Was musical director at the Manzanar Internment Camp for Japanese-American internees during World War II. He also played the saxophone and composed music, including an opera.
Started acting on the New York regional stage, on Broadway from 1955, eventually progressing to film and TV work. Often seen in supporting roles as 'ordinary Joes', storekeepers or bucolic types.
