Warning: contains spoilers for ‘The Enchanted Sleeper’ & ‘The Break’
Season three of His Dark Materials is the twist of the kaleidoscope that drops the glittering elements of this mad tale into their final shape. Here’s when it stops setting up and solving mysteries and solidifies into a story about the fight between independence of mind and religious tyranny. You know, all that silly fantasy stuff.
There was zero room for silliness in this opening double-bill, which was a solemn two-hours filled with weighty pronouncements and grave discussions. Dafne Keen’s Lyra being unconscious for most of it, plus not much Mary, and no Lee Scoresby (for obvious reasons) made it a very serious affair lacking warmth or humour. Well, what’s warm or humorous about killing God?
That’s Lord Asriel’s plan. After proving the existence of Dust and the multiverse – both of which are hypocritically denied by...

What’s the old saying, ‘man plans and the Authority laughs’? Between the first announcement of BBC/HBO fantasy adaptation His Dark Materials in November 2015 and the arrival of its final season in December 2022, a great many plans were forced to change. 2020’s multiple Covid-19 lockdowns left the third season’s filming schedule up in the air, and when it came back down again not everything – or everyone – was in the same place.
Sophie Okonedo, Chipo Chung and Xaphania
In season two (filming of which mostly squeaked inside the line before the first UK lockdown in March 2020), fans were introduced to new character Xaphania, voiced by Sophie Okonedo. The leader of the rebel angels who joined forces with Lord Asriel to destroy the controlling, misogynistic Authority, Xaphania is a key character in season three’s war.

With her latest film, The Secret Garden, arriving in August, here’s a look at Walters’ greatest big-screen roles – from Educating Rita to Paddington
Lewis Gilbert directed Walters in her seminal movie debut, Educating Rita, and although this stagey and subdued film (Gilbert’s last) doesn’t have anything like the fizz of that, Walters gives it her considerable best. She is the eldest of three sisters uneasily reunited for their mother’s funeral (the other two are Joanne Whalley and Victoria Hamilton). Walters is Teresa, a housewife devoted to her mother’s memory and very domineering when it comes to her husband, played by Tom Wilkinson. A strong character performance.

Sky is looking to become Europe’s “most important producer of original content” as it doubles its investment over the next five years and hopes that NBCUniversal’s move to take over its international content sales will help it reach “another level”.
Sky and NBCU held a cocktail event at London’s BAFTA last night to toast the merger of Sky Vision into NBCUniversal International Television Distribution and introduce British producers to Belinda Menendez and her team.
Sky Studios CEO Gary Davey said that Jane Millichip, who founded Sky Vision and becomes Chief Commercial Officer at Sky Studios, and her team hit their long-term revenue target two years ahead of schedule.
“The Sky Vision journey has been very important to everyone here at Sky. The Sky Vision team were able to develop and prove a monetization model that allowed us to initiate our investment model in original content,” he said.

Peter Nichols, the British playwright whose play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg provided Albert Finney with his 1968 Broadway debut and did the same in 2003 for Eddie Izzard, died Sept. 7 in Oxford, England. He was 92.
His death was announced on Twitter by agent Alan Brodie Representation. A cause of death was not given.
In addition to Joe Egg, his most familiar play, Nichols’ credits include the 1972 film version starring Alan Bates and 1966’s Swinging London touchstone Georgy Girl starring Lynne Redgrave, Bates, Charlotte Rampling and James Mason.
Based on his own difficult experience as the father of a daughter born with severe disabilities, Nichols’ A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg – Joe was short for Josephine – used broad, music-hall style comedy to tell the story of a married couple struggling to care for their daughter with cerebral palsy. Deep State, the Epix action/spy series, returns for Season 2, this time with Walton Goggins as its star.
Deep State made its U.S. debut back in June 2018 on cable channel Epix, showcasing a slick small screen spy thriller headlined by the ever-capable (Shazam! villain) Mark Strong, who played Max Eaton, an ex-spy who becomes thrust into a covert intelligence war. The series, an internationally distributed product of Fox Networks Group, received a quick Season 2 renewal, but the status of its domestic deal was left uncertain for months until Epix's renewal announcement arrived that August.
Not only would fears over the show's status prove unwarranted, but the renewal would come with the reveal of a brand-new star in Walton Goggins. Moreover, it appears that Season 2 will see the show live up to its titular term, “deep state,” which has become a potent concept in the increasingly partisan political arena,...

The royal family in Netflix’s “The Crown” is growing. The roles of Prince Charles and the Queen Mother are set for the upcoming Season 3, which will see a time jump that required the recasting of all central roles.
Josh O’Connor and Marion Bailey will play the older versions of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth’s son, and Queen Elizabeth’s mother, respectively, the streaming service announced via Twitter Thursday. They replace Julian Baring and Victoria Hamilton in the roles.
The way Netflix has worked (and is expected to continue to work) this particular show is to swap out its actors every two seasons to allow for the progression of the story of Queen Elizabeth’s life.

When it comes to the SAG Awards, size often matters. The most massive casts often run off with the ensemble prizes, which explains how “Lost” found victory at the 2005 ceremony, and how “Downton Abbey” (2012) was able to take down two-time champ “Boardwalk Empire” (2010-2011). This year, however, Gold Derby’s SAG TV predictions favor Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” to prevail despite having the second-smallest cast. Are we crazy for going against bigger ensembles?
“The Handmaid’s Tale” boasts 10 cast members on the voting ballot, ahead of only Netflix’s “The Crown” at five. Comparatively, the other nominated dramas each feature more than a dozen actors: HBO’s “Game of Thrones” at 30, Netflix’s “Stranger Things” at 17 and NBC’s “This Is Us” at 13. In recent years “Game of Thrones” and “Downton Abbey” always had the biggest casts, with “Downton” beating the HBO fantasy series in 2014 and 2015.

Netflix’s sleek period drama The Crown has captivated audiences with its peek into the private life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy), but many fans may be wondering how much of the glamorous series is based on real life. While some elements — like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s frosty relationship with the royal family and Princess Margaret’s romance with the dashing Pete Townsend — are true, several key elements of the series are either totally made up or exaggerated for dramatic effect. (And let’s be honest, even the life of a royal sometimes needs TV magic to make it more watchable.

"And, if I may: never let them see the real Elizabeth Windsor," Winston Churchill warns his young queen in Netflix's new drama The Crown. "Never let them see that carrying the crown is often a burden. Let them look at you, but let them see only the eternal." For those who didn't grow up under the British monarchy (and even for some who did), Queen Elizabeth can be a hard person in whom to find sympathy. She is the cold, distant symbol of an obsolete but fabulously wealthy system and has held a hard line on its antiquated rules, which at various points in her lifetime stood in the way of her uncle, her sister, and her son from marrying the people they loved because the various institutions of church and state did not approve. Peter Morgan once wrote a wonderful film — The Queen, the middle piece in his trilogy...
