Martha Gehman grew up in New York City. She started performing at an early age, with New York City Ballet. She danced in The Nutcracker, A Midsummer Night's Dream (including the 1967 movie, also choreographed by George Balanchine), and Don Quixote. She began acting in her late teens and started to work in the theater. She sang with a punk band, performing at CBGB's and the Mud Club. She created two one-woman shows, performing at fringe-festivals and regional theaters.
