Halloween approaches and with it the desire to revisit some of your favorite horror movie franchise, in order, from start to finish. What better franchise to binge than “Friday the 13th,” the celebrated slasher film series that started with Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 original before spawning sequels that would introduce iconic killer Jason Voorhees before sending him to Manhattan, outer space and back in time (Ok we made that last one up).
Ostensibly the cornerstone of the 1980s slasher film craze, “Friday the 13th” is one of the more inventive franchises, particularly when the concept was given a little more elasticity. For more than a decade, though, the franchise has been fully dormant – the last movie was 2009’s Michael Bay-produced reboot/remake “Friday the 13th.” A24 did recently announce a “Crystal Lake” series to be overseen by “Hannibal”/”Pushing Daisies” mastermind Bryan Fuller, so at least we have that to look forward to!

Michael Dorn has spent more time than anyone playing a Klingon in the Star Trek universe, but he had a chance to play a different character on Star Trek: Discovery. He just doesn't know exactly what character that would have been. As Discovery was set before Star Trek: The Original Series and Discovery had its own kind of Klingons, odds are good he wouldn't have been portraying a Klingon.
In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum for the Inside of You Podcast [via Screenrant], Dorn revealed that he was asked to be a part of Discovery several times. It sounds like there were conversations going back and forth then the producer at the time, which we're assuming to be Bryan Fuller, got fired, and things changed. Fuller did leave Discovery due to creative differences.

Mads Mikkelsen has played all kinds of characters over the years. While he is best known for his antagonistic roles, he has played so many complex roles that he has gained a reputation for, with his versatility and acting skills. Getting lost in a character is a second job for the actor, and he enjoys it thoroughly.

However, there is one genre that fans haven’t seen him very frequently; rom-coms. The actor has visited the genre in the past, but he never stayed for long. While he has been very vocal about wanting to bring back his iconic series, Hannibal, the same cannot be said about this.
During an interview, Mikkelsen revealed exactly why this was the case, and his reasoning made a lot of sense.

Mads Mikkelsen has played many villains over the years. From cannibalistic serial killers to Bond villains, and even an evil lion, there is no denying that the man has talent. From his first big role as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, he captivated audiences in a way that very few villains have been able to in the Bond franchise.

Since then, he has become Hollywood’s top pick for an antagonist. Although this means that he has gained an immense amount of success, it also seems to have affected his image in some way or another. During the filming of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, something quite odd happened between Mikkelsen and Harrison Ford that made things seriously awkward for the Hannibal actor.

Gillian Anderson is one of the most respected actresses in British television. Although the world best knows her for her performance in shows like X-Files, The Fall, Sex Education, and The Crown, she has done several other works that deserve just as much, if not more, recognition. There is no better example of an award-winning performance from her side than Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal.

The series is critically acclaimed for several reasons, ranging from its unique stylistic approach to its breath-taking performances, and impressive writing. The series manages to flush out every single character to their fullest degree, and a side character like Bedelia Du Maurier was no different.
During an interview, Anderson revealed the reason why she joined the cast of the series, even though she was playing a side character.

It might have been 15 years and counting since we last saw a live-action version of Jason Voorhees on the big screen—in the 2009 remake—but that doesn't mean the Friday the 13th universe is dying off anytime soon. Just like its iconic villain, it's really hard to kill off a popular horror franchise for good.
This past weekend, the original director and producer Sean S. Cunningham attended a convention in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he spoke about the franchise and his hopes for its future, and Bloody Disgusting got the scoop. Cunningham directed the 1980 movie that started it all alongside writer Victor Miller and he's remained part of the franchise over the years in a producing capacity.
Friday the 13th fans have repeatedly been put through the wringer due to a combination of factors, primarily a lengthy legal dispute over the rights to the franchise, which has prevented more movies from being made.

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin in Canada this July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. They have since been replaced by new showrunner Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry, the It prequel series that’s coming to HBO next year…...

At Silver Scream Con in Worcester, Ma this past weekend, Friday the 13th creator Sean S. Cunningham provided an update on the long-gestating TV series, Crystal Lake, including a potential release date.
“Last I heard, they’re talking about shooting it in Australia at the end of this year and releasing on Halloween 2025,” he reveals. “But I’ve heard versions of that story for so long, I don’t put a lot of credibility into it. There’s just so many things that can go sideways.”
He broke down the trials and tribulations the series has faced thus far:
“Some time ago, the rights expired on the original script, so then there became doubt about who owns what after 35 years. That was being worked out by lawyers, and we were trying to figure out what we were going to do. We were trying to do a TV series, which we...

As another Friday the 13th came and went, Mike Flanagan shared some bittersweet camp memories.

Fuller, who also created Pushing Daisies an Hannibal, previously announced his departure in May after Peacock gave Crystal Lake a straight-to-series order in 2022 with Fuller as writer, executive producer and showrunner.
“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” he wrote at the time. “We hope the final product will be something...

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service… but things have turned out to be more complicated than expected. First, the lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show, then Fuller got the boot and was replaced. It remains to be seen when Crystal Lake will be going into production, but since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!
First Showrunner
As mentioned, Bryan Fuller was steering this ship when it was first announced, and it nearly started filming with him (and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray) at the helm. Production was set to begin on July 22nd, with filming to last for seven to eight months.

When one is looking for a perfect show, one need not look further than NBC’s Hannibal. Although some assumed that the series would get overshadowed by the success and reputation of The Silence of the Lambs, it managed to prove its worth in the most unique ways possible.
There is no denying that the show is not for everyone, with its graphic and violent displays of crimes, and the romanticizing of murder and cannibalism. However, showrunner, Bryan Fuller, managed to deliver the story in a way that is unmatched. Be it the nature of Will Graham and Lecter’s relationship, or the complex psyche of every single character in the show, there is no denying that it is a masterpiece in every definition of the word.

Hannibal certainly has a lot going on when it comes to its story. From Will’s declining mental and physical health to the serial killers that come and go, Lecter’s killings, Jack’s personal problems, and the secondary story of the Verger family. However, despite all the storylines, there is one unconfirmed element that ends up overshadowing when it comes to the fandom.

Over the years, one section of fans has been trying to convince the others that there is something romantic going on between Will and Hannibal. While many believe that they are just two friends who share a complicated bond, there is no denying that there are several points in the story that hint at them sharing something more.
Due to this ‘Will they, won’t they’, many may accuse the series of queerbaiting at the expense of their characters. However,...

John Carpenter's 1983 horror film "Christine," based on the then-new novel by Stephen King, was about a 1958 Plymouth Fury that seemed to have a consciousness of its own. The Fury was not a benevolent being, however. Indeed, it seemed to hate people and took lives whenever possible, including when it was first rolling off the Plymouth assembly line. After remaining in disrepair for decades, Christine was rescued by a modern teen named Arnie (Keith Gordon), a hopeless nerd with no social skills. When Arnie fixes Christine, the car kind of falls in love with him, and begins imbuing him with eerie strength. He begins dressing like a 1950s greaser, while Christine begins driving herself around, running down Arnie's rivals and potential girlfriends. In a dark way, "Christine" is about how the often-romanticized 1950s weren't finished with America.
Carpenter brought a great deal of skill and craftsmanship to "Christine," and the film is scary and effective.

It's honestly almost impossible to imagine anyone besides Mads Mikkelsen portraying Dr. Hannibal Lecter on the cult NBC series "Hannibal," as the Danish actor fully embodies the show's version of the character. He is Hannibal Lecter, at least onscreen: a Machiavellian manipulator with an obscene wealth of knowledge, an impeccable sense of style, and a tendency toward eating people. His chemistry with his co-stars is undeniable, especially with Hugh Dancy, who plays empath and criminal profiler Will Graham. But back when NBC and series creator Bryan Fuller were first developing the show, they floated some very different actors before finally deciding on the magnificent Mikkelsen.
Fuller has revealed in interviews that he had to fight a bit to get Mikkelsen cast, because the network wanted someone "more mainstream" than the man mostly known to American audiences as the bloody-teared villain Le Chiffre from "Casino Royale." Thankfully he got his way...

Andy Muschietti's mega-blockbuster adaptation of "It" kicked off a new boom of Stephen King adaptations when it hit theaters in 2017, but if we were in a boom, is it safe to say we've now hit a bust? There are still tons of new King adaptations coming (I'm excited to see Osgood Perkins' take on "The Monkey" and Bryan Fuller's horned-up "Christine" update), but the massive hits have slowed down (remember "Firestarter?"), and one major adaptation, Warner Bros' "'Salem's Lot," is only now coming out after years of sitting on the shelf.
The works of Stephen King will always continue to be rich and entertaining, whether they're dominating the pop cultural zeitgeist or not. But if one title exemplifies the fickleness of the recent King adaptation boom, it's "Castle Rock," a wonderfully complicated, delightfully mysterious King-adjacent series that unceremoniously died on the vine at Hulu despite delivering two great seasons of television.

The television series “Crystal Lake” has found its new showrunner. Brad Caleb Kane will take over leading the prequel to the popular “Friday the 13th” movie franchise. This comes after Bryan Fuller stepped away from the project earlier this year due to creative differences.
Kane brings diverse experience to the role. He has co-run other television shows like “It: Welcome to Derry” for HBO. Kane has also written and produced critically acclaimed series. But some fans may recognize his voice talents the most. He provided the singing voice of Aladdin in the animated film from 1992.
The series will explore the origins of Camp Crystal Lake and the killer Jason Voorhees. It aims to tell the backstory introduced in the first 1980 film. That movie started the franchise with twelve total movies. It established Jason as one of horror’s most well-known villains.
Kane has had a long fascination with the slasher genre and this franchise specifically.

For many years, A24 has been attempting to adapt the long-running slasher film series "Friday the 13th" into a prequel TV series called "Crystal Lake." For a few promising moments, Bryan Fuller was set to be the showrunner, but like so many Fuller projects, he eventually parted ways with the project over creative differences. This was in addition to the continued legal woes surrounding the "Friday the 13th" movies, leaving director/producer Sean Cunningham butting heads with original "Friday the 13th" screenwriter Victor Miller as to who owns the rights to the 1980 hit.
Charlize Theron was once eyed to star in "Crystal Lake" as Jason Voorhees' mom, Pamela Voorhees, but that may no longer be the case now that the series has undergone some reworking in the wake of Fuller's departure. That reworking may finally be in full swing once again, as, according to a new report from Variety, Brad Caleb Kane...

It seems nothing can stop Jason Voorhees from killing again: Peacock’s Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake is back on track thanks to the addition of new showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (It: Welcome to Derry), TVLine has confirmed.
“From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask,” Kane said in a statement. “Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick,...

Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin this July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. Plans for A24 and Peacock’s planned Friday the 13th television series “Crystal Lake” derailed earlier this year, with showrunner Bryan Fuller‘s (“Hannibal”) departure leaving the project in limbo. Deadline reports that the project is back on track, enlisting Brad Caleb Kane (It: Welcome to Derry) as the new showrunner.
Kane will serve as the series’ creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer.
To refresh your memory, Peacock had given the project a straight-to-series order in 2022, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise featuring both Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela. Additionally, Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry, Carrie) were set to direct episodes, with the budget ballooning to around $10 million per episode. With eight episodes in total planned for the first season, it would’ve cost A24 roughly $85 million to bring the series to life, with...

Peacock’s “Friday the 13th” prequel series has found a new showrunner in Brad Caleb Kane.
Kane, who serves as coshowrunner on “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry,” will serve as the new creator, showrunner and executive producer for “Crystal Lake.” He replaces former showrunner and original series creator Bryan Fuller, who previously created series like “Pushing Daisies,” “American Gods,” “Hannibal” and “Star Trek: Discovery.”
Produced by A24, the drama series is based on the horror franchise and is set in the immediate aftermath of the drowning of a young Jason Voorhees. It was originally set to be helmed by Fuller and coshowrunner Jim Danger Gray, though Fuller was fired from the project in May. The “Friday the 13th” prequel series “Crystal Lake” has brought on Brad Caleb Kane as the new creator, showrunner, and executive producer.
The show hails from A24 and was ordered to series at Peacock in 2022. Kane’s hiring comes roughly three months after the original series creator, Bryan Fuller, was fired from the project.
No plot details are available for the series, but in the original 1980 film, Jason Voorhees is a child who drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. His death leads his mother Pamela to seek revenge against the counselors she blamed for her son’s death. Jason then became the antagonist beginning with the second film in the franchise.

Don't call them The Addams Family: "The Munsters" may be remembered as one of two darkly funny monster family sitcoms airing in the 1960s, but it's decidedly not the same as its comic strip-based contemporary. "The Munsters," for one thing, pulled its monsters straight from the Universal back catalog, featuring characters based directly on Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man. The series starred Fred Gwynne and Yvonne de Carlo as married couple Herman and Lily Munster, whose household consisted of an endearing vampire grandpa (Al Lewis), wolf-boy son (Butch Patrick), human niece (Beverley Owen and Pat Priest), and a whole host of spooky-fun pets including a bat, a cat, a raven, and a dragon-like reptile named Spot.
Despite its enduring spot in the zeitgeist, "The Munsters" actually only ran for two seasons from 1964 to 1966. It was capped off with a movie, "Munsters, Go Home!" that saw the family take a trip to Europe,...

While there have certainly been some interesting contenders, there has just never been a TV show quite like NBC's "Hannibal." The series began as something of a procedural, following a special FBI team working with criminal profiling instructor Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), whose empathy allows him to truly get into the minds of the killers he hunts. When he teams up with the talented psychologist Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), however, things get really interesting. Over its three seasons, the show transforms from a procedural with a "murder of the week" format to something much more unconventional. Showrunner Bryan Fuller helped shape the series into a sumptuous, indulgent creation that followed a tragic romance between its two leads, spawning entire bookshelves' worth of fanfiction. It's a brilliant adaptation of author Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter novels, giving Lecter new depth and a surprising sensuality that was missing from other iterations.

When it comes to sheer volume of movie adaptations under their belt, it's tough to find a working author with more cinematic dominance than Stephen King. The horror master continues to pump out new books on a yearly basis, and Hollywood keeps pace with movie after movie based on his best, most popular, and -– after years of mining from the cream of the crop –- even just-okay-est works. As of publication time, there are currently about a dozen King adaptations reportedly in the works, including Lynne Ramsay's spin on "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon," Bryan Fuller's "Christine" remake, Osgood Perkins' "The Monkey," and the long-awaited "Salem's Lot" revamp from Gary Dauberman and Warner Bros.
At some point in the future, it seems likely that every King work ever written will get the big or small screen treatment. However, there's one book that's been absent from fan...

Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.
But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

Acting icon Sigourney Weaver will be honored with the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
Inarguably one of the most acclaimed and versatile actors of her generation, Weaver, a triple-Oscar nominee, has moved easily across budgets and genres, from big-budget action franchises (Aliens, Avatar), comedy (Ghostbusters, Galaxy Quest), biopics (Gorillas in the Mist) and arthouse drama (Rampart, Master Gardner).
“An actress of the caliber of Sigourney Weaver has few rivals,” said Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera, who credited her with having “blazed the trail for powerful female actors” with 1980s action movies like Aliens while successfully “side-stepping labels that sought to restrict her” He said the lifetime achievement honor was “just recognition for a star who has built bridges between the most sophisticated art-house cinema and movies that engage with the public in a frank and original way, all the while remaining true to herself.

"Friday the 13th" fans have been waiting a long, long time for something new to happen with the beloved horror franchise. It has been all quiet on the Jason Voorhees front ever since 2009's "Friday the 13th" remake became a box office hit in its day. That was all supposed to change when it was announced that Peacock and A24 had teamed up for a TV show set in the universe titled "Crystal Lake," hailing from "Hannibal" creator Bryan Fuller. Instead, after roughly two years of development, Fuller was fired and the show now hangs in limbo. It turns out, major A-list talent was being courted for Fuller's seemingly very expensive version of the show. Namely, Oscar-winner Charlize Theron. Yes, really.
According to a new deep-dive report by The Wrap covering what went wrong on "Crystal Lake," Theron was being eyed to star as Jason's mom, Pamela Voorhees, in the show.

Even before the third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard" finished airing on Paramount+ in 2023, showrunner Terry Matalas was speaking openly about wanting to make a spinoff called "Star Trek: Legacy." The third season of "Picard" was far better than the previous two seasons, and Trekkies began to excitedly speculate about its continuation, constructing entire pitch packets in their minds.
The final episode of "Picard" saw the U.S.S. Titan-a rechristened as the Enterprise-G, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) serving as its captain. Pet Sematary: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beer has a whole lot of projects in the works at Paramount, from a new version of Sleepy Hollow to a film inspired by the American Girl toy brand – but that isn’t stopping her from teaming up with Universal Content Productions and genre regular James Wan (as well as his wife Ingrid Bisu) to develop a TV series called 1313, which is described as being a darker reimagining of the 1964 classic sitcom The Munsters. If 1313 gets a series order, Anderson Beer will be serving as the showrunner.
According to Deadline, 1313 will be “a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse,” which makes sense, since the Munsters family included vampires, a little werewolf, and a version of Frankenstein’s Monster. As for the title of this new project, it comes from the fact that the Munsters lived in a house with the address 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

We're returning to 1313 Mockingbird Lane yet again for a new television version of The Munsters, this time planned as a "darker reimagining" of the series.
Horror icon James Wan is producing a new series for Universal Studio Group (Usg) alongside showrunner Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) and Ingrid Bisu. Wan's company, Atomic Monster, will produce this latest iteration alongside Lab Brew. The original 1964 sitcom initially aired on CBS for 70 episodes from 1964 to 1966.
According to Variety, the logline for this new version of The Munsters describes it as a horror show that "lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse." Between this, the recent success of Abigail (which was based on Dracula's Daughter), and the upcoming Wolf Man from Leigh Whannell, it seems like Universal is intent on making their "Dark Universe" work, even if it doesn't end up being interconnected like the MCU.
