I know I speak for many when I say there was a hole in my heart when Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn left ‘Project: Runway’, but there have been attempts to revive the format. Reboot seasons of the show that don’t include the original hosts, and ‘Making the Cut’, Heidi and Tim’s updated spin on the format for Amazon Prime, both made valiant efforts to recapture that audience, but ‘Dress My Tour’ pulls out all the stops. Breaks from the usual pattern of reality show editing, thoughtful choices in guest artists, and full-on musical performances on the runway make ‘Dress My Tour’ stand out from the pack, without sacrificing the design and gossip audiences crave in a fashion competition show. In Hulu’s new reality competition hosted by Kate Upton, 11 fashion designers square off to create larger-than-life looks for icons of the music industry. From Paula Abdul to Jojo Siwa,...

Mass Appeal, the multimedia company co-founded by hip-hop icon Nas, was hit on Tuesday with a discrimination lawsuit in which a white executive claims she was the victim of “venomous and racist comments about ‘White folk’ and ‘crackers,’” and was subsequently fired.
Filed in a federal court in Manhattan, the lawsuit specifies the races of the parties due to the nature of the allegations. Melissa Cooper, a veteran documentary producer who was head of development at Mass Appeal and is white, alleges that company executives — including Peter Bittenbender, the company’s chief executive who is also white, and Jenya Meggs, its senior vp for partnerships & content acquisition, who is Black — “discriminated against her by removing her from several high value projects, creating a hostile work environment, and terminating her employment.”
Nas is not specifically named as a defendant in the lawsuit, but he is a partner in Mass Appeal, which is named.

So You Think You Can Dance premiered on Fox in July 2005. The reality TV dance competition was the brainchild of Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, producers of American Idol. Throughout its 17 seasons, fans of Sytycd have watched hundreds of contestants cut a rug and leave it all out on the dance floor in hopes of being crowned “America’s favorite dancer” at the end of the competition.
The talent of each Sytycd contestant is analyzed by a panel of two to four permanent judges. Guest judges also join the panel throughout the season, with the panel sometimes ballooning up to twice or more than its normal size for callback episodes or season finales. Let’s look at all of the permanent judges on So You Think You Can Dance over the years.

Matthew Morrison will no longer be a “So You Think You Can Dance” judge after he failed to follow “competition production protocols,” Variety has confirmed.
The former “Glee” star announced his departure from the Fox dance competition show, which premiered on May 18, in a statement on Friday.
“Having the opportunity to be a judge on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ was an incredible honor for me. Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show. After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly,” Morrison said in the statement. “I cannot apologize enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet.”

For every Dancing With the Stars or So You Think You Can Dance — two TV shows that have been on since the 2000s — there’s a dance competition that couldn’t quickstep its way past one season. But now CBS is hoping its latest addition to the dance-competition genre will fall into the former category. The network’s new show Come Dance With Me — executive-produced by NCIS: Los Angeles costars LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell — features talented kids joining untrained family members to compete for a 100,000 prize. Come Dance With Me sounds promising enough, but then again, so did the shows below, which were canceled after Season 1 — or, in one case, after just a few episodes. Born to Dance: Laurieann Gibson Emmy-nominated choreographer Laurieann Gibson presided over this BET dance competition, which aired one season in the summer of 2011. Twenty young dancers vied for the 50,000 prize, with Gibson offering...

Host Cat Deeley is the only previously announced “So You Think You Can Dance” star set to return for Season 17, as Fox revealed a new cast of judges on Monday: Stephen “Twitch” Boss, “Glee” star Matthew Morrison and dancer/singer JoJo Siwa. The show’s new installment will premiere Wednesday, May 18 at 9 p.m. Et, following the season finale of “The Masked Singer.”
Boss, Morrison and Siwa replace judging panelists Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson, who were originally slated to return for the show’s 17th season in 2020. But then came the Covid-19 pandemic — and the show’s producers had to scrap that season over health concerns. Production was officially halted, and in June 2020, Fox confirmed that the show would be put on hold.

Three years after its last season aired, Fox has officially announced “So You Think You Can Dance” will return for Season 17 this summer. The reality TV dance competition was put on pause during the Covid-19 pandemic and many fans were left wondering if the show would ever return. There has been no official announcement if host Cat Deely or judges Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson will come back, but one thing is certain: Co-creator and original judge Nigel Lythgoe is out.

So You Think You Can Dance is staging a comeback ... but one of its most familiar faces will not be back.

Fox has yet to comment on the decision, but it will undoubtedly divide the fans who have watched the show for so long.

So You Think You Can Dance co-creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe won’t be part of Season 17. He reportedly was not asked to be part of the judge’s panel for the new season. Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Laurieann Gibson were set to return as judges when Sytycd Season 17 was announced back in February 2020. After a two-year hiatus, the show’s comeback was confirmed on March 2. But Lythgoe revealed the news of his departure on Twitter on March 4. “I am so thrilled that America’s young aspiring dance talent will get to work with some of our greatest creative choreographers,” he wrote. “On a personally sad note, I have not been asked to be on the judging panel this season. “So You Think You Can Dance,” the multi-Emmy-winning dance competition, is finally returning this summer for its long-delayed 17th season, with auditions set for New York City, Los Angeles and New Orleans, Fox announced on Wednesday.
The 16th season premiered on June 3, 2019, and crowned its winner on September 16, 2019. This year, the competition is open to “highly skilled dancers between the ages of 18 and 30,” and those who make it to the live show will face “brand-new twists and turns” in the competition.

This past spring Beyonce became the most awarded woman in the history of the Grammys, adding four more trophies to her collection which brought her to a grand total of 28. But she has quietly been amassing a pretty strong Emmy track record too. This year she could win multiple times for her Disney+ music film “Black is King.”
Beyonce voiced Nala in the photo-realistic 2019 remake of “The Lion King”; “Black is King” was inspired by that film and features songs from Beyonce’s “Lion King” companion album, “The Gift.” It was already nominated for Best Music Film at the Grammys earlier this year, and it was awarded by the Art Directors Guild. Judging from Beyonce’s track record, it has a good chance at Emmy nominations too.

That's a wrap on season one of Celebrity Game Face! While we'll definitely miss seeing Kevin Hart on our screens every Tuesday, the E! show host and executive producer made sure that tonight's all-new episode—which included contestants Cheryl Hines and Kyra Kennedy, Adrienne Bailon and Israel Houghton and Thomas and Jenny Lennon—ended the season on a high note. How? By leading not one, but two hilarious games that involved food, recruiting famed choreographer Laurieann Gibson to once again judge the hilarious "Tik Talk Dance Off" challenge (which may or may not have threatened one couple's marriage!) and, as always, throwing in one final twist that...

“So You Think You Can Dance” Season 17 is not going to air this summer on Fox as planned.
A rep for the broadcast network tells Variety that production on the dance competition series cannot move forward as planned due to health and safety restrictions caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As a result, the show will miss its premiere date for the first time since it launched back in 2005.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the network is not ruling out the show returning once production can resume safely. However, it would likely not be until summer 2021 as Fox’s fall and midseason schedules are currently set.
“Sytycd” is by no means the first show to be impacted by the pandemic and will likely not be the last. Virtually all television production shutdown back in March, with several shows missing their planned premiere dates as a result.

When Fox officially renewed its dance competition series “So You Think You Can Dance” for a 17th season in February, little did they know reality shows that rely on live taping such as “American Idol” and “The Voice” would no longer be a reality, given the need for social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Updated with cause of death: Silvio Horta, who created the ABC comedy Ugly Betty and shared its 2007 Emmy nom for Outstanding Comedy Series, was found dead Tuesday at a hotel in his native Miami, and today the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner ruled that Horta died by suicide. He was 45.
Horta created the U.S. version of Ugly Betty, which starred America Ferrera and aired more than 80 episodes over four seasons from 2006-10. Ferrera won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing Betty Suarez, a smart, sweet-natured and wholesome Mexican-American from Queens who lands a job at a trendy fashion magazine in Manhattan. Betty embraced her unique appearance — including bangs, heavy-rimmed glasses and train-track braces — and independent attitude in the cutthroat world of New York fashion.
Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton, Michael Urie, Mark Indelicato and Vanessa Williams also were series regulars for the show’s entire run.

Sure, we had a laugh during the Season 16 finale when host Cat Deeley called out new “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Laurieann Gibson for her “cray-cray” way of describing her reactions to the contestants while adding that her Yoda-like observations were nutty but “in the cutest way possible.”
A sample revelation: “Not only am I watching the dancers from the moment they step on stage, I’m smelling them. I know what it smells like to have passion.” A substantial 16% of “Sytycd” devotees who answered our poll got a giggle out of Laurieann’s way of expressing herself.
Meanwhile, Cat mocked oh-so-sensitive fellow newbie judge and b-boy Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval for being driven to tears by nearly every routine he liked. But just 8% got a kick from his weepy montage. That seems to cancel out any possible Kleenex endorsement for the show’s alum. The moment was slightly...

Another season of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” reality show has come to a close. But Gold Derby’s Daniel Montgomery, Susan Wloszczyna and Denton Davidson have some lingering thoughts about the outcome of the Season 16 finale that aired on Monday.
Let’s start with the winner, 19-year-old b-boy Bailey Munoz, the first-ever break-dancer to win the title of America’s favorite dancer. As judge Mary Murphy told Gold Derby, he was the Rudy of this year’s competition as he rose to every occasion and relished the challenge of doing every style of dance from cha cha and jazz to Bollywood and Broadway.

Season 16 of Fox’s”So You Think You Can Dance” has come to a close with 19-year-old b-boy Bailey “Bailrok” Munoz taking the title of America’s favorite dancer. The key to success for the first-ever break-dancer to win the top spot was his versatility when it came to different types of choreography. The 5-foot-tall ball of energy was rarely daunted by routines outside of his comfort zone — save for maybe the cha cha. But this gifted entertainer always gave it his all.
In fact, Bailey was featured in nine routines of various permutations, including five duos – three with partner Mariah Russell, one with All-Star Koine Iwasaki and another with Gino Cosculluella. He was also took part in a male trio with Gino and ballroom dancer Ezra Sosa. And he participated in three group numbers with the rest of the Top 10 contestants. As expected, Bailey Munoz, 19, who hails from Las Vegas, won Season 16 of “So You Think You Can Dance.” While six other guys whose speciality was some form of street moves and hip hop have won Fox’s reality talent show in the past, Munoz — who is Filipino-American — is the first break-dancing specialist to do so.
While we got to witness once again on the live finale how b-boy Bailey was versatile in almost every type of choreography, from Bollywood to Broadway and beyond, the last show also featured some memorable non-fancy-footwork moments as well with several aimed at the judges.
Moment No. 1: As host Cat Deeley declared early in the opening of the show, she was going to have fun with the new judges, starting with choreographer to the stars Laurieann Gibson. Said Cat, “We all know she is a fountain of inspirational words and wisdom. But let’s be honest.

The dancers danced, and voters voted for the “So You Think You Can Dance” season 16 finale, so there was nothing to do but find out who won: Gino Cosculluela, Bailey Munoz, Sophie Pittman or Mariah Russell? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
Munoz was the only b-boy left in the competition against a trio of contemporary specialists, but you wouldn’t know it from how well he picks up choreography in a variety of styles. In last week’s “Top 4 Perform,” the final competitive performance episode of the season, Munoz danced Broadway, Bollywood, hip-hop, and smooth jazz with all of his competitors and with all-star Comfort Fedoke. And Bollywood was the only dance for which he received any criticism from the judges — and even that was pretty mild.

“There was definitely some heated discussion to put Bailey into this top five guys,” says “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Mary Murphy to Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna about contestant Bailey Munoz. The five-foot-tall b-boy breakout on season 16 of Fox’s reality competition show is one of four hopefuls competing for the title of America’s favorite dancer on the show’s finale that airs at 8 p.m. Et/Pt Sept. 16.
“His size was a consideration,” explains the ballroom specialist who has been part of the show since it began in 2005. In addition, “it’s always scary when we put a b-boy in and will he be able to cope with all the material he is given because they are not trained dancers. They’re not even used to doing choreography.”

Pro dancers Artem Chigvintsev and Sharna Burgess weren’t welcome on “Dancing with the Stars” this season, but “So You Think You Can Dance” invited them over to choreograph a routine for “Top 4 Perform” night. However, did they end up dooming their dancers with a challenging quickstep, or did Gino Cosculluela and Mariah Russell end up rising to the challenge? Scroll down to watch their performance below.
We don’t see a lot of quicksteps on “Sytycd” these days. The style is so difficult to master that contestants who attempted it were seldom able to put their best foot forward — literally and figuratively. So it was a vote of confidence in Cosculluela and Russell that the show tasked them with this difficult dance on the night when each of them also had to perform four other times. But it was still a risk. After all, Cosculluela and Russell are both contemporary specialists,...

The judges on “So You Think You Can Dance” have been praising contemporary dancer Gino Cosculluela‘s technique from the beginning of the season, when Nigel Lythgoe predicted from his very first audition that he would make it to the top 10. But sometimes it’s the dancers with the most perfect movements who have the hardest time opening up. That was the question for Cosculluela during “Top 4 Perform” night, the last competitive performance night before America votes for the winner. So how did he do? Scroll to watch two of his most moving performances.
Cosculluela got off to a rough start in the first live show of the season a few weeks ago, with the judges criticizing his lack of personality when dancing hip-hop. He eventually found that leading-man showmanship in subsequent weeks, but we hadn’t seen his emotional side quite as much. Choreographer Jaci Royal and all-star Melanie...

During “Top 4 Perform” night on “So You Think You Can Dance,” we got to see every possible permutation of finalist duets: everyone got to perform with everyone else. That meant we had the chance to see a closing number between contemporary ladies Mariah Russell and Sophie Pittman. It was a hip-hop routine choreographed by Luther Brown, and we had already gotten to see Russell get down to Brown, but would Pittman be able to pull it off? Scroll down to watch the performance and find out.
Pittman described their characters as “catty girls who like each other but really want to beat each other,” though she described Russell as her best friend and admitted that it was difficult competing against her, both in character and in the actual competition where only one person can be named America’s favorite dancer. But you wouldn’t have known it from how well...

It all comes down to this. “So You Think You Can Dance” has narrowed the competition to its final four dancers: Gino Cosculluela, Bailey Munoz, Sophie Pittman and Mariah Russell. On “Top 4 Perform” night that quartet danced for the last time before viewers cast their votes for America’s favorite dancer. So who made the best last impression? And who do you think deserves to win? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
Going into Monday night’s show Munoz was our odds-on-favorite to win, overtaking his partner Russell, whom our readers thought was the front-runner for most of the live shows. The judges have repeatedly dubbed them the couple to beat — though of course, even if they are the best duo of the competition, there can ultimately be only one winner.
