In many ways Aardman Animation and director/innovator Nick Park have done for Claymation and British stop-motion animation in the last few decades, what Ray Harryhausen did for the art as a whole in earlier eras of cinema advancement. In the history of this filmmaking technique these names are heroes and their work is timeless, cherished and true poetry in (stop)motion. From Wallace & Gromit and Creature Comforts to Chicken Run and Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, this studio’s body of work is revered and consistent. So naturally expectations are high with every new project, let alone the first feature in nearly 15 years to be directed by Nick Park. Thankfully, Early Man is another win to scratch onto the Aardman slate.

The studio’s latest stop-motion epic is a timely story about a stone age English tribe playing footie against sophisticated continentals
It might be set in the stone age but the latest claymation epic from Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman touches on two of the timeliest issues of the coming year. First, the 2018 World Cup: this is squarely a story about football, and therefore likely to find a global audience even if its sense of humour remains lovably, colloquially English. Second, this is a story concerned with Britain’s sense of history and identity. By accident or design, Aardman have made a Brexit movie!
That could be an overzealous interpretation, admittedly, in a climate in which everything seems to be about Brexit, but the evidence is difficult to ignore. Early Man focuses on an insular, small-minded tribe who live in a giant crater, cut off from the outside world (the...

Fans of incorrect lower limb attire, facial decortication and enormous Lycan-Lapine crossbreeds will be pleased this morning. Aardman’s Co-founder Peter Lord (and Master) has told a German VFX conference that he ‘absolutely assumes’ that Nick Park will bring back Wallace and Gromit to your screens soon.
According to THR Lord told the Fmx VFX and animation audience in Stuttgart, Germany recently,
“When Nick’s not drawing cavemen, he’s drawing Wallace & Gromit…I absolutely assume he will do another, but not a feature. I think he found it was too much. I think he liked the half-hour format.”
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit was a stretch for our old pals W&C, though the relentless invention and visual accuity was as mesmerising as ever. That we’ll see more Wallace and Gromit on the small screen is a reassuring sign that Aardman, no matter how far they travel,...

Stop-motion connoisseurs Aardman Animations are getting back into the game with Early Man, a prehistoric adventure starring Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston and Game of Thrones starlet Maisie Williams.
Slated for January of 2018, today brings forth the very first teaser trailer for Nick Park’s old-timey adventure flick, and fans of Aardman’s decorated body of work (see: Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run) ought to feel right at home. Up above, we’re introduced to plucky caveman Dug (Redmayne), a hero from the Stone Age with more courage than sense.
Placed at the forefront of his hapless tribe – here we see Dug’s allies scuppering a hunting trip, blissfully unaware that they’re creating too much noise – Redmayne’s protagonist spearheads a fight against the mighty Lord Nooth (Hiddleston), a ridiculously pompous governor/tyrant who hails from a neighboring Bronze Age town. Williams, meanwhile, is attached to the part of Goona,...

Wallace, Gromit, those chickens from Chicken Run, Shaun and a collection of Sheep and leading the pack – Dug and Hognob. Genre: Horror | Drama | Comedy
Air Date/Time: March 24 at 9/8c
Network: BBC America
Created by: Toby Whithouse
Director: Philip John
Writer: Tom Grieves
Summary:
In an old B&B in a sleepy seaside town, we join Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and her housemates Tom (Michael Socha) and Hal (Damien Molony). With a newborn baby to look after, it’s never been more difficult to live life under-the-radar as a ghost, a werewolf, and a vampire. There are also other vampires to deal with: lurking in every corner of society, waiting for the Old Ones, powerful older vampires, to arrive and take over the world with brutal force. Worse yet, there’s a malevolent ghost on the loose and someone’s seeking to expose the existence of werewolves – not to mention all the diapers that need changing.
This week’s new episode sees the return of a familiar character; we met vampire Adam (Craig Roberts) last season.

I don’t know about all of you, but the season 3 finale of the UK version of Being Human on BBC America last spring was a total shocker for me. I did try to avoid spoilers, and was rewarded, but everyone had kept pretty quiet about it, so it wasn’t that hard. My, how things have changed.
We told you in October about the casting of Damien Molony as Hal, stepping into the vacated vampiric shoes of the dearly departed Mitchell. We also told you back in November, because he gave an interview about it and subsequently tweeted about it, that Russell Tovey would be leaving the show, though we weren’t certain when.
