The world premiere of Shaman, the new horror-thriller from director Antonio Negret, is set for October 25 at the 2024 Austin Film Festival. Starring Sara Canning, Daniel Gillies, Jett Klyne, and Humberto Morales, this chilling film explores the collision between faith, culture, and an ancient evil that tests the limits of human belief. The film, which runs for 94 minutes and is set in the remote Ecuadorian Andes, offers a deeply personal and atmospheric take on horror, with the added weight of its director’s own experiences growing up in Latin America.
At its core, Shaman tells the story of Candice, a devout Catholic missionary living with her husband Joel and teenage son Elliot, as they work to convert an Indigenous community in the shadow of the Chimborazo volcano. Their efforts are met with resistance, particularly from the local Shaman, whose deep-rooted spiritual beliefs clash with the family’s religious mission. However, when Elliot falls gravely ill,...

People have harbored a deep fascination for werewolves, vampires, witches, and ghosts for ages. While ample series and movies have been made on the supernatural theme, The Originals has managed to satisfy fans’ craving in a way like no other.
A spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, the CW show features the origin and present of the first vampires ever created: the Mikaelson family—Mikael, Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and their half-brother and hybrid, Niklaus. While the show features all of the Mikaelson family at different times, it primarily deals with Elijah, Niklaus, and Rebekah.

In the realm of the supernatural genre, The Vampire Diaries occupies a very special separate space for being an incredibly intriguing and fascinating series about blood-sucking fictional beings known as Vampires. Having won several awards and fashioned off several spin-offs, the series remain as beloved as ever despite its end in 2017.

What made the tale even more interesting was that the series took creative liberty to expand upon the concepts of ‘Originals’ aka the first-ever Vampires, in turn leading to an equally successful series, The Originals. The concept turned out to be instrumental to the success of The Vampire Diaries, yet Ian Somerhalder has a good reason to be bitter about the show.

It’s been 15 years since audiences were introduced to Mystic Falls and its vampires, love triangles and teenage drama. And still, The Vampire Diaries holds a special place for many viewers.
Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW on Sept. 10, 2009, and ran for eight seasons,. Now, to celebrate the milestone anniversary, showrunner Julie Plec looks back on the series she created with Kevin Williamson and how it launched a supernatural franchise.
She recalls wanting to “tell a really emotional story that was sexy and romantic and scary and all the things,” while also creating “something that felt timeless, that could live on and continue to feel like anybody, any generation at any time can connect to it.”
Julie Plec
And to accomplish that, Plec and Williamson knew they had to build a solid team that could produce stories with “creative integrity and that we’re deeply emotional and highly entertaining.”

Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.
Films like The Hitcher, Near Dark, and Splinter highlight how car troubles, creepy rest stops, and seedy motels don’t compare to humanity’s worst- human or otherwise- prowling the highways.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to road trip horror movies. These five titles exploit our travel anxieties by pitting their protagonists against vampires, cannibals, psychopaths, and the devil himself over vast stretches of highway.

When Orphan Black co-creator John Fawcett read Kat and Niko Troubetzkoy’s new The CW show Sight Unseen, his response gave the half-sisters, who were producers on his own Peabody-winning BBC America series, a jolt of confidence. “We showed him the pilot [script] and he said, ‘This is one of the best detective thrillers I’ve read in a while,” Kat recalls.
The show follows Vancouver homicide detective Tess Avery (Dolly Lewis), who, after experiencing sudden sight loss and becoming clinically blind, resigns from her position. Soon after, she meets Sunny (Agam Darshi), an agoraphobic volunteer on a visual assistance app who remotely provides Tess with visual description via a lapel camera, and the two begin to take up cases on their own.

It doesn’t take a visual assistant to see the chemistry between The CW’s newest romantic leads.
Sight Unseen follows Tess Avery (Dolly Lewis), a Vancouver-based homicide detective who steps away from the job when her vision loss nearly costs her partner (The Originals’ Daniel Gillies) his life. Tess continues to help the police department solve crimes with an assist from Sunny (Agam Darshi), an agoraphobic woman in New York City who serves as Tess’ eyes — while also providing some A+ commentary on Tess’ life.

This is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Thursday, October 12, 2023.
Daniel Gillies is returning to The CW.
The Vampire Diaries and The Originals alum will star in Sight Unseen, a co-production between the network and CTV.
The series focuses on a "top homicide detective (Dolly Lewis) who is forced to quit the job she loves after nearly killing her partner and being diagnosed as clinically blind," according to the official logline.
"Reluctant to accept help, Tess uses an assistance app and connects with Sunny Patel (Agam Darshi), a professional seeing-eye guide and an agoraphobe living 3,000 miles away.
After losing her vision, Tess is haunted by the unsolved cases she left behind.
Using a hidden camera and earpiece, Sunny remotely steers Tess through life's obstacles — and crimes — as the two challenge preconceptions about ability, trust and where to draw the line.

The CW has ordered two scripted series set to premiere in the fall of 2024: crime-solving dramas “Wild Cards” and “Sight Unseen.”
“Wild Cards” is a procedural starring two alumni of the CW: Vanessa Morgan (“Riverdale”) and Giacomo Gianniotti (“Reign”). Ellis (Giannioti) is a gruff, sardonic cop demoted from his role as a detective fown to the maritime unit, while Max (Morgan) is a spirited, clever con woman living a transient life and scamming everyone she meets. When Max gets arrested and ends up helping Ellis solve a local crime, the two are offered the opportunity to redeem themselves, with Ellis going back to detective and Max staying out of jail if they can learn to trust each other and work together.
Michael Konyves created “Wild Cards” and executive produces alongside pilot director James Genn, Shawn Piller, Lloyd Segan, and writers Alexandra Zarowny, James Thorpe, Noelle Carbone and Morwyn Brebner,...

From 2009 to 2017 on The CW, The Vampire Diaries was a fan favorite. The supernatural teen drama’s main characters — Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev), Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), and Damon Salvatore (and Ian Somerhalder) — kept viewers thrilled till the very end of the eight-season hit. But the heroes (and villains-turned-heroes) would be nothing without baddies to battle in Mystic Falls. Years after the series finale, Tvd diehards still have strong opinions about which fiend is best. Below are the top five Vampire Diaries villains according to fan votes on Ranker and MsMojo.

Barry Pepper takes the lead in feature film “Bring Him to Me,” which is now shooting in Queensland, Australia, under director Luke Sparke (“Occupation Rainfall”). The picture is a mob thriller written by Tom Evans and which also stars Sam Neill and Rachel Griffiths.
Under orders from a ruthless crime boss, a getaway driver must battle his conscience and drive a young and unsuspecting passenger to an uncertain fate. Evans’ script was inspired by the traumatic scene in Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” in which Nicky Santoro (portrayed by Joe Pesci) unwittingly turns up for a meeting in a cornfield and things go South.
“I’ve been fascinated by morally gray stories like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Drive,’ so when presented with the chance to dive deep into the underworld, I couldn’t resist bringing my own flavor to the genre, toeing the lines of film noir and graphic novels,” said Sparke.

As Halloween approaches, people are looking to Netflix to provide the scares.
Luckily, the streaming giant has plenty to choose from when it comes to horror – although, as with anything, not all scary movies are created equal.
Trust in the guidance of your fellow horror lovers and find seven of the best-reviewed horror films on Netflix below… just in time for Halloween this weekend.
1. Creep 2 (100 per cent)
While the gruesome horror film was released in 2017, many viewers are just now discovering it thanks to its place on Netflix.
The sequel follows on from the 2004 cult favourite Creep, a found-footage psychological horror film (also on Netflix) directed by Patrick Brice, who co-wrote the story with Mark Duplass.
In the original, Duplass plays a stranger who hires a videographer (Brice) to film him for a day, explaining that the idea behind the video is to pass it down to his unborn son.

I own a frankly absurd amount of movies (roughly 5000), and I’m subscribed to several streaming services. In short, I have a lot of films that I haven’t got around to watching immediately to hand. For the past decade plus I’ve been too busy in October to indulge in the Shocktober horror marathons that a lot of my friends do, but as I’m not doing the London Film Festival as press this year, I thought I’d take the opportunity to delve into the back catalogue of horror I’ve had waiting to be watched.
From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.

The return of Virgin River for its fourth season on Netflix is just around the corner (July 20), but if you can’t wait that long, fortunately, we have some ideas about what to expect in the 12 episodes. The third season left off with quite a few lingering questions, including: Whose baby is Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) having — her boyfriend Jack (Martin Henderson) or late husband Mark’s (Daniel Gillies)? Who shot Jack? Was it Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth), or is he innocent as he claims, even though the gun was in his Jeep? Doc (Tim Matheson) has a grandson?! Thanks to executive producer Sue Tenney, Breckenridge, Henderson, and Hollingsworth, we have some teases. Below, we’ve gathered everything we know about what we can expect from the fourth season. When We’ll Find Out Whose Baby It Is Season 3 ended with Mel interrupting Jack’s proposal to inform him she’s ...

The official trailer for season 4 of “Virgin River,” the Netflix romantic drama based on the novels of Robyn Carr, has been released.
“Virgin River” stars Alexandra Breckenridge as Melinda Monroe, a nurse practitioner who accepts a job offer to move from Los Angeles to the titular North Carolina small town. The show follows Melinda as she adjusts to small town life and gets involved with romantic drama, particularly involving local restaurant owner Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
The Season 4 trailer picks off where Season 3 left off, with Melinda pregnant and unsure whether or not the baby is Jack’s or if the father is her late husband Mark (Daniel Gillies). The question causes strain in the two’s relationship, especially with Melinda eager to find out who the father is, while Jack tries to dissuade her from taking a paternity test.

Mel is looking for the silver lining as she gets ready to welcome a baby. In the season four trailer of Virgin River, released July 8, Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) is looking forward to her future as a mother—even though she doesn't know who the father of her child is. Of course, there are only two possible options: Mark (Daniel Gillies), her deceased husband, or Jack (Martin Henderson), the local bar owner, who Mel reconciled with in the season three finale. Jack knows there's a chance he may not be the father, but remains supportive and excited to potentially start a family with Mel—which is why he doesn't want to get a paternity test. "I can't do that right now," Jack tells...

From Black Sheep to Deathgasm to Housebound, New Zealand has a pretty good relationship with horror, even if it leans towards the comedy side sometimes (this is no bad thing of course!) but Coming Home In The Dark is anything but a comedy movie.
It doesn’t take long to realise this either as the opening scenes show two guys come across a family in the beautiful but scarcely populated New Zealand wilderness. These two guys aren’t very nice people and are soon taking the family on a terrifying road trip.
Coming Home In The Dark is brutally violent but you’ll never numb to this violence. It isn’t plastered across every minute of the movie, there’s meaning, thought and reasoning behind each and every hit.

Perhaps the most surprising thing of Coming Home in the Dark is seeing Daniel Gillies with a Kiwi accent and appearing to pull it off. Not as surprising is that he appears to be playing a bad guy with some nuance; something the actor has done very effectively for much of his career.
James Ashcroft's feature film debut, which he co-wrote with Eli Kent, stars Erik Thomson and Miriama McDowell as Hoagie and Jill respectively. The couple is on an idyllic outing at an isolated coastline with their sons when they are taken hostage by a pair of drifters, Mandrake and Tubs (played by Gillies and Matthias Luafutu).
While at first Hoagie and Jill assume the encounter was random, it soon becomes clear that Mandrake and Hoagie have history and the encounter was not accidental.

"Where are you taking us?" "Home..." Dark Sky Films has released another new official US trailer for the New Zealand "nihilistic morality thriller" film Coming Home in the Dark, which originally premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. A family’s idyllic outing descends into terror when a high school teacher and his family go out exploring an isolated coastline. An unexpected meeting with a pair of murderous drifters thrusts the family into a nightmare road trip where they find themselves captured by the enigmatic psychopath Mandrake and his hulking man-child accomplice Tubs. Coming Home in the Dark stars Daniel Gillies, Erik Thomson, Miriama McDowell, and Matthias Luafut. One review says the film is a "rivetingly nasty ride and an assured debut from a promising new director." This trailer starts out quite calm, but gets more intense as it goes on. Looks like it gets very dark and...
