One of four children of WWII Naval personnel Douglas Gilling and feminist campaigner Bridget Gilling.

[on her career when Return to Eden (1983) became in international hit] After something like nine months I'd not really had a job, although I had been overseas for five of those months. It affected my self-confidence, absolutely. I went to my agent and said it was crazy. If at any stage I was going to be successful it would be now, after all these years. I asked whether I'd chosen the wrong profession, but he said to hang in there.
