Freestyle Digital Media is gearing up to release the horror-comedy The Zombie Wedding, a unique blend of romance and the undead. Set to debut on Cable and Digital VOD platforms including Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, and more on 13th September 2024, the film will also play in select theatres across the US. It’s the first feature film from Weekly World News Studios, launching their IP-driven slate of movie projects.
The concept of The Zombie Wedding is as quirky as it sounds: a young New Jersey couple chooses to go ahead with their nuptials amidst a full-blown zombie apocalypse. What makes the story even more unconventional? The groom is already a zombie, while the bride is still human. As the day approaches, tensions rise not just between the undead and the living, but also between their two vastly different families.

Welcome to the Scene to Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex Associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
I have a disclaimer. I talk to actress Thomasin Mackenzie, director William Oldroyd, script writers Ottessa Moshfeg and Luke Goebel, about the Neon film Eileen, but this episode is going to be split into two.
First half is a separate interview with Thomasin Mackenzie and the second half is a full interview with Moshfegh, Goebel and Oldroyd. Think of this as the Eileen hour! Hope you can cut me some slack because they couldn’t record together!
Eileen is adapted from the novel of the same name written by Ottessa Moshfeg. Alongside Mackenzie, the film stars Ann Hathaway, Shea Wigham, Marin Ireland, and Siobhan Fallon Hogan.

Seeing Anthony Dod Mantle’s name on EnergaCAMERIMAGE’s guest list, I had some instinct we should talk. Few cinematographers in my (or yours or anyone’s) lifetime have rejigged what that job means, what it might do, and how people––in direct terms or on the most subconscious levels––think about it. Just a glance at his credits is dizzying: there’s the radical approach to visual storytelling in Thomas Vinterberg’s The Celebration, a movie people still try to even approach emulating; Harmony Korine’s Julien-Donkey Boy, which almost looks like The Celebration expect for the fact that it looks like literally nothing else; there’s mainstream cinema’s major introduction to digital images in 28 Days Later, the early stage of a Danny Boyle partnership that leads to Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire; somewhere along the way he shoots two Ron Howard films that suggest the director discovered experimental cinema; and,...

Thomasin McKenzie’s dull life transforms once Anne Hathaway comes onto the scene in Neon’s Eileen trailer. McKenzie (Totally Completely Fine) stars as a secretary who quickly becomes infatuated with a new counselor, played by Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables), in the noir thriller.
The cast also includes Shea Whigham, Sam Nivola, Owen Teague, Marin Ireland, and Siobhan Fallon Hogan.
Eileen‘s based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s book, with the author and Luke Goebel (Moshefegh’s spouse) adapting and William Oldroyd (Lady Macbeth) directing. Producers include Moshfegh, Goebel, Oldroyd, Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu, Peter Cron, and Bavand Karim.
The R-rated drama currently sits at 89% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes following its Sundance Film Festival premiere. IGN’s Matt Donato calls it a “nifty little shapeshifter of a thriller,” while Vox’s Alissa Wilkinson says, “Eileen is dank and disturbing and, when you’re in the mood for something that will mess you up,...

Thomasin McKenzie has a doozy of a day, the kind she’ll never forget in the first trailer for “Eileen.” Set during a grim 1964 Massachusetts winter, the William Oldroyd-directed noir concerns a young and impressionable secretary who becomes understandably enraptured by a new counselor (Anne Hathaway) at the prison where she works. The trailer doesn’t spell out what diabolical doings will be done, but the implication is Hathaway goes full femme fatale.
Alongside its two top-billed stars, “Eileen” features Shea Whigham, Siobhan Fallon Hogan and Owen Teague (who will soon headline “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” alongside Freya Allen).
Based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel of the same name and produced by Fifth Season, “Eileen” debuted to positive reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Neon picked up the picture and plans to give it a year end awards season push. Audiences can expect a...

"You really think you're a normal person? I bet you have brilliant dreams..." Neon has unveiled an official trailer for Eileen, an indie psychological crime thriller from filmmaker William Oldroyd (Lady Macbeth) that first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. This got mostly dismal reviews out of Sundance, with many saying it was one of their least favorite films from the fest, however Neon snatched it up and will release it this fall anyway. Set during a bitter 1964 Massachusetts winter, young secretary Eileen becomes enchanted by the glamorous new counselor at the prison where she works. Their budding friendship takes a twisted turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret — throwing Eileen onto a sinister path... It's based on the book of the same name written by Ottessa Moshfegh, to give you an idea of what you're getting into with this story. Thomasin McKenzie stars as the titular Eileen in this story,...

The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 2, and work on all television and film projects was stopped immediately by guild members. Production was able to continue on some projects that already had completed scripts, but since the nature of late-night talk shows requires timely jokes, they have all been off the air for exactly five months.
But, thanks to last week’s deal between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), all of the late-night shows will return to the air on Monday, Oct. 2 with brand new episodes. As The Streamable noted last week, because these types of shows are generally day-to-day operations, they are able to get back to airing new episodes almost immediately.
That being said, the shows will still have to contend with the fact that they will not be able to have actors on as guests in order...

Heartstopper star Kit Connor says he doesn’t want to be defined by the term “queer actor”, after his breakthrough role as bisexual school rugby star Nick Nelson in the Netflix mega-hit.
Connor, along with co-star Joe Locke, has become a star with the arrival of Heartstopper, which premiered on the platform in April 2022 and soon became its fifth most watched English language show, watched for a reported 53million hours worldwide.
But he received accusations of “queerbaiting” (appropriation by straight people of gay culture for kudos) after he was photographed hand in hand with actress Maia Reficco in November last year.
At the time, Connor broke his own retreat from social media to come out to his many followers – a decision he told the Guardian newspaper he now considers “frankly a bit rash” – when he posted:

The end of Robert Zemeckis' 1994 mega-hit "Forrest Gump" saw the titular character, played by Tom Hanks, presented with a young son he didn't know he had. Forrest — "not a smart man" as he says — had spent the bulk of the film attempting to declare his love for his childhood sweetheart Jenny (Robin Wright), who was often kept out of his life by their differing circumstances. He went off to war, she went off to protest. Forrest was finally able to state his love out loud when they found themselves in each other's company again as adults. A few years thereafter, after yet another separation, Jenny returned again, this time with six-year-old Forrest Jr. The film ends with Forrest and his son living together. Jenny, sadly, dies from complications with AIDS.

Anyone who saw William Oldroyd’s 2016 first feature, the blisteringly indecorous Victorian tragedy Lady Macbeth, will know not to expect anything ordinary from his long-awaited follow-up. But even with those expectations in mind, what a strange and spellbinding psychological thriller he has woven out of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel, Eileen, which shares with the British director’s debut a contagious fascination with complicated women subject to dark impulses. Rippling with sly humor and a bold command of the tropes of classic Hitchcockian suspense, this is a twisty and beguiling original, led by contrasting but expertly synced performances from Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway.
While the new film, set in 1964 in the snowbound blue-collar Boston suburbs, is an entirely different animal to Lady Macbeth, it shares some thematic elements, notably its unblinking study of a title character who transforms once she’s uncaged, her desires liberating an unsuspected ruthlessness. And like Oldroyd’s previous film,...

This watchable if undeniably on-the-nose drama follows middle-aged American mother Barbara (Siobhan Fallon Hogan) on a quest for justice after her first-year student son Jimmy (Jay Jay Warren) dies at a party in his frat house after imbibing an excess of alcohol and pills. In entirely believable fashion, the son’s university refuses to admit any responsibility for Jimmy’s death. But Barbara is a feisty Irish-Catholic with red hair, and has an unquenchable devotion to her children – although her focus on them, especially her ill-fated eldest son, comes off a little dysfunctional in the early part of the film as she calls Jimmy incessantly to hear how his pledge week is going. After his death, and a period of mourning and housecoat wearing, she...

Together, the lockdown drama from Bleecker Street, opens on 250 screens this weekend in a specialty market treading water and with little visibility on box office amid daily Covid headlines.
The trend continues of specialty films going wider faster and narrowing the window from theatrical to VOD in a nod to the chunk of its audience, mainly older, that feels more comfortable watching at home. The market is looking to a stream of fall product ahead of awards season, hoping the virus is more contained by then. Some good news offset the march of the Delta Variant this week as the Fda granted full approval to the Pfizer vaccine – shots in arms being key to an accelerated theatrical revival.

The film was produced by Bloody-Disgusting and it was written and directed by Frank Sabatella. Here’s the synopsis:
Stan (Jay Jay Warren) and Dommer's (Cody Kostro) lives suck. The first boy’s only family is his abusive grandfather, and the second is being subjected to a regime of perpetual bullying at school. One night, Stan discovers a monstrous creature has taken refuge in his shed. The boy will try to battle the beast, but Dommer will see it as a blessing that emerged from the dark, one which could help him put an end to those who make his everyday life a living hell.

It’s kind of interesting to see Johnny Depp in a movie like this. Years ago, the A-lister would take risks in smaller fare, playing oddball characters in simple character studies. However, it has been a long time since Depp has popped up in something of that sort. So, this week’s release of The Professor marks a return to the past for the man. Unfortunately, it’s also an incredibly forgettable work with little to offer. Pleasant enough to watch, it disappears from your memory as soon as the end credits roll. What’s worse, despite giving Depp a prime opportunity to go all out, he plays it oddly low key, opting for minor drunkenness over something more extreme and, frankly, interesting. The film (formerly known as Richard Says Goodbye) is a dramedy about how a college professor deals with a cancer diagnosis. When Richard (Depp) is told he has a terminal illness,...

"Are you alright?" "Well... no." Saban Films has debuted the official trailer for an indie drama titled The Professor, the second feature from writer/director Wayne Roberts (Katie Says Goodbye). Johnny Depp stars in this as a world-weary college professor diagnosed with a terminal illness who throws caution to the wind and indulges in numerous vices while attempting to live his life to the fullest. It's described as a dark comedy and has an impressive ensemble cast with Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, Zoey Deutch, Danny Huston, Justine Warrington, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Kaitlyn Bernard, Odessa Young, and Matreya Scarrwener. This seems like an odd role for Depp to take, but he's been staying out of the spotlight anyway, so why not an indie film. Just doesn't look that great. The House That Jack Built is the latest, and reportedly final, cinematic effort from the meretricious and petulant director Lars von Trier. A visionary master of bold and repellent art, with a twisted irony of benevolent nature formulated in the most offensive and auspicious manner possible, Von Trier excels in the morally artificial and frugal seduction. His most recent effort is a masterstroke of meta and self-referential testy ravenous appalling nature, possibly so significant in fact, in a darkly evocative expose of mankind, it may just be his magnum opus.
Matt Dillon stars in the titular role of Jack. A haunting portrayal of monstrous bigotry and murderous gluttony. Dillon, an often overlooked actor with tremendous ability and filmography to prove it, provokes a grand sense of audacious...

Lars von Trier seems confused. On the one hand, one may argue that the director’s latest film, “The House That Jack Built,” is unrelentingly misogynistic: After all, of the five “incidents” Jack (Matt Dillon) describes to Virgil (Bruno Ganz), or “Verge” as Jack calls him, four are the torture and murders of women.
On the other hand, Jack — who might be a fictionalization of von Trier himself — is not very bright. Nor is he as “charming” the way some serial killers have been described. Nor is he, nor the film for that matter, memorable in any way. “The House Jack Built” feels slightly gratuitous, at times trying to be artistic while simultaneously begging for people to love it, or to love von Trier, pretty pretty please.

Arch provocateur Lars von Trier returns with this shocking and disturbing serial killer drama The House That Jack Built starring Matt Dillon. As audacious as it is ludicrous, it’s consistently compelling, with an inspired final act that comes close to redeeming the horror of the preceding two hours.
Matt Dillon plays Jack, a prolific serial killer who’s racked up around 60 kills in late ’70s Oregon. As the film opens, we hear his voice, in darkness, confessing to a man named Verge (Bruno Ganz). The film is subsequently divided into five “incidents” (Jack’s words), each of which details a grisly murder that Jack deems important.

"If you feel like screaming, I definitely think you should." IFC Films has unveiled their full official Us trailer for Lars von Trier's controversial, demented serial killer film The House That Jack Built, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film stars Matt Dillon as the titular Jack, a highly intelligent serial killer, following him for 12 years profiling his murders. It's the latest creation from a very angry, very drunk Lars von Trier obsessed with "the idea that life is evil and soulless." Also starring Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman, Ed Speleers, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Sofie Gråbøl, Riley Keough, and Yu Ji-tae. IFC is also hosting a one-night only screening event on November 28th of what's being called the "Director's Cut", though I'm not sure how different it is from the film they're eventually releasing. I saw this in Cannes, and besides being evil, it's...
