Philosophy as he prepares to begin filming Non Compos Mentis (Latin for “an unsound mind”) in November.

He told Screen Daily that he’s completed an outline and plans to finish a draft in the next three months for The Basics of Philosophy, which is about “an intellectual university philosophy professor,” made in the style of his ‘Man in a Room’ spiritual trilogy, First Reformed (2017), The Card Counter (2021) and Master Gardener (2022).

“I’ve got to do a very quick rewrite on [Compos],” said Schrader. “I’m hoping before November to write the new one and have another bullet in the gun ready to go.”

Netflix has narrowed the gap between the big and the small screen. The streaming giant does not shy away from investing money in ambitious projects, to give the audience a memorable visual experience, without heading out of their homes.

Over the years, the streaming service has produced some costly films, with budgets comparable to those spent on theatrical releases by studios like Disney and Universal Pictures. Here are the 10 most expensive original films on Netflix, ranked from the least budget to the most.

Yup. The critically acclaimed science-fiction hit was recently renewed.

Now, there’s just one big catch. The first season was based entirely on Blake Crouch’s 2016 book.

Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who quickly is abducted and becomes a captive of the multiverse.

He spends the rest of the season experiencing lives he could have lived while attempting to get back to his home world and his family.

So that means the new season, whenever it finally arrives on the streaming timetable, will have to be created out of thin air.

As viewers of modern TV are acutely aware, this venturing away from the written source material can be a hit-or-miss proposition.

Sometimes, it works.

I recently finished reading Blake Crouch's mind-bending sci-fi novel "Dark Matter," which was adapted into an Apple TV+ show earlier this year. I haven't watched the show yet (I'm planning to catch up with it shortly), but we've called it "the best sci-fi series in years" and that praise makes sense, considering the show is apparently a very faithful adaptation of the largely excellent book. Last Friday, Apple announced that the show will be getting a second season -- a somewhat curious decision, given that the book ends in a place where they easily could have delivered a satisfying story and called it a day.

At the end of the novel, the unwitting multiverse traveler Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton in the show) finally manages to reunite with his real family in his original universe, but he and his wife (Jennifer Connelly...

There are many more realities to explore within Apple TV’s “Dark Matter,” and the streamer has announced it’ll do just that following a Season 2 renewal of the critically acclaimed sci-fi series.

Based on the novel of the same name by bestselling author and showrunner Blake Crouch, “Dark Matter” follows Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who, one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago, is abducted into an alternate version of his life. “Dark Matter” is based on a book by Blake Crouch; he’s also the Apple TV+ adaptation’s creator/showrunner. He executive produces alongside Matt Tolmach, Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, and star Joel Edgerton. In addition to Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley also star.

A new season of Dark Matter is in the works!

On Friday (August 16), it was announced that the sci-fi series, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, had been renewed for a second season by Apple TV+.

Season one of the show premiered back in May and wrapped in June.

News of the renewal comes just over a month after the Season 1 finale of the series, which aired on June 26. The sci-fi thriller series is based on the Blake Crouch novel of the same name. Apple TV+ viewers might get the chance to finally find out how Dark Matter’s interdimensional travel works and which universe the main characters ended up in after the streamer renewed the sci-fi drama for a second season.

The tech company has handed Dark Matter, which stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, a sophomore season after its nine-episode, first season ended in June.

However, Blake Crouch, author of the book that the series is based on and creator, showrunner and executive producer of the series, will have to come up with new stories as there is no source material on the bookstands.

Vertical has picked up the North American and UK/Ireland distribution rights to the comedic thriller I Don’t Understand You, which stars Nick Kroll (Don’t Worry Darling), Andrew Rannells (A Simple Favor), Morgan Spector (The Gilded Age) and Amanda Seyfried (the Mamma Mia! franchise), and Deadline reports that the company is planning to give the film a theatrical release sometime in early 2025.

Actor David Joseph Craig wrote the screenplay with Brian Crano, and the duo directed the film together. While this marks Craig’s feature directorial debut, Crano has previously directed the 2017 Rebecca Hall / Dan Stevens comedy Permission and the 2011 Jason Ritter / Rebecca Hall comedy A Bag of Hammers. Somehow, Rebecca Hall appears to have missed out on I Don’t Understand You, but her husband, Morgan Spector, is in there.

Vertical will release I Don’t Understand You in theaters in early 2025.

Veteran director and screenwriter Paul Schrader will be honored at this year’s Lucaa Film Festival with a lifetime achievement award.

The Italian event, which runs Sept. 21-29, will also screen a retrospective of Schrader’s work, including Blue Collar, Hardcore, The Comfort of Strangers, Affliction, Auto Focus, The Walker, The Canyons, The Card Counter, Master Gardener, Mishima, and First Reformed.

Viggo Mortensen called out Amazon in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine for the company’s decision to scrap an extensive theatrical release for Ron Howard’s 2022 movie “Thirteen Lives” and give it a global streaming launch instead. Mortensen, who starred in the well-reviewed Thai cave rescue thriller opposite Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton, said the film was a “really good movie” that MGM intended to give a full blown theatrical release to after “they did their test screenings for that movie and got the highest scores in the history of that studio.”

“They were going to put it out worldwide in many, many, many thousands of theaters,” Mortensen said. “Then Amazon bought MGM, initially promised to respect the deal that MGM had made with Ron Howard, and then they went back on that. Dark Matter left some aspects of its ending on an ambiguous note, but new details have thankfully emerged to clarify the fate of Joel Edgerton's Jason Dessen.

Apple TV+'s hit sci-fi show recently came to a close, expanding upon the original story conjured by the book of the same name by pushing its multiversal concept into overdrive.

The series' final episode saw Jason's many versions allowing the original Jason to be with Daniela and Charlie, putting their selfish desires aside to allow the family to be at peace.
