Gary Grimes gave up acting, even though he had offers for sitcoms, because he wanted to help refugees who legally emigrate to the United States. He worked for the International Organization for Migration, heading up the LAX office.

His mother, Lucilla (Solari), was from Giubiasco, Ticino, Switzerland, and came to the U.S. at a young age, settling in California; she was of Swiss-Italian descent. His father, Chester Oliver Grimes, from Noblesville, Indiana, had English, Scottish, and German ancestry.

Born on exactly the same date as comedy legend (and SNL alum) Dana Carvey.

Never been Married.

Nephew of Rudy Solari, who was his mother's brother.
