Universal’s top-of-the-line Alfred Hitchcock classics make the jump to Ultra HD in a worthy update. We’ve seen these before but they’re always different in a theatrical setting… and the quality is so amazing here, a big home theater setup can duplicate a theatrical experience. It might as well be a Robert Burks / John L. Russell cinematographer’s film festival too, or an ‘Editor George Tomasini Festival’ — that unheralded ace cut all four of these masterpieces. And fans of Psycho have an extra treat: a slightly longer original cut.

What fears lie within the heart of man? Can fear actually kill you, and if so, is it in the form of a parasitic slug that crushes your spine and takes your life? The only appropriate answers would be: a) many, b) yes, and c) most definitely – especially if gimmick master William Castle has anything to say about it. The Tingler (1959) manages to rise above the hucksterism (although it’s there in spades) to slyly comment on marital relations and creepy body horror in a very entertaining B movie setting.
Coming off the success of House on Haunted Hill earlier in the year, Columbia Pictures was eager to stay in the Castle business and quickly green lit the film, bringing him back to direct, Vincent Price to star, and Robb White (Macabre) to write. Released at the end of July, The Tingler did well with audiences looking for a fun and immersive experience,...

Call him strange, but CineSavant is fascinated by ‘women’s films’ that advance a consensus role template for American women. Then they ask questions like, “Is Hilda Crane a . . . Tramp?” Ladies attending these films may have sought to stir up fantasies with a racy romantic adventure — but not too racy. What a tough nut to crack within the Production Code: ace screenwriter Philip Dunne chose this as his third writing-directing assignment. Jean Simmons gives it her best shot, but the screen is stolen by everybody’s favorite harpy, Evelyn Varden.

13 phobias on film for Friday the 13th13 phobias on film for Friday the 13thSasha James1/13/2017 9:05:00 Am
Did you know that “paraskavedekatriaphobia” is the fear of Friday the 13th?
Instead of the usual breakdown of the Friday the 13th movies that you’re probably used to, we decided to celebrate this Friday the 13th with a write-up of phobias and the movies that we most associate with them. Yes, we could have picked Arachnophobia for arachnophobia, but we tried to be at least a little bit more creative.
Check out our list below, and let us know if you can think up better movies to represent the below phobias.
Panphobia (Fear of Everything) – What About Bob?
You can’t talk about phobias without talking about Bob Wiley. In Frank Oz’s 90s classic What About Bob?, Bill Murray plays the multiphobic patient of Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss). He’s afraid of everything: buses,...

Vincent Price starred in a ton of B horror movies throughout the course of his career. From the films he made in the ’50s, most people are familiar with The House on Haunted Hill, The Fly, and House of Wax, which are all films I enjoy watching during the Halloween seasons. They’re fantastic movies that have coincidentally all been remade over the years. But the film I wanted to focus on in this next installment of "Fun 1950s Horror Movies to Watch During Halloween" is the actor’s 1959 film, The Tingler.
The Tingler doesn't seem like it’s as popular as the other films he’s made. Whenever I bring it up with certain friends, family, and other people, I’m almost always met with a perplexed look on their face, like they’ve never heard of the movie before! I’m sure many of you are familiar with it,...

Way back when, Dread Central favorite Joe Lynch was attached to bring a remake of the William Castle classic The Tingler to the big screen. Alas, it never materialized, but thanks to the wonders of the interwebs, you can now see Lynch's concept boards!
It was around 2009 when this project was lurking about one of the bigger studios out there, and horror's dynamic writing duo, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, had turn in what Lynch called "an amazing script."
Too bad we never got to see this one. Given the principals involved, it could and would still be a home run. Check out the artwork below, and click it for a bigger and better look. The art is by Ken Perkins.
Lynch's next film, Everly, starring Salma Hayek, was picked up by Dimension Films during the European Film Market. Release news to come. To keep up with all things Lynch related,...

If someone were to ask us to name our top ten directors of all time, the name William Castle would sit firmly somewhere within the top five. The man was not only a true showman but also an absolute genius. If we have one regret in our tenure here at Dread Central, it is that we weren't around during Castle's heyday of insane gimmicks. The man was without question the godfather of viral marketing, and it's taken the rest of the industry decades to catch up. If you live somewhere within the Tri-State Region, we have the info on an event that you do Not want to miss!

The William Castle Film Collection (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, $80.95) assembles the master showman’s eight Columbia Pictures features in one set. Three (Zotz!, 13 Frightened Girls, The Old Dark House) are new to DVD. Only two are in color (Girls, House), but black and white works far better here to evoke film fear anyhow. Castle produced and directed them all (though he shares a producing credit with Hammer Films’ Anthony Hinds on the House remake). Three were scripted by Robb White (who also wrote Castle’s earlier gimmicky genre hits MacAbre and House On Haunted Hill) while Ray Russell and Robert Dillon racked up two scripts each and Starlog contributor Robert Bloch penned one.
The films (fantasies, thrillers, comedies) are grouped sort of by theme, two per disc. So, 13 Frightened Girls (a.k.a. The Candy Web) is teamed with 13 Ghosts for the triskaidekaphobia entry. Homicidal and Strait-jacket represent the murder,...
